Such a great run for AGDQ one of the most impressive runs I've seen on there and it's still cool to watch. That Launch Base 2 is godly even if HDL notes he made a small mistake his timing through the whole level is great that's some muscle memory at work! Also loved everyone on the couch during this and the Sonic 2 run there is a lot of game knowledge that is interesting to learn about on how and why things work.
+MxMoondoggie Thank you. The quality of effort it takes to do something like this is astounding and usually lost on people who think the game is nothing but walls, so I always appreciate when people enjoy my performances. LB2 especially since I think it's one of the toughest stages to execute on.
Great commentary! While I really enjoyed the play of the run itself, the constant stream of interesting information behind different tricks and mechanics really made the whole thing for me.
Really impressed by all these tricks in this speedrun! Sonic 2 and S&K3 are some of my favorite games of all times, and I never thought it could possibly be done like this, I jaw dropped a couple of times no kidding! Congratulations!
I love how you say the glitch at the end with the floor disappearing at the end of the platform during phase 1 of the final boss is rare. I swear I run into that issue over 50% of the time no joke.
+Finalflame We've actually looked into this bug a lot and no one fully understands it. It happens more often when coming from level select, but can also happen after defeating the previous boss. We think it has to do with the screen movement as you touch the right side and transition to the next boss, but nothing's confirmed.
I never understood how the hell people find these skips and glitches. I mean some of them are SO specific, how many times would you have to play the game to fall into one? The odds seem ridiculous. I do not get it..
Jaded Monk basically once someone decides to speed run a game they open it up in a certain program and T.A.S. it which is just the process of going through the game frame by frame, testing every surface in every possible way to see what happens when [x] happens until they've pretty much found every exploitable surface both useful and not so useful. it's as if the game were a vhs tape and you could just press pause every single frame and back up etc. every game with glitches like this has like 20x as many clips and things that just aren't useful in the slightest
PrincessRazz Plays This is pretty close to what happens. What happens is that when someone speedruns a game, there are people who TAS the game, and they're usually the ones who find all the glitches.
Jaded Monk In most game communities the people who TAS and the runners are different, with the runners receiving lots of help from the TASers. Sometimes there is overlap, and in fewer cases the runner is also the TASer. In any case, most things are found just by repeated experimentation. Having deep knowledge of a game significantly increases the likelihood of tricks being found. Lots of study/routing helps you develop strategies that are reasonable for humans in real time, and lots of consistency training ensures you're good at performing them.
Robert Miles I used a simple generalization I more than understand what actually happens but for all intents and purposes my explanation got the point across more than clearly enough for the recipiant of said info to then research more about the topic on their own. anyone with half a brain can type "Tool Assisted Speed running" into google
If I was a game designer I would absolutely NOT try to make my game glitchless. Nothing you’d find in normal gameplay, but something there for the runners
Then you'd be a terrible game developer. Programmers make the glitches, not the designers. If you know about it, it's not a glitch; by definition it's unintended behavior. Programmers who intentionally leave bugs in their software or otherwise don't strive to eliminate them are terrible programmers.
I wonder if someone will run S3&K this year at SGDQ. Really enjoyed your run,HDL,was the most impressive out of all the Sonic games runs at GDQ events.
It's always difficult at first to understand how to do a trick initiating it is often easier than executing it the amount of times I've botched stuff is hilarious but the people like HDL are veterans of hundreds of runs of these games perfecting their technique so they will always seem so hard to catch up to. Practice makes perfect as they say!
Congrats on being a gaming badass! :) Don't miss the opportunity that so many speed runners do - keep posting gameplay vids to UA-cam so you can unlock monetization and start getting paid to have fun.
+GamerGramps Thanks for the compliment. Regarding monetization, it's not really something I'm worried about. It would be nice to make money for showcasing performances like speed runs but I really only care about striving for the specific goals I want to meet, rather than put up loads of videos to increase viewership.
But imagine how much more you could achieve overall if you didn't have to work in between your gaming! :) That's the dream, anyway. Thanks for sharing your work.
+GamerGramps Out of curiosity I recently looked into this more and learned about the various gaming networks. I'm not sure if I want to go that route, but I'll do more research and see if anything comes of it.
Yeah, I'm not sure either. I was once approached by a network and they weren't clear about exactly what they wanted and what I would get as a benefit. Smelled like a trap. Tread carefully! :) Tip: You don't NEED a network to get started, if you've got cash to boost your views via advertisements.
Nice bro! This game looks really fun!Im gonna start playing sonic mega collection on my ps2 which i still own, load up this game and play with my little bro,oh the shitfest which is about to happen....
and one other thing-did anyone know fan-game,based on this, its called something like sonis sfx or something, its a very cool game, but i lost it a couple of years ago,and cant find anymore
Oh god I loved this game growing up and 100 percented it tons of times as a kid. I don't understand why people donated so much for Tails though, I find him to be the most boring character out of everyone. My favorite was always Knuckles and then Sonic, Tails was the last on my list but people tend to like the more well known characters or vote for the option no one likes lol. I really like the explanations to why screen wrapping happens and all of that because I've always wondered why those glitches occur in Sonic speedruns, but I'm a little sad there wasn't a 100 percent completion of getting all the Chaos and Hyper emeralds in this run. Would have been cool to see a different character since flying with Tails seems to make this game so easy and it'd be awesome to see the collection of all the emeralds.
Boring is subjective. I personally feel that, out of the 3, the Tails category is the most interesting. Flying does not make the run easy, if anything it makes it much harder because you have to account for the way it affects momentum (and how momentum affects it), making execution require more precision. In any case, glad you enjoyed the run. :)
The MegaMan X run has some glitches in it...they skip a boss in the re-fights. Speed running is about getting to the end as fast as possible and I for one find this entertaining. Glitchless runs are great, but I enjoy glitch runs just as much
I really don't understand the fun of breaking the games. I think if they did a Tony Hawk speedrun they'd not use any cool combos too, just find a way to glitch into the final credit screen. It's just boring and pointless. "Speedrun" assumes playing fast, not skipping. It's like winning a chess match in 3 seconds by knocking the opponent down with a chair.
So people who play games in this manner are brainless? I don't think you realize the amount of effort and creativity that goes into routing, studying, and executing a speed run. Please don't knock us or the result of our blood, sweat, and tears just because you think a game is supposed to be played in one way only or that what you find interesting is the definitive, interesting take on it. It takes a considerable amount of intelligence and dedication between various people for a game performance like this one to develop into what it is.
When i started watching speedrunning games i was thinking the same way like you. Then i was curious and tried to do all these tricks and my mind completetely changed because the level wraps, tricks and glitches are very cool if you know how to do it.
Donald Duck But not cool to watch. It's pointless skipping. The fastest way is to reprogram the game and make it show credits right after pressing start. It also takes skills at programming and is cool to be able to do. And is even shorter, 100% world record, not beatable. Sonic is perfect for picking a fast way to get through it, it's just a crime to give up on awesome speed tricks and go for complete outside-of-rules run. As I said, it can clearly be done faster using hacking so it doesn't even make sense in measuring time.
god the music is so good

+Donald Duck S3K runners tend to be big fans of those particular jumps. :)
Great commentary! While I really enjoyed the play of the run itself, the constant stream of interesting information behind different tricks and mechanics really made the whole thing for me.
Oh man, memories of the days i had to rent both cartridges and put those on top of each other.
What a brilliant move by Sega.
Really cool, i always like the explanations of the glitches and stuff. I really appreciate the runner and the TAS people.
Really impressed by all these tricks in this speedrun! Sonic 2 and S&K3 are some of my favorite games of all times, and I never thought it could possibly be done like this, I jaw dropped a couple of times no kidding! Congratulations!

Awesome seeing one of my first (and favorite) games being completely destroyed like this. Amazing run and the commentary was pretty interesting.
talented player, based theorie knowledge, sympathic guy
Still hoping to see an all emeralds run at a GDQ.
Ryusuta I know Right?
if you're still interested, The Sound Defense just did one for this year's sgdq. The vod is up on youtube now, it will blow your mind :)
thanks you ! you're my inspiration for speedrunning this fantastic game !
best platform game of all time, pure art and fun, I finished this game thousands of time

Beautiful. This game looks fun to run.

At LR2 you can actually do that box clip in MG2 as well
Run starts at 0:50
I have trouble doing slow sonic 1 tricks lol, watching this makes me want to cry :( Very nice all around

Could you please link to the "walking encyclopedia of Sonic 3 & Knuckles" guy?
You'll most likely find him on TASVideos, his name there is marzojr.
Can you do a Speed Run of "Sonic Generations" with all skills acquired? That would be sooooo awesome!!!!!
I may learn just the Carnival Night strat just so I don't ever have to play that awful level again. -.-;;
your wondering how i speedrun?
debug mode bruh
33:44 Geez... Tails completely destroyed that thing!
37:58 You are talking about the glitch that I got in my Walktrought. It actually kill me.
@ChadwykDoesStuff he has proper english
not you in the other hand
+HDL, did you ever laugh at carnival night zone 1 glitch? Because I ran out of breath laughing.
I don't know why it's a good boss fight if there is no music

Not bad. You're almost as good as those guys over at SpeedMarathonArchive.
What's your 6 tap spindash technique? Do you hold your thumb over all three buttons or use three fingers?
+Evan Parsons I use my thumb to piano the buttons.
Nice bro! This game looks really fun!Im gonna start playing sonic mega collection on my ps2 which i still own, load up this game and play with my little bro,oh the shitfest which is about to happen....
i wish these guys would do an HONEST speed run no glitches
thank you lol
@BigBlack just look up glitch less speedruns.
that was so optimal 8)

hi hdl. i have messaged you on twitch. my user on twitch is minzy42 i look forward hearing from you
I started S3K speed runs in 2011, but it's really more about the quality of effort than how long one does something.
who's the commentator in the middle?
are you playing on the original console or is it emulated
This was on console.
those kind of players
makes video games lose the fun - we're supposed to enjoy them, not win them fast
Sonic 3 is good, but short. Sonic and Knuckles is okay, but even shorter. The games are near perfect when combined.
I'm Shooketh.
Is this Tool-Assisted?
No, this was a run at a GDQ event. They're always performed live unless they specify it's a TASbot presentation.
@@AdrianTepez
oh okay
Gotta go fast.
the american is the most respectful speaker the other 2 are just plain rude over talking when Naegleria speaks
OH NO
It's so sad that AGDQ even allow glitching like this. The MegaMan X players don't do it and they do 100% completion speedruns to boot.
The MegaMan X run has some glitches in it...they skip a boss in the re-fights. Speed running is about getting to the end as fast as possible and I for one find this entertaining. Glitchless runs are great, but I enjoy glitch runs just as much
