- Charlene - I've never been to me 1982
Hey lady, you lady, cursing at your life
You're a discontented mother and a regimented wife
I've no doubt you dream about the things you'll never do
But, I wish someone had talked to me
Like I wanna talk to you
Oh, I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me
Please lady, please lady, don't just walk away
'Cause I have this need to tell you why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of a weary heart that has lived million lies
Oh, I've been to Nice and the isles of Greece
while I've sipped champagne on a yacht
I've moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo
and showed 'em what I've got
I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things
that a woman ain't supposed to see
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me
Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children
that might have made me complete
But I took the sweet life, I never knew
I'd be bitter from the sweet
I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring
that costs too much to be free
Hey lady I've been to paradise,
But I've never been to me
as ive always played this song.. i remembered my mom...
she loves this song
How come people say this is a bad song? I can listen to it over and over. And I'm a straight male.
Straight male? I'm not sure why that even matters.
***** well, it was featured in a movie about Drag Queens.
Meade Music, well, now I see what you mean, but drag queens can be straight, bi, or gay.
***** possibly, but this song was also quoted on "Will and Grace" so...
Meade Music, I see. You've given very good examples to clarify your statements. I do appreciate that.
ace song - classic heavy c/w lyrics, not to be listened to when really hungover
Nice is absolutely no where near London at all
Wow, that's quite an outfit.
And I say that in the worst possible way.
British fashion? of the early 80's.
When I first heard this as a tween, I completely missed that it was meant as a cautionary tale. Instead, it saw it as a "to do" list. I mean, what are these things that "a woman ain't s'posed to see"?! That sounds like a dare! Guess what, I've been to paradise, AND I've also been to me. Maybe you can't have it all, but you sure can have quite a lot. (*I've yet to be undressed by kings, but I'm working on it...)
+Allison Milewski... ahhh, very cute story. You were a tween, and I was around 21 and just getting into adulthood, serious relationships... but I Rarely heard it on the radio up in Seattle... it was tough to catch!
Heard this song first as a child, and still love it as much now as I did then, beautiful song/singer
@Louise coe, Me too,... stays with you....
Same 👌
Same here
Charlene Duncan (once married to record producer Larry Duncan) was born in Hollywood in 1950. She actually recorded this in 1976, but it didn't enjoy the commercial success in 1977 that the 1982 re-release enjoyed.
On Motown label
Remembered sunny days and freedom on my passed away brother and nephew when grass was greener and hapiness been to me and nobody hurt me and sung these songs verily enjoyed my life.
1982 is over I know how happy we were
I really like this song I love and super smooth, sweet voice, cold like freezing. I love u miss charlene duncan hope to see in personal...
I have to keep watching and listening to this song every now and again, because I just can't resist listening to the best song of all time.
Terry Egan your man-card has been revoked ; )
Terry Egan check out THE Solid Gold version for her to sing the 1977 version.
@@seeburg220if you're a grown adult man who still believes in talking snakes and donkeys and burning bushes that give commands, and putting all the animals on the planet in a boat and ghosts and angels and demons and skywizards and invisible friends who walk on water and turn it into wine and raise the dead then your adult and man card both should be revoked because there is no god or Christ or Jesus. The Bible is fiction.
この人がシャーリーンさんなんですね。初めて聞いたときから、30年以上経って初めて拝見しました。彼女は私の人生の中に、しっかりと入っています。本当にすばらしい歌を歌う方です。
One of, if not THE most beautiful song eve written & performed
Blows my mind that there are people who think this.
agree
As a prank I put this song as one of the soundtracks to play during a feminist gathering and got kicked out so quickly.
chamboyette853 Obviously they had no clue that this song was originally written from the male standpoint. They lyrics were completely different - but with the same idea. The songwriter thought that the song would sound better coming from the female perspective, so the lyrics were rewritten to fit a female. I've been the token male in several Feminist Studies classes which I've thoroughly enjoyed and I really don't understand why there was a problem with the song. Unless it was the first version with the spoken word.
Rusty Wolfe links please...
chamboyette853 There's a version on here by the great Howard Keel with the original lyric from the male standpoint. I'm not sure where the spoken word version is on here or nor. This one here is the one that was re-cut and re-released after Mary McGregor had a hit with it as the follow up to Torn Between Two Lovers. I'll look and see if I can find you some links.
Rusty Wolfe OK thanks. I wait to hear from you.
Wunderwunderschön:)🥰💐🎶🎵🎶💗
Everyone that likes this check out the Solid Gold appearance where she sang the 1977 version
My parents and the neighbors use to try to figure this song out and they would spend hours at cook outs discussing it back in the 80's LOL!!!
one of my favorite songs... it's so deep
IfI were Me, I'd be Me.
Sh's really beautiful. I didn't realize that.
Beautiful song to contemplate on
Hilarious!!!
Quite an accomplishment to get listeners to BEG for "we built this city" instead.
I heard it was used as petty torture on continuous play for hardened criminals.
Yes! 😂
Have this 45 on Motown label from 82❤ still play it on my great stereo..
What a song.!
Love it.!❤
The greatest. female singer of all time. The greatest. song of all time by any female, the greatest.
wish I could write songs like this one for my own pleasure ... and for my boyfriend !! :-)
I don't understand the meaning much until now 😭
There’s a revision in the works for a man from the group *Nice Guys* to sing this, from the male point of view. They’re changing “Lady” to, “M’Lady”.
😁
hi charlene, as i look at you, im thincking about how i've through come such a horrible event, my mother's suicide, this song was playing when i found her...this song talks about how she lived her life, dragging me, with, i never told you that.. but i also take a look at my self, and am soo glad that my life is different, and how glad i know christ, as my savior...i also want to thanckyou, for loving me your own special way..your special,to me,-n-your beautifull,i'll love you forever...
Beautiful and meaningful song. Wonderful voice. Horrible outfit. 😜😝
2024 is in some steep competition for bad pants 😂
Irony was that in the decadent 1980s wh0ring was not very subtle
Shrek 3 ftw.
a lot of regrets but you try to tell those of your pain so they may heed the warning?
Yes, very beautiful song, such as the woman singing it. I could listen to this song over and over as I dissect it.
Yes, I can imagine you listening to it over and over as you dissect the woman.
It’s very unsettling.
Lipsync?
Nope.
That's not the interpretation of this song AT ALL.
She's been everywhere but she's never gotten what she's wanted on a day to day basis for herself.
What lines are you reading between -- the ones written in the 40s? Sheesh...
stillayl THERE DOPES THAT WILL NEVER GET WHAT THIS MEANT.
😁 It’s the anthem of “Nice Guys” - but they changed it to *Mm’LADY*
This was the decade when women had huge bushes.
Thank you Charlene, you sang a heart touching song.
I always thought this was a love song... But when I learned English enough to get the lyrics right oh man...
beautiful melodies and dirty lyrics
Nope.
If it was the way you said it was, every single pro life group would have been on top of that lyric in 2 seconds flat.
What EVER.
Beautiful song. It was an era of nothing but lip sync, all the way down to the fade-out at the end!
oh no this was so hip clothes back then, and in the beggining of the Lady Diana look alike clothes
Beautiful songs like this never end. They live on in your heart forever. LOL .
esta musica e tudo na minha vida nao tenho palavras simplesmente tudo me fais lenbrar do meu passado o primeiro beijo me fais lembrar tudo adoro esta musica
Attention feminists.
Attention Nice Guys.
This has to have some of the worst lyrics of any hit of its era. Imagine in an actual woman was telling you these lyrics not singing them. You'd think she was so full of herself and so uninsightful, you'd be sick of her in ten minutes...
It would be exactly like socialising in most churches. 😁
Geez, what happened to this beautiful woman?
Sorry about the late reply but i just read this comment. The dress is not that outlandish. Barbera Carrera dressed just like this in the film never Say Never with Sean Connery. In the scene when she tells 007 to write that she was the best lay and then gets blown away.
The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Great song with extra cheese
I love the Raggedy Ann costume.
adoro essa musica!!!! linda demais.
Touches the heart
Great song, but she was so young when she sang it.That she has been to paradise doesn't mean she can't have a husband and children no more, at her age. Best of both worlds :)
According to Charlene the song was written for her in mind in the 1970s but the details in the lyrics were just artistic license. I'm sure overall it's a poetic take on a wealthy, unmarried, childless middle-aged+ woman (spinster) who's been through it all in life but will likely die completely alone with no one to inherit her colorful legacy...
You are just as bad. It is indeed spelt Nice... but Nice is in France, thank you. Not near London at all.
Who said Nice is near London?
does she have a recent video?at her age now?
did she crash land on a return trip from the moon in that spacesuit?
And she looked better in 77 when it was released
Lol a excellent castrato! Hear him sing this as he's gotten older, he has a really deep voice now!
😂
If I were Me , I'd have been Me!
From the German television show Sprockets.
“Come along, mein Sprockets! Let’s dance!”
i love the song but not the attire
FYI: The name of the city is spelled "Nice".
Oui.
Great song, bizarre costuming even by 80's standards.
To quote a man walking by a forgotten university;
INCREDIBLE.
shes pretty hott!!
People who do not know Jesus seek happines and never find it.
Nice song
You know, now that you mention it, even though it's been decades since I saw that movie, I can picture her wearing those pants. I can't recall the top however, you may be right about that too. Maybe it would be better to say I just don't like the "look".
Marimil is right....didn't u hear the part about "unborn children to make my life complete"....she uses that as an example. Maybe you should listen again. Song interpreter you're not.
what are women not supposed to see i wonder
David Cameron's tax returns.
+John , JEEZ, you are hilariously correct on that. Kings, hmm,...probably there in the Middle East.... pervs.
Things like books and educational material. 😁
Quote:
Oh, I've been to Niece and the Isle of Greece ......
If you're going to quote a song, at least learn how to spell. It's NICE, In EUROPE, NEAR LONDON. Crazy yanks...
Vida que segue...
Taguatinga-DF, 30/12/2017 às 18h33
mmm, she can be the mother of Tiffany :-)) Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh This song is stil awesome.
This must be the most unflattering peace of clothing ever worn by a woman .
this should be the theme song of women who dont have children.... kasi hinde kumpleto ang pagiging babae mo unless dika makaranas ng panganganak...:" I've been to paradise but I've never been to me" just read beyond and between the lines you'll see the true meaning of this song, the real essence of a woman is to bore a child to make you complate....
So your advice to a woman married to a man who turned out to be sterile is that she should divorce him?
The Spirit of the Lord's Lady Searching!..."but I've Never Been to Me!"
beautiful..like carpenters..love u charlene
give back their memories...😄 😄 😄
be true to yourself,an easy thing, and what its all about.
What a song? So so beautiful written and sang
This is one of those songs that can easily melt hearts. But is there any new song in 2013 that can have the same effect anymore? I can only mostly feel the opposite when listen to or watch the new trend of music (Miley, Gaga, etc...)
Now they seem almost tame since WAP and others have appeared. 😬
What year is this video footage? DId not like this song in 1982 but love it now.
1982
OMG- its nice to know that she hired a blind person to make that costume , we all love the song , but the toilet seat cover she is wearing is a tad much
+ImaSpooky,..... U are too funny... luv it.
It's Isles of Greece.
Also reminds me of the 'T' in Harlot being silent.
I suspect this track would be banned or Bowdlerised by the NeoCons
Neoconservatives love this song.
não esqueço essa musica eu tinha 13 anos
Was this a live performance? I can see it was live. wow, she sound exactly same in the record.
No, she’s lip syncing. 😊
U R so oooooooo Swwwwwwwweeeeeeet ....
i'd like the song very nive
Beautiful voice!!!!
I agree with you Steve
Charlene or mary
thanks for the info.....
This song defines my life perfectly. I'm a discontented mother and a regimented wife
+Andrea Everson Unless you're in a verbally or physical abusive relationship or he is cheating on you, then I would highly encourage you to work it out with your husband. Talk it out, it's worth it, trust me!
You need outside help. I never understood the conceit of this song that the discontented mother and regimented wife was in a better position than a woman who had "moved like Harlow through Monte Carlo" and "been undressed by kings". That seemed a small price to pay for the joys of being woken up every hours of the morning by whining children and being bullied by a tin-pot tyrant husband. You have to decide where you are on the scale and where you want to go from here.
nice this song
linda musica
Love song
Linda canção.
galing!
Boa d +
