Transmission + Differential Fluid Change! | 2015-2021 Subaru WRX

- Just a little maintenance. At nearly 32k miles, I finally changed the transmission and differential fluids on my 2018 Subaru WRX. As mentioned in the manual, 75w-80 is the preferred gear oil for the transmission but this only comes in the large tubs. The manual also states that 75w-90 is fine to use but it may "decrease performance" by a small amount. I used 75w-90 Subaru Gear Oil on both the transmission and differential out of convenience. Don't let this fluid swap discourage you, it's a lot simpler than you think!

for 2020 wrx owners, Subaru changed both drug and fill plugs go on the rear diff. transmission into H10(drain) & 17mm(fill). fyi, both relocated from back side to passenger side.
Thanks!!! Was just staring at mine wondering what the hell?
noticed the other videos you commented this under as well, just wanna say its kind of you looking out for us🤘
Response to comment at 9:08. My husband recently died under a Subaru doing what he loved. His children and I found him. Using a jack and jack stands. Always have either some spare tire, wood or concrete blocks or something in place as a fail safe and always make sure your on level solid ground. No matter what always have some there never work under them when your alone.
Tia, I’m very sorry to hear that. If my comment offended you in anyway, I’d like to apologize as well. My wife refuses to let me work under the car if I’m alone as she is afraid for me. I’ll take your suggestions to heart. I’ll continue to have a back up in case the QuickJacks ever fail.
So sorry Tia that’s awful. I always make sure I’m 100% safe while under any vehicle. I’ll be especially sure to do so under my STI now. Hope you and the kids are doing well! @tiaharris3604
Poke a hole on the bottle to vent! It’ll pour faster. Thanks for the video!
Mind blown. Can’t believe I didn’t think of this! 😂. Thanks!
@@ronfromportland 🤣 Life hacks
Subbed right after I watched that fantastic content
Much appreciated, man! Thank you 🙏
Just so you know the Subaru manuals uses a GL 4/GL 5 hybrid. You will get excessive syncro wear and noise if you us a GL4 gear oil, GL5 is recommended when you can't find the Subaru trans fluid.
next time once you start filling the transmission you can poke a hole in the bottom of the bottle to create air flow to speed it up a bit
Yep, I should have done this for sure!
@ronfromportland realized after I said this multiple people had already said it
@@patrick-gc8ew Aw you’re good! It was basic science that I should have thought of 😂😂.
@ronfromportland appreciate the video tho dog! I'm gonna replace to fluid in my wrx this weekend using it as reference
@@patrick-gc8ew glad to help bro!!
Good stuff my dude, I'm gearing up to do mine as well once I hit 15k. I plan to use amsoil so I will see how that goes ! And the quick jacks are the truth!
Let me know how you like Amsoil for the transmission and diff fluid! I know I said I didn’t want to deal with other brands but curiosity is getting the best of me haha. Agree on the Quickjack. Made everything so much easier!
@@ronfromportland for sho!
Might be a reason why they only have the correct fluid in that huge ass tub. Will probably try a different brand for the exact reason you mentioned referring to the 75w-80.
Yup, heard a lot of good things with Motylgear 75w-80. Apparently it’s the best substitution for the factory oil.
Reminds me of my most expensive jackstand purchase ever, recently. USA Jack 6 ton jackstands.
interesting, my manual for my 2017 says both diff fluids are 75w90
That is fine too
My 2018 manual says the same thing.
Great video thanks for the content
Thanks for checking it out 🙏
i tried 75/90 in my trans and found it to heavy . put in motul 75/80 and found it was alot smoother
Where did you get the 75-80 from?
@@ronfromportland i bought it on line its not easy to find i am in australia
@@ozevox thanks for the info!
@@ronfromportland no worries hope it helps
I'm at 48900 2021 wrx haven't touch either diff or trans. Should I drain and change?
Definitely. Mine looked pretty dark at 32k miles.
Will do this weekend@@ronfromportland
Thank you bro. But how’s the front differential change ? Same as the rear one?
Thanks for checking out the video. What do you mean exactly? Like how to change it?
Front is shared with trans fluid. Only cvt you have to change front and trans separately.
Where did you get the pump ?

Is this a manual transmission?
@@tac2oo7 yes it is a manual
About to do this. What year is your WRX and is it a manual or cvt?
2018, manual
What year is your car, Subaru corp told me not to change my transmission oil that it will void the warranty. But I have 2021 Crosstrek and it's a seal transmission CVT it's a non-serversible transmission if it ever goes out got a lifetime warranty on it from Subaru. They told me if it ever fails that even the dealership cannot open up that plug it has to go back to the manufacturer and they'll send a brand new one out.
Mine is a 2018. Wow, that’s something I’ve never heard of before. I quickly googled it and that seems to be the case!
so... there is no drain and fill plugs for the CVT transmission?
I got a 17 forester and it has them.. not sure about 21 crosstrek.
And yes, there is a drain and fill plug for TR580 AND TR690 cvt. They all use a 8mm hex for both drain and fill plugs. Just make sure you do your research so you don't unscrew the wrong fill plug. I've seen sooooooo many times people just unscrew any old 8mm hex plug and sometimes, it's the wrong one and cannot be repaired without pulling the trans out. So make sure you find and mark your fill plug on your cvt. The drain plug is relatively unmistakable, but the fill plug can be tricky if you're unfamiliar with cvt trannys
Update to my last comment, so I stand corrected by another Subaru dealership, they told me to that I can drain and refill so I did do it at 40k I found out where the right fill plug was and did that correctly, so I use Amsoil And I did notice that it seem to drive better and smoother shifting even tho there no gears. But I will do it again at 80k
When filling your trans you couldve poked a hole in the bottom of the jug, wouldnt take nearly as long
Haha yup, wish I thought of this sooner. Thanks!
What lift is that?

Maybe you know this already, but if not: I suggest you check Josh Bader’s channel: Bader Built. He knows his sh.t about Subaru and you could find some useful info there, also concerning the right fluids to use and how often. You seem to struggle a little and there are better options. Good luck with your channel ! 👍
Yup, I’m a huge fan of Josh! Thank you for the suggestion! 🙏
you could have punch a hole on the oil container to fill out faster.
Yer gear oil looks black when draining. Dear Lord.. If u tune the car, change the trans and diff every 15k. Just like oil changes, modified engines every 2k. Never be cheap
Car’s tuned, I definitely should’ve have changed it way sooner.
Oh, snap... I'm at 42k ('19) and haven't done either...nor have I done the serp belt...guess I need to get on it 🛢️
Probably for the best!
