Ian, this is the best overall Ronin S tutorial out here in UA-cam land. Great presence. Clear explanations. Organized and thorough, covering every possible consideration when operating a gimbal mounted camera. I can't say enough. Glad I found you today after trying so many others out there. Woof
I struggled for two hours trying to see why the motor shakes, then discover your video talking about it and how to auto tune it I cant thank you enough
Thank you for this video! This was extremely helpful and in-depth! I just purchased a used (like new) Ronin S, and had it set up in no time! I’ve been doing photography for about six years, and finally wanted to venture into some videography. I believe this will be a great start to that.
thanks so much for this video! Iv had trouble figuring out the tilt disable whic youve made very clear and helped me and learning new functions like sport mode and configuring the app!
Great info! For what it’s worth, DJI recommends you balance the tilt axis first. I still agree: you’ll have to go back and fine tune anyway, most likely.
Hi Ian. You are a clear and precise teacher. At 17:08 I see that you have connected the camera to a monitor. However, the cable affects the balance a lot. How did you change the settings?
Hiya, once the cables attached you just need to go through the balance sequence again, normally the cable will primarily alter the roll axis and the cameras forward and backward axis, so it’s just going through those balance sequences again. Normally it’s only minor adjustments that need to be made. If possible it best to use a flat thin hdmi cable as it will help with balancing the cable ☺️👍
Hey I’m having a lot of trouble with stabilizing the roll axis. I can manage to make it sit still at 0 degrees, but can only make it keep one of the sides at 45 degrees.
I have a Ronin, when I lean left and the right, it lags when I turn to the left. Can we communicate so that you can help me with Ronin's calibrations? Thank you.
Hiya, if it’s lagging when you move it will be a combination of the speed settings and the deadband setting which you can change via the app I think I start talking about this in the video from around 15mins and 38 seconds
Thank you so much Ian. Best explanation and also for the app. Now after my first attempt, and a balance test and auto tune; the gimbal (camera) is not level but facing downward very slightly (even tho my balance test was excellent on all axes. I suppose i should turn off and check the balance manually? I will get there...thanks again you made it possible for me to begin using this amazing piece of gear 🙏
Yes you could check the manual balance, or do a system calibration from the app in the ‘setting’ area, or try the ‘restore gimbal parameters’ from the settings area Incase you have something accidentally enabled which is causing the downward tilt, glad the video is helpful ☺️
Hello dear, but mine even after balancing properly it still not holding the camera still. The camera keeps on falling all the time, the ronin is dead or what? In the beginning yes it was holding but after sometimes of several use you have to suffer and sometime it doesnt hold the balance
Ian, question: I added an external monitor and with the cable plugged in the camera pulls the camera off balance a bit; it is it necessary to re-balance with the cable connected? thx
Yeah I’ve always had to rebalance if I add a cable, normally it’s the roll axis which needs adjusting and sometimes the tilt, if you get one of those thin flat strip cables it makes it much easier than a traditional heavy cable ☺️
You could set the gimbal into Sport mode, which would make the reaction time of the gimbal much quicker. On the RS2 you hold the M button and double tap the trigger at the same time to enable sport mode. (A man running will appear in the top corner of the lcd screen). See if it enables this mode on the Rs3 using the same setup ☺️
@@matjanssen6675 I remember the locking latch being a problem and snapping on quite a lot of owners when it first came out, which is probably why the RS2 has a redesign , sorry it’s got a problem on yours, hope you manage to loosen it 👍
@@thelostboytanmoy it’s just called DJI Ronin on the App Store, I’m guessing it will be dependent on which country you live in, if it’s not on your App Store search for it on DJI’s website
This is the best tutorial I've found, but I still couldn't get it balanced. I'd balance at one point, but then it would be imbalanced at another... Frustrating.
Hiya, the settings you choose for each M parameter will ultimately depend on the types of shots you want to get; I normally have one of the M buttons set to pan only (for if I want to create controlled static panning movements), and then a second M parameter set to pan and tilt, normally with slow to medium speed settings, as I tend to find fast settings create rather erratic motion which isn’t something I really want, (unless I was filming sports or actions scenes, in which case I’d normally put it into sport mode instead). I rarely enable the roll function because I don’t often use Dutch angles, and I’d rather have a level horizon. Hope this helps ☺️
Excellent in depth tutorial Ian, great efforts you put in to explain things in detail for gimbal operation. I am having a very peculiar problem with Dji gimbals & seek your help if you can. I shoot real estate videos where vertical/horizontal alignment is basic need, theoretically gimbals can do this alignment perfectly by locking all axis however Dji gimbals I have tested in lock mode the pan motor changes the yaw while I move left to right in spite all 3 axis locked. I tested with Ronin RS3, Ronin RS3 mini & Ronin SC gimbals, they all show this drifting problem. Is there a setting to ensure that the pan doesn't drift as seen in the video? MY gimbal test shows excellent balance by Ronin app yet this problem happens. Here is the link to video showing the problem ua-cam.com/video/g-AVecxxe44/v-deo.html
The best video tutorial about Ronin S, explained with patience and details. Appreciate your efforts. Very complete guide.

I've watched a couple tutorials setting up the Ronin, it couldn't get it. This tutorial was the best, I got it..Thank You!
Literally the best Ronin S Balancing video created. Thank you so much!
Ian, you clearly articulate the set up process to confidently prepare my gimble for the shoot. Greatly appreciated, Cheers!

I can’t figure out what app to use, there are a bunch in the App Store. What is the exact name of the app I should use? Thank you!
Hi, it’s called ‘DJI RONIN. The app thumbnail has DJI written in white in the middle, a black/grey background with 2 red stripes on it
What's the app ??
Nice thanks !!
I can no longer remove the battery from the Ronin S ?
Has the battery been dropped and become swollen or cracked? or is the locking catch broken or jammed?
@@ianthurstan no, the battery has not been dropped think the lock lever is stuck.

It could be that some of your locks are slightly loose, so as you move the ronin into different positions the balance points shift over time
