- Eleven-year-old Paisley Gardner, of Des Moines, Iowa, isn't your typical tween music fan. Her favorite singer isn't Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber or Harry Styles; it's Michael McDonald, a founder member of the 1970s rock band the Doobie Brothers. Correspondent Steve Hartman reports on how McDonald met his youngest fan.

This 11 year old has better taste in music than most adults! And she knows who Christopher Cross is! Her parents did good.
There's still hope.
She obviously fell down the Yacht Rock rabbit hole.

It may be old school music, but it’s GOLD. She has great taste indeed. Now, that’s good parenting. 👍🏼
"What a Fool Believes" is an excellent song!
Old is gold. Todays music is trash
I'd go with timeless music instead of old school.
its "G"OLD MUSIC!!!!!!
As a fellow Michael McDonald fan, this brought tears to my eyes. She knows talent when she hears it.
Me too
Refined taste indeed. It could even spin off into a Steely Dan thing as M.M. sings all the choruses on Peg.
I'm balling over here too! 😭😭
I cried too and I hardly know anything about his music.
Love this storyline!
This literally brought tears to my eyes. This precious young lady knows great music when she hears it!!
Me too!
I had such a crush in high school. Late 1970's.
She has great taste. I’ve loved the Doobie Bros. And Michael McDonald since I was 10 years old.
Yes, she does! One of the best male voices in contemporary music. And what they did for her was so sweet.
Me too
That online meeting, nice. And asking if Christopher Cross was his best friend, she really does know that Era. ❤ good taste
Indeed, I love the Doobie Bros as well, they don't make music like that anymore! I love how the internet has narrowed the gap between the younger and older generations, so that any generation can enjoy great music from any time period.
Me too, love them! My favorite era of music is the 60s-90s.
At 68 yrs old, I haven't cried in years, this brought tears to my eyes...what a great story and bless Michael McDonald...
This touched my heart as well. The fact that she has great taste in music and Michael McDonald took the time out to speak to his young fan made my heart melt even more. Music has that power to bring people together❤️
It's awesome to see kids her age loving the music we grew up on
Good music is sooo timeless ❤ 🥲
Okay good, I’m 33 and never heard of this guy and I’m wiping tears from my eyes lol. I always gets nervous that great bands will be discarded because it’s “old.” This made me so happy to see. ❤
I love watching music reaction videos on UA-cam. Search a group or song from back-in-the-day and type in the word reaction. You should get a plethora of results.
Incredible story. SO many kids let the trends dictate what they listen to, so when a little girl has the backbone to choose who she likes by herself, she's already one bright little girl. God bless her and her family.
Wow, I did not expect to tear up! She has an incredible music taste and amazing parents who support her. I hope that no one dims her light as she grows up because she seems like a sweet and intelligent girl.
I'm 48 years old, and I always thought that I was an oddball for liking the music that my parents listen to. It's cool to see that there is someone of her generation that appreciates some of this great music.
Same here! I listened to Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Cher, and Elton John because that was my mom's music. But now I'm glad that I was exposed to their music at a young age.
Same here... I think we are old souls or lost ones or born in the wrong era 😂
No…my son listened to my 1,000+ album collection and 200+ CD’s growing up and live the 60’s-80’s music! Of course, I had to listen to his Barney and Sesame Street stars.
I found MM through Warren G’s Regulate. The rap song that sampled his “I Keep Forgetting”. That and his infamous mentioned in the movie the “40 Year Old Virgin”. 😅
Awww..... That sounds just like me at 15/ 16 . I had a massive crush on a brilliant, kind of cute singer/ musician/ songwriter. Everybody , except my Best Friend, teased me about it. That hurt deeply .It was embarrassing . It still reverberates till this day. I'm not going to say who he is, hmm, let's just say P.S , I love you. I could ramble for days . BTW, you have super cute glasses. You seem like lovely, supportive parents. Later.
Not only for her but for Michael knowing his music means so much to someone from a younger generation. Great story!
So true! Old-school soft rock/R&B is a lost art, and it touches my heart to see that younger generations still appreciate this magical sound for what it is.
Kids like Paisley give me hope for the future of humanity! What a lovely little sweetheart...and with fantastic taste in music, too!!! Congrats on getting to meet your musical idol, Paisley!!!!
She and her parents seem like the best people ever! They’re an adorable family and she’s raised right! This is an awesome story!
What a sweet story for a sweet girl. She even dresses like a 70’s kid.
I had a dress almost exactly like the one that Paisley was wearing in the beginning of the segment 🙂
And her name is Paisley - that's pretty '70s!
She does seem like 70's would be her favorite genre.
@@meredithmauro 1970s is NOT a musical genre, it's an entire decade encompassing many genres like pop, disco, soul, rock n roll, punk rock, country, folk, and more!
That little girl simply knows what real music is! Love this story.😊
Just proves that his voice is really something special. He's so unique and it warms my heart that this little, old soul feels that uniqueness. How sweet.
Dude has one of the best voices in musical history....
Great pick kid.....
The doobie brothers with Michael are timeless....
Seventies soft rock is among my favorite music. Makes me cry to see her generation enjoy it.
This is so heartwarming. I cried tears of joy for her. What a great and beautiful story ❤
Me too 😭🥰😍🤩
agreed!
Me too!
This really meant a lot to me. Anytime I encounter young people who appreciate actual musicians, it's something special.
Adam McIntyre, a young UA-camr, was 18 when he first heard Bonnie Tyler and Dolly Parton and he absolutely loves both of them. I agree with you, it's so refreshing to see this generation enjoying music from the legends.
Aloha from Honolulu!
me too. My BF's son listens to the oldies too. I love it. Kids today just do not know what good music is now.
Kids today are swimming in a dreamscape of constant new and amazing music and musical talent from people across the globe is at an all time high
Good musicians……. I think you meant to say, but I hear you.l
@@nicholasdicienzo6150 most music nowadays is just noise. the lyrics hold little to no meaning. there isnt a soul left in the industry lol
LOVE this!!!! How she feels about Michael McDonald is how I feel about Luther Vandross! Magical voices!! I didn't get a chance to meet Luther, but I'm so happy she got to meet Michael M.!!!! 💕🥰
Me too 🙏💎💙
I saw this already yesterday...I just love her! Love her glasses, her clothing, her folks -- her cool vibe is the whole package! You will always love music, whether it lifts you up or breaks your heart. It will keep you real, little sister in music 🎶💖 Always go for the best seats in the house. You deserve nothing less. $7 is a score! Rock on!!!
Aww man. She is too pure, reminds me of when I fell in love with Phil Collins and Toto in middle school during the mid 2000s and none of my friends understood. So glad she got to meet Michael over Zoom, made me tear up 🥲
Bawled when the chat started and she started to cry. What a nice thing for him (and the reporter) to do, something she'll never forget. Been a McDonald fan since the 70s and so happy to see that some young people don't discount the "oldies." Some great music back there.
Music is a language that can only speak to your inner being, age could never be a factor. I’m so happy for her!❤️
As a 26 year old who only listens to 60s music… this had me sobbing
25 here but same! ❤
Do you love the spinners?
What are your favorites (from the 60s)?
@@melreslor2114 I love classic leslie gore
I don't want this to sound rude, but I just have to ask, why limit yourself to one decade? I love the 60s, too, but I can't bring myself personnally to write off so much music just because it came before or after.
My parents raised me on music that none of my friends listened to so I relate to this little girl in such a big way. What pure joy. She is precious. ❤
Same! Now I’ve got this amazingly strange eclectic taste. Love it!!
That little girl is going to find some AMAZING artists along the way.
Same with my kids and, I've taken them to many concerts as well! I love to read about younger people enjoying an older generations music, thank you!!
I've listened to an eclectic PBS station for decades that plays unique music and lots of world music from Africa, S. America, and Asia. My son grew up listening to it too, of course.
When he was a baby, and being fussy, I knew to pop in a CD of "The Gipsy Kings" and he'd be happy and dancing again right away. That band is from France but plays Spanish/Latino/Flamenco style music. It's music that makes you feel happy to be alive (IMO). He also loved a group from Bolivia that played the pan flute.
I developed a love for Nigerian jùjú music listening to that station. One doesn't need to understand lyrics to feel the joy and spirit of that music. Music can be a universal language if we let it be!
@@LazyIRanch I love the Gipsy Kings. Saw them live and it was amazing!! World music really is something!
@@mariafentis I would LOVE to hear them live! I had a chance to, but my (now ex) husband didn't let me buy tickets to see a "Mexican" group.
World music is like a gift one has to discover for themselves. For me, it helps bring us all together as brothers and sisters of one planet, truly a universal language.
In 1977, NASA launched spacecraft Voyager I and included a golden disk with recordings of earth sounds. 90-minutes of it is music, including both Eastern and Western classics and a variety of ethnic music. Kudos to those scientists who understand how important music is to understanding human culture!
I wonder what alien music sounds like? I'd probably like it! HA!
👽🎶👾
The man's got his own level of soul and it's a pretty cool thing to be able to identify with. I'm happy that this girl has not only found art she is passionate about, but that she got to meet the maker of that art, and he didn't disappoint. So many people have been let down by their heroes. That's a rare combination of good fortune in a crappy world. I'm so happy for her and although I don't identify with Michael McDonald's music too much, I have always respected and admired him as a musician and a person and I always will, even more so now.
I was fortunate to meet all the Doobie Brothers a few years ago. I was friends with Michael Hassock who was one of their drummers. He’s sadly passed away but these guys are the most down to earth people you’d ever want to meet. No big egos at all. I really enjoyed their company. Still rocking after all these years.
What a cool 11 year old. Great taste in musicians!
These stories are so heartwarming and inspiring! Thank you Steve Hartman for what you do. You definitely put a smile on my face with this one!
My children grew up on 70's music and then eventually found new bands to enjoy as well.
It's cool to see a new fan discover his music!
Support your favorite bands, buy a ticket and see them live! ❤
Awww bless her. She has a good heart and that’s why she connects to these classics so easily.
Michael Mcdonald is a class act always will be. Great voice, great musical talent.
What a story. When he appeared on the call, I was on the verge of tears myself. Congrats, little girl, you have great musical taste!
I'm 56 and was probably around her age when MM really hit the big time. I've been a huge fan ever since. Love seeing young folks appreciate music from that era. This gave me chills!! ❤
She definitely has a good heart and wonderful loving parents. She’s being raised right.
I fell in love with Michael McDonald’s voice when What a Fool Believes came out. I think she has impeccable taste in music. He is indeed a legend.
yup- she's in good company with Thundercat and Warren G!
Great song! Now its gonna be stuck in my head all day
Yeah when I first heard Takin' It To The Streets I was like, who IS that?! Sounds GOOD!
More young people need to give the classics a chance. Most kids won't even listen to anything "old". This baby girl has excellent taste. Good job Mom and Dad!
Actually there are a 2 young guys called Andy and Alex that review 60s, 70s, and 80s music. Their passing all the good stuff on. Pass along
kids listen to plenty of old stuff. seems like adults love to assume things
Sure they do. Kids these days LOVE the oldies: Nirvanna, Pearl Jam, Tool, NIN, etc.
How do you know what “most kids” won’t listen to? Exactly.
I'm 17 and I'm genuinely inspired to go out and try to help revive some kind of '90s (since the 1990s are fairly "in" right now) grunge/alternative rock thingy. I love the bands you listed!! :]
A girl that's not into modern music of today is really awesome. Her parents should be proud of their daughter liking old school music.
I bet when the CBS producers reached out to Michael's people and they asked him, he was probably tickled over the idea to surprise her. What a fantastic story. He helped create a memory that will absolutely last a lifetime.
Please introduce her to other 70's pop/rock singers who are still around so she'll continue to realize how good music was then! :)
Steely Dan 🥰
@@kellywalker9827 Yesssss. McDonald was a session backup singer on some SD tracks.
Neil Diamond.
Sounds as though she's already a fan of Christopher Cross, too!
James Taylor!!! ❤
I’m so proud of this young lady for appreciating REAL music and REAL musicians. She has wonderful taste! I hope she’ll learn to appreciate more 70s (and 80s) music. It really is the best music ever!
I agree!!! It sure is!
You know your grandparents didn’t think 70s or 80s music was “real” music either… let’s not be generation snobs
Your parents probably hated your music, too. I mean, the downfall of society in the 1970s and '80s was definitely because of the cracked-out kids and heavy metal, wasn't it?
This girl is wise beyond her years. Her parents must be proud.
My daughters are the same, they don't listen to the new stuff. They listen to Sinatra along side Deff Leopard and Olivia Newton John. These are the kids that will keep the music alive.
I've been a fan of the Doobie Brothers since the 70s when I was a teen. This is such a good feel good story.
I remember buying "Livin' On the Fault Line" when it first came out in '77 (as I recall) on 8 Track. Loved it then and still do to this day (now listen digitally, no more 8 Track, LOL)! I still enjoy their stuff.
Paisley's generation needs to expand their horizons to the music of the 1960s and 1970s because it is not coming back around again! And it is in a league of its own.
Paisley has great taste, this was so sweet. I remember hearing him as a young girl as well and I still love his music, music like his last for generations and will never get old.
I can totally see how she completely fell for that voice!! He has been my favorite for decades!
It's so heartwarming seeing a young person from today really appreciate legendary talent from the past.
@@patfrederick7327 Yes, it does! I was blessed with similar parents who didn't tell me what to think or love. I loved music from an early age, so they bought me a nice stereo, turntable, tape deck system and bought me records and tapes I wanted as gifts. In my late teens I discovered punk rock and New Wave. Not my parents' cuppa tea, so Dad gave me an excellent set of headphones.
I started sewing my own clothes when I was 12, and had a unique sense of style. I was very much into androgyny and loved David Bowie's style. I made a tuxedo inspired suit that was turquoise blue linen with pink satin lapels, pink satin pleated cummerbund, and a pearl bowtie. Someone said I looked like a gay Willy Wonka but I took that as a compliment. My parents never criticized my clothes and just said, "You're the one wearing it!". They also bought me all the fabric and supplies I wanted so I became pretty good at sewing. That was smart for them to do, because it kept me out of trouble and gave me a skill for life.
Mr Hartman, thank you so much for making this young lady’s dream come true. It was just a little thing, perhaps, but a Huge thing for her! You’re the best. I adore your stories. Congrats Paisley and enjoy your next concert!
That was beyond amazing he did that...
There is still hope left for this world. I wish more young people were like her.
Long Live Yacht Rock!!!! I love that the younger generation is showing appreciation for the smooth classics. They went from being considered cheesy to being recognized for the masterpieces of chord progressions and art they are.
Its honestly a disrespect to call these classics "yacht rock" because the musicianship on these songs are unparalleled
Mom and Dad of Paisley Garner!!! You're raising a daughter who has very good taste!!! This segment got me in the feels!! And I bet you are sooooo glad you got those tickets for her first concert too Dad!! And I am too... cuz this has turned out to be an experience that neither of you will ever forget.......talk about "daddy/daughter bonding" !!! You rocked this Dad (and mom too)!!!!
Love Michael Mcdonald ❤
That young lady has an artist’s soul.
Paisley knows great music and great musicians. I am 60 now and I have seen countless concerts of some great artists. Gotta tell you, the greatest concert I ever attended was at the Johnstown War Memorial in 1979 . . . . The Doobie Brothers. Michael McDonald front and center. So excited for you Paisley that you get to see his concert back stage. Enjoy!!!!
I laughed and cried! The joy this young woman felt from listening to great music was palpable! I melted when he greeted her with “hello darlin”! Steve Hartman did it again!
You cried, really?

Paisley’s such a cool girl, and I love that her parents support her interest. As a kid in the ‘70s/80s, I liked the Doobies, and “What a Fool Believes” still makes me teary, that longing. MM has a unique and unmistakable voice, but his lyrics are also soulful, real, timeless and true. They speak to the heart, no matter the age.💕
*Wait, tix were only $7… What year is this?😮
I'm thinking maybe on Stub Hub or Seat Geek. I became a fan of the Doobies with "Listen to the Music," way back in the day.
What a sweet story!! I just saw the Doobie Brothers in concert! Mike’s voice is like no other. I love this little girl! She’s got heart & soul!
Proves that you're never too young or cool to listen to older artists and their music...
I’m 23 years old and I love listen to old music like Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, and 50s music and the best of it is Classic Rock❤
The love of my life was Gene Kelly; born in 1912, me in 1958. I was 22 when he was in Xanadu and roller skated. I roller skated, so I thought, yep, he was always the guy for me. LOL. So, good for you Paisley. I saw Michael some years ago with my best friend and we danced in the aisle. Glad you got to see him.
I love that her parents support her music tastes!
This is what makes the world a better place
This is the best thing ever! 😆🥹 When she started crying I lost it. What a cute kid.

I'm 30 and even I knew about Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross and the Doobie Bros. -- and then some. It astounds me that Paisley - as young as she is - knew about Michael. Her reaction seeing he was actually that old TODAY made me laugh a little, but being the only little girl ecstatic enough to be at that concert? 😲
Yeah, you know she's broadening on great taste. It brings me inner jubilation to see younger generations actually take time to find entertainment from the decades, and NOT in just what's current. Good on you, Paisley! Stuff like timeless music are treasure troves. 😊
I love watching the music reaction videos, especially when it's young people.

I’m 32 but my favourite music is the rock music from before I was born. Doesn’t matter how old you are…if you like music that’s older then you then that’s that. Good taste kiddo.
Love ❤ Steve's segments, always happy tears here. This young lady is a gem, music is really timeless! Michael McDonald and Doobie fan here too, great music!
This story just had me grinning ear to ear. She's so sweet and quirky. I love that she's loves what she loves and her enthusiasm. I wish more kids, teens, and people in their 20s would step outside the mainstream zone and really jump into older music, whatever genre. There's so much out there and we live in an age where it's so easy to get access to it!
This was the most wholesome story I have seen in awhile. Reminds me of my kids in so many ways.
I've never been a fan of Michael McDonald but his music does bring back memories of simpler and often "better" times. He is undoubtedly a bonafide musical legend. Kudos to the girl for keeping an open mind. A lot of adults could learn a thing or two from her attitude, as could other kids of her own generation.
Keep this stories coming, Steve. You restore our faith in ALL you put forth.
None of todays singing stars can hold a candle to MM. I saw him in concert with Boz Scaggs. Fantastic.

Definitely an old soul what an awesome little girl with impeccable taste when she got to talk to Michael and she started crying that was so sweet and asking about Christopher Cross she is definitely a Yacht Rock kid!!
29 year old here. I grew up listening to music form the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. If it had a good sound or a story to tell, I was listening to it. My school mates thought I was weird when I started listening to stuff from the 20's, 30's ( love Robert Johnson's crossroad blues) but hey I look at it this way, the older I get, the more eclectic my playlist will be. Whilst others will be listening to the stuff on the radio nowadays.. Rock on, little miss!!!! Hope for the future!
Man. Love this child. She's neck-grinding side-to-side in the ride to What a Fool Believes. I was doing the same back in the day. Been listening to the Doobies since I was in middle school during the 1970s. Love that she feels that soul in his voice and is not obsessed with his age or looks.

Paisley, you're awesome! I love Michael, too and became a fan when I was your age, in 1980. I've seen him live in concert about 4 or 5 times (the recordings just don't do his voice proper justice) and he once shook my hand, which was a thrill for me, too! I hope you get that backstage experience and keep appreciating great musical talent!
I am jealous! All I got was a carnation thrown from him..I was a teenager and I remember it like yesterday..that voice...those blue eyes 👀 💙 🎶
We took my daughter to a Manilow Concert back in the 90s. She loves music. But Country is her style. But she fell madly in love with Manilow. She was a closet fan in High School. But still wanted to go with us to see him in concert. She is now 34 and just recently went to her 12 th concert in Savannah Georgia. If he is with in 4 hours from our home .She goes.
She understands great music! Refreshing to see some of the younger generation are getting it!
Paisley, I get you! I've been in love with him too since I was very young and now I'm 63. His voice hasn't changed nor has his lusciously thick hair (that used to be very dark). What a gentleman he is too- let me just say, I'm very jealous of you, you lucky duck!
