Castlevania is hard like the first time you run through it, but when you learn more about the game is gets easier. Knowing about the holy water adds a layer of challenge too, cause now the challenge is "How can I keep the holy water". Cv3 is really good too
I find it similar to dark souls in that regard. Both become a lot easier after the first time, having learned enemy patterns and the powerful tools the game gives you.

This video brought back so many memories! Castlevania has such an iconic atmosphere and killer soundtrack. I love how you highlighted the challenging gameplay and rich lore. It’s a timeless classic that never gets old! Would love to see more about the series!
Nabbed the Classic Castlevania collection since Epic was giving it away for free and wanted to test your advice out. Honestly pretty spot on! Stage 5 was an absolute bloodbath because I could not for the life of me get to Death with the Holy Water but honestly aside from that it was pretty smooth sailing. Just wanted to say thanks! And still waiting for the Adventures of Bayou Billy.
That's awesome to hear I was able to help you out! If you know how to hold onto the Holy Water, then nothing will stop you in this game. Level 5 is the true test you are right and you're welcome! Ahh yes that is game I'm gonna try out sometime in the future not anytime soon unfortunately, my schedule is backed up compared to when I made this video so still sorting stuff out.
Stage 4 really is the difficulty spike. I can do the first three stages hitless, but if I hesitate for a moment with the moving platforms, I'm cooked. Stage 5 I find actually easier than 4. Nice Vod!
@@Skelthane ya know I thought this was the cv3 video lol. Only real hard part is frankstein’s monster without holy water other than that if you’re quick enough no bat will spawn on that first moving platform.
Not terribly often but I have beaten it. Stage 4 is really annoying with the bats and of course I did it whip only once Death is still a pain. It’s fun once in a while if I want a change
So cool this video, very entertaining, good footage, nice edits, awesome memes, and a lot of Holy Waters! That Spongebob moment vampire killed me jajajajajajaja
Tip for the boss of level 1, instead of using axes, use the stop watch when he charges at you (if you sit by the door, it's rlly good) and like either mash whip or hold a turbo button. You can kill it in 1 time stop if you're precise enough
Thanks so much! I appreciate it. I guess I played this game enough times to know how to completely run through it(not a speed runner but I still beat it quick enough I feel)
Here's some other pieces of wisdom I have gathered from playing. If you want you can use the stopwatch from the merman path to make the first two stages easier since it works on the first two bosses, make sure to get rid of it after the first two stages though since it's mostly useless after that. In stage 3 the mummies have a funny bug where they take devastating amounts of damage while overlapping. In stage 4 the bats always spawn from the side of the screen Simon is facing, so you can ride the platforms facing left to have the bats harmlessly spawn from the left, meaning you don't have to bum rush the platforms the second the stage starts. In stage 5 the axe knights and regular skeletons don't like being looked at, meaning they run away from you if you're facing them and run towards you if you're looking away, use this to your advantage when dealing with them. For stage 6 if you lose your holy water you can wait on the platform just before the second bat, most of the time he'll only move up slightly letting you get past safely and get the stop watch. From there the stopwatch trivializes the rest of the stage. For Dracula just be patient, stand still and wait until he starts to flicker back in as it is very easy to accidentally bump into him if you keep moving around, this also makes him spawning on top of you easier to avoid since it gives you more time to react to where he's going to appear. For his fireballs wait until he fires and THEN jump since otherwise he'll aim up and catch you. For his second phase you can safely walk through him (and other enemies in the game) while he's stunned with the holy water. You can also walk underneath him during his big jumps, his pattern if memory serves is two little jumps and a big jump.
Agree barring needing stopwatch early on. I just use axe on the bat then get holy water from level 2 go from there but also the thing with the bats I tried that in the third game it seems to work and sometimes not work so I have to do more testing or I might be changing direction too early
@@Imgoodurbadd If it helps the way I always did it for stage 4 was to wait at the very start of the level for the first bat to spawn, deal with it, and then go to the platform and face left. I think the trick MIGHT also work with the medusa heads in the infamous stage 5 hallway if memory serves correct. I might do some further investigation as to if the trick works on other screens where enemies spawn from the edges of the screen.
It's weird because most people say Mega Man 1 is one of the hardest NES games, but I can beat a majority of the game up until the Mega Man doppelganger boss fight and Dr. Wily, and then at that point I use save states. With Castlevania 1, I can't get past Frankenstein, and then Death is even worse.
I agree. There’s a reason I come back to it time and time again and I rank it as the 2nd best(cv3 my goat). Set the foundation beautifully for Classicvania

@@Imgoodurbadd thanks for the message, Im already 40 and im not as good or patient as I was when playing these retro games. Keep sharing good videos bro, appreciate the the hard work
It took a lot of years, but I eventually managed to run the game deathless along with Vs. Castlevania. I agree with keeping the holy water except for the first part of block 6, aka stage 16, where the giant bats hang out. At that part, I switch to the stopwatch and save myself taking a great deal of damage. Also, if you don’t have the holy water, the axe also works well on the axe knights, as they bypass the shield and hit the knight itself. Two blows with the axe takes out an axe knight.
Yes I do swap for the stop watch as well. The start of level 6 with the two bats is difficult but holy water or axe can help you stop the bat that comes from down below(congrats on the deathless run!)
1:17-1:20 Infernax has a "Wall Chicken" reference to Castlevania, BUT there is a catch. The player isn't supposed to pick it up and eat it. Infernax punishes the player with an instant Game Over... and Food Poisoning.
On some occasions they can but pertaining to their candle locations it is always the same. I pointed out specific candles for the holy water and other weapons
3 was my first NES castlevania. I forget where I left off but I remember it being towards the end. However 1, I swear I beat death and just never played the final stage, or actually got to Dracula and didn’t have holy water. It’s wild when I see videos like this explaining strats and I’ve been using a majority of them for quite a while. But everything is mushed together cause I would switch between CV1 and 3 and Ninja gaiden 1 and 2. I just knew I could fly through the game up until a certain point.
Honestly you don’t need holy water for Dracula he’s nowhere as bad as death without holy water. You just need to duck in drac’s 2nd form so he jumps higher. Drac’s only hard because random teleport into you and only 4 hits
Wow thanks so much for checking it out! It’s a totally different style but I like doing live comms. Adds the element of talking while playing the game instead of post. (Btw double check the tease from my castlevania part 2 video hehe
Import the Famicom version, and play on Easy mode. Makes a difference, right? The Famicom version only has Easy and Normal as possible difficulty levels, so once you compete it on Easy, try playing on Normal. Can you master the game?
It’s absolutely amazing how many different ways there is to beat the game(if you account for the 2nd quest.) I can’t even recall the number on how many times I’ve beaten the game it’s gotta be in the triple digits honestly
You are absolutely correct man, I've heard too much praise about Heart of Fire, while Wicked Child is left to the duat and almost never gets remixes, official and otherwise! >:(
Yes! At least in my opinion wicked child is fantastic.(I can’t remember if it ever comes back or is in a metroidvania I’ve never played before.) something about wicked child does it for me. I like heart of fire
The NES game is actually fair alright. Castlevania Chronicles is the true Castlevania 1 for manly man . This game doesnt screw around , especially the unecessary damage-scaling of the enemies .
@@Imgoodurbadd I think its worth it . The Soundtrack alone is great on different versions and it has some vastly different levels that are visually awesome . Hope you cover it in one video , bro .
It took me legit 13 hours to beat Castlevania in 1 sitting, and 6 of those hours were spent on level five, 5 were spent on Dracula specifically cuz it took me forever to learn his pattern And the last hour was the other parts of the game lmao
In a way it’s like megaman 1, people tend to overcomplicate its difficulty a lot. Megaman 1 is hard but more frustrating than impossible(i beat the whole game without save states)
Yeah mega man 1 isn’t that bad. Yellow devil and the clone can be beaten without cheese strats. The hardest part probably is the final 4 bosses plus wily 1 and 2 but I’ve done it deathless before
@@Imgoodurbadd funny thing is yellow devil is my favorite boss in that game. The other bosses are kinda shallow. I think the worst fight is probably flame man
@SirBiscuitman flame man it’s nearly impossible to beat him without losing half your health but yeah after yellow devil shows himself you can see what parts fly off so idk why people think he’s so hard
I definitely plan on it, but I’ll keep it a surprise for when it’s coming out:) (I also really appreciate the kind words. I just love these old games and love doing this)
Yeah Death was the barrier stopping me from doing until I finally figured it out. Believe me once you get past him Dracula is way easier.(good luck if you ever reattempt!)
Now try beating the MSX2 version! ;) It's a whoooole different ballgame! IMHO, easier than the NES version, but in most other people's opinions, much more difficult, due mostly to there being no continues and no extra lives beyond the 2 you start with. Also, the sub-weapons all work completely differently (daggers, crosses, and axes replace your whip as your primary weapon, while holy water and the hourglass -- not a stopwatch! -- can be collected simultaneously alongside your primary weapon), candles sometimes contain monsters or harmful items, keys are required to open the doors between each section (and to open treasure chests containing additional powerups), and there are merchants scattered throughout the levels that sell you sub-weapons and items, many of which are unique to the MSX2 version (like the two different types of shields, speed and jump enhancements, a candle for seeing where hidden items are, a map for checking your surroundings, etc.). You don't know Castlevania 1 till you've played and beaten the MSX2 version!
Yes I have seen gameplay. Maybe someday when I get the free time I’ll give it a try! Definitely doesn’t sound like something i’ll like but I’ll give it a shot
@@Imgoodurbadd It's an acquired taste for sure, but 100% in my wheelhouse -- my favorite Castlevania game of all time is Simon's Quest, so the unique obtuseness and... frankly, player-hostile design of MSX2 Castlevania (there are so many puzzle sections in the game's decidedly nonlinear stages that deliberately try to mess with you!), combined with the sheer variety of secrets and obscure gameplay elements, makes it easily my second-favorite game in the entire series AFTER Simon's Quest. For those who feel Simon's Quest is a disgrace, though... MSX2 Castlevania probably isn't going to do much for you. ;)
@@Wyrdwad it’s looked interesting but again I don’t have much free time these days so I wanna try it. I knocked simon’s quest before even trying it. (Still not my favorite but it’s a decent game) I am a sucker for “difficult” games haha
Castlevania 1 is the perfect level of hard for me. It's definitely a challenge, but eventually very easily overcome once you know how to beat it. For me, there's some things in games that are hard even if you've done them before, but I love when you can play a game again and really _feel_ how much better you've gotten.
Love the profile pic btw. Yeah I’d only say the game starts to get hard(could argue level 3 but frankenstein’s monster without out holy water is a challenge). I love cv1 so much I’ll never get bored of it
Ah, the first Castlevania. The first NES game to truly impress young only having played Atari 2600 me, and also the first game that taught me that cheesing is okay considering the game it'self ain't going to show you any mercy.
I mean it's in the game so it's fair play but if you get really good then you can beat this game whip only. Death is really the only hard part of the challenge
Yeah but this is still harder. You have to work with whatever you have in the game meanwhile dark souls you can level up get higher stats, different weapons armor to help. I’m not discrediting dark souls I’ve beaten it so I know how it is
thumbs up, but dude, you sure are a Liar :P The Third one is way way way longer, but smoother if playing casual. Also it feels more rewarding, trying out Chars and different Routs. Sypha to play safe, Alucard for best skips and Grant for the Challenge. And the japanese Version has that awesome Sound, man, that cheers you up. But again, nice Video, kept me amused.
Well I’m here to tell you I did cover the third game(the American version) so if you liked this give that a watch. I appreciate the comment and glad I kept you amused!
Castlevania is tough, but it's difficulty is really middle of the road. A Castlevania that is insanely difficult is Haunted Castle. That game is just annoying.
The final boss is a kaizo fight. That's no fun. Aside from that, once you get holy water never get rid of it. It's the cheese item that makes this hard game bearable because it stun locks bosses.
If you keep moving then it’s hard for Dracula to get you but there are times he can teleport on top of you which is unavoidable sometimes. Yes even without holy water, I would say level 5 is the one that ensures the whole game can’t be easily cheesed with holy water.(not even useful on level 6 besides the final fight and we already know Death without holy water be like)
My advice for Ol' Drac is to be patient, so much of the fight's difficulty is reliant on you being impatient and moving around When he teleports, sit still until he starts to flicker back in, it helps to avoid accidentally bumping into him and makes it much easier to avoid him when he spawns on top of you. When he shoots his fireballs stand and wait for him to fire, THEN jump, that way he can't aim up and jump catch you. Second phase Drac is a much simpler matter, provided you're using the holy water. Use the holy water to stun him and then just jump and hit. Remember that enemies stunned by holy water can be safely walked through without getting hurt, use that to your advantage if he corners you. If you're doing it without the water then just remember his pattern is two little jumps and a big jump, try to go under him when he does the big jump.
The only reason Death was considered hard for so long was because that asshole could lag the NES. Fortunately, it's not an issue with later ports. That's if you dont do the cheese, of course.
Wouldn’t the fact we have to learn the patterns and game mechanics in order to overcome the challenge make it hard? I still enjoy these games regardless
Definitely. I prefer cv3 cause of more content and replay ability but this one is a classic. (If you ever want to switch it up play the 2nd quest on this game. Take only 4 hits on every level plus other things)
Whuh. You jump to hit 2nd form Drac's head? I always just stayed on the ground whippinh his crotch, and his health goes down just fine? Also funny edits
Thanks so much. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the video! As for drac’s 2nd form the holy water will damage him the whip only damages him in the head so juggle double holy water and whip in the head
resume, the game is easy playing if you play as a try hard and using any glitch. yeah i'm a god of destruction too in ocarina of time, the game im pass over 200 times. xD
I really hope this satire like my video is supposed to be lol. Even though I used holy water, I didn’t abuse any glitches just knowledge of holding on the holy water and trying to not like die
@@Imgoodurbadd just fooling arround. But games are more dificult before when everyone are newbe. Also the controlles hurt the figers after 2 hours (im taking to super nintendo n°1)
Unfortunately I’m kind of stubborn stuck with official oem authenticity. I mainly use ps4 controller these days comfy dpad for retro decent joy stick and I do have a retro brawler 64 n64 controller because og n64 controller is ass
Yeah... it was hard... before speedrunners... which a lot of your strats come from them. Yes, I can beat the game in under 20 mins... but that doesn't mean it isn't hard.
@@Imgoodurbadd I remember playing this game way back when I was about 10-11 and didn't know about the stun lock of Holy Water as well as critical hits... not to mention the damage skips. I was able to beat it due to the infinite continues and through watching speedruns got my time down. Damage skips and passing on candles is counter intuitive of gaming. Speedrunning changed all of that.

Wow thanks so much for checking it out! It’s a totally different style but I like doing live comms. Adds the element of talking while playing the game instead of post.
(Btw double check the tease from my castlevania part 2 video hehe
I thought i was better than you until you beat death whip only. Looking forward to 3
Haha. I kind of figured it out, but there’s some luck involved with his weapons movement. It really boils down to be aggressive against him
Import the Famicom version, and play on Easy mode. Makes a difference, right? The Famicom version only has Easy and Normal as possible difficulty levels, so once you compete it on Easy, try playing on Normal. Can you master the game?
I have beaten the trilogy Simon quest and dracula curse all ending I'd say dracula curse is Soo much they push the limitations
It’s absolutely amazing how many different ways there is to beat the game(if you account for the 2nd quest.) I can’t even recall the number on how many times I’ve beaten the game it’s gotta be in the triple digits honestly
@@Imgoodurbadd fr
You are absolutely correct man, I've heard too much praise about Heart of Fire, while Wicked Child is left to the duat and almost never gets remixes, official and otherwise! >:(
Yes! At least in my opinion wicked child is fantastic.(I can’t remember if it ever comes back or is in a metroidvania I’ve never played before.) something about wicked child does it for me. I like heart of fire
@@Imgoodurbadd It doesnt come back officially as far as I can tell, and I also like Heart of Fire, I like all the songs in the game :)
The Minibosses did a cover of it years ago.
The NES game is actually fair alright.
Castlevania Chronicles is the true Castlevania 1 for manly man . This game doesnt screw around , especially the unecessary damage-scaling of the enemies .
I haven’t gotten around to trying it. Maybe one day
@@Imgoodurbadd I think its worth it . The Soundtrack alone is great on different versions and it has some vastly different levels that are visually awesome .
Hope you cover it in one video , bro .
I don't know why youtube recommended me this, but damn I'm glad it did.
I’m glad it did too. Thanks so much for checking me out! Glad to hear you enjoyed
2:20 Simon gets impregnated by Medusa 😂
2nd commenter that said that haha
It took me legit 13 hours to beat Castlevania in 1 sitting, and 6 of those hours were spent on level five, 5 were spent on Dracula specifically cuz it took me forever to learn his pattern
And the last hour was the other parts of the game lmao
Well you eventually beat it! I can’t recall how long it took me but it was worth it
Leaving a comment for the algorithm.
W. Thank you so much! I appreciate it
In a way it’s like megaman 1, people tend to overcomplicate its difficulty a lot.
@@Imgoodurbadd it’s obviously your choice but a megaman 1 video would be awesome. Your channel is super underrated
I definitely plan on it, but I’ll keep it a surprise for when it’s coming out:) (I also really appreciate the kind words. I just love these old games and love doing this)
Whip Only challenge is hard. I only got to Death. Want to finish it sometime
Yeah Death was the barrier stopping me from doing until I finally figured it out. Believe me once you get past him Dracula is way easier.(good luck if you ever reattempt!)
Boomerang or holy water makes Death super easy
@@Imgoodurbadd I honestly never did do the holy water method. I spammed boomerangs, kept the sickle population controlled.
Boomerang is a viable backup option. Kind of ignored it cause I usually hold onto the holy water till the end
I’d die by the first enemy
Yeah that’s pretty true. Thanks for watching
It's like a Nintendo version of Dark Soul.
Yeah but this is still harder. You have to work with whatever you have in the game meanwhile dark souls you can level up get higher stats, different weapons armor to help. I’m not discrediting dark souls I’ve beaten it so I know how it is
Castlevania isn't hard it's just challenging.
Yeah that’s pretty true
1:14 JUUUUUMP and you never see them again
Yeah haha such weird enemies they never show up again
thumbs up, but dude, you sure are a Liar :P The Third one is way way way longer, but smoother if playing casual.
@@Imgoodurbadd well then, send me a Link please

10 minutes of "Bruh, it's so easy bruh, you can't even beat that bruh, just do this bruh"
Why yes. What’s stopping you from beating it haha
@@Imgoodurbadd ... Nothing?
Castlevania is tough, but it's difficulty is really middle of the road. A Castlevania that is insanely difficult is Haunted Castle. That game is just annoying.
Yeah I’ve tried haunted castle before. Whenever I get more free time I’d love to conquer it
The final boss is a kaizo fight.
Yeah practicing to beat him whip only was difficult but it was worth it in the end!
I can beat this in like 25 minutes. This game is easy compared to later titles like Rondo of Blood
Interesting
Old games are not hard. They just bank in the fact we have a lot of spare time to learn all the patterns by trial and error.
Wouldn’t the fact we have to learn the patterns and game mechanics in order to overcome the challenge make it hard? I still enjoy these games regardless
Simple game but a good one
Definitely. I prefer cv3 cause of more content and replay ability but this one is a classic. (If you ever want to switch it up play the 2nd quest on this game. Take only 4 hits on every level plus other things)
please do Mega Man...
Maybe I will :).

Yeah... it was hard... before speedrunners... which a lot of your strats come from them. Yes, I can beat the game in under 20 mins... but that doesn't mean it isn't hard.
I see
@@Imgoodurbadd I remember playing this game way back when I was about 10-11 and didn't know about the stun lock of Holy Water as well as critical hits... not to mention the damage skips. I was able to beat it due to the infinite continues and through watching speedruns got my time down. Damage skips and passing on candles is counter intuitive of gaming. Speedrunning changed all of that.
Hard? Go ahead buddy, play the original X68000 Castlevania game
