For my job hauling boats & pontoons we had the 5.4 and the 4.6 with the 2 valve, we ran them 6 days a week 10 hours a day all summer. Motors are absolutely solid. The 5.4 made it to over 300k before engine died and the 4.6 made it to 280k , and we were hauling 6-10 thousand lbs a day. Completely underrated

I bought my 99 f250 5.4 2v new in 2000 when I was 20 yrs old I still have it and it’s my daily driver. I’ve never had any problems other than normal wear/maintenance I just put a fresh motor and tranny in a couple months back at 320k miles I kept my (running) originals so I can give it to my grand kids when I’m an old man. I bought a higher mileage 5.4 about a month or 2 ago. I bought it at 256,9xx it's an 02 F250. I had to neuter the 4wd (I don't need it anyway) and it needs some normal maintenance here and there (brakes a power steering line and new spark plugs) but I've driven it from central Ohio to Pittsburgh and back and it handled the hills and the entire trip like it was nothing. In fact I even saw a GAIN in my MPG from 11.7 to 13.6! Keep in mind I've done nothing to this truck but neuter the 4wd a few weeks before the trip, change the air filter and change the oil! It was a tank service truck from when it was new until 2014 when the company sold it to the farmer I bought it off of at 246,xxx miles. He had it from then until I bought it at 256,9xx and it's been really good to me so far. I'm so glad I bought it!

Depending on the plant, these engines did have head gasket issues. I also replaced both exhaust manifolds, passenger side had some broken studs, installed a new timing set and helicoiled the spark plug threads with the CalVan kit, new rear main seal too. I always kept up on oil changes, and it still looked new inside. You could still see the crosshatching on the cylinder walls. It runs like a top! Have about 158,000 on it, I'll drive it until the sheet metal rusts away. Still looking pretty decent though with it being on it's 19th Minnesota winter!

I work at Ford. U-Haul told us they sell our E-Series box trucks at auction when they hit 500K - 600K miles. I see these trucks from before 2005 model year (the big change) at a flea market I go to, used by vendors to haul their stuff. They have 700K to 900K miles on them. I imagine U-Haul kept up the regular maintenance on them. One owner I talked to told me the only thing his needed, with 600K miles on it when he got it, was lower ball joints.

  • @Professionalpatternrecognizer

The main issues with the 5.4 3v relates back to the OEM oil pump. The trucks were shipped with an aluminum backing plate on the back of the pump that would start to deflect under load after about 30k miles and lose oil pressure. That’s why the bank 2 cam phasers always blew out on them because that was dead last in the oil loop. The cast iron backed Melling oil pump released in the late 2010s remediated that issue while also getting you 20% more oil volume for your money. If you’re inside the front cover for any reason on a 3v, get a Melling oil pump in there and you won’t have to worry about premature wear issues.

I bought a 99 F150 XLT from a guy I knew at 190K miles on the truck. It was run on a budget so I did some maintenance on it and was amazed by how trouble free it was compared to much newer and way more expensive trucks. For the engine all I did was replace the vac lines, went to Denso coils with Motorcraft plugs, belt, hoses, thermostat, and some misc stuff. The engine burned about a half a quart of oil every 500 miles but that was it. As for the truck it needed upper control arms up front, shocks, brakes all around with new rotors, and HVAC blend door. All in for less than $1500 in parts it became a solid reliable truck.

They make a really nice kit that fixes the thread problem for the 2valve. I also think they have one for the 3 valve one also. Cal van is the company name and cost about 200$-300$. I hear great reviews about them with great results. So many people crap on the triton motors but I think they are great. No matter what you do with them. However doing regular maintenance and putting quality parts and products in them definitely makes for a higher success rate! Now I can only speak on the 5.4 never had a 4.6 or 6.8 but would like to get a 6.8 to see how well they do.

Have a 2001 Expedition with the 2V. Have had it about 15 years. Has 265,000 still going strong. Never had any problem with plugs. Poorly designed intake did crack a few years ago. But other than that it's been solid. I was a 2nd gen Volvo mech. so I'm very familiar with cars that run a long time LOL. I didn't realize this was a 2V until about a year ago.

I haved owed several 5.4 and 4.6 2 value motors. I agree the best motors. Easy to work on. What I would recommend is after a 125 thousand miles change the timing chain and pulleys and tensioner. The tensioner is known to blow out you get start to get a ticking at Start up and will get worst over time. After it's changed you be shocked how much more power it has and the gas mileage will improve dramatically. Changing the timing chain is in the maintenance after a hundred thousand or so.. Also there is a large vacuum hose behind the intake manifold there known to leak because of the intense heat.

True, little bit of oil pressure loss from some sludge kills the 3v.

Being an old automotive technician I’ve seen my share of 5.4 3-valve engines. The oil pump is the root cause of the majority of the problems that engine has. With Melling’s high volume and increased pressure pump, new roller followers, cast iron tensioners and the latest generation of Ford cam phasers coupled with 5W30 synthetic oil they’ll run better than new and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles. I’ve modified them and even with spotless oil change histories they still show evidence of oil starvation inside the oil pump, and on the cam journals . The Melling pump stops this from getting any worse. If you don’t do the pump you are really just prolonging the inevitable by putting chain parts in one.

I was provided one of these motors, worn out, in place of the planned motor for my AC Cobra replica and I couldn't afford to change it at the time. Ripped off!
So we made it work, had Troyer Performance send me a rebuild kit, and had a builder do the work and put 3 x 50mm throttle bodies on it..., a Haltec E11 V2 computer and a T45 manual gearbox and put 330HP on the wheels, and it has been going well for some years now!
So yep, a different application but it works and goes well and is a lot of fun!

the entire exhaust, timing chain, plugs and cops. runs good until the left front plug popped out. Put it back in and tightened to 23 bounds so far so good. Only have 130 k on it i just use it as a work truck.

I just did the plugs in mine at 176 thousand kilometers...the secret to the plugs is this....the problem is that when the original plugs get removed they pull the aluminum threads because aluminum will gull to steel and so the reaction causes the plug to be basically welded to the aluminum threads...What i do is once i get the coils removed i blow out all the holes thoroughly...I then spray wd40 or shop lubricant down into each spark plug hole..i shoot quite a bit down in...once i do that i slowly back the plug out moving it back and forth allowing that fluid to seep down the threads...you will start to feel the plugs get loose...they come out nice and lubricated ..this also helps with installing the new ones even though you are using anti sieze...yes the excess lubricant runs into the cylinder but who cares it just gets burned up om start up...my trucks plugs came out and went in perfect...

The problem with the 2v is they blow out. The problem of them being stuck is usually in the 3v.

    • @kevinvezina6535

@@KonaBlueSVT yeah ..they blow out because the threads get pulled the first time they are changed...

    • @KonaBlueSVT

Could be, my experience was they blew out close to 50k miles later. The main problem is 3 threads in the head.

@@KonaBlueSVT well i dont know what heads your talking about but my heads had a hell of alot more than 3 three threads...there is at least an inch of threads...my plugs screwed in all the way down...its inexperienced people trying to do a job with no experience at all that cause the issue and then blame it on the engine...ive been a mechanic for 35 years and have changed literally thousands of plugs...

2nd owner 02 larry 5.4 almost 190,000 got it with around 40,000. It still runs strong I kept up with the oil changes but neglected the coolant I had a local shop change the water pump and flush the coolant but when the coolant looked like oil i did it myself and know they didn't flush it. after that flush the intake started leaking I got a quote of 1,300 to have it fixed i declined did it myself and the part costed around 300.00 i got new ford plugs and but some accel coils and after i did the replacement their was a misfire. I'm not sure what happened? I watched tons of yt videos and seen one where the guy tapped valves on a older ford model i thought maybe a valve is stuck. I took off the valve cover to get a look at cylinder 1 where the misfire was and the rocker was off and i put it back on and sprayed wd40 all over it and rotated the crank by hand several times and the rocker was solid like the others. i put it back together and it was fixed!I had the stealership fix the heater and they charged me around 1,200 to change the blend motor. The heater worked and the ac worked but that summer it went out again! i watched ford tech on youtube change the seals out of the controller in the dash for less then 5.00 in seals i did the job and fixed the vents myself. But doing those jobs made me bond with my truck! it never left me stranded Thank the Lord! Take care of the truck and the truck will take care of you!
