Ah yes, the old "replace the starter before checking to see if the engine is locked up". LOL. Everybody says rebuild the engine but the easiest thing would be to find one of the other 3 million 97-03 F150 trucks that are still running. Enjoyed the video.

The mileage is because of a bad solder point on the back of the cluster circuit board, its super common and a really easy fix, just reflow the odometer pins. I have a 2002 so I know all about these things lol

You know I have watched a ton of "will it run" videos and I've noticed the exact same recipe for unsticking a motor. I've tried my best to get everyone on these threads to try what my dad taught me when I purchased my first stuck motor. I've used it every single time I come across one and it never fails. Good luck. 🤔🤠👍⭐🇺🇲

@JMRRebuilders well obviously that motor was definitely a piece of work but under normal conditions my dad taught me to put one part diesel and a little part of marvel mystery oil together and fill each cylinder with the mixture and put the plugs back in and wait 24hrs. Then turn the flywheel because he said that using the bolt on the harmonic balance was wasting his time and mine. 🤔🤣😂🤣😂😝😜🤪🤠👍⭐🇺🇲

I shudder to think what it will be like for guys in 30 years who try to do “will it start” videos of modern trucks that have been sitting or abandoned for years. Basically all new pickups are push button start, electronic parking brakes, electronic shifters, etc. You won’t be able to read the mileage, you won’t have the original key fob, you won’t be able to release the parking brake, or get it in neutral to pull, and no doubt numerous other features that will have failed. Hate to break it to our kids and grandkids who love vehicles 😂

Go to the junkyard and find a good short block and throw those good heads and a new intake on it. Those are great little engines and they’ll last forever if you change the oil and coolant on time. Even the auto trans in that truck will last a lifetime. I’ve got 340,000 miles on my 03 only issue I have is an oil leak that’s it.

I've got a 05 ranger I just picked up that seems to be abit of a pain. It's a xlt 3.0 with the 5 speed manual.
Didn't run when I towed it home. Guy said it died after a 2 hour drive and just wanted it gone.
After some tail chasing, I took off the downstream cat. That was intact, but full of chunks from of the upstream cats.
    Yay.
But after that, the truck starts and runs.
On 5 of the 6 cylinders.
    F*ck my life.
Dead cylinder has black plug and low compression.
If I spray PB blaster (oil) in the cylinder, the compression shoots up.
    Working theory is as follows:
FUBAR Injector dumping fuel in the cylinder. That soaked the rings causing them to stick the the piston. Causing low compression in the cylinder.
Excess fuel was getting dumped down the header into the upstream cat. Where the heat caused the fuel to detonate and melt the cat.
Melted cat chunks clogged exhaust and starved truck of air. Causing it to not run.
    Here's where I'm at now:
At the recommendation of an old mechanic friend, I mixed up some "secret sauce" PB blaster + marvel mystery oil + transmission fluid.
Dumped it down the dead cylinder where I'm letting it sit for about 4 days to soak and hopefully unstick the Rings. Fixing the compression issue in theory.
If that does, I'll move on to diagnosing the exact cause of the fueling issue for that cylinder. Hoping it's just a bad injector rather than something electronic.
If the secret sauce doesn't unstick the Rings, I have to decide if I want to take the head off of that bank, drop the oil pan and try to remove the piston to replace the rings on just that one.
After the compression and fueling issues are fix, there's still the cat situation.
Best case there is its just one of the 3 cats that's toast and I only need to replace the one.
Oh and Im in commiefornia. So I can't just use normal epa cats. I have to get f*cking "CARB" approved cats. That cost twice as much.
    Thays where I'm at.

Replace engine with a used engine. The truck is worth it. You could rebuild the 4.2 V6 that it has, but why bother, when it may not be rebuildable due to a cracked block. Whoever abandoned that truck did so when it was only 8 years old, meaning it may have thrown a rod or they knew it had a cracked block. When you pull that engine out, go ahead and pull with the transmission still on it, because the idiot that drove it some 17 years ago probably destroyed that as well
