It’s very timely that you’ve posted this and it’s great to have insight from someone who does filming for a living.
I’ve just upgraded from an SE (original vintage) to a 14 Pro Max (I take great care of stuff and make it last).
The change was significantly driven by the video capabilities for use on a ski trip next week. I suspect it’ll effectively replace my GoPro for some stuff - though I trust the GoPro’s unbreakabity more.
For other readers, I reckon Matti’s right about the size of the Max - it’s a bit huge & I poss should have gone for just the Pro but I have it now and will get used to it for the next 7 years 😂

I went from the iPhone 12 Mini to the iPhone 14 Pro and the difference is night and day! From the battery life (I had to bring an external battery with me everywhere / Had to charge the Mini 2-4x’s a day) to the cameras, the 14 Pro is SO much better! Definitely worth the upgrade for me since I take a lot of photos and videos.

@@ricanyp The size wasn’t a terrible adjustment. But I do miss the small size of the Mini. There’s definitely more pro’s than con’s to the 14 Pro though like the speakers on 14 Pro are way better than the Mini’s.

Another thing we should have is separated AF and Exposire controls.
Once u set up exposure, focus is always locked.
Even if you’re note using the AE/AF lock.
I just watched your iPhone 13 Pro and mini comparison and then this! I'm about to transition from android (currently a Note 10+ user, been using it since its release) to iPhone for the first time and I was almost sold to getting the 13 mini for the form factor (plus price point and specs of course) but I'm glad you mentioned about why you switched to 14 Pro. Made me rethink! 😅 I too wanted something not so big as the Pro Max or my Note 10+ but I would be needing the cameras for taking better videos and photos for my YT channel. Thank you for sharing this, and if you have more thoughts to help me decide, let me know! Would love to get the most out of this major switch in my life. 😂

I upgraded from my XS Max and I’m so much more inspired to shoot video, even over photos! 4K cinematic mode is way better than last year.
Matti haapoja and Hardsoul Brother's channel always come with interesting content.
One thing I didn’t catch you mentioning was the horrible flares everywhere in low light…. They always get mirrored to another area of the frame making all night shots with bright lights unuseable. Some people say “just change the angle” or “align the flares with the lights”…. Easy to edit out in stills in LR but I can’t tell you how many vacation shots have been ruined by those lens flares from lights at night in video…

I waited to upgrade my phone, from 8 plus to 14 pro max (I can't do small phones any more) and it's crazy the difference. It's actually made me want to be more creative. Soooo worth the wait! 👌🏻

@@leigh4326 It’s for sure heavier than the 8 plus but surprisingly easy to get use to, my wrist hasn’t hurt at all.

I’m a real estate agent, i use my phone for listing photos and UA-cam videos. I upgrade every year for the camera upgrades. I had a basic canon m50 for UA-cam videos ended up getting rid of it because I honestly don’t want to get into cameras, I love being able to quickly take photos and videos. Def would love more improvements to the ultra wide camera, shooting indoor photos still isn’t the best but it’s def better. And for UA-cam videos the iPhone is better than the canon m50 with a sigma lens.

Upgraded from the 12 to 14 Pro a few months ago and have no regrets! I still shot stills on my Sony a7ii but am loving the 14 Pro for video. I am 100% with you on the Always On feature. Lasted about a day and then turned it off. Cheers!

Now I'm using Samsung because there were a few situations where the wife's iPhone (13 pro) could not cope with something or made a problem. In general, there is a problem with phones with the UW camera being treated too indifferently, and I also think that it should be of much better quality, as brighter and better zoom, which could be good for portraits with the limitation of such a strong portrait creation algorithm. The iPhone takes very good pictures (not the best), but movies for years only the iPhone takes good, androids only acceptable
great content.. My only wish for the iPhone improvements is better low light video but then we can't have it all can we
I went from a 12 Mini to the 14 Pro in December, I miss the light weight and easy one hand use of the Mini but the cameras on the Pro more than makes up for that loss along with the greatly improved battery life that is in a whole nother league
Got the mini when it came out and it’s getting too small, hands weren’t that big when I got the phone but different story now, Face ID randomly for disabled after the warranty ran out and the battery is terrible

I think the 13 pro takes better videos than the 14 pro, I know it’s kinda an unpopular opinion but checking the comparison they made on the moment channel it’s clear that there’s something wrong with the 14. The sharpening and contrast is too much, that’s not a progress to my eyes. Main reason why I decided to not upgrade. Oh and if you check the comment section of the video I’m talking about you’ll see that I’m not the only one who noticed that😢

I came from DROID because of the camera. I've had every phone pretty much and hands down iPhone takes better pictures. On the occasion it over processes, I just use the raw camera in Lightroom. What drives me crazy about the video app is NOT BEING ABLE TO LOCK WHITE BALANCE. I use artificial light in some of my cooking videos and it changes every 5 secs sometimes with little movement. I also find some of the auto focusing to be annoying but my Pixel did that too. I wish it had some manual control to not have shallow depth of field (control F stop in video). I know I can "get an app for that" but at the price, cmon!!
Have you tried Sandmarc lenses and filters? I bought the whole gamut, but hate to admit I never use them. Just curious if you think they are worth the effort?
I can not believe the amount of people that are Ok with paying for things on credit cards. It is mind boggling. I just can't, I use my credit card as a debit card and pay it off every month. Great video. These phones are getting crazy. I have the iPhone 12 Pro, I will hold off for another few years......we shall see LOL
Matti, do you make any typical tweaks to the default exposure and F stop settings in the various video modes? I’ve seen other channels suggesting dropping exposure to 0.7 and F stop to 7.1 and wondered if you had an opinion. Thanks 😊
Thanks for this video. As an event/documentary photographer now been asked to take some video footages, I went on a hunt for the best gimbal for my heavy setup of A7RV + Tamron 35-150mm. After trying out the newest Crane 4 and DJI RS3 Pro, I returned both and got a pocket size Insta360 Flow gimbal for my iPhone 13 Mini that I "Upgraded" two years ago from the heavy iPhone 12 Pro to save my arms and back and the many visits to the chiropractor. Especially after stumbled into your 720P vs 1080P vs 4K video, I think I would just shoot 1080P on the iPhone 13 Mini to save storage space. I do miss the lidar from iPhone 12Pro and may upgrade to iPhone 15 Pro if the rumor is true that the titanium material will be much lighter than the Stainless steel models. My real wish is a 1TB iPhone 15 Pro Mini that I am welling to pay more than a iPhone 15 Pro Max if Apple makes one! Thanks again for making this video.

Only reason I am considering an iPhone 15 pro/max is the red/black color combo. My favorite colors to match.
I have 14 pro, as a photographer it is useful especially with video as still using DSLR. One thing
I dislike is the so called dynamic island, hate it’s now part way into screen, why can’t it be right on edge as before.
Agreed. Held the 14 pro in my hand for a few minutes and the dynamic island really bugged me more than any iPhone I’ve ever used. Annoying to say the least
I went to the Apple store to check the 13 mini but the only thing is that is attractive is the price since is the cheapest from the line that has all the new features but is just too small, battery life based on reviews is not great either, even if its light daily use you still wanna use the phone that you bought, The best bang for your dollars would be the 14 Pro, Longer battery life, that extra lens, 6.1 inch display and it has new island feature.

I'm thinking about getting a used one of these when people update for just a camera, because I don't want an iPhone as my regular phone. I appreciate having an SD card and headphone jack on my $280 Moto Ace 5G. Has the fingerprint scanner, larger battery and 8 core processor. Why is Apple so backwards on some things? They announce something new and I'm like, "I've had that on my budget phones for years." Great camera, but I want a phone with a camera built-in, not a camera with a phone built-in.
10 days ago, this was true being the only phone good for video. But for those not in the apple eco system, Samsung s23, they cracked it video wise. Just recieved mine as didn't want to rejoin apple system, will let you know how I get on. But honestly, phones these days, gave up waiting for perfect vlog camera... phones are there.

I actually compared my iphone 11 pro max camera with my friend's 14 pro max and didn't notice any notable differences.
A lot of it can be addressed by a really good software update.

I almost never use the ultra wide camera. Too much distortion and the quality just isn’t great compared to the wide camera. I use the 3x camera far more.

The problem with the wide camera is the minimum focusing distance. It's laughable compared to most others flagships. I understand that for close-ups they've got the macro camera, but,come on - that's such a low quality sensor that the images are unusable without spending an hour on edits.
I've been thinking of switching from my s22 ultra to an iPhone. I haven't used an iPhone in a good 6-8 years. I've been thinking about seeing if an iPhone is worth a try or if I should stay with Samsung. I see some great features on the iPhone that I would like to see on the Samsung, but I still haven't seen them.

I went from Hi-End Andorid to Iphone 14pro and it was only The Camera what i like. Really nothing else. Slow charging battery and not the best display on the market . Dynamic island? Just for fun. Nice to have friend for my other apple products.But still overpriced....

Why is nobody talking about the wider focal length on the Tele lens? In comparison to the iPhone 13pro you need to be almost 1 inch more from the object distanced ? That means the iPhone 13 Pro shoots better and sharper videos from near objects? Wtf Apple? Matti whats your opinion?

At this point, I think you should wait. last year I bought iPhone 13 pro in February even though I love my 13 pro I don’t think is worth it to buy a phone when will be launching a new one in 6-7 months. The sweet spot is to buy a new iPhone from Movember to the beginning of January (never on release date)
