This is an Awesome setup guide, I've been looking at guides for a week and was super confused about how it all worked, this makes it simple and I actually understand how it works now!
worked like a charm!! no lost connections or anything!! I also did a *leaktest* to see if it would leak my dns settings or IP address.... the first test leaked my DNS settings (I have a private DNS provider) I don't have cloudflare but it said I did... so I did additional test (turn off my phone, then turn it back on) and it worked great with *zero leaks!*
Thanks to your videos, i have purchased a Asus RT-AX3000 router and so far i am super happy with it. Thank you all the videos you have published on this. I do have one question if you dont mind. Which would you recommend, WireGuard or OpenVPN?
@@KnowledgeSharingTech Thank you for your reply. I was using an old ASUS router and I use 1000Mbps plan at my home in Hong Kong. I barely can't access the router OpenVPN in UK, the speed is too slow. I later on got a NAS sever and set up a VPN serve on it, while connect it to the LAN port of the old router. OpenVPN server on the NAS runs at around 30Mbps while WireGuard runs at around 100Mbps on the NAS while my friend visit my server in US. I hope the new ASUS router can reach 100Mbps via WireGuard protocol, so that I don't have to turn on the VPN function on my NAS.
Thanks alot for this video and I was able to follow it easily. However, my requirement is little different. I cant install anything in my company laptop (its not allowed & locked) but i want to change my location. I tried using Asus router VPN option using the ExpressVPNs open VPN server but the speed is very slow. Hence, I am here trying to see if wireguard can increase my speed. I think in my scenario, I need to have 2 router configured, One working as VPN server and other one (router 2) connecting to that server which lets me mask my location by only connecting to wifi from router 2. Is there an easy way to do this?
it's very strange, I followed your guide step by step, everything seems alright but when I check my IP, it's still the same than my public IP, and I can't access to my asus if I'm connected to wireguard. Any idea ? thank you
Hello, the step by step is clear but as soon as I launch the Wireguard connection on either my mobile phone or my computer, the internet connection is severed . Therefore something must be different in my configuration such as the Ip addresses of the different items connected to my rooter that is an Asus AX6000.
I don't understand the client part. I set up Proton VPN on my Keenetic Router. Now the entire internet connection in my home is under Proton VPN (phone, PC, TV, console etc.). Why do I need to set up additional clients and install additional apps to PC and Android to access the internet in the way that you explain here? Is there an additional benefit of doing so?
Have you ever played around with portable routers, such as the GL iNet routers? I hope that you could do a review on them. I know that you can put OVPN files from Nord VPN and a few other VPN services on them
Agreed.. I have the GL iNet router too. Would love to enable this on the travel router so I can use my Smart TV in my camper and access Hulu on the go.
Hi, i followed all your instructions but for some reason, I dont get any internet connection on my phone. I downloaded the wireguard app on my google pixel. I set up the configuration on the asus router. On the Asus UI, when I hover my mouse over the key icon in the list of vpn clients, it shows it is disconnected. However on the wireguard app, i toggled to connect to it. What am I doing wrong?
@@KnowledgeSharingTech I have tried it and set DDNS. After restarting my router, wireguard doesn't work. I need to update the QR code and scan it again to make it work☹️
Great video. I followed your instructions and set up three AX58U routers. However, I need to create a site-to-site VPN so that each router can use its own ISP. Additionally, one of the routers has an external USB HDD connected to it, and I would like to be able to access that drive from the clients connected to the other routers. Do you have any settings for setting up a site-to-site VPN on these routers?
@@KnowledgeSharingTech It appears that the AX58U does not support IPSec as a client, only as a server. After some research, I've found that the only feasible option for creating a Site-to-Site VPN is to use OpenVPN. Unfortunately it doesn't support SMB and the HDD connected to the router.
What if I want to do this with a VPN service I already pay monthly for? I use Wndscribe. How would the setup differ if I want to do this with my Windscribe desktop app?
Hello! I'm trying to set a Wireguard vpn but had stuck. I'm using TP-link router as a server but I think there is no difference. So I made all the steps - installing Wireguard clilents on 2 machines running Windows 10. I can ping both computers on their VPN's IP addresses 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.3 but when I try to explore shared folders witn Windows explorer I can see only a "FileDrop" folder but not windows shared folders. What do I miss? Can you help me? Thank you!
Thanks for the video. Isn't the OVPN protocol considered "stealth VPN", while Wireguard is not? The stealth VPN is when the site you are visiting doesn't know you have a VPN running. Do I have any of that right?
Hello, when testing from outside using ipleak or browserleaks i do see My house ip and my ISP on top of the result then under DNS Addresses - 36 servers detected, 300 tests and all shows different ip with google as ISP. it does not leak the IP where i am connected from. is this OK or did i missed something on setup. Thank you for the video
I have a question, since setting up on Asus router that has public IP we don't need port forwarding, but is that port still open and vunerable to the Internet and if so how to secure it? Also if you are using the port forwarding route, how to secure that using DMZ?
i have the same configuration but still wireguard connected but not able to reach my other side , not piniging , no internet working , no rdp working and everywhere its same Please advise
I posted a message earlier, but it to have disappeared. One time marker 7:01 after you installaled the WG client and imported the configuration file. The DNS is 10.6.0.1; how is that determined?
Is there a way to get it to use internet traffic on the phone such that its using the cellular download speeds, seems once connected to the home vpn, the speeds are limited to the upload speed of the vpn by default, so speedtests and other non local vpn ip traffic are quite slow?
More then 10 clients for a home router would be a stretch. It also depends on your Upload speed. You can check more professional routers if you want more then 10 clients
@@KnowledgeSharingTech At time marker 7:01. After you imported that configuration file into the client, it shows the DNS Server as 10.6.0.1. How did you determine that?

Thank you for the explanation. It was useful, but I have a question about activating it. I wanted a European server, for example, so can I do this?
Thank you for your clear tutorial! Just wondering how fast is the WireGuard VPN when access it remotely?
Witeguard doesn’t put too much overhead on the connection so the speed depends on the internet connection speed

You're going through the VPN, so you cannot go faster than what the VPN server can handle.

This works on any router that supports Wireguard VPN server
