Mike commented when touring early 2000 that he couldn't believe he was still popular enough to do that and sustain a band joking that he thought he would be back on the airforce base where he had gigged as a teenager... if they would still have him. Such a quiet and humble guy, and this from the man who defined West Coast (and quite possibly global soft rock) music throughout the 80's along with Kenny, Hall & Oates, Toto and Ambrosia (David Pack). During 1980 to 1986, having helped to launch Christopher Cross (and after influencing Steely Dan and revitalising The Doobie Brothers to a new radio audience), he would quietly work for Qwest Records. Although not widely known this was significant - James Ingram's debut album and the smash hit Ya Mo Be There launched another career, George Benson's crossover debut album Give Me The Night (uncredited) brought the jazz great to popular attention, Donna Summer's iconic State of Independence, the fore runner to We Are The World (in the all star choir with Kenny, James Ingram and Christopher Cross) and Rod (Thriller) Temperton's hit Sweet Freedom for the movie Running Scared. Just a few highlights. Michael Jackson was in the all star choir and is on record as saying What A Fool Believes was a favourite. It is no surprise that Mike was working at Qwest when James Ingram re-wrote PYT for Thriller in 1982 - listen to the background vocals at .030 for the influence. Motown subsequently worked with him (after those London gigs in 2000 via Universal Music International) to release a covers album as a revival for their back catalogue. A few artistes had tried Motown covers before although Universal recognised that Mike had the love, St Louis gospel background and vocal chops to carry it off - not one artiste but many of them - Marvin, Smokey and Stevie included. Mike would comment that What's Goin' On and Songs In The Key Of Life were foremost in his desire to write songs after his early inspiration and love of Ray Charles crossover recordings. Mike insisted on including less well known tracks as well as 'hits' on the two albums and Tuesday Heartbreak is simply a beautiful, soulful take on a Stevie Wonder hidden gem. Thanks for sharing this experience with your upload.
His voice is fantastic.I live to heat him sing. When I first heard him on an interview, I was rather surprised to notice that his speaking voice is unlike his singing voice. On the other hand, Bill Medley and Teddy Pendergrass sounded the same when they sang and spoke. This is merely an observation, nothing more.
My mom used to work at a residential care facility called Hillside House back in the '80s. Michael and Kenny, with some local musicians - one of them a fantastic drummer and percussionist I played with, Rene Martinez - would all visit different facilities around Santa Barbara at Christmastime. Got to hear these guys live, unprocessed, unmic'ed, and it was as good as this is. Michael's voice - there's just nothing like it. Got a carpet for Michael's damper pedal because it was slipping away from him on the first song. They were genuinely nice people, and made so many people's day when they'd do their annual Christmas circuit and visit with them before heading off to the next stop. One of my all-time best concert experiences ever.
@@autumn1231 From: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_McDonald_(musician) McDonald has been married to singer Amy Holland since 1983. They have two children. He moved with his family to Santa Barbara, California, in the late 1990s, and has subsequently lived in Nashville, Tennessee.[41]
Kenny is a fantastic singer and musician and we all love him for his significant contributions to music all these years... but Michael McDonald is simply beyond this world!
I can’t believe how great Micheals voice still sounds. I loved him w The Doobie Bros and on his own. I remember when being a teen and him coming out w What a fool believes…. I was crazy about that song!!!
I don't know if anyone out there likes Hall and Oates. But I always wanted to hear Michael sing with Daryl Hall. It was amazing!!! They sound so soulful, their voices blended perfectly. And when it was Daryl Hall and John Oates singing with him it so beautiful. I wish they would record an album together ❤️
Me too!! This brings back a lot of fond memories. I played Minute By Minute on my 8 track until I wore the tape out!! Not all "greats", and I generally detest Geezer Tours. However, these two were always cool, somehow still are, have aged gracefully and still have the chops!
God, this is awesome. I love to sing songs "in the style of Michael McDonald" lol but hearing the man himself, do it like only he does it, gets me every time. There's only one Michael McDonald.
Oh my. The memories. Saw Loggins in a restaurant in SFO (Greens, Ft. Mason; doubt it’s there now) old hangout). Bittersweet. He loveed (or at least gave a very approving nod to) my sister’s sheet-straight, healthy, waist long, thick blond hair. She recently lost her battle to lung cancer. We were both diagnosed within one year. But I am, for some time to come, I hope, still here...remembering our many, many times together. McDonald is older. Loggins is older (dare I say we're old fogies now?!). We have all passed into that land of now being the elders, the wise(r) ones with the years of experience and the battle scars. We're the next generation to go; let's live it fully, and let us teach our younger ones well. It's been a crazy, beautiful ride. I can so easily recall her repeating, “So. Kenny Loggins likes my hair! Kenny Loggins likes my hair! Or “Kenny Loggins just *stared* at my hair!’ So. Kenny Loggins

Amen to that! 63 years young and still diggin' the sound of good keyboard playing. Makes me want to go back to playing the keys again. Peace out.
