Moenga Roa' R. I. P or Eternal Rest Renee. Ka aroha hoki' With deepest sympathy, Our Antipidean Queen of Soul will forever remain in the hearts and minds of all those who were fortunate enough to witness your vocal artistry. For many Aussie's and Kiwi's who grew up with your music, especially Maori, you are and will always be part of our whakapapa (genealogy). Kua hinga he totara i te wao nui a Tane. A totara is a huge native tree that grows for hundreds of years in New Zealand. For one of them to fall is a great tragedy. This proverb is said when someone of importance passes away. Just as we value our great trees, we must value our great leaders. For Māori, the Totara is a very special tree, brought into being by Tane Mahuta, the atua (Ancestor/God) of the forest. Symbolically, viewed as representing everything that roots us, anchors us, identifies us and locates us in the Māori world.
Vale Renee Geyer. Only ever a couple of times in a generation is one blessed with such a soulful singing voice. My favourite female vocalist of all time. I was fortunate to see Renee in concert many times since the 80s and had the honour of meeting her on a few occasions......talk about a big personality, unforgettable and the life of the party. Thanks for providing a significant part of the soundtrack to my youth

Still is, and not just with Maori's as I am a pahkea and we grew up with this song and my family and adopted Maori sister and my siblings married Maori's, it's still a huge family track. We love it 🥰
Used to love this record in the 70's by the Majors. Used to be played in a few London Clubs. Never thought it could be bettered. I hadn't heard of this girl before, but she's accomplished it. What a soulful voice. Excellent post. Thanks.
Terry, I spent a year in NZ living/working with the Maori people...most beautiful country/people on the earth...now I have 90% of my fave song list are NZ...beautiful singers, non materialistic and suffered the same cultural abuses as we did.....Kia kaha
@@johnpayne7729 Your comment I can't see how it connects with what Terry said. He used to hear this played in the clubs in London back in the 70's by a group called the Majors. He hasn't said anything about NZ or Maori people.

Brings back the good old memories going to the with the gat a crate and the Bros to the parties and singing this song and trying to pick the beautiful young Waihine that were there :)
To be more specific she's Australian. I used to listen to this lady as early as the mid 70s during the days when vinyl records & cassette recorders ruled.
To be even more specific, she's Jewish Australian. Not being biased because it's my hometown but all the best Australian soul singers come out of Melbourne ;-)
awesome... When she went to US many many years ago to record some music, DJ's playing her music never told anyone she was a white girl for fear of being rejected? I think those days are over now.
just stumbled across Renee Geyer singing this song watching "what becomes of the broken hearted" last night - blown away!!! I thought it was Gladys Knight and Donny Hathaway when I first heard it.
