    Michael, thanks for this. I like how you put your sky in after the trees. I've seen you do that before and it allows you to 'cut' into the tree shape. It avoids that cut out pasted on look. Those trees and ice plants remind me of living out there for 2 years. We don't see that in Tallahassee, Florida

      Thanks Barbra Joan! Yes, exactly. You can sort of carve out the shape of the tree. Also, you can get some nice blended edges where the foliage meets the sky.

    Beautiful painting❣️Enjoyed color mixing cues. Curious about colors for water? Once again , thanks for sharing your knowledge. PATREON membership is well worth it for sure! Enjoy the extras you provide

      Thanks Annie! For water I usually start with ultramarine, a bit of titanium white, and a touch of burnt sienna. That gives me a dark blue green and then I adjust from there.

    Why do you mix liquin & spirits ? And when you’re painting thick over thin, do you use any liquin/ spirits at all ? Thank you!

    Hello from Torquay, Victoria, Australia. Another great video Michael. You are indeed very generous with your time and I know your fan club appreciate that. I’m interested in the brush you were using mate. New trek?? 209...Is that how you spell it? Cheers.

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Mark! The brush is a Utrecht 209, available at Blick online, but any decent quality natural bristle flat will do.

      I don't have a go to set, but I like natural bristle flats and synthetic brights and flats. I use 8s and 10s most often.

    Don’t understand why you didn’t capture the extreme angle of the tree trunk? That is the biggest attraction of those trees, and shows how they have grown under sometimes extremely windy conditions. Sorry Michael, but you missed the real subject on this painting. It could have been so much better.

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  3 роки тому +6

      Haha, ok Steve. It's up to the artist to decide what the biggest attraction is in any given scene. I've painted that leaning tree several times before, this time I focused on the silhouette of the more upright trees to the left.

      @@chamberlainpaintings Oh I must admit I thought you were painting the dramatic sloping tree as well and so I felt a bit confused. But I think the idea was to show how to apply thick paint and sky holes.

      Perhaps it's also a lesson in artist inspiration. You bring your soul to the moment and interact with it.
      It's not a photograph. It's a unique take on a moment, which makes it dynamic.
      Everything is moving.
      Loved the reminder about making those choices in composition. It's the fun challenging aspects that makes a painting unique.
