It's funny, I remember back in the Obscurus Lupa days, I reached out to her and asked if she would do this movie, only for her to tell me that it had yet to be released. Now, she's finally done it.........my life is complete!
Wow, he made this AFTER Julie & Jack!? That movie at least seemed semi-competent (relatively speaking). It's hilarious that this movie is only now seeing the light of day because of Rifftrax. Can't wait for the Riff!
My god! It's like a live-action Dingo movie! Just wanna say I love your glowing blue background motif in this series, and the retro 90s VHS picture on the wall. I also love your hair in this one. And your MST3K shirt.
James Nguyen has NO CLUE HOW TO APPROACH WOMEN. And lest you think "oh but that's the main character, not James Nguyen: all of his movies feature a self-insert author avatar, they all creepily stalk a blonde woman who inexplicably falls for him because the script tells her to, and they all have the same weird "good looking guy from English class" look to them.
James Nyugen has almost no concept of how humans are supposed to relate to one another, its super creepy how he imagines 'normal' adult relationships should be.
The worrying/hilarious thing is that 'Dr. G' gives, by an extraordinarily long way, the most accomplished acting performance in the entire James Nguyen oeuvre. He actually sounded like he understood most of the words he was saying rather than reading them phonetically off a cue card that was being held upside down. I think Whitney Moore in Birdemic 2 is the only other person ever to pull that off and she did so only by having naked contempt for the entire production.
What? Alison is sponsored ...and it is an actually relevant sponsor to her content? No seven minutes opening up a loot crate, talking about the virtues of good eats with nature box, or hocking dollar shave club? That is fantastic and one of the first times that I've seen a sponsor fit the host perfectly. Congrats.
Fun Fact: my dad is a radiation oncologist and, because our last name is unpronounceable, he is in fact referred to by colleagues/staff as "Dr. G". He's only _almost_ as unhinged as the one in the movie, though.
Why doesn't Dr. G get more lines in Nguyen's other movies? He's the best actor there. I'm not even kidding. Also, Rifftrax's response to the slow-speed car crash was hysterical.
According to IMDB Tippi Hendren, Kim Novak and _Christopher Reeve_ were in this? Did Nguyen just start splicing in scenes from other movies to pad out the runtime or something?
This is one of those movies where once your brain is able to sort through what you just forced it to intake, it completely reboots and you lose the last 3 years of your life.
Dr. G is GOLDMAN from House of the Dead 2 [ Game ] I refuse to believe the hammy acting and lines aren't a subtle nod from the master of movie making; Ngyuen
+Movie Nights Also I think the "romance" between Joe and the clone of his girlfriend kinda reminds me of the movie Vertigo. Since that was a Hitchcock film, of course James would replicate it in his own kooky way.
OMG! It's another amazing bulk!!! The horrible green screen sets!!! That second scene in the guys kitchen with no control over lighting and horrible camera movement ... GLORIOUS! You know, I keep ripping on Amazing Bulk for the bad green screen work but at least the keying was done competently ... no green fringe, no cutting into the subject ... Oh god ... I can't believe I favorably compared the Amazing Bulk to another movie. WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO! What kills me with these incompetently shot green screen attempts (this movie and Bulk for example) is that they light their screen (probably) and then light their subject like they would for an interview (more or less) and not in a way that would fit the scene or their virtual set. All of the green screen shots are light with flat lighting at character height when in some cases the light would be coming from left or right of frame or from above in the case of overhead office lighting. At 7:27 that loud bird squawk ... if the bird isn't visible in the scene why not move it to another room during filming? FFS! That's audio 101!
Why does the second half of the movie sound like he tried to rip off Hitchcock's second half of "Vertigo?" The part where he makes new girlfriend into old girlfriend. Oh wait... it's James Nguyen.
I'm sorry, but I can only think of one reason why someone would have their own name tattooed on their lower back. And that is so the person behind them doesn't forget their name when... stuff is happening.
I watched this movie in awe. Not of James Nguyen's cinematic incompetence--I was expecting that--but of his shameless ripping off of Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" AND his failure to grasp that movie's subtext. In "Vertigo," when Jimmy Stewart tries to mold Kim Novak into the image of his dead lover, it's supposed to be creepy and disturbing. That's the point. But in "Replica," when Joe does the same thing to Claudia, it's treated as sweet and endearing! No, James, this is not something a healthy person does! This is sick! And in "Vertigo," Kim Novak only submits to being remade in another woman's image because she feels guilty about having deceived and manipulated Stewart and wants to atone for both destroying his life and being an accomplice to murder. In "Replica," Claudia submits to it because she's written by James Nguyen, who apparently thinks that women are submissive doormats who are willing to submerge their own identities in order to please the men they love. Plus, the whole remaking thing serves no narrative purpose in "Replica." It's only included because it happens in "Vertigo." It's like Nguyen knew that "Vertigo" was a great movie because someone told him it was, but he doesn't understand WHY it was great! He's just mindlessly aping Hitchcock while being totally oblivious to his movies' psychological nuance.
I think I know why James Nguyen had Beta wooden rod have Claudia change herself to become more like Evelyn. I think it's an homage to Vertigo where a similar thing happened with James Stewart's character (though there, I think we're suppose to see James Stewart's character as a jerk, Nguyen probably didn't get that). Given how much James Nguyen references Hitchcock in his other films, I would say that this is very likely.
No, he clearly didn't get that. He thought it was sweet and endearing, and that a normal, healthy woman would submit to something so dehumanizing out of love, because James Nguyen doesn't understand how human beings think.
@@graemesmith6721 We're both right, though I do think it was an homage or at least a case of "I want to do something that happened in a movie I like" . James Nguyen is obviously a Hitchcock fan, just look at Birdemic or the fact he keeps casting Tippi Hedron. I will say that the whole "you should change to look like my former girlfriend" was messed up in Vertigo too, though I believe we were suppose to see it as a bit of messed up in Vertigo. Though I could be wrong, Hitchcock wasn't a fantastic person.
@@TheMellowFilmmaker No, he wasn't, but he was at least smart enough to know that what Jimmy Stewart's character was doing was sick. I'm not convinced James Nguyen understands that.
I have just realised... Birdemic claims to be inspired by 'The Birds' And with his love of Hitchcock it just makes sense... This is his version of 'Vertigo', especially with the love interest... but with all the stupidity of a Sci-Fi Kids Show The Hitchcock of Bad Movies is alive and well here xP
I'm fairly certain the plot involving the guy trying to make the replica be just like his old girlfriend is James Nguyen trying to recreate his own version of Vertigo, where a woman also dies around the half way point (I think?), and then the protagonist finds a woman who looks exactly like her, who he then starts a relationship with, insisting that she be exactly like the woman who died.
It's funny, I remember back in the Obscurus Lupa days, I reached out to her and asked if she would do this movie, only for her to tell me that it had yet to be released. Now, she's finally done it.........my life is complete!
SWEET :D
i cant believe she died in the worlds slowest and most preventable car accident. what a tragedy
contactless crash too
I think James Nguyen's view of what relationships are like is what creeps me out the most.
Congrats on the Rifftrax sponsorship!
Creepy ,stalkerish and no respect for personal boundaries
Thanks Rifftrax, both for sponsoring Allison and getting this movie out there for us to suffer through.

Tall blocky salesman stalks blonde supermodel. That's how ALL his movies start.

In his mind, that's a good way to let a girl know he likes them.

First review I've seen here. Allison is sharp, funny, and perceptive. Also, she's cute as pie.
Why doesn't Dr. G get more lines in Nguyen's other movies? He's the best actor there. I'm not even kidding.
Also, Rifftrax's response to the slow-speed car crash was hysterical.
The quality looks like cut scenes from a 90's FMV Game.
It's a shame James Nguyen missed out on his true calling: Sega CD game maker.
I am so there when the Rifftrax is done! Thanks Allison! This looks amazing.
did you nerdgasm when they asked you to look at this? just awesome! I mean i would be so star struck if they talked to me let alone acknowledged me!
According to IMDB Tippi Hendren, Kim Novak and _Christopher Reeve_ were in this? Did Nguyen just start splicing in scenes from other movies to pad out the runtime or something?
Pretty much, he uses movies and news footage.
He credited Tippi Hedren in The Birds by having her appear on a TV from her scene in Julie & Jack.
It looks like if James Wyn directed a movie in style of The Amazing Bulk. This made my weekend, thanks Lupa.
His last name is actually spelled Nguyen.

After witnessing the scenes of the protagonist wanting the clone to be like his dead girlfriend, I feel like James Nguyen had recently seen Vertigo.
James Nguyen really likes Hitchcock, this is just sci-fi Vertigo.
Except that Nguyen completely misses all of Vertigo's psychological complexity.
Just posted the Movie Nights Replica review to the RiffTrax Forums.
Thanks!
You're welcome, Allison!
To think not even Severin Films, the guys who distributed 'Birdemic', would go anywhere near this film.
5:20 Clearly she got the role in the much called for Julie and Jack remake.
Rifftrax, you're in the big leagues
So much better when she's alone. Great vid, Allison
Just perfect. Instant classic i may say.
I was going to leave the store and it's free Wifi, then I saw this... hang on laptop, hang on!
Um, Mr. Nguyen? You know Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo was supposed to look like a creep when he asked Judy to look like Madeleine right?
Wow yesterday a great new Phelous video and today Alison can top it, very well done!!!
How does this director manage to find the LEAST charismatic actors to play his leads
I think he just hires models rather than actual actors
Movies like this only make me appreciate the production values of 1989 "Things" even more.
Rifftrax sponsored Movie Nights? This must be a dream. Someone pinch me!
I purchased this from Rifftrax and watched it last night --- for the third time!!!!! Congrats on getting Rifftrax to support you!

The sound is almost on the level of A Certain Sacrifice.

Oh my god. Was James Nguyen ripping off the plot of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and Parts: The Clonus Horror? How do you even do that?
I thought the same thing. "He wants the clone of his dead girlfriend to dress and act like her? OMG, it's Vertigo!"
Also the "CLAUDIA!!! REPLICA!!!" scene is just the Robot Maria transformation from Metropolis mixed with Frankenstein.
Apparently incompetently.
