Citizen’s quality is far above Seiko’s since ~2019ish. But I’d argue that Orient took the Seiko crown for affordable divers.
Citizen’s designs are still a liiiiittle too funky for me most of the time. Having said that, I have a few 😂

@@marcdaniels9079 so do I! But for example, I have a green citizen endeavor with a similar look to the one reviewed here. Got it as a gift! Loved it until I realized citizen didn’t attach a regular bracelet, and the lugs were a strange size. The watch requires a ~20mm (theirs is tapered from ~24) with a 14mm male or female cutout. This funkiness restricts 3rd (or even 1st party) band and bracelet swap outs! So not the FUN kind of FUNKY 😎

I know rich people who wouldn't spend more than the cost of an Apple Watch for a time piece.
It's that old adage that just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Spending thousands of dollars on a watch really isn't an intelligent decision financially.

My daily work watch is a Citizen Promaster NY0040 and despite owning lots of watches, it always makes it on holiday with me as my swimming watch too. It’s fantastic in every way. It was pretty much my first venture into mechanical watches and it will never be sold. I’ve never picked up another Citizen since, but that’s through no fault of Citizen’s.

Great review. I have been a Citizen watch collector in preference to Seiko. I recently got the Citizen Promaster Marine BJ7111-86L, and you might like the weight and GMT complication. The blue dial with the white 24-hour scale is very attractive. All the very best to you all, and thank you for your time and effort sharing this with us all. All the best, Sir.

I picked up the blue Citizen Fujitsubo aka “The Barnacle” a few months back, and I love it. It’s basically a higher end version of the watch you reviewed. It has a 40 MM diameter, made of full titanium, and has rectangle hour markers, so there are no pants or baby bottles on the dial. Also, it comes with a sapphire crystal. It has a Miyota 9000 series movement, so a bit of an upgrade there as well. You should check that one out!

The NY series Pro-masters are classics and probably one of the best watches Citizen has ever produced. I had the full lume version a few years back which got discontinued for a while. I made a significant profit on that watch when I sold it but always regretted letting it go. Thankfully they reissued it with the 8204 movement so I bought it again. The pants thing doesn't bother me in the slightest and mineral is arguably better on a diver. This is a proper tool watch with a great design that's aged very well.

I bought one of the black Fugus years ago to complement my SKX009 because I like the dial better than of the classic NY0040. As a Seiko-guy as well and owning a Promaster Eco-Drive (crown on the right side) I have to admit that my absolute favorite chronograph is the Citizen Brycen panda dial CA-7090-87A. An impressive Super-Titanium and saphire crystal thing that weighs near to nothing and looks absolutely incredible. Just like Seiko's Speedtimer but made from titanium and at half the price.

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming 10 місяців тому

It's tricky as years ago Citizen and Seiko were basically copies of each other and almost the same price. Then Seiko went for the up-market despite actual quality not really changing. Citizen - kind of stayed the same. Styling, yes, Seiko is obviously hiring better talent there. But as a watch? Not sure if Seiko is worth the extra money at this point if I just want a tool to tell time that's going to get dings and scratches from daily wear. My dress watch - yes, it's Swiss.. lol... but it's not my daily wearer, either.

My favorite watch is the Citizen Blue Angels World Chronograph A-T. My wife gave it to me for our 10-year anniversary... 10 years ago. All stainless, 200M WR, SAPPHIRE crystal, solar AND atomic. This watch has never let me down. Perfect time and the sapphire crystal has ZERO scratches after 10 years. This is a very tough watch. A few wear scratches on the band clasp, but I alternate with the blue leather band (the yellow underside is a great detail) that was also used for this watch. Just lovely and it makes me happy.

I was not impressed with Citizen until I got a Eco-Drive Promaster Diver this year. It avoids all the problems you found in the one you reviewed. Mine is steel, blue dial, date only, crown at 4:00, orange hour hand, no pants at 12 and an excellent rubber strap. I paid $123 for it - factory refurbished, it has been perfect. Citizen does solar really well. I've swam in the ocean with it and banged it up a few times, and it has not a scratch on it. Great watch.

If you like the Transformers, the Citizen Eco Drive BN0150 has kind of rhe Transflrners logo at 12 instead of the pants. It only has a date wheel, which makes it smaller, and being stainless steel it's more substantial. You can also get it on a metal bracelett with the ratchet diver's extension, which can be used for on the fly micro adjustment.

Oh man, I have the same model. I hope you like that bracelet/band, and never want to swap it out. Loved it until I realized the lugs were 14mm, and the band is tapered down to 20mm with a male or female 14mm cutout. This restricts 3rd (or even 1st party) band and bracelet changes.
On Tissot or Rolex models with cutouts, I’ve seen third party options, but outside of custom band makers the options are slim to none on the Endeavor. I plan on trimming a leather, FKM or other diver’s strap to fit.

My Citizen EcoDrive GMT fieldy/flieger is about 12yrs old. Mineral glass chipped slightly at the raised edge. In honesty for about $150 its hard to beat despite the poor lume 100m, never needed opening and the EcoDrive is incredible. It normally lived unworn for weeks or months in a daylight position (bed headboard) but got misplaced in a dark cupboard for months until dead... a couple of days in bright sunlight got it back from the grave and its a solid runner again. oh and the $150 EcoDrive my wife picked while her $1500 Ebel was getting a $150 service (its quartz too !) has pretty much displaced the Ebel.

If you're into Star Wars and you're OK with Eco Drive watches, I suggest taking a look at the Citizen Bespin. It's a limited edition watch and I think it looks great. Wish there were a mechanical or automatic version though.

I am a big fan of Citizen, titanium watches and green dials. Even good titanium bracelets tend to feel cheap, because of their lightness. But where Citizen drops the ball and loses me on this one is the 8000 series movement. I don't mind the spinning so much as they can be rattley
I have a 30 year old titanium solar watch the capacitor died, but the watch still looks great!
The titanium "scratches" are more like scuffs and are fairly easily removed I believe.

A lot of the lower end Japanese watches use improved titanium on the watch head but, (as indicated here) base titanium (which is less scratch resistant), on the straps.
Go higher end if you want the fancy scratch resistant coatings on the straps.

Citizen lume is great in my experience. Have no idea why it got just 7. Might not be as blazing bright as some, but my BN0200 was close enough to my Seiko monster, but it lasted longer and somehow charged better or more easily in dim/indirect lighting than even the Monster which is known to be one of the best lumed watches off all time afaik.

I'd agree with your thoughts on titanium. I've tried the material with a Seiko watch and sold it off. Just too light and I prefer the feel and look of stainless steel more. I was always on the fence about Citizen until I got the Pro Master (steel version). I have two. One blue dial and one black dial with green bezel. I love the legibility and the fact it looks really cool. I never saw the pair of pants until you mentioned it, now I can't unsee that. It is a strap monster with it being 20mm. Makes it also look a bit more retro than 22mm. I just wish they would have nixed the date window. It's small and I generally don't like it on watches anyway. It also should have sapphire. Other than that, I really like them and wear them often. It's a great everyday watch. I found them used for well under $200. The blue I got for $100. At that price I love it.

Nine years ago bought a Citizen Eco drive chronograph with a perpetual calendar housed in a titanium case and it has been a joy to own. It also has a GMT feature, incredible lume and an alarm. The only disappointment is the alarm, it’s so feeble there is no way it would wake anyone up of a morning. Apart from that a cracking watch.

Nice looking watch. Orange hour marker would finish it off lovely. With the errhmmmm super titanium coating, getting the scratch out of the clasp (if you are inclined to do so) may show more. The green sunburst is awesome. Its okay. Would I buy one? Nah not really, unless it was going silly cheap. Great review

I’ve got divers ranging from $50-$4,000 but the one that has seen more actual dive time than any of the others is my citizen promaster diver. It’s quality enough and I’m not that worried if I whack it against a scuba tank (which I’ve done numerous times 🙄).

You got the wrong promaster. Get the one I just purchased to solve all your issues, asides for the mineral crystal: The Promaster Unite with Blue. No more underpants, no day complication, no left hand crown, thinner watch, stainless steel, no clashing red hand, no miyota 8000 series movement and did I mention the best dial EVER? Citizen is famous for their solar technology in the eco-drive, stick with what they do best. What I want for this watch? AR sapphire crystal and a stainless steel bracelet.

Nice looking watch I always liked the full lumed dial like the Heuer Night Diver. I’m definitely with you concerning case materials I’ve recently look at a Breitling Hurricane with breitlite and that £8000 for a reinforced polymer case 😢. Citizens coatings have always been weak and the only titanium watch I own is a Seiko Darth Vader Tuna which has dlc and a monster ceramic case protector. Titanium is a great material but is a scratch magnet that requires physical protection not just a coating.

Dead on correct regarding "Super" Titanium. I have a Promaster Tough Eco-Drive quartz. The solar aspect and accuracy of the watch is great. The understated design is great. The clasp, bezel, and case, look like they took a ride down escalator steps at the mall, and I am not an abusive owner. Seiko solar cells incidentally died in three pieces I've owned.

As a fan of both Citizen and Seiko, I have to say that Seiko still seems to carry the superior name, but in terms of build and QC, Citizen definitely leads the way in the market. There’s definitely much to admire dear citizen. Did you see what I did there? Click the like, it definitely helps my opinion. Haha. I've owned both Seiko and Citizen and, don't ask me why and shoot me down in flames if you don't agree, but I've always preferred Citizen more than Seiko.
No difference in quality and Seiko's, whilst excellent watches, are mostly a bit too blingy for me with those horrible scratch magnet chrome polished case backs.
