My first entry level boot are the thursday captain because of the low price and recommended by many. But when i try the Grant Stone Diesel. I never go back to thursday. I even gave away my 3 pairs of thursday to my co-workers so i can have space for my new pairs of grant stone.
I got a pair of Nicks Officers boot and I love them! They feel like tanks but don’t necessarily look like them all that much, especially since I got them in a C width. I highly recommend the 1964 brown leather, it’s very nice mid brown with a supple feel.
Good review because where some will dispute or disagree, you provide good reasoning for your choices. I have several on the list, so I can get where you are coming from. I was wondering if Grant Stone was going to make your list at all, but you describe them well. They and Parkhurst are very well constructed and offer great value.
I agree that the 310 is a bit random. At the time though I just wanted something a little different. I really like the 310 though even if it’s less popular
I have Oak Street Field Boot, Red Wing Iron Rangers, Grant Stone Diesels, and two pairs of Nick's boots: the Roberts in W&C veg tanned bridle leather and the Falcon in Horween CXL. They are all excellent but I like the Nicks Roberts the best, overall, although I do like those Grant Stones. I would like to get one last pair of boots with waxed fleshout leather and lug soles for hiking and I'm stuck between Nicks Urban Drifters and perhaps the Whites 350 Cruiser. I may include Truman in the mix because they seem to be decent boots and the price is right. I'll have to do a little more research. Thanks for the video!
Gotta ask if you’ve got a pair of White’s MP or CMP Sherman boots. I might be a touch biased, they’re my grail boots and I just bought a pair a few weeks ago 🤘🏼😎
Just bought the pair of Oak Street boots you feature in this video and they arrived with way too many issues. Scratches, abrasions and cuts/scars in the leather. Heal heights are different in each boot. The heal was over sanded to the point the stitching is frayed. On appear a great boot, but what they sent me should have never left the building in my opinion.
As someone with wider feet and has embraced the “barefoot” style shoes, this list would probably be inverted for me. Love it when shoes have very wide toe boxes and a more foot-shaped profile.
I took my Diesels on a weeklong vacation in Sequoia, I hiked 30 miles in them, no issues. And they cleaned up fine for date night. I have 20 pairs of boots and the Diesel gets a lot of time and deservedly so.
Grant Stone's boots are way tougher than people give them credit for, Dale from dalesleatherworks has some videos explaining some pretty rough hikes he's put his GS's through.
I like my AE Higgins Mill a lot but seems like most people aren’t as high on those anymore. I will say I wouldn’t pay full price but I got a factory second pair on Memorial Day weekend for 30% off for like $265 after tax and I think it’s well worth it
Their sales are great, as is their customer service… but I just couldn’t get a pair of Higgins Mill to work for me, due to a high/steep instep. I ended up with Parkhurst. They worked perfectly for me. Nice alternative to Higgins Mill for anybody with weird feet, like me.
A couple of people responded for you saying that you did not own a pair, so I am surprised you never got your hands on a pair of possibly the most iconic...White's MP Sherman. What gives?
Excellent video Bill... Straight to the point and love your opinions.....AND agree with you about the Grant Stones, have two pair and for the money, can't be touched as far as this old timer goes.... Fantastic value for money....! Wyatt and all the GS guys will love this video and it's well deserved...5 STARS as usual.... Greg
Nice ranking. So sad that it's so hard to get your hands on most of these boots for a reasonable price here in Germany. Since Redwings are easily available here, I'd like to know where you see the Blacksmith (3343)? Thanks!
My #1 is Wolverine 1000 mile. It's because it's the only service boots I own so obviously the ones I always wear. I'd like to try Trumans next. I'm not someone who goes out and buys 10 different pairs of boots though. LOL
What brand/style of jeans do you prefer with this style of boot? I feel like i'v got the boots down but I'm struggling to find jeans to compliment them with. I have been on the hunt for a dark blue pair that would go well with the Grant Stone boots
How would you compare the fit of the Parkhurst vs the Grant Stone? Parkhurst is the only service boot that has worked for my foot, which is normal-ish width, but sharp/steep instep. Have not tried Grant Stone.
I love Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots, but for the price I can't justify it. I splurged on a pair, and a week later scrapped the toe on a concrete step and it was permanently scuffed. No way to keep it looking gorgeous, or to get it back to where it was after you scuff the leather.
I guess I'm first. Well, so far is none that I would buy for one reason or another until the Captain, but we all know that's not a "true" work boot or whatever, and then I'm not familiar with Parkhurst but if they are more narrow, then maybe. Yes, I still think Truman is overall better for the money than many of the others from what I've seen so far, but I haven't tried to do anything rugged in them yet.
And, again, I haven't had any Viberg ones and I got that other pair of Grant Stone model that seemed great and not so generic, but haven't had a chance to sport them out yet, either.
And, as I've said, the Captain and the President don't look or fit exactly the same, so I preferred the Captain by default even though they were the same price and I liked the look of the other one better. And the Truman cost twice as much but hopefully worth it in the long run.
@@BootSpy I didn't get any of the waxy ones. Almost, but no, Someone asked me to do a similar countdown vid and I haven't been able to oblige because I still can't say which brand I like better yet. Cheers
I would not call Parkhursts more narrow. Parkhurst uses a combination last, that is more toward a D width in the heel, but more toward a E width at the toe box.
OSB was 9? I would say it’s better than the 1000 mile for sure. I would agree that GS’s is an awesome brand and they make an awesome boots. I started collecting gywed boots last year and I started with Thursday’s but then the beginning of this year I upgraded to Grant Stone and so far I have purchased 5 pairs of GS boots. I have 2 pairs of Diesel’s and 3 pairs of their Ottawa’s. I love them because their price is not outrageous and their construction and style is awesome. I never thought I would like plain toed boots but I ended up really liking the Diesel’s for the way they look looking down at them. I also have always wanted the Alden Tankers because they have the split toe so I ended up getting 3 pairs of the Ottawa’s because they look like the Tankers. I would add the Ottawa’s to this list but I don’t think he has them yet.
If he had tried Nicks Falcon, it would be in the top three. The Americana is too much boot compared to the rest. Regardless, putting Red Wing IR and Thursday Cap above it is inexcusable.
Nicks has a new Thurman last that’s supposed to have a wider toebox. Think they have a Robert in that last too. They have some more narrow versions too, think the packers have a pointier toebox if your into that.
Being a owner o both a GS diesel in waxy commander and an america a in #8CXL, I dont agree with you. The nicks are more of a casual/work boot while the GS is a true service boot, so in my opinion they dont belong on this list(the vibergs, IRs and trumans dont belong as well). The GS can go from casual to dressy but its not really a work/outdoor boot while the nicks can go from work/outdoor up to casul but they could never be dressy. And, for me, the nicks feel way more comfortable then the GS(also everybody's feet are different).Maybe the legendary stiffness of the BWF ruined the Nicks for you and made an already overbuild boot feel like cinder blocks.
@strengthandbulkfitness5586 The Americana is in the HNW last, not the 55. That being said, they still aren't a service boot. This list felt like a list of his favourite boots.

Recently got Viberg and Grant Stone… Grant Stone is way more comfortable and I’ll be sticking with them
Own two of the top 3. Grant Stone and Trumans both roc and form the majority of my collection. Superb build and great leathers on both.
Respect for making such a polarizing list cuz its just how you feel. Stay true to yourself!!
I Appreciate you brother!

I was wondering if Grant Stone was going to make your list at all, but you describe them well. They and Parkhurst are very well constructed and offer great value.
The Viberg boot you picked is a little random! The 2030 is the ultimate service boot, from them or any company.
I agree that the 310 is a bit random. At the time though I just wanted something a little different. I really like the 310 though even if it’s less popular
Good to see the Parkhurst on the list. Such a great last. And the Viberg 310 is badass! 😬
Id liked to have seen your ranking of the Whites MP
I have Oak Street Field Boot, Red Wing Iron Rangers, Grant Stone Diesels, and two pairs of Nick's boots: the Roberts in W&C veg tanned bridle leather and the Falcon in Horween CXL. Nice pinstripe overshirt. Where is it from?
What jacket are you wearing in this video? Good list, btw.
Have your ever tried AE Higgins Mill?
Better than 1000 mile and Thursdays in my opinion.
I have them and love them. Really comfortable and lightweight. Plus you can get them lightly used for $150-$250 depending on condition
No MP Sherman?
Good question.

AE has gone woke unfortunately and are catering to a different crowd.

Off topic, but what is that flannel you are wearing? Really like that!
If I was rich I'd get the John Lofgren M-43 Service Boots or the Sagara Boondockers tbh which are both great service boot picks
Oh yeah, I’ve been wanting to try those myself. One day

@Bootspy - would love to see you do a review of Schotts NYC Service Boot.
Same here. Can’t find any reviews online!
What is that Jacket?
Grant Stone? I bought a pair of the Brass boots with lug soles and the things are ridiculously heavy. are the diesels also tanks?
How much did Thursday pay?

Parkhurst vs Grant Stone Fit
Thank you very much for making that! I just stumbled across the short at random. BTW, I had no idea you could reply with a short!
What are the pants at 8:19? dig that look a lot
Surprised you didn't get the Parkhurst/Nicks collab boot.

"Ranking 9 service boots from worst to best."
Thursdays above Redwings above Nicks.
Literally backwards. Unreal
Good Lord, Thursday boots rated above Nick's? Thursday are the boot version of a pair of Sketchers.
Emotional damage
I get a lot of puss because of my sketchers
Did you have it playing on mute? He explained how the ranking system works AND how the fit of the Nick's just didn't jive for him.
Bc the guy is a paid shill obviously Thursday sucks balls compared to any of the PNW makers
Skechers are great.
Oak Street is my number one, but they are wide.
I don't even need to watch the video to know which boots won. You are clearly a Grant Stone guy :)

They Viberg looks silly/clownish
Oak Street, £650 in the UK? What a rip off!

I personally don't care for any cap toes.
