Man shot while preaching on street corner in Glendale

- A man is fighting for his life after he was reportedly shot while preaching outside a Glendale church.
The shooting happened at around 6:00 p.m. on Nov. 15 in the area of 51st Avenue and Peoria. Police say the victim, 26-year-old Hans Schmidt, was standing on the corner of the intersection, preaching to the public about attending a nearby church service.
Schmidt, who is a married military veteran and a father to two young children, was hospitalized in critical condition.
After the shooting happened, businesses in the area got a knock on their door from police, telling them to leave.
The owner of Jesse James Comics was among those being asked to leave by police officials. The store's namesake owner was in the middle of a livestream when the incident happened. He let his subscribers know he had to step away.
"Alright. Nothing like three cops at your door. OK. I am going to move my car, folks. I'll be right back because there was a shooting down the street, and I won't be able to get out of the complex so hang out for three minutes, and I'll be right back," James was heard saying in the livestream video.
"When I came out, they had changed the whole traffic, so the whole traffic was only down to one lane going through the complex," James recounted.
James learned about what happened on Nov. 16.
"It's something where they preach so much on this corner, and it's such a congested area," said James. "I always thought they might get hit by a car. I didn't know they would be shot."
After the shooting, James said he is going to be more aware of his surroundings.
"After tonight I think we just need to take those extra steps," said James. "Closing at the right time, making sure at nighttime, making sure at nighttime we have extra people on the floor… just be aware of our surroundings a little bit more."
Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call them at 623-930-3000 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS, or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish.
"This is a horrible, horrible event. We have a 26-year-old who is a military man, who was recently married and has two small children. He's in a critical state," said Gina Winn of the Glendale Police Department. "We believe there is someone in the Valley who knows what happened. If you saw an individual or vehicle, you're asked to call the Glendale Police Department."

For someone to say that they can see some type of justification in seeing someone shoot someone else for preaching a religious message on the street on a public sidewalk is disgusting.
Exactly but it only shows the level our country has fallen to.

I cannot believe the first person they interviewed attempted to JUSTIFY this horrific crime. How demonic of a country have we become that listening to a street preacher during a red light is enough to send someone into a fit of murderous rage
You obviously didn't watch the whole clip. He wasn't justifying it. He was trying to make sense of it. He was trying to tell people to be safe and watch their surroundings.

Edit: Just to clarify for those they don’t use the brain before responding, my point is that the original comment seems to imply that it’s a wicked generation because they’re going after preachers specifically, but people are shot for other things like playing their music too loud. It’s not like preachers are getting shot down on a regular basis whatsoever. I think most of us have the intelligence to understand what I meant, but there are those of you that don’t.

I’ve known this man since he was a young child. He lost his older brother many years ago from a sickness and now his mother and sister have to deal with this tragedy. His wife is such an amazing person, and it hurts my heart what she has to go through. Please pray for this family. I pray that God convicts the person that shot him and turns themselves in.

I'm actually an OPEN AIR PREACHER myself in Tucson Arizona!! I was in Gilbert this summer (40 minutes away from Glendale) ! Preaching at whiskey row nightclub. It was in the suburbs of Phoenix near where the pastoR was shot but we didn't have violent people such as what happened to this brave pastor.
I post all my evangelism preaching here on Y0utube too! Its getting worse in Arizona. I've had to get into self defense jiu jitsu fights at a Christmas event every year because people attacked us while preaching. The cops came and arrested the people that attacked us but it surprised me how dangerous it's getting in America! We're totally living in the last days so we as Christia s have to be vigilant. We can't assume America is safe because of our relatively peaceful nation (until recent times). God is showing me as I open air preach that the darkness is only gonna get worse but we have to fully trust God and walk in His will so that He can guide us in what to do when these situations occur in America. We are definitely under judgment.
Thank you for sharing what you did. And thank you for street preaching. A bunch of here on Cape Cod used to witness on the streets of Hyannis. It was great then, but there is much evil now, no one is safe. We need to come together as Christians and share our light with others. We are in the last days. Ask the Lord into your heart if you not yet done so. He will then never leave you or forsake you and will be in heaven when our time comes.

I have said many times that people should never be shocked when a preacher is gunned down in the streets. This is where things have been headed for some time. I do homeless or street outreach ministry but it is non-open air. The brothers such as yourself who do open air preaching must take heed and take stakes to protect yourselves out there. The devil is angry, people becoming more lawless and possessed, so persecution is coming heavy. The Lord has spoken to me concerning persecution and preached on it two Sundays in a row about 6 weeks ago.
I pray for quick recovery for the brother and for the protection of all ministers especially those who do open air preaching, such as yourself.

Man .pray for a speedy recovery. When Jesus commanded the great commission and the word to be spread he didn't mean street preaching. You can't go into hell and speak over everyone and correcting them. It doesn't work like that and you more likely won't be met with love and peace. When Jesus wanted to preach he went into synagogues. He even advised his followers DO NOT go in certain lands. Yes we are bold christians and should spread the gospel,but at the same time Jesus himself hid from the enemies. You cannot go into certain places and not use wisdom . Not have a body armor on..not have cops guarding you ..not thinking about the worst case scenario and be so quick to leave your kids without a father. Wisdom is needed as christians for sure.

Seems like James was trying to justify someone shooting a street preacher because they were "loud".
There is no excuse to shoot when you have police to handle any legal discrepancies on sound. Freedom of speech is legal.
