I used to see Rowland in Fitzroy and finally got to meet him through a friend. Ran into him several times and then he came to my home. I'll always remember the thrill of him sitting on my couch, playing my husband's home made guitar and commenting on how fat my cat Lulu was. He checked out my books and recommended several to me. I still have that list somewhere.
Nice to see both Mick Harvey and the Roland in the same project-le deux hommes gentils-always Rolandesque....and Mick if you were'nt around, no one else would've been!!!!-I think you know what I mean!!!???...you're a super drummer....but no one beats Roland's guitarring...he's a 1 man band, just needs drum and base....it's a rare and underrated quality-humility.!!...both Roland and Mick have these, despite their musical genius!!
i love Rowland's expressions in this video , you can see he is definetly feeling every Word and every sound in the song, you don't get to see performances like this anymore. also Mick , stunning . some of the greatest musicians of all times, you can Say this thanks to their true passion and commitment....oh and the incredible music
I can't get enough of this. Didn't really know of Rowland at the time - I am 46 and should have. Was a Bad Seeds fan, too slow on Birthday uptake, though like many was a big fan of "Shivers". I love Rowlands tremelo work on this, truly stunning. Has been an after the fact influence on me if that makes sense. Priceless, timeless, one of our countrys greatest unsung heroes. I wish I had been more aware and taken the time to see him live.
Ever wandered of These Immortal Souls? Some prefer low key local bandings to internationally raised understandings: keep one's head low and one's spirit high were watchword thereof, some might say. For whatever reason, Crime & The City Solution's 'Her Room of Lights' has always been connected, in my mind at least, with, if not Roland's sound, then at least some spirit of his musicall.
From a Saturday morning music show called Recovery. Bands would play live while probably feeling below par at that time of the day. There is another classic performance by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Spencer was obviously still feeling refreshed from the night before, he went completely apeshit. Well worth tracking down.
Poor bass player playing the same line over and over for 7 minutes! By watching Howard performing live I realized that most of his songs are written in a simple bass line and a minimal beat but they never get boring.. I don't know how he does that! he's one of a kind!
Good observation. There’s a simplicity to the songs(they’re simple but not simplistic) but they’re gripping. The guitar tone is a definite part of it . And the lyrics, of course. And his delivery.
alejandro quiles yes! he recorded a lot with Rowland in Teenage Snuff Film and Pop Crimes. All the drums, some organs and other stuff. Mick is a great drummer.
Exactly Mick is the kind of drummer that does everything backwards to his style never giving a classic drum beat, especially in The Birthday Party. Some very good back beats like Fears of Gun, its very intelligent drumming.!
It occurred, in Melbourne Australia, in about 96 or 97, in a TV studio, broadcast live across Australia, between 9am and 12pm on a Saturday morning in front of a small audience. The show was called "Recovery." Many great performances made then. To find them search... Live on Recovery ...and see what shows up.
hey you're right, never noticed those other two. Even thought their great tube amps it has that cut sound that the twin has. Fender Deville its kinda british-voxish sound.

That is amazing! One lucky lady!
what did the list consist of?!
@@kw2785 I would very much like to know that as well! Would be interesting to see.
Don’t leave us in suspense! We need his reading list! So cool
HELLO ..
reading list ?
Mick Harvey keeps going up in my estimation.
Australia delivered a God damned anvil with this guy. So much great rock and roll has come from there.
Never got to see Rowland live. I believe he flew out when I flew in. That Jaguar cried.

Its a 'Crime' and there's No Solution
Never too late for a musical blessing.
Such an iconic performance. Rowland was one of a kind.
shit, it took me half the song to realize that Mick Harvey was on drums!
indeed. me too, but I didn't look until it started to bother me that I recognised the snare hits.
One more time....Out of the black and into the ether 🌹🚬

Amazing love you
Damn Rowland S Howard surely can make his Jaguar sing and screech in terror at the same time.
Crown prince of the crying jag does what crown prince of the crying jag must!
Mega Australian 🇦🇺 guitarist, no pretences, heart on sleave straight shooter.

He's a bloody freak! And what a sound on that beautiful guitar... a true legend gone too early
I would be perfectly happy to play that for 7 minutes with someone like him. I would be a pleasure.
Tension and promise. And man, did he deliver on it.
Good observation. There’s a simplicity to the songs(they’re simple but not simplistic) but they’re gripping. The guitar tone is a definite part of it . And the lyrics, of course. And his delivery.
Its Brian Henry Hooper, far above and beyond any pedestrian bassguy
Great guitar man! R.I.P
Stunning.
chills
This is better than the James Webb Telescope
It's great to see this in such clear quality, thanks :)
How good is this? 40K views and no dislikes...unheard of!
amazing
How many TV shows would allow a seven minute song to be played in full? Great footage, thanks.
And mick harvey on the drum's?
alejandro quiles yes! he recorded a lot with Rowland in Teenage Snuff Film and Pop Crimes. All the drums, some organs and other stuff. Mick is a great drummer.
+EigeDequei Z. yeah, he is a very unique drummer. plays things very differently.
Exactly Mick is the kind of drummer that does everything backwards to his style never giving a classic drum beat, especially in The Birthday Party. Some very good back beats like Fears of Gun, its very intelligent drumming.!
He's excellent
Mick Harvey rulez!
I was going to attempt sobriety , at least til tomorrow ... after having watched this ... you know what ? * Gives us a sec ...
Wow!

Rowland using two Fender Deville, It's so weird...maybe the channel didn't have he's usual silverface Fender Twin.
hes playing 4! 2 on the other side too, even weirder. doesnt sound as abrasive without the twin
hey you're right, never noticed those other two. Even thought their great tube amps it has that cut sound that the twin has. Fender Deville its kinda british-voxish sound.
Think it's not so much the amp voicing as the lack of a trem circuit on the Devilles.
He's just naked without it.
wow, he using line 6 amps.
A big loss for the music
