Painted Willow Art Paint -Along - Doodle Bird

- Look at these cuties!! In this video I'll show you how to create these doodle birds and some useful watercolor and drawing skills in the process. We'll look at color blending, basic drawing, the concept of whimsical art and the process of adding doodles to our art.

Materials needed:
1 piece of 140 lb watercolor paper (I used 9x12)
1 round #8 watercolor brush
Watercolors of your choice
Pencil and eraser
Waterproof black pen ( I used Pigma Micron 05)
White pen (I used Uniball Sygno Gel White)

There are lots of people demonstrating basic watercolor techniques (and a kazillion other things), but one of the first things I noticed on opening this video is that your voice is very pleasant. It's not high pitched, screechy, and so fast I can't follow. It's not so soft and muffled or breathy that it can't be understood. Just - kinda like Baby Bear's chair, and porridge, and bed. Thank you!

I had covid earlier in the year, and I still don't breathe right and most of the time I feel like I'm breathing really hard and I worry that will get in the way of enjoying the painting. Love the finished bird and your presentation - no annoying music (thank you!), just quiet, clear instructions that are so easy to follow. You've really inspired me. I'll be watching again and following along. I'm a beginner with watercolor and drawing, but trying to move away from stamps when making cards so they are more personal and unique. Thanks!

@aidellanebekker4599 - I have never heard of Happy Painting until now. I took a look and the style is similar, but not copied. This is not a unique style of painting to anyone. I know lots of artists who do whimsical creatures, animals and other things that are multicolored and doodled. I appreciate your concern, but I assure you this is not copied from them or anyone & I've never taken a class for this.
Your "whimsical bird" is just lovely and vibrant. Thank you for showing us beginners. I especially liked the wet on wet blending technique. You brought everything to life. I will look forward to giving this one a try. You explain everything so well. I enjoyed watching.

I suffer from a very painful permanent medical condition and I found painting takes my mind of the pain a little more than reading does.. thanks x
My whole goal is to help people who don't think they can draw or paint get started - because we all have creativity in us. I'm so glad you feel inspired by this. That just makes my heart so happy. I too have a hard time stopping myself from trying to always paint in a more realistic way. Also come from a long career in accounting, though my degrees is actually in Art. This is a very fun video. ❤️🤓😜

I just found your channel. I seriously have very little artistry about me - I don’t stand a chance drawing a straight line using a ruler. Anyway. I made one of theses whimsical birds, pausing your tutorial while I caught up. My result - I over mixed the paints so not as vibrant and made eyeglasses when I didn’t care for the eyes. BUT, it was fun and silly. Thank you so much.

Found your channel today and I'm so happy I did. I work from home doing...accounting! My entire career has been logical thinking day in and day out but there is this creative side that is screaming to come out. I related so much to what you said in the video about letting go and letting the whimsical side flow. I seem to have a death grip on whatever utensil (pen, pencil, brush) I'm using and I have to make a very conscious effort to relax and let go when I'm drawing or painting. Your words are so encouraging and I love the way you teach. I love that you not only say what you're doing but why you're doing it. I can't wait to try my hand at this little bird...it's just so cute! Thanks for sharing your gift with us.

I can tell you from experience... the more you create, the more mindful you are about it (making the effort to relax the death grip for instance), the easier it gets. Abstract & loose used to be physically painful for me. Still is sometimes, but it has gotten easier and more and more fun. Just keep doing it - and feel free to ask me questions as you give this a try. 💜💜💜

So fun, thanks! Need to buy a new black gel pen.. mine is a unibell vision needle (not gel??) and says waterproof but was not and ran so had to be really careful.

That's perfectly OK. Tapping against a pencil accomplishes the same thing. Just a different way to get there. It's all good!😁😁🥰

Dawn, I'd like to order some gel pens like the ones you previewed in one of your tutorials. You mentioned you found the pens in a grocery store, I don't remember the brand. Thank you and Happy New Year.
Sorry for taking so long - your comment got sent to spam for some reason.🤷♀️. Most of the pens I use I get on Amazon. I think even the grocery store ones you can find on Amazon. The black pens I use most are Uniball Deluxe Micro and Uniball Eye Fine. The ones from the grocery store were Pentel Sparkle Pop silver & gold pens. I also used to recommend Pigma Micron pens, but they are felt tip & I've switched to ball point. They are still good though - just preference. Does that help or was there another pen you were wondering about?
