Thank you for your great informative videos! My bariatric surgeon's office closed one year after my surgery and this is vital info. for me. I have gained about 15 lbs. since my bypass surgery 2 1/2 yrs ago. I just found you and your book! Will I be able to get to my ideal weight if I eat this way long-term? I lost about 80 lbs initially and stopped losing after about 9 mos. I have worked hard to maintain and not gain any more but your method of vegetables first is new for me and makes so much sense. Is it possible for me to still lose after this much time? I still need to lose about 90 lbs.
Deborah Roskos Focus on developing good habits like a Pound of Cure style diet and regular exercise - these are more important than what the scale says. This video may help: ua-cam.com/video/eZcUtdgt3fs/v-deo.html
which makes so much sense... when you question in In Pennsylvania... they look at you like you have 2 heads... and follow - up with "it's recommended" that you follow the dieticians requests and/or suggestions.
After my sleeve on April14, 2016 my iron went from around 300 to 965 so my blood Dr sain no foods including vitamins with iron- got a vid on that. thanks Galen
Is it K- lated iron formulation recommended for gastric bypass patients who are severely anaemic please? Can it be a pill taken daily or is it injected regularly please? I know that this is where I’m heading. Thanks
I am 16 1/2 years out and still have trouble with iron issues. Even had an ablation (rather than a Hysterectomy) but still having issues. My surgeon was excellent surgically but not so great in the followup and nutrition dept.
Kathy Draper Many hematologists are familiar with chelated formulations, even if they are not, you can buy them on the internet - you will need pretty large doses if your deficiency is severe. Sounds like you need some help from a good doc in your area familiar with anemia in bariatric surgery patients. Most traditional iron supplements are absorbed in the very first portion of your intestine and yours has been bypassed, remind your doctor about this and suggest a "chelated iron formulation"
I am moved away from my old endocrinologist and looking to find new docs. There was a larger bariatric surgery community in the larger town I was in . I also have osteopenia and haven't hit menopause yet. Need to find a good source for yearly DEXA scans too.
Kathy Draper Should check your Vitamin D levels too - a gastric bypass done 16 years ago was often much more malabsorptive than what's done today making you more susceptible to vitamin deficiencies.
yes I had the old school open surgery and I am not sure how much malabsorption. Thanks Dr. Weiner. Struggling to finish this weight loss journey but stay healthy at the same time. I just ordered your book. Just reading the available sneak peeks have made me aware of how much convenience food including protein bars and shakes I have been eating and not enough real whole food.
I am on second day of my gastric bypass given biola a yoghurt drink. I was wondering can i make soup with your listed vegetable and drink it making same thickness. Can i use salt and mild spices
I had a gastric bypass in 1994. It was the one that where they take the small intestine and reroute it to the end of the small intestine. I don’t think that I’m getting my vitamins. My vitamin B12 is ok. I’m anemic. My BP dropped while I was sleeping and woke me up. By the time I was in the ER bed I guess I went to sleep because I woke up with nurses and a dr around me. I asked if I had coded. They said almost. My BP was really low. They had IV’s in both arms. I drink at least 1 gallon of water a day.
What about taking those juice plus pills? - blended fruit and vegetable powders? Vitamins and supplements - premier protein shakes - these are things that feel safe to me. They never make me feel sick - I don't feel like I'm doing something bad. They help me reset. I haven't tried the juice plus pills but it seems attractive to get in those nutrients in this form.
My concern about these vegetable powders and juice plus pills is that they distract us from making the more important (and often more difficult) changes that are necessary for long term success.
+Dr. Matthew Weiner Ok thanks - I think I can see. ..pretty much not reinforcing portion control and food choices. Perhaps not also gleaning essential other nutrients and minerals we get from actual fresh foods too.
Thanks so much for these videos. They're a big help. I had my surgery Feb. 29, 2016 and I'm noticing an increase in my appetite as well as my capacity for food. I've stalled in weight loss . I'd like to know if there's any way to rejump start my weight loss or is it too late?
+Erika Bell regaining your appetite is normal. It's critical that you eat the right foods to restart your metabolism - my book outlines what I think is the best approach.
I have learned so much watching and listening to your channel. I am planning on doing my gastric bypass in Mexico. What is the recommended dosage for the K-lated iron formulation?
You are an extremely knowledgeable Doctor. I am so thankful to have found your videos as it feels you are mentoring me one and one. I have subscribed and am interested in purchasing your book. A question however I have for you, I am a vegetarian since young age via personal choice, I also don't do eggs or fish. Would I be at a higher risk of vitamin deficiencies after surgery than a normal meat eating person? I would appreciate to hear from you Doctor! Thanks for your information....
+RLR PLP You would only be at higher risk of B12 deficiency which can easily be prevented by taking a daily Bariatric vitamin. Assuming you are a vegetable eating vegetarian (there are many who eat primarily processed food), you should do great after surgery without eating meat.
I just had my gastric sleeve performed 6 days ago on 8/20. I took home several meds from the pharmacy, including bariatric multi vitamins. Do I take them immediately upon getting home, or when I’m on stage 3 of my post op diet?
wow, again thanks for great information. Wasn't told some of this even by my surgeon in Australia. I discovered after 18 months, seeing a dietician, that I was anaemic. I already take some of this though will need to increase these. Thank you.
thank you Dr, I thought walking and cleaning was not going to be enough. I also was not aware of including frozen veggies with frozen fruits for good nutrition. I do appreciate your videos and such quick response to questions. I have lost 75lbs, by now the weight is coming off more slowly, will it go back to losing it more quickly as in the beginning ?
Not aware of any daily patches for nsaids. Injections for short periods of time are reasonable. Gastric bypass patients are much more sensitive to nsaids than sleeve patients
Look for the 29mg supplements, they are chelated. It can be tricky - the ones on my website and from bariatric advantage, almost all their iron supplements are chelated.
I was looking up trying to find the cheated iron. The Vitman Shoppe sells one that is as iron Bisglycinate. Cvs sells one that is iron as Amino Acid Chelate. Which one is correct? Please let us know. Thank you
I had my bypass surgery at age 57 in May 2015. I started at 299lbs, 5 feet. I'm having trouble continuing to lose weight. I have ostioarthritis. also spinal, shoulder injuries and knee replacement all due to 2 severe falls. I can't exercise intensely, therefore I've been on pain meds for at least 8yrs. How can I optimize to continue losing weight and reaching my goal ?
Exercise is not nearly as important for weight loss success at age 57 as good nutrition is. I would make sure you are walking everyday, but more than that is unnecessary and will be more likely lead to injury than more weight loss. Focus your efforts on good nutrition.
I am scheduled for gastric bypass on February 20th and just recently heard of major dental complications from the gastric bypass. Can you give some insight if any on this. Also, I have read so much about so many complications, I am have doubts whether or not I should really go through with it.
There are NO KNOWN plant sources of B12. Unless it has b12 added, it doesn't have b12. Nutritional yeast (aka savoury yeast) usually (not always) has a good amount of b12 added, some (not all) soy milk, and some other veggo foods have it added. But you need to be really really sure you are getting enough from these sources if you're vegan and not otherwise supplementing. B12 deficiency can cause serious and permanent damage.
@@apoundofcure why is that? I am just curious my primary physician said he can put in the IV enough to last 2-3 weeks, so why can’t that replace bariatric vitamins
Hi Dr. Weiner, I love your videos as I am now 9 months post op (sleeve). I, like a lot of other people watch your videos to learn more as you tell us more than our own physicians. My question is I lost 85 pounds in 4-5 months and the only side effect I experienced was a sort of "brain fog", and a tired body, kinda of hard to explain. Have you heard of this with any of your bariatric patients? Thanks for all you do for us..
I have my VGS this Thursday and I hate swallowing large pills right now, so I can only imagine how difficult it will be post-surgery. I have been hearing a lot of people sing the praises of the vitamin patches. What are your views on the patches? TIA
Dr Weiner, Is there a bariatric vitamin company you recommend? My bariatric surgeon doesn't really say much about vitamin supplements other than we should take them. I don't want ones filled with a lot of non essential stuff like OTC ones from Walmart. I would like ones specifically made for bariatric patients.
Alicia Davidson We sell O'Purity in the office and some people like Bariatric Advantage. I sell the O'Purity because they are less expensive and are only one tablet per day, but a lot of patients complain about the taste. Bariatric Advantage taste better, are more expensive and require you to take several tablets daily.
Dr. Matthew Weiner I would love to buy them from you unfortunately I live in Arkansas and can't make it to your office so I will find them online. Thanks so much
I noticed your channel after doing a search to find out more information about gastric bypass surgery post-op. I had Gastric Bypass surgery around February of 2015 and have lost a significant amount of weight since the procedure. I was concerned because I am an emotional eater and have been experiencing stress and depression lately and I am worried that my stomach may stretched a little bit because I am gassy lately. It could be my diet, since unfortunately I have reverted to eating habits. I am committed to never going back to the formerly unhealthy version of myself, but its a process. But is there a way to help your stomach get smaller or resettle itself into its original size. I've seen several articles online that focuses on a method called Gastric Bypass Pouch reset. Are you familiar with this and if so, is it possible or effective? Thank you for the information it was so much more informative that anything my Bariatric surgeon or nutritionist provided. I am a new subscriber!
I have huge concerns about taking all of this darn calcium citrate. I am 8 weeks post op for a VSG. Frankly I don't understand it. I am a post menopausal woman whose dexa scan shows no osteoporosis. I have taken 10,000 IU of Vit D3 daily for several years because I need that much to keep my Vit D3 levels above 60. I also take Vit K2 100 mcg daily. I can't get a satisfactory response from my bariatric surgeon or the dietician to convince me that all of this calcium is necessary for me. In fact I am concerned that all of this calcium will have harmful effects on my cardiovascular system. How do I determine if my body really needs all of this calcium. Will blood work tell me if my body is getting enough calcium?
+naweofiam I personally don't have my patients take a calcium supplement - if you're concerned about osteoporosis, eating large amounts of vegetables and minimizing meat intake can help reduce calcium wasting by the kidneys and is probably a better strategy. I never supplement Vitamin K and would recommend that you discuss this with your doctor ASAP since Vitamin K can predispose you to heart attacks, strokes and venous blood clots (DVT/PE). It also sounds like you are taking more Vitamin D than you need. Just my opinion, there's not strong evidence on these issues so practices tend to vary from doctor to doctor.
@@apoundofcure Hi Dr. Mathew I had a sleeve gastrectomy in November 2019 and after 10 months my Vitamin D is 36.8 and my PTH 110.5 .. so I started to take calcium citrate and vitamin D .. Do I have to take calcium and vit D for the rest of my life?
It seems like I’m still doing the same thing as before to lose weight after vsg (is working out, counting calories , small portions ) I’m 1 1/2 years and I’ve lost 55 lbs. working my butt off to lose more but it won’t budge. What’s the deal. 5”2 210 (start weight 256).
Dr. Weiner - I will be having VSG and see a surgeon Feb.24/17. The nutritionist on staff said that I will need to take vitamins for life, including calcium. Although I have always taken at least a multi-vit, I don't seem to be able to take calcium - it makes me nauseous. I was told to try Calcium Citrate, much the same effect on me. Can I achieve the optimal amount of daily calcium I need through food after VSG, and at what point can I achieve this? Thank you!
I am pre op but I have a concern I will take up with my surgeon soon but it is about taking his required calcium supps when I have a history of kidney stones. I certainly dont want more.

hope your feeling better. You should make an appointment with him or another bariatric surgeon because this is a serious issue for you. And your primary care doctor should have been helping you more or have sent you to a nutritionist once he diagnosed your deficiencies

I began to have daily afternoon headaches when i started my weight loss journey May 1 2015. I was on Phentermine for a month shortly after that and i thought it was that.. i was taken off of it, and they didn't stop. I then thought maybe it was because i stopped diet coke and ate less sugar and fat. But it's now been 3.5 months and i still have them. They are mild, but come daily around the same time. So i stopped my multi vitamin (which i had started May 1st) and haven't had one since... any ideas? It was just a normal Natures Way multi vitamin,, not expired.. etc.
Mimis Blessed Journey No ideas on this one. Even though the headaches stopped at the same time you stopped taking your vitamin, it does not prove that the vitamins were causing the headaches. It could have just been a coincidence.
Ok, well thank you so much for taking the time to answer me. And the honesty that your not sure. I find it hard to believe also. Is it possible for me to still lose after this much time? I still need to lose about 90 lbs.
Deborah Roskos It's certainly possible, but won't be easy - give it a try!

Not aware of any daily patches for nsaids. Injections for short periods of time are reasonable. Gastric bypass patients are much more sensitive to nsaids than sleeve patients

Is Vitamin B12 found in any fruits or vegetables?
There are NO KNOWN plant sources of B12. Unless it has b12 added, it doesn't have b12. Nutritional yeast (aka savoury yeast) usually (not always) has a good amount of b12 added, some (not all) soy milk, and some other veggo foods have it added. But you need to be really really sure you are getting enough from these sources if you're vegan and not otherwise supplementing. B12 deficiency can cause serious and permanent damage.
