Why does the charcoal filter need replacement if there is a vent connected to the top of the microwave that vents the air to the outside? Hoping someone can answer this. I understand it's used if you are recirculating air and dont have a duct connected to the microwave. Maybe this is simply a 3rd filter for the same purpose of sending air outside.
Good question. I haven't checked, though always assumed that if you have top/rear venting, then stove fan and microwave fan will just go straight out and it doesn't matter. But maybe the microwave interior doesn't exhaust out the top/rear like the normal fan.

What's your model number on the microwave. I'm struggling with my JVM3160EF8ES. The filter they suggest is NOT what came with it.
My cabinets seem to be covering up the screws to take off the panel sadly…
