SANTA FE: A City That Looks Like Nowhere Else In The USA

- We spent a day in the capitol city of New Mexico, Santa Fe. While there we visited Loretto Chapel and it's famed staircase. The legend goes like this: When finished, there were no stairs up to the choir loft, since it was common for men to make up the choir and they would use ladders. However, this choir was made up of women (nuns), who because of their dress could not use ladders. So, the nuns prayed to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. On the last day of prayer, a mysterious man showed up with a donkey loaded with tools. He agreed to build the staircase but wanted total privacy and would disappear when anyone entered the chapel. Using minimum tools and only wood, the carpenter built this incredible spiral staircase. When the job was complete the nuns tried to pay him, but he was gone. Adding to the mystery, no one ever saw wood delivered to the chapel, and local lumber yards sold no wood to the mystery man. Amazing!
We also visited Santa Fe Square and the Palace Of The Governors, which was built in 1610 and is the oldest continually used building in the United States.
We stayed at the Best Western Plus Santa Fe

I was 9 when I saw that Chapel and staircase! I never forgot the beauty and power of it! I'm 76 now
One of my favorite cities!! Thank you for sharing
We live in Los Alamos, 45 miles north of Santa Fe, and in all my years I've never tired of visiting the plaza, shopping, and frequenting the many restaurants there. For anyone interested, the entire story of the staircase in the Loretto Chapel is truly amazing. There's so much more to the city and its culture, but with a time limit, it's hard to get to! I guess I missed you guys going into the capitol building! I enjoyed your visit there. I enjoy ALL of your video's! Thanks! ~ Mrs. C. ☯☮
That staircase is truly a miracle that I read about long ago. When Nic was lighting a vigil candle, she crossed herself, revealing her Catholic background. I’m Catholic too. Are you, Joe? Thanks for the fabulous video!🎉😊🙏🏻🕊
My very liberal hometown. Grew up there in the 70s and 80s. Much different now. My great great grandfather homesteaded there from Jefferson City, in the late 1800s; another place you featured. Love your videos! Merry Christmas.
I just love the architecture it so pure and stunning to the eye.
Yeah, it's really interesting!
Never knew that area could be so cold and snowy 🥶
Oh yeah I lived in Santa Fe for 4 years and now I live 20 miles east in Pecos and it gets in the negative numbers all throughout the winter months and several feet and of snow at times. The winter before I moved to Santa Fe they said they got 6 foot of snow and they were shut down for 2 weeks. You get used to it though although the snow always sucks after you've shoveled it as much as I have over the past few decades.
I was born and raised in east Texas and a few decades ago I moved to Santa Fe and lived there for 4 years and now I live 20 miles east of Santa Fe in Pecos NM. You should look me up next time you plan on doing a video of the area and I can give you details and places to go that most outsiders aren't aware of. New Mexico is the land of enchantment and the magic is more enchanting the more you know or who you know here.. Best state in the country but don't tell anyone we like it like it is not many people and miles of wilderness and desert..
good cold weather and awesome church .
i wish that church would be also explored by you but that was closed 😢.
Since you were going to Las Vegas, Nevada, you could have driven 66 miles east and gone to Las Vegas, N.M., The Original Las Vegas, where Doc Holliday was run out of town for killing someone who was shooting up his saloon in 1879.
I will in a couple of months. We'll be over there.
I have been to Sante Fe and the churches . I fell in love with that city. It was just so different in architecture and all
I've always enjoyed visiting Santa Fe.
Absolutely Incredible!😮😮😮
Somewhere near the town square--on it and opposite the Palace of the Governors, as I recall--was a Firestone Store. The store was there in the 40s and on into the 50s. It was owned by my father's father, a Texas and New Mexico builder who would become the chielf contractor for the International Style Sims Building in Albuqerque. For parts of the 40s and 50s I lived in Santa Fe.
Thanks happy to see Santa Fe
I totally get why you liked the staircase pretty cool ! Amazing old buildings I want to go there someday !
It was cool, Bill. An architectural wonder that engineers still don't understand.
Sounds like you are living the dream Joey?
I went to boarding school in Santa Fe in the 1950s, right next to the San Miguel mission. Our school was called St. Michael's. I would go to Mass at the oldest church daily. Sorry you missed it, maybe on your next visit to Santa Fe.
I love the Loretto Chapel and the staircase gave me chills!
I love Santa Fe! I may want to retire there.
Nicole, after lighting the candle, blessed herself in the Roman Catholic style. Very fitting.
👍👍👍
In 1960 the United States Post Office issued a 1 1/4 cent stamp depicting the Palace of the Governors .
Thank you ❤️. Enjoyed SF very much. What makes the water holy? Matthew 10:8. JC said.....You received free, give free. UK
Biutiful city, very artist
I heard it had no nails
If you stay in SF again, try the Drury downtown. It used to be the hospital! A few ghosts are known to inhabit the place!
For sure. Drury is our favorite hotel chain!
I believe it.
There are miracles happening all around us and every day. This story doesn't strike me as unbelievable.
Absolutely.
The staircase is a work of art, the man must have been quite the carpenter to be able to pull that off, the chapel is beautiful to.
It was beautiful, keyup. There's a picture of it online without the hand rails. Seeing that makes you understand what a wonder it is.
Lived near Santa Fe for many years, always enjoy strolling around the historic section. I believe one interpretation of the story of the staircase is the mystery carpenter was Joseph (Jesus' father). He was a fine carpenter, whoever he was.
Why didn’t you go to the state capitol building and get your passport stamped? I thought you visit every state capitol building.
It was closed that day. We have done a second Santa Fe video and got her book stamped in that one.
Holy water for $6.95. I reckon $7 would be asking too much. 🧐
LOL! Well, either you want it, or you don't!
Wow I can’t believe this is from 10 months ago! I was waiting for Santa Fe lol
