2022 WRX Transmission and Differential Oil Change

- Today we changing the transmission and differential fluid with Motul Gear 300 75w90.
Just a quick drive around the block to test and instantly noticed its smoother.
Better to change to a good fluid before an issue arises. I feel like most people change the fluid after a grind happens and they think changing the fluid to a high quality one will mask or resolve the issue.
Thanks for checking the video out!

Thanks for these videos. I plan on doing plenty of my own maintenance on my base model. My first 2 years have free maintenance but after that, I’ll b doing most of the work.
Please make sure to add a fail over jack under the car in case your quick jack fails. At the very least, add some tires underneath the car. I’d also consider providing people with the proper bolt torque specs.
Cant wait to see your tutorial
Nice I love how easy the intercooler comes off on these. My 07 Sti was a pain in the butt
New to the subaru fam, your videos are very helpful!
Another great video Joey, I need a set of those quick jacks now 🤣
This is extremely useful! Thanks for this.
Speaking of intercooler, when are we gonna get a screen for it!!!
Excellent info, thanks.
Just hit 3k miles on my car. Glad I watched this video! Going to drain OEM fluid and replace with the Motul before I install my Perrin turbo inlet hose, AEM CAI, ETS charge pipe & flash the ECU. Do you think I’d be good with 4L? Other information I’ve read said the tranny was full with only 3Q…. Also got some Mishimoto silicone radiator hoses as well.
Thanks!
Crocs crew represent!
Thanks!!
Interesting how Subaru changed the diff to have a cooling cover and side mounted drain/fill plugs. Thanks for the video!
I was surprised they changed the whole pumpkin cast to make this new one with the fill/drain on the side. The diff cooling fins are nice!
This is the VB R160. I was curious about it and was digging to find info online when I came across this video. My old Impreza had a VA that looks like any other r160 with the drain and fill on the cover. I think they had this same diff on a few models through the years like the Tribeca and older Outbacks, though currently they are just on the 6 speed Crosstrek and the WRX from what I can find. The fins on the cover are a nice touch.
wait a min.... you dont need a crush ring/gasket for the fill and drain plug on the rear diff??? im so surprised right now!!! my Tacoma has gaskets to seal it.
Do the aftermarket fog light bars turn off when you turn off all the lights?
Like when the DRL are off, so they turn off too?
I’ll definitely be doing this most likely this weekend how much oil did you put in the transmission
I put about 3.5. I just kept adding until it was full on the dip stick.
No new crush washers? Just checking....
Joey, did you coat your garage floor yourself?
Looks nice in white
Thanks!
If i have the rear on wheel ramps and it's at an angle(front is on the ground), will this cause an inaccurate fill?
I would think so… but pro tip: always measure what you take out, so then you know how much to put back in.
Better to use 75w80 in the transmission/front diff. It’s the preferred fluid listed in the owners manual. It says you can use 75w90 but it might affect drivability and fuel efficiency.
They have 75w90 for like all wrx models. They changed to a lighter 75w80 for fuel efficiently and same with the oil. All years were 5w30. Now they changed to a lighter/thinner 0w20... For gas mileage. As for me I like the added protection the slightly thicker gear oil or engine oil gives me with the trade off of about 1 MPG.
@@JoeyMontalto The manual says it’s for fuel efficiency and driveability
Nice video! Hey so does your wrx have front diff fluid or just the rear diff fluid? And did you use the same fluid for differential and transmission??
The WRX has a front and rear differential. For this wrx the front and rear use the same fluid.
Did you use same fluid for differential fluid and transmission fluid?
@@romank6594 yes for this car it's the same fluid
What fluid does it take ?
Rear specs 75w-90, transaxle specs 75w-80, 90 is 1.6x more viscous at operating temp and ~ 3.5x thicker in sub-freezing temps.. this is an appreciable difference, use Subaru Extra MT 75W-80 in the front and skip the heartache.
can you use this oil in the CVT ?
Diid you even check the dipstick?
Thank you for the video. I wished you had added the trans fluid without removing the intercooler so I could see. I know it's simple but I'd rather not remove it. Thanks!
It’s easier to just remove it. Just a few bolts on top. Super easy access
When I did this I just filled from underneath the car with the pump nozzle that screws on the oil jugs. To each his own.
I can’t find the front diff oil dipstick to refill it in the CVT premium /.-
Not sure where the automatic transmission drain and fills are
Hey did you find that 5 qts did not bring the oil level to the top dot on dipstick I saw another tech use a sixth qt to top it up????
I did not have to buy any extra to get to max fill dot.
@@JoeyMontalto 👍🏼
@@JoeyMontalto you used 4 quarts for transmission & 1 for the differential correct?
Great video once again, man.
Couple of questions:
1- Do the drain plugs need to be torqued to spec or just a snug fit?
2-Where’d you get the cool quick jacks? Link?
I snugged them tight. No drips or leaks. Torque spec is 38 ft-lbs I believe.
Quick jacks are new! Just picked them up to help film better under the car. It was a process to set them up but worth it
@@JoeyMontaltohow big is a compressor is needed? Or are the electric-hydraulic?
Just checking out these videos. Tahnk you for sharing them. I too own the wonderful FA24 , 2022 WRX premium model. HOPE TO WIN😊 the short shifter giveaway
did you replace the drain plug gasket or did you use the same one?
Since the car was so new I reused the drain plug washer. No leaks
Dude I would seriously put a wheel or a block or two under those wheels just for added safety. I know that is a well built lift with lockouts, but it never hurts to have backup.
Do you know how much the transmission is supposed to hold?
MT holds 3.5 qts, my '22 only drained 2.75 qts two times, make sure car is level to accurately refill
Did you notice any difference after changing the trans fluid?
I didn’t notice a difference. Still shifts smooth
Is it the same for 2022 wrx cvt?
The rear diff should be the same. The trans will be different
My 2020 wrx has the same differential as a 2022 ...😮
Yes, Same drivetrain as the 15+ wrx. I just received my sti 6 speed swap so I will be swapping the diff and trans on the channel!
how many quarts for the trans??
I used 4 and 1 for the diff
So both diff and trans is only 5 quarts between the 2?
Yes and I didn’t use it all. I added until the trans dip stick was full and you add until it comes out the rear.
Why was this done?
I wanted to replace the oem fluid with motul fluids. Better wear protection and additives geared towards performance
what about the FRONT??
Check dipstick level BEFORE draining front diff. Spec is 3.5 qt fill.. my '22 was right at Full mark but only drained 2.75 qts. With car off-level on 5% downslope, dipstick reads ~ 12 oz higher, so it's sensitive to the level too.
This is almost as bad as the German engineers. 3 bolts in this video and they are all different styles.
Got some weird comments in here lol.
A few weird ones haha
@@JoeyMontalto thank you for these videos Joey. So much appreciated! I ordered a Magnetite Gray '22 should be here August. They tossed in the 6 year 100k mile extended power train warranty but luckily I can still do my own maintenance without disturbing the warranty.
@@theaveragejoebody congrats on the new whip. The gray is nice! Yea there are alot of options for parts that won't effect your warranty. Everything I've installed so far does NOT effect the warranty.
