Pickup trucks: America's favorite wheels

- Pickup trucks account for three of the industry's Top five bestselling vehicles this year. And they're not just popular in farm states; millennials are buying the most new trucks these days, many with no desire to haul anything more than a bag of groceries. Correspondent Lee Cowan looks at how the humble pickup is evolving, growing, and hauling in a new generation of fans.

My first truck was a 67 gmc single cab long bed, now I have an 11 and a 13 both reg cab long bed with 4wd and winches mounted in the bed so when I back up to my loading dock it easy to load. Bought a brand new Chevy Trail Boss two years ago . A 2020 with a ten speed transmission and a 6.2 small block engine . I didn’t buy it for fuel mileage. We work the truck pretty good with everything we use it for . Best truck I have ever owned . I am subscribed to Tim’s channel on U Tube and enjoy his review of the newest equipment out there. Where we live in Kansas and what we do , simply couldn’t do it all without a good truck . That was a fun piece on Sunday Morning. Nice to see pickups get their day in the sun .
i drove a pickup truck around the whole coast of south america, took me three years, slept in the truck, i crossed the amazon on mud roads ruts upto the fenders, drove over the andes, it was the best time of my life, ill always love the versatility and fun you can have with a pickup, nothing else comes close, and they look damn cool too
I can't deny it. As a young kid, seeing Charles Bronson bouncing around off-road in the movie "Mr. Majestyk" sold me on
pick-ups forever.
That plus the truck from the TV show “The Fall Guy” in the’80’s that Lee Majors drove, iconic.
Pickup trucks look great. With the cost of them these days, dealers should offer classes on how to park a pickup truck without taking up more than one parking spot.
I couldn't agree more! Pick up trucks are super easy to sell! Very popular here and in Australia!
This reminds me of my uncle who bought an Audi R8. I asked him if he took it to the track at all, and he laughed and said “I drive it fast on the road!” Yeah, in a straight line in the highway, that’s like keeping a German shepherd in a studio apartment.
I love my 2020 Ford Ranger Lariat. Perfect for my retirement life here in Oklahoma!
Ah yes, the old ones with a bench seat and a manual transmission, would put a smile on your face when slid behind the steering wheel.
Looking good Tim. I will forever be a truck guy. I bought a car once when I was 17 and a year later couldn’t take it anymore. Had to get a truck and have owned trucks ever since. I couldn’t do half of the things around my home etc without a truck, so I actually use my truck too.
Great segment. I enjoyed watching it. Cheers.

My truck is 20 years old and I still don't want to replace it. I earned the rust spots. I haul garden stuff all the time. I have space, with the 3rd door (but no back seats), for my dogs. It's small - I don't need a giant one because I am not working off-road. I wish they still sold the small Toyota, Mazda, or the S10, Sonoma. If you don't need the extras, and you get it anyway, you're compensating for something.

What I'm seeing alot of where I live is trucks with the front end up in the sky and it's tailgate dragging the ground. They call it the Carolina crawl, I think. I've almost been run down several times by those trucks. They should be illegal. They are very dangerous because you cannot see in front of the truck.

Kelley Blue Book and 60 Minutes have a video baby about pickup trucks. Yes!
And spend no less than 10 mins of any American accidents video and within five mins see at *least* one or more accidents involved in or caused by *pickup trucks* - not kidding
At the beginning of the video they say how pickups are the best selling vehicle by a ways, of course statistically they'll be in some wrecks
Buying a LUX fuel efficient car after 1996,
meant paying a Lux Tax of $2,500 to $6,000 dollars.
Same lux items are in a gas hog truck, and NO taxes on them. Go figure!
It's ridiculous how most of them will never end up off-road, or utilized in any useful way. 90% of them don't need a truck.

You should’t “feel” for them. They made the conscious decision to purchase such a luxury item. I’ll take an affordable, paid home over having to make monthly payments on any vehicle that costs the same as a house any day.
I love my f 150 his name is baby.
In all sincerity, I was fairly disappointed there was no mention of the Toyota pickup, (Tacoma).
Bc they are heavily marketed to consumers and not disincentivized like they are in other countries (ex larger motor= higher tax ). They are in the way and inefficient unless you use it for work
Inefficient? My big diesel truck went over 850 miles on one tank and often the commute to my office in dc I'd get 27 mpg. My new 4 runner gets 22 mpg much smaller and lighter. Great thing about this country, you can buy anything you like. From a silly Lil ev to a huge truck .
What the woman at 4:40 said captures exactly what the prevailing mindset is in U.S. culture. A culture of consumption - buying what one wants and not what one needs. There's a reason full size pick-ups only sell in the U.S. Most societies around the world consider them too gaudy and inefficient to be worth the cost. And in a global economy still at the mercy of oil prices, there's little left for the rest of the world to justify spending money on it.
Life isn't about existing at a subsistence level. Enjoy it while you live. If that means a pickup or a sports car or a motorcycle, so be it.

I'm keeping my eyes out for a pickup truck. But I want a truck, not a Lexus. I'm looking for an F150 or F250 pre-2010. With either the 5.4 V8 or 6.8 V10 gas. With a genuine 3 pedal manual transmission, and manual locking, manual transfer case 4 wheel drive. In quad cab, 8 foot bed, with nothing more than power windows and locks, cruise control, and air conditioning. Don't need or want leather. No moonroof. No navigation. These are the last of what I call analog trucks - few computers running everything, basic old-school port fuel injection with no direct inject or turbos, few sensors other than anti-lock brake wheel speed sensors, and yet somehow it still gets the job done as well as a brand new $75,000 F250 with heated and cooled leather and tri-zone climate control lol

More Americans should start embracing the ownership of a JDM kei truck for a change. With just the basic bare-bones features you need. Costs a hell of a lot less than today’s trucks these days.
Or better yet, start their own car company that only manufactures small vehicles like kei trucks in the USA. Maybe with electric swappable battery inserts
I swore up and down I would never by a Pick-up or SUV. I didn't see the need for them. But, I ended up in a car accident with my VW Jetta GLi and saw the 22 Tacoma. The VW Golf GTi I wanted would've taken 6 months to get because of the "shortages". I couldn't wait that long and I needed a truck for my house. While not the largest truck out there, it does what I need it to do. I still despise the SUV though.
the Tacoma isn't an SUV... and if you hate trucks/large vehicles, why didn't you get another sedan?
