The importance of eating enough protein after Bariatric Surgery is often overstated. It's important at first, but a protein focused diet is not the way you should eat for the rest of your life.
Thank you for this information and video! I am 7 months post-op sleeve. As a previous vegetarian forcing myself to focus on animal protein constantly makes me extremely uncomfortable. This information is so helpful!
I am 30 days away from submitting all my paperwork to insurance provider with an anticipated approval for gastric bypass surgery 🤞. In the required 6 month period of meeting monthly with a nutritionist I have learned of numerous food intolerances to a variety of fruit and vegetables. The frustration is overwhelming because my mouth waters at the sight of delicious looking apples, aromatic citrus, juicy pineapple and robust looking strawberries and blueberries. I would give my right arm to be a vegetarian. I LOVE the taste of onions, garlic, brussel sprouts, spinach, broccoli, cabbage and a variety of beans (black, pinto, chickpeas) but ALL of these items I have a reaction to; nothing fatal but all annoyingly uncomfortable (itchy ears, swollen tongue, watery then sticky ooie gooie eyes, inflammation in my hands, feet, upper chest and top of thighs, digestive disorders, irritability, fatigue--often immediate need to go to sleep after eating produce). Thankfully I found a 100% all beef pure protein drink that I anticipate drinking as a broth pre-op and post-op. Most, if not all, protein powders you find at the store (Frys, Sprouts, Wholefoods, etc.) are all plant based and many have soy, egg, malt and barley (additional food intolerances/allergies) that I have a reaction to. I have read and TOTALLY embrace your suggestions in your "Pound of Cure" book BUT I am really challenged here. For some reason the only vegetable I DON'T seem to have a reaction to is a starchy potato. I am at my wits end (and have literally stumped several nutritionist over the last 5 months) with this. Have you seen/treated patients with similar food intolerances such as this? Is there ANY chance some of these food intolerances/allergies are "corrected" after gastric bypass surgery? I'm relieved that I got the protein piece figured out but I am nervous about getting the produce part into play. I'm currently struggling to find a multivitamin (tablet, capsule OR gummies) that I DO NOT have a reaction to. Thank you for reading all this Dr. Weiner.
Food intolerances are tricky - you should consult an allergist. Let them know what your bariatric nutritional needs are and work together to come up with a plan.
I am using Dr. Weiner's Bariatric Diet Guide and Cookbook. I'm five weeks post bariatric surgery and have decided to start my eating progress over again because I don't like the commercial protein shakes or the pureed foods I've been trying that make me feel bad. QUESTION: I haven't found any tofu recipes. Is tofu ill-advised for some reason? It is one food that seems tolerable.
Tofu is fine. However, too much soy can inhibit your thyroid function and mimic high estrogen levels which can raise your thermostat’s setting. Nonetheless, if you limit your soy intake to once per day, you should not experience these harmful effects.
Good morning! Thank you for this video! I am about to reach my 10 years as a VSG patient. Started at 250 went down to 170 then as years have passed gained it then lost in 2013 quick then gained again now i struggle with protein 😫 & heavy lifting exercises. Will watch your videos.
I’m 4 months post MGB I have 4 st off 1 to target. I eat beans the mixed ones chicken fish green vegetables love em berries. I’m wondering if there is any grain I can add I used to like porridge but it’s to processed I won’t touch it just wondered if there’s an alternative that’s gluten free. Your videoed have been such a help I’m glad I found you
I have a very serious question to make. Let's say that you have this surgery like gastric bypass or gastric sleeve. Will I be able to get muscle? I want to be a natural bodybuilder but this requires introducing large amounts of food. These surgeries reduce the amount of food. Protein in large quantities is needed for most bodybuilders.
I've only lost 25kg im 17months post op. Keto diet didn't work neither slimfast diet. Now im doing IF, im 65kg and goal weight is 48kg. Last 17kg is taking alot of work tbh. The surgery was a regret, ive lost 40kg with D+E twice before but I couldn't maintain it sadly.
Omgosh I'm so ready to be able to eat produce. My surgery was Nov8 and I'm just a baby into this. But I've NEVER been able to tolerate fake sugar or chemicals in containers or boxes etc. I rather just void all foods with that. But I'm having a hard time adjusting to the real foods I'm approved to have. I mentioned the headaches it causes or upset stomach to my nutritionist. I told her that my system has never been able to tolerate fake food. And she pretty much scoffed at me calling protein shakes fake food lol. It is!!! It doesn't come straight from a tree or pulled up from the ground. Is it ever possible to be completely vegan with a VSG?
Hello, I had the vsg surgery. My prealbumin levels are low, but I've been taking in the required amount of protein sometimes reaching 100g of protein, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I have following you for a long time. I have decided to have bariatric surgery but still not sure which type of surgery. I have been reading and learning that for long term (5 years and more), Gastric Bypass will be much harder for someone who cannot keep track of how much vitamins and mineral intake daliy. I am concerned about the long term malnutrition caused by the malbsorption of Gastric Bypass. Is it a a significant issue that I should be concerned about?
No. It's really just iron. I have a book called, "How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works." It gives you a complete rundown of what to expect from beginning to end. Check it out here: www.amazon.com/gp/product/1688128808/
@@apoundofcure Thank you so much for your reply. Can we safely say that it is much easier in term of diet (keeping track of what they eat) for Sleeve patients compared to Bypass patients since Sleeve does not have malabsorption aspect to it. I mean in deciding on what kind of procedure should a patient choose regarding their habit of eating. With respect to that they are eligible for both procedures, like having no GERD, no ulcers, non smoking and no need of taking NSAID medication. Is it then also true that in the long run, like 5 - 10 years down the road, if a patient who have bad eating habits will have much more health problems with bypass surgery compared if he/she had undergone the sleeve one instead.
@@timothytan2707 With regards to food, both surgeries require a strong, lifetime commitment of focusing on fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, beans, and small amounts of lean protein in order to be successful and avoid weight regain. The sleeve is less durable than the bypass. The bypass is more difficult when you eat greasy, fattening foods and you can't take nsaids after a bypass. Hello. I am Zeki Elban. I had total gastrectomy surgery 5 years ago due to stomach cancer. I cannot increase my muscle mass in my body because I cannot eat much meat, so can I take protein powder? Will doing this harm my liver and kidneys?
Dr I have been really battling with my weight after surgery. I eat 1x maybe twice a day. I simply don't get hungry but I'm not loosing weight. It's been 2 years after having the sleeve.if I drink protein shakes I gain alot weight. Any tips? In total iv lost 20kg. I'm still weighing just above 100kg
I had VSG surgery on 12/1/21 and have lost just over 40lbs. The weight loss happened rapidly ( first 3 weeks) and since then, O haven't lost a pound. Im struggling a bit with the protein shakes but try to eat as much protein as possible. I usually get about 40-50 grams a day. I exercise 3 times a week and get a good amount of fluids daily. I'm curious why I'm no longer losing weight? This is very aggravating and unfortunately, I'm left to figure things out as my nutritionist isn't very responsive. Please help. This is completely normal. Weight loss isn't a perfect downward trajectory. It's more like a set of stairs. Stay off the scale for a while and count your non-scale victories. Your weight x 0.3= protein amount recommended.

I ate produce and protein all at the same time. I went from 227kgs to 87kgs in 3 years.

Brown rice is my go-to. Just make sure to use whole grain brown rice and none of those "instant" versions. It should take about 40 min to cook.
I bought your bariatric recipe book - it is great! I am following my program's diet 2 months after bypass (
