As a born & raised Santa Fean, the vast majority of the travel videos about this city are only mediocre. These 'don'ts' feel like they could have been written by a local, they are very comprehensive, fair and well researched. Thanks for representing my hometown so wonderfully!

I grew up in NM and hated it. As an adult I left as fast as I could. I have now come back and realized what an incredible state it is. Even tho it’s mis managed by its government it’s diverse cultures and landscapes and history is amazing. And the food is the very best there is.

I also left and came back, and yes, after seeing everywhere else NM is my favorite place in the country. There’s just nowhere else like it. 🏠 ☀️ 💕
And no government is perfect but I appreciate the progressivism here. Most of the country is soul-crushingly conservative. NM is a place where I feel free to be myself.

@@brightharbor_New Mexico thankfully isn’t “Coastal Blue”. It’s more of the classic “Midwestern blue” I grew up with. Sensible. (I’m from Missouri but live in Texas now). The only gripe I’ve got is NM gun laws. I’m expected to not defend myself in Albuquerque, and idk how familiar you are with specifically Albuquerque, but that’s problematic. I avoid this conundrum when visiting NM by not going to Albuquerque. I usually go to Ruidoso or Mora / Taos area. Like every damn body else who lives in Texas.

Here's a tip from a local! If you want GOOD local food, go where the locals eat. Atrisco's in the DeVargas Mall. Here, you won't get "Tex-Mex" tourist food. You'll get down home old fashioned New Mexico cooking. This is not a five star glitzy trap. It's a low key restaurant. It's always crowded and a bit noisy, because we who live here love this place! The DeVargas Mall is out a ways, NOT in the center of town. It's near the National Cemetery and just a neighborhood shopping mall somewhat North of the Plaza. NOT in walking distance either.

Wolter is such a cool and friendly dude. I have been watching his videos for years and discovered some of his videos way back in 2017 before I went to Brazil for the first time and they helped me tremendously so a big thank you again to you Wolter! And thank you for letting me take a photo with you last year! Meeting you was a dream come true from one traveler to another I really appreciate all of the advice you give in your videos, your friendly nature and down to earth personality! You're the best man! :) All of the advice you gave about my city was spot on! I think you filmed this last year right? One of the unfortunate things with the Railrunner now as an update is that its not operating anymore because of the virus situation. So Uber or Lyft for those that want to come to Santa Fe from Albuquerque would be the only option until our governor reopens the Rail Runner Train. And yes! Lovely video! So many really good recommendations. As a local it's really great to see any part of New Mexico get good press, so thanks.
A recommendation to potential tourists from said local: don't discount the significance of the Rail Runner train for getting between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Although presently you shouldn't be traveling for leisure amid the pandemic, and thus the train isn't currently running, it is still one of, if not the most inexpensive means of traveling this distance. Scheduling may seen inconvenient, but the shuttles alone often aren't worth it. There are buses and shuttles that can take you a nearby station from the ABQ Sunport and the train is not that much slower than a shuttle. Uber will cost you at least $75 to make that trip one way, and most shuttles will cost $100 or more even if you are traveling alone. Full one way fare's for two travelers costs only $18 on the train and reduced rates for seniors, youth 10-17, students with current ID, and medicare recipients, it would be only $8. For that price you can get to Santa Fe a bit slower and enjoy some lovely views that you won't get from the highway. Just something to keep in mind :)

The beauty in New Mexican food is the simplicity of its ingredients. You really don't add too many spices beyond salt garlic and maybe some pepper. The chile really does the talking, which is why its so important to have the good stuff. Some people add oregano and cumin but I personally prefer without it, chile really does have a strong enough flavor on its own.
Also Tex-Mex is mostly a creation of Mexican-American immigration whereas New Mexican food is a creation dating back to the Spanish Colonial period with a lot of influence from the Native Pueblos and Dine people who many New Mexicans are ancestry to.
Edit: Just an example, some influences from indigenous cuisine include pinon pine nuts, fry bread, corn tortillas, and calabacitas
Sopapillas were also invented in Albuquerque, the word come from the extinct 14th century Muslim-Spanish language Mozarabic. The language most likely came to New Mexico during the two major migration waves in 1598 and 1693-6 as recent converts from Jeduasim and Islam fled to the farthest reaches of the Spanish Empire to practice their old religious beliefs in secret.

I am born and raised in New Mexico and I respectfully disagree. It's not exactly Disneyland, but there are things that kids can enjoy. You just have to know where to look and be willing to take a day trip as this video suggests. Most kids will love Meow Wolf, the Balloon Fiesta, the ABQ Bio park, the Sandia Peak Tramway, and the NM History Museum. If you're willing to venture out even further, there is White Sands Missile Range, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and the International UFO Museum.

Also, my personal favorite restaurant is Sadie's either on 4th street or Academy. There are some good museums as well! If you have maybe a month or so, check out the International Balloon Fiesta at the beginning of October! Also check out White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, and my personal favorite Taos(the best skiing in New Mexico). Edited to add: If you do Meow Wolf, remember that what you get out of it depends on what you put into it. You have to get the right mentality prior to starting. Many exhibits need you to climb/crawl or otherwise get involved.
Also, there's A LOT more to Santa Fe than the Plaza and a few other places. There are many pueblos that do tours. Waterfalls are within 30 minutes. The surrounding areas are fascinating.

If you hang around long enough, you'll see a celebrity or two and maybe a movie shoot. I used to eat lunch on the plaza (I worked 2 blocks away) and one day Robert Wagner and his wife walked past. Another evening I had dinner at the Thunderbird, and when I came downstairs, Nick Nolte was inside the Plaza Cafe shooting a scene for a show.

Great advice for one of my favorite vacation cities. Can't afford to live there but it's great to visit! The Folk Art Museum is my favorite - a world class collection! There's also a fantastic Mexican market about 15 minute drive from downtown, a wonderful place for an affordable souvenir. I love your comment about the stars - we drove outside of town one night and the stars were unbelieveable. You ate at one of the best restaurants there - a yummy and beautiful place. Looks like you and Jocelyn had a rare vacation alone - good for you!

THANK YOU for visiting NM for one and two for doing a vid of Santa Fe. I have really enjoyed ur vids on other places over the last couple of years. To see one from my home state is very exciting. New Mexico has a lot to offer the historic sites alone can keep you busy. The state is huge by European standards and traveling from site to site can be hundreds of miles. When the pandemic is over I hope everyone who visits the States considers New Mexico as a stop. Also IT IS NOT PART OF MEXICO. I have to explain that more than I can believe, even to Americans. Please check out as many sites as u can here. Chaco canyon is an amazing place.

  • @bookbear619
    @bookbear619 4 роки тому +3

I'm not a native, but after 40 years in NM, I consider myself an honorary semi-native. I just have a few small points to add.
When walking in downtown Santa Fe, be ULTRA-CAREFUL when crossing streets. The drivers here are often blind to the existence of crosswalks, especially anywhere close to the Plaza. When driving, in general, never expect the other drivers to do the right thing, or you'll be dead wrong. Especially on I-25 and other freeways in NM, if you see a car entering the freeway in front of you, it's best to move to the left lane, if you can, and just let the other car do whatever he wants. You'll probably notice the other cars around you doing the same thing -- it gets to be instinctive after awhile.
New Mexican home cooking is FANTASTIC, and the chile heat level is usually relatively mild. Restaurants that cater to tourists (with a few nice exceptions) do NOT serve home cooking. Unless you're accustomed to eating a lighted can of Sterno, order your chile ON THE SIDE until you get used to what you're getting. Usually green chile is milder than red, but only a little, and chile can affect different people in different ways. Ask your server which will be milder that day, if it matters to you. Having your chile on the side (in a little bowl so you can control the amount) is something you'll thank yourself for if you're not accustomed to having your face burned off. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! As Wolter said, New Mexican-style cooking is different from what the rest of the country thinks Mexican food should taste like, which is often watered-down Tex-Mex. I myself avoid any food that claims to be Southwestern anywhere north or east of Texas. and I've saved myself a LOT of distress by sticking to that rule.
Finally, don't assume that Hispanic New Mexicans speak only Spanish or that Anglos speak only English. New Mexico is EXTREMELY multi-cultural. Also, Santa Fe and Los Alamos are home to people from all over the world, and many are highly educated. I myself am low-life here since I only have a master's degree. No matter where you're from, you'll probably find yourself meeting people who either are from or have been to whatever place you call home. And while I'm on my soapbox, RESPECT NATIVE AMERICAN LANDS AND CULTURE. I can't say that enough. Common courtesy goes a long way!

Lived in Los alamos for 2 years and 3 additional don'ts:
Don't forget alot of the land around Santa Fe is Native American Reservations, who do have access policies but also beautiful places to visit and if you're into it, Casinos.
Don't miss Los Alamos. It is gorgeous and it's like you're in another world up here.
Don't visit Espanola at night accidentally. Alot of the small towns in New Mexico are not entirely safe. Plan your trips.

Santa Fe is especially careful about their light pollution - lots of covered lights at night that only create light pools in sheltered areas and don't shine upward. You noticed how easy it is to see the stars because of it! :) ABQ is not so careful and has terrible light pollution (BUT amazing views of city lights at night!) (I've lived in both Santa Fe and ABQ, I love them both - just thought it was great you noticed the clear SF night skies)

Hi there, my name is Tania Marines, I live in Dixon, NM where my partner Ric Gaudet and I own and operate One Straw Farm (onestrawfarmnm.com) a small organic vegetable and flower farm. We are long time vendors at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market, another awesome venue to check out when you come back to Santa Fe, with all its beautiful produce, flowers, farm grown crafts and value added products, music and plenty of cheer to go around. There are also many artist studio tours held year round, at many of the beautiful rural locations surrounding Santa Fe and Taos. I participate in the annual Dixon Studio Tour (dixonarts.org)held the first full weekend in November. This year we will be hosting a virtual tour, Nov 7th and 8th, but we highly recommend you come check out the Northern New Mexico artist tours, when things settle down, especially ours, in Dixon, the oldest, still running tour in NM! We host many people at our farm and home, where they can walk around the farm, grub on homemade NM food and cold pressed cider made from Dixon apples and purchase my beautiful dried flower/botanical arrangements made from what we grow on the farm! My dried flower arrangement business is Season’s Muse at One Straw Farm (seasonsmusenm.com coming soon)! There are many artists on the tour creating a beautiful range of work in many diverse mediums! Hope you can check us out, One Straw Farm and Season’s Muse as well as the Dixon Studio Tour. We hope to see you at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market or at one of the year’s to come Dixon Studio Tours! You could make a really cool video about the Northern NM Summer/fall tradition of Studio Tours, beautiful time of year, in the fall, when all the Cottonwood trees are bursting with color along the Rios of our beautiful Valleys! Don’t forget about the wineries as well, like our favorites, Vivac Winery, La Chiripada Winery and Black Mesa Winery!

Both of my parents are from Santa Fe so we had a lot of family there when I was growing up. I have visited there at least 30 times. Here are my don'ts:
    1. Don't expect the locals to be happy to see you. If you like a welcoming atmosphere, Santa Fe may not be for you. People are polite enough but this not an aloha spirit or kumbaya kind of place.
    2. Don't forget to ski if you are there during the winter. Skiing is a 30 minute drive from downtown and the snow is like Utah or Colorado but the lift tickets are like SoCal.
    3. Don't forget to eat a chili relleno with every meal. So good.
    4. Don't even mention Tex-Mex when talking about the food. That would be like going to a fine steak house and mentioning the Sizzler.
    5. Don't skip this video. Mark really got a lot of good information into this and it is worth knowing before going.
