GR: Giant Robo (2007) Original Pilot (Subtitled)

- This is the pilot for GR: Giant Robo (2007), which appears to be much closer to the original manga version such as having a grown-up Daisaku Kusama instead of the young boy that he tends to be in many adaptations of the story. It was included as a bonus Special on one of the Blu-Ray releases
However, the final product was vastly different due to a staff change, so this pilot should be viewed as somewhat of a "What If" scenario.

the pilot indeed pays homage to the original design, but the final product was closer to the obarified and "darker" appearance, this pilot is what we usually find in shotaro ishinomori's anime adaptation such as cyborg 009 and kikaider
Tbh I wish that GR Giant robo could've been this. I like this even more after reading the manga. I also noticed that little reference they made to the tokusatsu adaptation with Robo's pose.
How can it be moving without a pilot at the controls?

It sucks we didn't get a follow-up to the OVA which ended on a massive cliffhanger.

It's still the greatest mecha show ever. The world is not perfect but we still got the masterpiece of Yasuhiro Imagawa.
I know people might freak out at this, but I personally love this even more than the 1992 version! Not only is it more like the 1967 Toei tokusatsu series (one of my top favorite Toei tokusatsu series of all time), but *very* close to Mitsuteru Yokoyama's manga!
I remember telling you this on Facebook (It's me Joel Endrizzi from the Classic Anime Hero page) but I will say it again.
This should have been the best GR series on par with the 2004 Tetsujin 28 anime but because someone at Soft Garage openly stated millenials wouldn't like this show if it stayed like this, they turned it into a generic Evangelion clone and thought that was acceptable.
And yet nobody really cared for the final "GR: Giant Robo" version unsurprisingly which makes me wonder if things weren't tampered with if this would have been a huge success
And yes imo it is better than the 1992 OVA which somehow manages that despite being only 3 minutes in length.

(Ps I'd love it if Toei did another GR tokusatsu in a manner similar to Tsuburaya's "Return of Aizenborg" special that is an epilogue to the original series. I'd like it if Goldenaut/Mr. Gold from the toku would possibly turn giant size and fight GR who returned from space to save humanity one last time from the threat of Big Fire. Maybe even include GR-3 in there somehow with the design Marmit's Vinyl Paradise toy gave him. I dunno just me rambling over nothint at this point)
@@DaimosZ I like the OVA's design simply because of the power behind it every time you see Giant robo move there is the sense of grandeur behind it. also secret weapon in rocket
@@DaimosZ I don't know, I think it looks pretty okay in comparison. I would've liked to watch this version (even though I myself am interested in GR Giant Robo), but personally I don't think it would've been any better than Giant Robo: The Animation. The Animation definitely wouldn't have been any better, this suffers from early digijank that a lot of shows back then had.

I love the Robo's ova design. But this... This is on a different level of good.
heres a hint people, gr-1 as represented here carries the same energy as tetsujin #27 as represented in the begining part of tetsujin 28 gou 2004 series. but thats just my perspective.

While it's indeed a crime we never got this version of the anime, am I the only one who genuinely *likes* the show we ended up with instead?
With the series soon to be fully subtitled, I guess people can make their own judgement then

The credits acknowledge Mitsuteru Yokoyama as the creator, even though he had been dead for a couple of years when this came out. The animation is good but still a bit weak compared to the OVA series.

Very few television anime series can match OVA qualities, because OVAs are usually made with much higher budgets and more time.

Ah, if only they had made *that* one as a series! I think it would have at least been translated (or dubbed) and released on DVD in America...
Fun fact- they had an entire English website for the actual product so they were clearly thinking about it. They just backed out for whatever reason.
@@revivalfromruins I remember checking out that English-language website years ago, which got me curious about GR GIANT ROBO. The actual series they wound up producing (though I haven't seen it with subtitles) seems plodding, with a lot of talking heads (and the constantly-seen BFN reports). Maybe it could all be edited down to a good 2-3 hour movie, I don't know... but I really wish they'd just have stuck close to the original manga.

i love how of all things this gets released and subbed and yet still noone wants to bother subbing the actual rest of the show. if youre a fansubber you cant call yourself a true fan if you dont take a crack at subbing it
It's probably because the actual thing that came out is significantly different and unfortunately generally considered a much weaker product than the pilot, sadly.
To be honest the first couple of episodes seemed fine to me (provoiding you distance it from the OVA), it would be a nice adition to Super Robot Wars either way.
Yeah I admit the show is merely ok, it's a lot like the Tokusatsu GR, just a bit more realisitc (no kaiju or anything) but knowing it was originally going to be this, it's bothersome.

Looks great especially this part with Torozon 2:15 So the actual 2007 series looks nothing like this? And is instead, a bit of a mess?
The actual series is now subbed so you can check it out for yourself but yes it isn't very well received
@@revivalfromruins Found a few GR 2007 episodes. The 2007 series isn't a mess..Some of.the monster designs are pretty good..they did a nice job with Torozon...The new Giant Robo isn't bad but seems too much like Raydeen..I prefer the original design [who doesn't?] GR 2007 is complicated - bogged down by way too much talk & not enough monster action. It overthinks itself when it ought to be having fun - like the original series and, like this pilot which, again is great.

2024 Update: almost finished GR: Giant robo. The story and characters are okay ish....but the mecha designs and fights? we eating GOOD. that GR2 design is probably my favorite ever. Still would've preferred this though.

I like GR-4 design the most tbh, that last scene between GR4 and GR5 where GR4’s eyes and mouths opened up and beamed out red light looked demonic and sick af, makes me wonder if GR1 also capable of something like that like opening up its faceplate.
I have a bit of a hot-take this pilot is not that great. I like the designs, following the manga would be a lot of fun but my issue with it comes in directly after Giant Robo rises from the ground. Before that, everything was pretty stylized with its use of color and direction, and then directly after it looks so unbelievably bland. The punch to the face looked cool but apart from that the direction looks off. I'm not too fond of the generic desert background, I hate that the robots don't invoke a sense of mass and scale, and the cut-ins of the enemy GR's were tacky. There's a way to adapt the manga but this isn't it.

Man these GR designs really didn’t age well, they look super cartoonish especially when portrayed in such high detail, it’s a shame ppl often look down on the 2007 adaptation with prejudice and with their minds already made up to hate anything other than the original.

@@trainfan-ks5hk If you're talking about the 2007 adaptation, I think the story is not that good, I like the cold and uncaring nature of the mercenary organization piloting the stolen GRs and the fact that they commanded the GRs to destroy each other for the sake of human greed, but the ending feels unfinished and rushed as hell.

I don't know, I personally really like the old designs, but didn't mind what I saw of the new designs for GR Giant Robo except maybe Giant Robo himself.
That’s far too personal and blind of a criticism as the works original cartoonish looks combined with aspects of realism have had deeper aspects beyond what media does where a character looks a certain way where it narratively feels odd, such as almost half naked or proportioned a certain way, or where the “realism” ignores all other possibilities of things that can happen.
