  • Charlene - I've never been to me 1982
Hey lady, you lady, cursing at your life
You're a discontented mother and a regimented wife
I've no doubt you dream about the things you'll never do
But, I wish someone had talked to me
Like I wanna talk to you
Oh, I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
I took the hand of a preacher man and we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces because I had to be free
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me
Please lady, please lady, don't just walk away
'Cause I have this need to tell you why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of a weary heart that has lived million lies
Oh, I've been to Nice and the isles of Greece
while I've sipped champagne on a yacht
I've moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo
and showed 'em what I've got
I've been undressed by kings and I've seen some things
that a woman ain't supposed to see
I've been to paradise, but I've never been to me
Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children
that might have made me complete
But I took the sweet life, I never knew
I'd be bitter from the sweet
I've spent my life exploring the subtle whoring
that costs too much to be free
Hey lady I've been to paradise,
But I've never been to me

When I first heard this as a tween, I completely missed that it was meant as a cautionary tale. Instead, it saw it as a "to do" list. I mean, what are these things that "a woman ain't s'posed to see"?! That sounds like a dare! Guess what, I've been to paradise, AND I've also been to me. Maybe you can't have it all, but you sure can have quite a lot. (*I've yet to be undressed by kings, but I'm working on it...)

@@seeburg220if you're a grown adult man who still believes in talking snakes and donkeys and burning bushes that give commands, and putting all the animals on the planet in a boat and ghosts and angels and demons and skywizards and invisible friends who walk on water and turn it into wine and raise the dead then your adult and man card both should be revoked because there is no god or Christ or Jesus. The Bible is fiction.

    • @Rusty3659
      @Rusty3659 9 років тому +2

chamboyette853 Obviously they had no clue that this song was originally written from the male standpoint. They lyrics were completely different - but with the same idea. The songwriter thought that the song would sound better coming from the female perspective, so the lyrics were rewritten to fit a female. I've been the token male in several Feminist Studies classes which I've thoroughly enjoyed and I really don't understand why there was a problem with the song. Unless it was the first version with the spoken word.

chamboyette853 There's a version on here by the great Howard Keel with the original lyric from the male standpoint. I'm not sure where the spoken word version is on here or nor. This one here is the one that was re-cut and re-released after Mary McGregor had a hit with it as the follow up to Torn Between Two Lovers. I'll look and see if I can find you some links.

According to Charlene the song was written for her in mind in the 1970s but the details in the lyrics were just artistic license. I'm sure overall it's a poetic take on a wealthy, unmarried, childless middle-aged+ woman (spinster) who's been through it all in life but will likely die completely alone with no one to inherit her colorful legacy...

You need outside help. I never understood the conceit of this song that the discontented mother and regimented wife was in a better position than a woman who had "moved like Harlow through Monte Carlo" and "been undressed by kings". That seemed a small price to pay for the joys of being woken up every hours of the morning by whining children and being bullied by a tin-pot tyrant husband. You have to decide where you are on the scale and where you want to go from here.
