- Note: Click "Show More" for lyrics, and see my UA-cam Channel for an HD version of this song that also includes the spoken bridge in the middle that is missing from this version. This seems to be a polarizing song, people either love it or hate it. I expect a lot of thumbs up and thumbs down on this one :)
From Wiki:
Charlene Marilynn D'Angelo (born June 1, 1950, Hollywood, California) is an American R&B singer best known as Charlene. She is known for her 1982 popular song "I've Never Been to Me", and is considered a one-hit-wonder. Charlene originally recorded "I've Never Been to Me" in 1976, and the single reached #97 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in 1977. When released again in 1982, the single reached #3 in the United States (US), and #1 by June 1982, in the UK Singles Chart. The song has been her only Top 40 hit.
In 1982, Tampa, Florida disc jockey Scott Shannon, then at WRBQ, started playing the song at the behest of a girlfriend, by which time Charlene had lost her recording contract, moved to England and was working in a sweetshop in Ilford, London. Audience reaction was impressive, resulting in the song's second release with the original spoken bridge. The second release was a hit in England as well.
When the song was first released in the US in 1976, Charlene's legal name was Charlene Duncan from her marriage to record producer Larry Duncan; by the time the song was released in 1982, her name was Charlene Oliver by her subsequent marriage to Englishman Jeff Oliver. The single reached the top of the US pop and adult contemporary charts that year, and the concurrent release of her album I've Never Been to Me, was also relatively successful. The single was one of the year's biggest hits, and the video for the song was filmed at Blickling Hall, Norfolk, England and Charlene wore the wedding dress that she got married in.
"I've Never Been to Me" was featured as the opening song to the 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. The song is mimed onstage by two Sydney drag queens at the Imperial Hotel in Erskineville, Sydney, Australia. The latter performance includes a scene where a plastic "baby doll" (actually a rubber chicken) is hurled into the audience by one of the performing drag queens.
Lyrics:
I've Never Been To Me (R. Miller / K. Hirsch - Motown Records, Inc)
Hey lady, you lady
Cursing at your life
You're a discontented mother
And a regimented wife
I 've no doubt
You dream about the things you never do
But I wish someone had talked to me like I wanna talk to you
Oh, I've been to Georgia and California and anywhere I could run
Took the hand of a preacher man
And we made love in the sun
But I ran out of places and friendly faces
Because I had to be free
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...
Please lady please lady
Don't just walk away
Cause I have this need to tell you
Why I'm all alone today
I can see so much of me still living in your eyes
Won't you share a part of a weary heart that has lived a million lives
Oh, I've been to Nice and the isle of Greece
When I sipped champagne on a yacht
I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo
And showed them what I've got
I've been undressed by kings
And I've seen some things that a woman ain't s'pose to see
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...
Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie
A fantasy we created about people and places as we like them to be
But you know what truth is?
it's that little baby you're holding
And it's that man you fought with this morning
The same one you are gonna make love to tonight
That's truth, that's love
Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children
That might have made me complete
But I, I took the sweet life
I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I spent my life exploring
The subtle whoring
That costs too much to be free
Hey lady I've been to paradise
But I've never been to me...
I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...
I danced to this at my wedding
My Husband picked me up and danced me round the room well everyone took pictures of us .I have lost him now but we were together for 42 lovely years.
It's so nice that you have such special memories of your wedding night. In 42 years I'm sure you made many more xx
He's still with you. Just talk to him....and he'll hear.
Ha ha wedding song we have a winner lol
❤
God bless you
This song saved my life. I was in an abusive relationship. Beaten every day. I played this song all the time and listened to the words. It gave me the strength to walk away from the relationship and seek out the life that this lady had lived. It is a song that is very dear to my heart.
Dear robin am retired po god bless you

+Robin g Good on you for taking control of your life, now your life is what you want it to be, do what you want, go where you want, never fear anyone again.you're a stronger person now. good luck x
+Robin g I am pleased it worked for you, but it's making me want to puke!
+Minute Man Always someone like you there to shit on a positive comment... Why don't you lie down on your back and listen, so, when you do puke- well, I'm sure you can figure it out.
This was me in my 20's, doing whatever I wanted to do, living by my own rules. Queen of the ball, life of the party. There is a very heavy price to pay when you live in such a shallow place. Praise God for His mercy, grace, love, compassion. I am so blessed with a loving husband, three children, and six grandchildren. Is my life "glamorous"? Probably not but I wouldn't trade the budgeting for tournaments for soccer, baseball, cheerleading, basketball for all the European trips and cruises in the world. Paradise is being at peace with the Lord and all of His riches including our families. 🙏
YOLO
Praise God for bounce back to the more clearer and peaceful

I'm listening in 2024 and still stunned with the message 😉

She screwed Kings 👑
This was my mother's favourite song. A young girl with 4 children by 29 who she loved dearly.... She sacrificed a lot, yet just as she had began her journey to 'me' she was sadly taken.... I used to hear her sing this song in the house, but being a child it was insignificant, and she appeared old and ancient back then. I'm now the age my mother was when she passed, and I listen back to this song and it's lyrics with a truly different mind. It is nostalgic and sadly tragic at the same time, but I promised my mother that I would embrace my life and remain humble and honest, grateful and live life to the fullest..... I wish she was hear to enjoy that place that she sang about all those years ago, and one day got to get to go to 'me' ❤
Wow ❤❤❤❤xxxx😢.

I'm so so sorry. Thank you do much for sharing this beautiful song about your mum. God Bless 🙏🕊

Wow, I teared up for your mother's sake; I know exactly how she felt. What a beautiful acknowledgment of her dreams from your side. I'm sure she's proud of you.

Back in the day when the lyrics of the songs like this linger in our hearts forever.
Guys, this is music. Live singing, clear n beautiful voices, 0% scantily clad, just pure music with an angelic voice.
And we’ll done UK for taking it to number one where it belonged.
Wow! I hadn't heard this song in years. Glad I found it this evening. Will listen to it many more times...

Me too. I love this song. It opens my heart.
Indonesia
Im still travelling oout of my country I feel what this song it is
My mother sings like how she sings, almost the same.
I remember when I was a child, she always sing songs like these and I always clung to her and will look at me and to my father every time she would sing the line "I've been to paradise". I always thought until now that the next line is "and I wil never mean to leave."
But now she only sings it for me and my 2 sister. My father died when I was only 8 years old and my sister had just turned 1 and my mother was also 4 months pregnant that time.
Now she is a overseas Filipino worker in Syria. Bravely raising me and my siblings alone.
I've never been sweet to her now unlike when I was young but, I am really blessed to have a mother like her. I really really am.
Now that father's day is coming near. I wish my father in heaven to be happy and also to my mother who also has been a father to us since 2008. I love you ma.
I'll make sure that in the near future, I will be a successful man that will carry-on Papa's dream for us. Just wait a little longer, I always hold onto that one thing.
My mam used to sing this too
Woa man, that's dope
Yeap you will do it !!!!💪💪💪💪👍👍👍
Thank you guuuuys! I don't know who you are but, I'll remember this for my entire life.
Your mom must have a very difficult life. 💗💗
She sings a song of all of her regrets in life. We can all learn from her words.
I remember when this song was released. Melancholic, lyrics beautifully sung with excellent arrangements. Evokes many memories of life.
The Captain's regrets
yes darlinks
The lyrics, the tune, the voice... I swear, this song is perfect.
Brilliant I remember it just couldn't say who sung it.🥰
The song was written specifically for her.
Agreed
This song was a great gift from the god. The voice, the lyric was awsome.
Hmmm.......
One of the most beautiful and unforgettable songs I have heard. It brought back so many sweet and bitter memories throughout my life's journey so far.
She should have had many more hits she has a beautiful voice
Amen
Her voice is AWFUL and has been since 2000.
It aint easy coming down .Another beautiful song by Charlene Duncan
She has a duet with Stevie Wonder, Used to Be. I wonder why this song was voted one of the worst songs of all time in a poll conducted by CNN.
This was her message from Souce.
I remember hearing this as a kid, really got to me and I've never forgotten it.
Beautifully sung
Haunting !! I my listen to it 20+ times a day!
Yeah...it was my paternal aunt's favourite song back when I was 12/13 :'-)
Same here love it ever since
The singer of this song was my boyfriend for 4 and a 1/2 yes do you have the purpose for this song which I can't reveal. Use your imagination I said boyfriend after 30 years of marriage my husband passed away his wife passed away we both had 2 children we both had grandchildperiod but things aren't always the way they seemed. Whatever the reason was we were the best companion to the whole wide world and the love we shared together he said he never experienced before period again oil is not what it seems to be but he said listen to the words of this song it's my life. So different people have different reasons for loving this song but it's the song on my cell phone it's beautiful, It's wonderful. One of poor language best Written songs. Frank Sinatra executed it beautifully. And my boyfriend saying it great just take a look at him and figure it out. Hes one of the best unfortunately he passed away it'll before years March 15th

It's Jan 18, 2021 MLK day and I'm listening.
This song is not just a song, with it's lyrics and how majestically it's sung it's a work of ART!
I was 16 years old when I first heard this song. And as I approached 58 years old, with tears running down my cheeks.
I realize now I’ve never been to me….
I lived a life full of frolicking and superficiality, and those days are now far gone and only live in mind’s memories…..
In the Philippines radio stations still play this music everyday not many times a day but at least there are still radio stations that play it at least once or twice each day or night . It was simply because many Filipinos love this kind of melodies. Just sharing thanks...
I just meet Charlene today. She is absolutely amazing and humble.
Definitely was a honor!!😊

😔 😢 ...What a song. Hopefully many young girls, ladies and women will hear this song👍
My Mom had a hard life -
Seen some things and been through some things no one should ever have to. I’m 52 today and it still makes me uncomfortable. Maybe because I remember my mom crying everytime this was on. Now she’s in poor health as am I hopefully one day we will all be in paradise.
Stay strong and keep making memories together… best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪
52 and still feeling uncomfortable? Come on! I am going on 55 in this 2024! (This photo didn't show but this is true, though I am not so comfortable to show you my HK ID card.) 😅
I love the depth of honesty and authenticity of this song. We are always being everything else but our true selves
Ask me how I know you're gay
Anthony, don't listen to people who haven't earned the right to be listened to. I, too, love the song and arrangement and I'm pretty sure I'm not gay. So what if I was?? Beutiful music is just that, beautiful.
Nope Eli May, I'm just being my true self. I'm sure Anthony would approve.
When this song came out I was dating a beautiful, blonde Irish chick from the Bronx who was a devout Catholic. On our 2nd this song came on WABC and I turned it up. She looked at me askance, "You don't like this crap, do ya?" "Yea," I replied. "I hope you only like the tune and not those ignorant words, otherwise I don't hold much hope for this relationship." I found out later that the lyrics that were nettling her morality were at 2:20: "I been cryin' for unborn children that might have made me complete, but I took the sweet life," hahahahaahah And also, "I spent my life exploring the subtle whoring,"
Beautiful, blonde but catholic and prudish. You two could not have married. There are people who judge people on lyrics like this and people who don't. Your ex-girl-friend was definitely in the first category. I think you have not quite decided,
I was eight years old when I first heard this song in 1982 and they would play it on the radio everyday. Loved the music and melody and when I was old enough to understand the meaning it became even more powerful. A true classic!
The lyrics are so profound. I love this song.
I first heard this song in 1982 when I was going through one of the hardest times... it got me through and to this day when I hear it, it takes me back and touches me. That's the power of music. I'll slays be grateful for Charlene and this song
At least she's been to paradise, most of us have not. No regrets

This is one of the most deeply moving songs I've ever heard.
The first song I danced to with the man I later went on to marry in 1986. Still together now (2022)! This is a very special song to me!❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for your music
Thank God that I met this song! I’m totally related to the discontent mother and regimented wife....(being a mother of two boys for 10 years)
I’ve been thinking of running away. Wanna start my life all over again and pursue my real happiness.... But now I know what true love is! The lyrics are so touching and make me think what real happiness is! I’ve realized actually it’s just because I’ve been taking care of these three men but myself. After I communicated with my hubby and let him know I need some my own time. I’ve also shared my chores with my boys and it went well! Now that I’m listening to this song again, I’m so thankful that I didn’t make some stupid choices 😜!
Thank God!! I'm on the other side of the story! I've been to Paradise but am alone at 44!! You missed nothing!
When I was 28 I thought of running away from home, my husband, and our two daughters. Life seemed so stifling compared to “my plan.” I stayed, we had another daughter, my husband was the love of my life. I had an amazing career while raising my family. One day I realized I was living MY life that I needed, not the fantasy life that I thought I wanted. My husband died from cancer after 35 years of marriage; I was devastated and if it were not for my 3 adult daughters I would be utterly lost.
At 67, I am beginning to travel and realize I found ME when I was 22 and married; 25, 27, and 29 when I had daughters. This is just a bonus on the top of my life because I found me so long ago.
❤️🤗
Faye honey, I love you. God bless you.
@@eileenhavern77 Oh, dear. I just read it.
Thanks for your comments.
I actually had an another episode.
My marriage still didn't go well after all the efforts that I had put in, which didn't really echo to my comments above.
So, I decided to have legal separation. I just needed to survive!
It's been exactly 1 yr now.
I've had myself a wonderful yet exciting journey. Thank God I didn't meet "bad" guys😅
It's funny that after I took a serious decision, he got shocked and started to work on his anxiety issue.
Now he's really improving and begging me to give him another chance.
I told him I'm not interested in any relationship at this moment. I felt I'm in control after my journey. I'm more aware of setting up boundaries!!
Just wanna focus on my 2 sons and enjoy my motherhood.
And I think I'm happy again!
Easily one the most touching songs I've ever heard.

YOU ARE FOINE!
Why do I feel that singers in the last few decades before 2000 are so talented n amazing? They seem to be able to sing live so well n effortlessly n most importantly soulfully. Singing with soul is really hard to find these days...
I love this song when I heard it in the 90s from a compilation album. Only found this live 2 decades later, I don't think I have heard anything better than this! really very well sung!
You are so right....
80s was the decade....
music.ua-cam.com/video/4FmjBUNvD74/v-deo.html&feature=share
America in the 70s, in particular, was a fleeting meritocracy for the arts, when bullshit was hard to swallow following a bad war and superficiality could take a backseat to talent. 80s had its merits but by their end all turned to bad business. Eventually, you lose a sophisticated audience and can sell garbage, hence the 90s and later. In the end, there's no need to invest time and money in fostering when you can sell a low-grade product. I imagine playing today's music to us back then. I suppose they'd ask, "what happened!"

For its time....yeah. I was only a kid when this song came out but I can tell it was probably highly controversial

I was so moved the first time I heard this song. All I can think of are those women who are force into selling their body and souls to survive or to be able to buy everything that they want..
I may not be one of them but I always get emotional and cry whenever i sing this song..I feel her pain and regrets..how she enjoy life to the fullest being with the rich and famous ,sex and abortions, then later on she realized everything was a lie,she was not truly happy and regreted all her actions.how she wished someone had talk to her
out of it.
I applaud whoever wrote this song. Its so relatable especially now that we all are so into material things that we tend to ignore what really matters most__our family and lovedones
Fucking gross.

sweetie, you are too judgmental to others' life. A lot of peeps cherished their colourful past life too just in case you don't know bec you never been to.
The message is pretty clear, the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence and when men and women get a clue, it might be too late for them. a relationship takes work and sometimes neither party want to work at it. My grandparents were married over 80 years and my grand mother was hit and she hit back and she was a true inspiration to me in my life and my parents were married 57 years another inspiration.
Listened to this during my college days (70s - 80s). Still listening to this now 06 February '23. One of my favorite singers, Charlene Duncan . . . - from Lanao del Norte, Mindanao, Philippines.

+Patrick Ritchie Well, unfortunately this is the mantra of too many women in the USA. The difference is that this singer acknowledges her shortcomings. Nowadays they just transfer from young and greedy to cougars. I'm not sure which is worse.
+Bill Browne You nailed it. I don't know which is either. Maybe it depends on if the cougars have money. Life is a balancing act. Depends on what side of the seesaw we want to sit on. Live on. You're better off without her..... and I don't even know who she is. Just been there.

It’s so amazing how much time music composers spend to complete a song in the 70’s and 80’$. They wrote stories ❤. Songs today are composed of two lines sung repeatedly for three to four minutes to complete an album. 😮

Wow. What a difference. About a year ago, I was on here to listen to this song and everyone was ripping it, completely insulting the words, the message and the singer. I remember it coming out and it was so beautiful, both the message and the tune. Glad there are some others who enjoy it also.
I came here two years ago and saw the same thing. The lesson I learned was....you really can brainwash the next generation if you hold your breath long enough. It's a selfish shit-bucket song. Alway was, always will be and time don't change nothing.
Why do more people say good things about it today- because people are more selfish than ever.
Me, me, me.
What did people find wrong with this song?
@@BIG_AL_ONE to me, this song will always be a cautionary tale. Read the lyrics again and you'll see that she alludes to the whole "grass is greener on the other side of the fence" at the beginning but then changes tune when she gets a dose of reality.
@Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa you said that much better than I could have. This is a song about the price of selfishness.

I heard this song when i was 5 years old back in 1985. I've never been after many years one of my favorite song after many years..
The re-release, with the spoken bridge added, pulled this up out of the run-of-the-mill and made it a classic.
I have not heard this song in many, many years. I love it!
Hello Karen
How are you doing today?
Im crying right now this song is for me and my mother... I can relate to this song... When I live our of the country far away from my mom everytime I hear this song I remember her... My mom is still alive. I love her so much she may not be perfect but she's great in so many ways. Still listening May 10, 2020 @9:56pm . Thank You for this song 😥🙏🏽🧡
Oh holy fuck !
i was like 2 when this was on the radio, but "i've been to paradise (but i've never been to me)" has been my tag line on all social media for probably 20 years.
How could old generation sing a song just like talking and sing at the same time? (Dunno how to explain😂) Still love to listen this kinda golden melody.
It's only now I understand this song and the meaning of it. I married a great guy when I was 23. But I wanted more than the day to day, work, and weekends out in the pub. I left, and as this song says I've seen things and experienced things a woman isn't supposed to see. If I could go back I would in a heartbeat.
If there had to be one song that I could listen to for the rest of my life - it would be this!
Wonderful
@@robertlunam6008 same here -- lots of good advice are you willing to give up your autonomy for a life in paradise?
Beautiful, simply beautiful. Way, way, way before auto-tune ruined music.
One of the most personal unique and inspiring songs ever! ❤
Amazing song composed ! Such lyrics are rare these days ! 43 years on !
This song is a jewel with many facets!
I love this song. The first time i saw the singer now in april 2023. I heard this song when i was in my 6th grade back in 1980. My first kid love😄. Now i am 56 years 😅.. Thanks for posting this. 🙏
When we are happy we listen to the music but when we are sad we understand the lyrics ❤
It speaks volumes
Singers like these don't exist anymore. So much respect for their craft and they cared about being in tune instead of depending on autotune to do all the singing.
Adithi Rao They exist. Florence and the Machine. Neko Case. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. They’re out there. It just takes some digging. Just like this one- they don’t play it on the radio much any more. I don’t think the populist radio likes truly profound messages. These days this would be an anti-feminist anthem- she would be accused of slut shaming herself
Like Britney spears...
First of all Hip Hop for me is a bad influence. This is music this generation.
Rogelio Maza
Amen Rogelio!

Very true
This song never ages, always been one of my favourites since it first release , then as a song from Prisicilla Queen of the Desert great choice for the film. Beautiful voice from a beautiful singer
I just a little kid riding a public transportation ( jeep ) when i 1st hear this song and i saw a woman crying while listening, since im just a kid and not good in English, so after i went home i look for a copy of the lyrics ( song hits )
This really got a message and that woman i saw she might really feel it
This is my mother's favorite song. I miss her.
