“I could hear German voices around the dugout. I was afraid the Germans would [R] me. I pulled out my revolver and put the muzzle to my temple. I could already feel the touch of the steel when I realized that it was preposterous for a strong, healthy person to end her own life... I put my revolver back in its holster. Then a German officer jumped into the dugout. He started picking up map-cases, weapons and compasses. When he spotted me, his eyes widened. ‘Weib? Weib? Woman?’ he said, and made a grab at my chest. I pushed his hands away. ‘Weib,’ I said, and told him to stop touching me. I took off my map-case and handed over my revolver. He was especially pleased with the map-case.”

My great-grandfather went to great lengths to evacuate my grandmother(15 years old in 1941). He worked in Kharkov at factory#183(original T-34 producer) while my grandmother lived in a nearby village with his parents. When evacuation began, he left his post, drove to the village and took his daughter straight to the train station where the factory equipment was being loaded. His parents refused to leave their home and saw all the horrors of the ocupation. He died in Stalingrad, while my grandmother is still alive. To honor him, his co-workers got a pass for my grandmother to return to Kharkov via a military train, thus bypassing the strugles most civilians had in trying to return home on civilian trains.

I have read that the Germans at Kharkov would steal food from the civilians as apart of their Hunger Plan, which was to commit mass murder and genocide using starvation as their main weapon. Also an absolutely wretched man named Paul Blobel was present at Kharkov and as SS-Standartenfüherer of Einsatzgruppe C.; he was tasked with the murder of 21,685 Jews that were unable to escape Kharkov. I want you to know that your great-grandfather was indeed a hero, as he saved his daughter from the wrath of truly evil men like Paul Blobel.

@@zircon6071 there is more nuance to that, and no, Russia was not the "magical saver of the world" or anything, at best it was the USSR (germans were fighting the entirety, the other nationalities fought bravely and died for their homeland in numbers, too) and in reality it was the allies together, as soviets' production game had to be buffed up by the US in a number of ways, besides, the soviets have a list of war crimes outside germany that are harder to justify morally. The "only great russia" stuff is russian propaganda, mostly.
The individualsmost often were heroes, as e.g the story above, absolutely, but political entities hardly ever are, they have other motives and should be seen as such.

There is a Hungarian documentary series called Krónika (sadly only available in Hungarian as far as I know) by Sándor Sára of the 2nd Hungarian Army at the river Don, in which survivors and soldiers give interviews on what they saw and experienced on the eastern front. Some soldiers talk quite openly about seeing Ukranian and Russian women [R]ed and killed by Hungarian and German soldiers. Human life and dignity were of no great value. There were many attrocities comitted on either side, because the civil population is always defensless against armed soldiers.

According to user @Heinisauerkraut said: My Grandpa was a military pastor with a rank of a major in the German Wehrmacht . Then | was a young boy ( about 1980 , I was 10 ) he took me and my older brother hiking , because he mapped wild graves of unknown soldiers who were fallen in the last days of the war , mostly from strafing fighter planes . He organized that they were put in proper graves in local graveyards and was later honored for this work . There he told us many stories about the war , especially in the east . Until almost the end of the war he had no own front line experience , but many soldiers came to him to confess their own experience to get some relive from the horrible things they saw or did . It took some years to really understand the things he told us . He told us , that the main difference between the campaign in France was , that you were at risk to get court martialled and shot if you stole only a chicken . In Russia you could steal , rape and murder without any punishment , because of the Führerbefehl . He told us , that most soldiers wouldn't have done it normally , but they almost did never anything against these crimes , and sometimes they helped or even joined , because of peer pressure . Some commanders forbade their soldiers to rape and kill civilians , but the only thing they could do was to put these soldiers into other units . And even the commanders who acted against rapes and murders , allowed or even encouraged to confiscate any food from the civilian population , so that they were condemned to starve to death . The result was almost the same in the end . He told us , which is now in accordance to my own experience , that were are only a few people are really evil , but on the other side there are also only a few people morally good . Most people are opportunists , and they act according to the circumstances , and if the circumstances allowing to do otherwise socially unacceptable acts , they will do it , if they get an advantage from that . So my Grandpa really know about the crimes on the eastern front , and because of that he tried not to get in soviet captivity . 1945 he was on leave at home south of Frankfurt , then he decided to dessert and hide in the woods . A thing he only told his children and later his grandchildren , and did not even write in his own memoirs . That is telling something about the German mindset , even long after the war . It was counted as more shameful to desert your unit , than to obey orders from a criminal regime . The military police told my grandmother , that if he returns he wont be shot , and in the end the pressure on was to high , and he surrendered two weeks before the Americans occupied his viage . He was court martialled ,degraded to the lowest rank and put into a penal battalion . His unit stand against the " Russians " in the area around Berlin . The Russians used loud speakers to demand the surrender , and after that someone in the unit shot the commanding officer , and the whole unit surrendered without a fight . My Grandpa was at this time quite sick from his time in the woods , and then they were inspected by a soviet female doctor , she asked him if he has children . He answered correctly that he has 8 children and showed photos of them . After that he got his release papers , and was allowed to go home . So in a lucky twist of fate , he survived his short time as soviet POW . If he were captured as military pastor in a rank of major , his fate would have been for sure much darker . I am very thankful for that experience with my grandfather . But even for me , it took some time , to remember the stories of my grandpa , then in the late 80's the discussion about the crimes of the Wehrmacht came up . This was the first time realized the full weight of the information in my head . Maybe it was so convenient to blame the SS and other nazi party organisations for all the bad things happened in the war

One almost incomprehensible(and I don't know which side or if both did this) is where they would tie a POW's hands behind his back and push him into a trash barrel and set him on fire, them put to fire out so he would suffer. They would leave the POW behind for the enemy troops to find when they advanced into the area. It was a gruesome sign of no quarter given nor taken, and you can not wonder from both perspectives why some soldiers fought to the death, they saw this stuff and were not going to let it happen to them.

Cooperate with hostile takeover or starve, maybe Gulag, maybe bullet. Yes, slavs were treated so well by their new overlords, who often weren't slavs at all.

Atombomben auf Zivilisten zu schmeißen, die Menschen aus Ostdeutschland vertreiben uvm sind schwere Verbrechen. Trotzdem haben die Deutschen immer eine Schippe an Grausamkeit draufgelegt. There was never anything downplayed about Soviet mass raping of German women and girls, this goes for mainstream historical fact in pretty much all historical scholarly circles, as far as I can tell and remember. In fact, the very opposite it is true: Soviet war rape is very much OVERPLAYED. Why? Because of ingrained Russophobia of the allied nations, both before and after Hitler. So in truth, the resultant, general effect of this personal bias is that German war rape is practically never even mentioned in mainstream historical discourse, in allied countries at least.
This is indeed fascinating, because otherwise communism in general gets a free pass for its record of totalitarianism compared to the record of the nazis/axis ones. It does make one think, it really does.

Why @HeiniSauerkraut deleted the comment he wrote. The content has no privacy issues, I decided to post it. people should know this:
My Grandpa was a military pastor with a rank of a major in the German Wehrmacht .

Partly good answer, though a breakdown of the categories would be welcome. Given the focus given, this leaves a way out. If 2 million or more women were outright [R] or forced by violence or threat into [P], then there's no argument whatsoever. Be careful not to leave a door open through conflation.
Though I presume the larger argument is that it is immaterial. Standing on a pile of genocided bodies and saying "well, at least we didn't [R] them!" does not get you credit. Especially if you'd add "We would have, but we consider them too inhuman to do so".

Anything even remotely offensive or controversial gets attacked by swarms of Twitter harpies screaming for censorship, and already left-leaning companies like Google are too quick to bend the knee and try to appease them. No slight against your dad but it is important to note the allies in liberating Western Europe had “girlfriends” in every town they liberated and systemic prostitution flourished everywhere the allies went.
One could argue the liberated countries were filled with people grateful to their savors and the relations between women and the soldiers may have been more willing, but it can not be forgotten the allure to a starved population to soldiers well supplied by rations.
I suspect the Russian numbers are also greatly understated it is well documented whole divisions of soviet troops existing solely on paper as they deserted to pillage and rape. I do not say this to defend the Nazi’s, or to tarnish the image of the soldiers who fought them but rather as a reminder that even liberators (or new oppressors in the case of the soviets) are not immune to taking advantage of a population completely under their control.

The Nazi’s behavior was so despicable it is easy to view those that came after as saints, they sadly were in many respects little different. @@TheImperatorKnight Ah, each author has their own biases. That's why it's important to read multiple books on the same topic to get a better view. Learned that in grad school and your content. Timothy Snyder blasted both regimes in Bloodlands.
I have a copy of Iris Chang's book on Nanjing, as well as one on Japanese "Comfort Women." Haven't gotten around to reading them yet. A lot of atrocities were committed in the Second Sino-Japanese War.
