"Okay, Mr. Bacula; you're a brilliant quantum physicist who inexplicably behaves like an overcaffinated 7 year old boy, who demonstrates his affection for his crush by playing practical jokes on her and then laughing and running away like a colossal tool. Your catchphrase is 'yabba dabba do' and that's non-negotiable. We paid Hanna-Barbera for the rights and we're not wasting it. Action!"

This Movie Nights episode along with the one about I-Man are classics. What Allison and Phelan may have not known at the time they shot these was the reason both Infiltrator and I-Man felt so similar was because they were directed by the same man, Corey Allen. We thank him for offering us these two quintessential
    Bakula performances. :D

I think it was called "Sporting Chance".

What I have found quite interesting about Scott Bakula is that his acting career on TV launched in 1986 (he did theatre before) and virtually right from the beginning he almost always played the leading man (or one of the leads).
I-Man (1986), Gung Ho ('86-'87), Infiltrator ('87), Eisenhower and Lutz ('88), Quantum Leap ('89-'93); he always got or shared the top billing.
And when he was "just" a guest star on some other shows during this time, they always asked him to come back for more than just one episode.
Now tell me about starting at the top! :-)

    • @nomduclavier

Collin Gerberding Collin Gerberding omg that movie was hilarious
"Hm, how can I recreate this trick? Surely only through INVENTING A CLONING MACHINE. IT'S THE ONLY WAY!" And ALL HE USES IT FOR IS HIS DINKY LITTLE TRICK. It's just cloning technology is the frigging 1800s or whatever; that's probably all it's good for. Also his consciousness seemed to be shared between them? But also not, like sometimes he was the one dying and sometimes not? And he doesn't think, covering up all these bodies OF HIMSELF that "hm, maybe this is a little too far". Then finally the other one's all, "lol, twin" like WHY WOULD THAT NOT BE YOUR FIRST GUESS? NO. CLONING MACHINE. THAT IS THE ONLY OPTION. And again, dedicating your entire life -- or two lives, even better -- to ONE trick seems worthwhile; who cares if you spend decades lying to your WIFE and letting her think you're cheating on her; clearly that should be the priority. Did creating better tricks through ACTUAL MAGICIAN... SHIP... not occur to you? All three of you had to ruin your lives to create one? You're kind of the worst magicians ever.

"Mr Peabody, did Scott Bakula have any really bad TV pilots?"
"Set the time machine for 1987, Sherman; I believe we're going to find out"
At the end of the episode
"Wow, so he could have been in a terrible series if people like it more than Quantum Leap?"
"Indeed. The superior show thankfully won out, but between The Infiltrator and I-man, he had a rough period before he found a suitable TV show. However, I wouldn't give too much faith that these shows would have gone to series"
    "What do you mean?"
"Well, it would require a real LEAP of faith"
    "Oh Mr Peabody!"

I'm going to guess this was a Universal production, because it sounds a lot like the David McCallum series, The Invisible Man, or any number of pilots post-Six Million Dollar Man where someone accidentally gets a superpower and by the end of the pilot commits to running missions for a government agency or a corporation with government contracts. The last show I remember in that vein was Now and Again with Eric Close and Dennis Haysbert in the early 2000's.
If this was a CBS pilot, why is there an ABC logo at the bottom of the preview scenes.
