“I could hear German voices around the dugout. I was afraid the Germans would [R] me. I pulled out my revolver and put the muzzle to my temple. I could already feel the touch of the steel when I realized that it was preposterous for a strong, healthy person to end her own life... I put my revolver back in its holster. Then a German officer jumped into the dugout. He started picking up map-cases, weapons and compasses. When he spotted me, his eyes widened. ‘Weib? Weib? Woman?’ he said, and made a grab at my chest. I pushed his hands away. ‘Weib,’ I said, and told him to stop touching me. I took off my map-case and handed over my revolver. He was especially pleased with the map-case.” Anna Andreyevskaya, from Bastable, “Voices from Stalingrad,” P79.

My great-grandfather went to great lengths to evacuate my grandmother(15 years old in 1941). He worked in Kharkov at factory#183(original T-34 producer) while my grandmother lived in a nearby village with his parents. When evacuation began, he left his post, drove to the village and took his daughter straight to the train station where the factory equipment was being loaded. His parents refused to leave their home and saw all the horrors of the ocupation. He died in Stalingrad, while my grandmother is still alive. To honor him, his co-workers got a pass for my grandmother to return to Kharkov via a military train, thus bypassing the strugles most civilians had in trying to return home on civilian trains.
I have read that the Germans at Kharkov would steal food from the civilians as apart of their Hunger Plan, which was to commit mass murder and genocide using starvation as their main weapon. Also an absolutely wretched man named Paul Blobel was present at Kharkov and as SS-Standartenfüherer of Einsatzgruppe C.; he was tasked with the murder of 21,685 Jews that were unable to escape Kharkov. I want you to know that your great-grandfather was indeed a hero, as he saved his daughter from the wrath of truly evil men like Paul Blobel.

@@zircon6071 there is more nuance to that, and no, Russia was not the "magical saver of the world" or anything, at best it was the USSR (germans were fighting the entirety, the other nationalities fought bravely and died for their homeland in numbers, too) and in reality it was the allies together, as soviets' production game had to be buffed up by the US in a number of ways, besides, the soviets have a list of war crimes outside germany that are harder to justify morally. I was vaguely aware of these sorts of crimes, but now I definitely know the scale. Folks are aware of what the Soviets did, folks are _acutely_ aware of what the Japanese did, but what the oh-so-noble Germans did is swept under the rug, even though they approached it from what seems to be that _stereotypical_ planned industrial perspective. What happened was well and truly beyond disgusting, and it's good to see some light shed on it.
I have read sources that had listed some of the atrocities of both the Soviets and Germans on what just soldiers did to enemy soldiers. One almost incomprehensible(and I don't know which side or if both did this) is where they would tie a POW's hands behind his back and push him into a trash barrel and set him on fire, them put to fire out so he would suffer. They would leave the POW behind for the enemy troops to find when they advanced into the area. It was a gruesome sign of no quarter given nor taken, and you can not wonder from both perspectives why some soldiers fought to the death, they saw this stuff and were not going to let it happen to them.
I think Folks are more aware about what the Germans did then what ther Soviets or the Japanese did. Pretty sure you can in every year major politican of most countries which talk about the Holocaust and the evils of Nazi Germany, the politicans which talk about the Gulags are probably mainly from Eastern Europe and i've never seen politicans talking about what Japan did to the Chinese. So i don't know in what world you're living in where Nazis are portrait as noble.
You mentioned the Cold War and I think this is a primary reason why more people know of the Soviet atrocities and not the German ones, especially in the regard. There is probably a lot that we’ve been told we should question.

There was never anything downplayed about Soviet mass raping of German women and girls, this goes for mainstream historical fact in pretty much all historical scholarly circles, as far as I can tell and remember. In fact, the very opposite it is true: Soviet war rape is very much OVERPLAYED. Why? Because of ingrained Russophobia of the allied nations, both before and after Hitler. So in truth, the resultant, general effect of this personal bias is that German war rape is practically never even mentioned in mainstream historical discourse, in allied countries at least. In Germany no one romanticizes German soldiers from world war two because many Germans feel guilty for what happened during world war two. But the thing is it's rarely talked about R generally so not much is known about what happened other than what popular film depict and that is r***ing Soviets soldiers but never German ones which is I think because directly after ww2 not much was written about R so just the story's people told each other were documented.
@ A. Peters : This might be true to some very small extend. One of the main factors however was cold war propaganda - western allies wanted to make the soviets look as bad as possible. Also I don't know what some coments here are talking about, nobody - unless real neonazis - is glorifying the Wehrmacht. The Generation of Germans born after '45 was generally very critical with its own history. The UK and France for example are starting only know to become critical with their own colonial history.
Thank you for paying attention to this subject. It is absolutely disgusting that [R-people] were let of the hook so easily in order not to hurt their feelings. I believe that if a person (or regime) is that horrible to commit mass murder on a state-organized level, a state-organized mass [R] lies directly in the path of expectation.
The west let a few nazis go because of the cold war, they thought it would be usefull to have people with experience in the esternfront just in case another öand war breaks out. All of this is unfortunate, but they did still sentence quite a few nazis to death by hanging.
Exactly. It is impossible to write a decent and sourced comment nowadays. You never know what random word will make it disappear automatically, without robots analysing its context
Given that many French regiments of the period had an official NCO position of "Regimental Pimp" who administered the regiment's stable of camp followers (renting lodgings and organising regular visits by the MO mostly), probably a lot more than you think.
It would be interesting to hear the definition of Nazi, nazbol or Neo-Nazi. What is your excuse for extensive cooperation and, ultimately, even a defense alliance with the Nazis: Such as Kurt Kiesinger, Kurt H. Debus, Hans Speidel and Helmut Schmidt. Schmidt served on the Leningrad front. To my understanding, the total number of Axis troops in the East was less than 10 million. After all, Finland was at war with the Nazi Germany until the 1950s, with actual booby trap casualties. Nuremberg trials didn't recognize the scorched earth policy as a war crime in Lapland. @ Pandacat80 Why would you ever assume that Japan invented that? If you have read any history of Warfare you'd know that the idea has existed since the beginning of time. It has always existed throughout human history. When a group of men come to conquer new territory, the first thing they do is "R" the conquered women. It's so common and predictable throughout history one would say it at the very nature of human warfare.
@@deadbutmoving “comfort women” is far different from random individual R or mass R. It‘s centrally plan/control similar to military brothels that TIK alluded to in his video. Not contesting anything you said in this video, but: among my parents and grandparents generations there was a concensus that here, in Flanders, Belgium, the US Army was much worse in terms of sexual harasment than either the occupying Germans or the British and Canadian liberators. Make of that what you will. According to my mum, once they arrived on the scene, after the war had officially ended, "it took the fun out of going out". Which might, to most modern people, would seem like an odd thing to say for an 11-year-old at the time, whilst, meantime, forgetting one was supposed to be fully integrated into adult society at the age of 14 at that time. Things have changed... not for me as I was told "playtime" was over when I turned 12, but "kids" were allowed to be "kids" for very much longer by younger parents than mine and this trend continues... further than we can allow it to go, in my not so humble opinion. If one can't stop being a child by the age of 14, there's very little hope for that person, as far as I'm concerned.
I agree, increasingly parents today and recent decades seem to be inept or uncaring to raise their children into proper maturity which has contributed to many problems in society.

It wasn't just Chinese women, Korean women had it worse as Korea was occupied by Japan for longer and could be more throughly exploited. @@TheImperatorKnight I think there's more than one motive for their censorship. US politics has an outsized effect on channels like yours because UA-cam is based here and anything to the political right of Charman Mao or Fidel Castro is at risk of getting memory holed. But there's also the push towards woke culture that's been going on for a while now (since GamerGate started, I'd argue) that got turbo-boosted after our election in 2016. Anything even remotely offensive or controversial gets attacked by swarms of Twitter harpies screaming for censorship, and already left-leaning companies like Google are too quick to bend the knee and try to appease them. Which never works of course, so the cries for censorship just get louder and shriller and they wind up sanitizing everything to avoid any kind of controversy. No slight against your dad but it is important to note the allies in liberating Western Europe had “girlfriends” in every town they liberated and systemic prostitution flourished everywhere the allies went. One could argue the liberated countries were filled with people grateful to their savors and the relations between women and the soldiers may have been more willing, but it can not be forgotten the allure to a starved population to soldiers well supplied by rations. I suspect the Russian numbers are also greatly understated it is well documented whole divisions of soviet troops existing solely on paper as they deserted to pillage and rape. I do not say this to defend the Nazi’s, or to tarnish the image of the soldiers who fought them but rather as a reminder that even liberators (or new oppressors in the case of the soviets) are not immune to taking advantage of a population completely under their control.
@@beefy1212 The difference is that the Western Allies weren't kidnapping women off the streets and keeping them in literal rape camps. They also tried (but not were not always successful) to keep a lid on rape by prosecuting those were accused of it. While it's likely that only a fraction of the soldiers who committed rapes ever wound up in a courtroom, the Western Allies at least gave it their best effort to enforce discipline and keep these assaults to a minimum, whereas Wehrmacht literally issued printed written orders saying "go wild".

The Nazi’s behavior was so despicable it is easy to view those that came after as saints, they sadly were in many respects little different. Hey TIK! I’m a huge fan. I’m reading through the pdf very slowly as I usually do. I noticed one of the works cited in the pdf was “Doll House” (Yehiel De-Nur). The author of the pdf concedes that it is a work discarded by some researchers, but I want to know why from those researchers point of view. I’m only commenting hoping for an easy way out if you might know the full story....if not, no worries, one reading always leads to the next and so on. Thanks for giving me new things to learn as always!
Yes, unfortunately this photo was probably PURPOSEFULLY used by a German-owned magazin in Poland to illustrate "brothel issue" during WW2 in Poland. While IN FACT these women are being dragged to execution in Palmiry execution place.
That is just a picture. I don't see any execution on it. In fact, the whole description is already questionable. No German insignia can be seen on the picture. It is really surprising how some of you can see a whole video out of a picture.
Well done! Rape if often a tool for psychological trauma in ethnic wars, and the eastern front was certainly that on a grand scale. I'm astonished anyone would accuse you of downplaying Soviet offenses just because you highlight the German ones. Sin and evil isn't a zerosum game, especially when that sin and evil is organized and has multiple zeros at the end of it.
One of the reason that many people haven't heard of this is that most people only learn history when the are children in school which would censor anything to bloody or sexual. The only other time most people would learn is when they watch it on a movie or TV show, people would rather watch the Kardashians than read a book.
It is OK though to have a man dressed in drag come to classroom full of small children to read them stories of transgender acceptance. Apparently, their innocence is not too fragile for that level of sexualization.
TIK "Victims, Heros, Survivors' was a very good book on a neglected subject. The only bad thing about it the author used Sven Hassel as a source. Lord Russel of Liverpool in his books on German and Japanese crimes does mention R.
Yes they didn’t hesitate to r*pe women in the german occupied territories. For instance nearly 10 million women in USSR were raped by the Wehrmacht and SS troops, most of whom were brutally tortured and killed shortly after the rape. Some of red army soldiers’ vengeful misconducts cannot be justified, but understandable given what the enemy did to their land.
My mind is actually blown by this. I’d always assumed like many that the ideology prevented this type of brutality but I stand corrected. Having read accounts of the rape of Berlin I can only imagine how bad it was on the eastern front.
That's precisely it - I also assumed that the ideology prevented it too. This is the bias in the western literature and the failure of previous historians to look into this issue.
We were taught to view us noble and moral and people from the east as Barbarians. So of course people have no problem believing stuff about Red Army, but Germans? Nah! Can't be.. they are just like us, they would never do something like that.

If the "Rape of Nanking" in 1937 is characteristic, then there are horrors beyond horrors. The problem with Japanese war crimes, is that most of them occurred in countries that either could not, or did not, document them well. The Philippines and Korea were places the Japanese are well-known to have institutionalized sex slavery. What happened in China and the rest of Southeast Asia can only be guessed at. As bad as the Germans were, at least subsequent generations have openly admitted to the crimes committed. Not so the Japanese. I do not see that attitude from their descendants. How long will the honesty last? I have no idea, and it's completely irrelevant to whether or not Germans acknowledge the crimes of the past in the present. But what I find upsetting in your comment is that you seem to be accusing me of perpetuating the lie of Wehrmacht innocence. That is totally unjustified. On a related note, the description of the state-run brothel sounds very similar to the one described in Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front". With that book being based on the author's experiences in WW1, it suggests these specific practices (not necessarily with quite such extreme levels of coercion, but given the conditions described almost certainly as a last resort) were not simply the result of one brutal, dehumanising and racist regime, but possibly a part of wider military culture which has been swept under the carpet. Disturbing.
I think that the concept of military brothels was appealing to top brass because a) it would keep the moral up, because soldiers could have sexual intercourse b) put that sexual intercourse into a "controlled" situation so that the spread of sexual diseases could be prevented by regularly testing the women c) in theory prevent the men from raping local women or fraternize with them That is my theory atleast and it reveals a very sick mindset that had some perverse inner "logic".
Lets also consider the time frame. The Germans had three years to commit those acts. From the start of the war in June 1941 until Operation Bagration in June 1944. The Soviets committed the majority from the Berlin campaign until the end of the war mid April to the first week of May. 10 million assaults over three years vs 2 million in three weeks.
You forgot to consider that the nazi's and their allies came onto soviet territory to literally enslave over 10 million people in the eastern part of the nation to work for the reich and for the local 4 million troops, and to exterminate over 100 million soviet people who they believed were Untermensh, and destroyed thousands of villages in the process. 2 million (at the most) is the least the soviets could do. Btw, the 2 million was a number that a feminist "historian" (ex-artist) who came up with that number through her "research" that was based solely on the birth rate percentage at a couple hospitals/clinics in the East German occupied zone. I agree. The Germans had a longer amount of time to commit R than the Russians. Plus, the Germans had invaded before the civilians could be evacuated. This is especially interesting considering your mentioning of "collaborator" women IE: those that sell themself "voluntarily" (and therefore become included in the 10million rape statistic). As such a situation would no doubt be the case in occupied East Germany among other former axis powers. Great video TIK, love you approaching hard topics.

According to user @Heinisauerkraut said: My Grandpa was a military pastor with a rank of a major in the German Wehrmacht . Then | was a young boy ( about 1980 , I was 10 ) he took me and my older brother hiking , because he mapped wild graves of unknown soldiers who were fallen in the last days of the war , mostly from strafing fighter planes . He organized that they were put in proper graves in local graveyards and was later honored for this work . There he told us many stories about the war , especially in the east . Until almost the end of the war he had no own front line experience , but many soldiers came to him to confess their own experience to get some relive from the horrible things they saw or did . It took some years to really understand the things he told us . He told us , that the main difference between the campaign in France was , that you were at risk to get court martialled and shot if you stole only a chicken . In Russia you could steal , rape and murder without any punishment , because of the Führerbefehl . He told us , that most soldiers wouldn't have done it normally , but they almost did never anything against these crimes , and sometimes they helped or even joined , because of peer pressure . Some commanders forbade their soldiers to rape and kill civilians , but the only thing they could do was to put these soldiers into other units . And even the commanders who acted against rapes and murders , allowed or even encouraged to confiscate any food from the civilian population , so that they were condemned to starve to death . The result was almost the same in the end . He told us , which is now in accordance to my own experience , that were are only a few people are really evil , but on the other side there are also only a few people morally good . Most people are opportunists , and they act according to the circumstances , and if the circumstances allowing to do otherwise socially unacceptable acts , they will do it , if they get an advantage from that . So my Grandpa really know about the crimes on the eastern front , and because of that he tried not to get in soviet captivity . 1945 he was on leave at home south of Frankfurt , then he decided to dessert and hide in the woods . A thing he only told his children and later his grandchildren , and did not even write in his own memoirs . That is telling something about the German mindset , even long after the war . It was counted as more shameful to desert your unit , than to obey orders from a criminal regime . The military police told my grandmother , that if he returns he wont be shot , and in the end the pressure on was to high , and he surrendered two weeks before the Americans occupied his viage . He was court martialled ,degraded to the lowest rank and put into a penal battalion . His unit stand against the " Russians " in the area around Berlin . The Russians used loud speakers to demand the surrender , and after that someone in the unit shot the commanding officer , and the whole unit surrendered without a fight . My Grandpa was at this time quite sick from his time in the woods , and then they were inspected by a soviet female doctor , she asked him if he has children . He answered correctly that he has 8 children and showed photos of them . After that he got his release papers , and was allowed to go home . So in a lucky twist of fate , he survived his short time as soviet POW . If he were captured as military pastor in a rank of major , his fate would have been for sure much darker . I am very thankful for that experience with my grandfather . But even for me , it took some time , to remember the stories of my grandpa , then in the late 80's the discussion about the crimes of the Wehrmacht came up . This was the first time realized the full weight of the information in my head .

Maybe it was so convenient to blame the SS and other nazi party organisations for all the bad things happened in the war
Where is this dude?
Another thing worth talking about: how children of German fathers and native mothers were met after the war. Answer is: sometimes horrible.
And then even denied Justice by the very European Court of Human Rights, like what happened when the Norwegian children of German fathers tried to do in 2007, after having been horribly abused, beaten and raped after the war when they were very little, some mere babies.

Partly good answer, though a breakdown of the categories would be welcome. Given the focus given, this leaves a way out. If 2 million or more women were outright [R] or forced by violence or threat into [P], then there's no argument whatsoever. Be careful not to leave a door open through conflation.
Though I presume the larger argument is that it is immaterial. Standing on a pile of genocided bodies and saying "well, at least we didn't [R] them!" does not get you credit. Especially if you'd add "We would have, but we consider them too inhuman to do so".
Sorry, but...You've given statistics about german women forced by red army. Hi TIK! I do not always agree with you but I want to thank you for this very important topic. Not many historians and history bloggers are brave enough to research and do videos about this issue. From my personal experience the Germans "love" their documentaries about soviet mass r**e in Berlin and East Germany because it makes them look better in some way. But I always thought that it was very one-sided since they never mentioned how many women all around Europe were r***d by brave German Soldiers. So thank You very much for this!
P.S. May I suggest as next topic "Crimes against Women in WW2 by US soldiers (Western allies)"?
What are you talking about? Nazi Doku are way more popular in Germany than Soviet ones, there are so many Dokus than jokes by TV Showhosts like Harald Schmidt were made about what aspect of Hitler they will make the next Doku. Maybe you should watch less SS TV if you don't want to see Dokus which portrait Nazis as "brave Soldiers" who never did anything wrong.

@ Pandacat80 Why would you ever assume that Japan invented that? If you have read any history of Warfare you'd know that the idea has existed since the beginning of time.
Not only do they deny such crimes existed, they even have the balls to behave as if you have committed a socially unacceptable breach of decorum for daring to mention the subject. Yet, they never shut up about Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
@@juliancate7089 How many generations of Germans? And will it continue? I see a tendency that the more generations have passed, the more everything shifts from "we are the criminal" to "in fact, we are the victims / we did nothing bad, it is all the Nazis to blame." The hyped myth about "pure Wertmarch" and other is clearly speaks of this process.
@@ИгорьПищулин-ю7э I agree with your observation about the toxic nature of modern culture where the guilty, the abusers, the imposers seem increasingly to claim to be the victims, but I don't see that amongst Germans when it comes to the war. In fact, I'd argue from conversations with German veterans and from the memoirs by some German veterans, that it was they - the veterans - who denied guilt and claimed to be victims, or that they were "saving Europe from Bolshevism". I am simply pointing out that Germans have acknowledged the crimes committed during the war. Are you saying that isn't true? And most of the apologists and liars that perpetuate that myth are non-Germans. You'd be amazed at the pro-German myths I grew up with as a child in America. Finally, I think it's the height of irony that a Russian is lecturing me on the subject of myth-making about the criminals claiming to be the victims. Hell, your beloved leader Putin, recently blamed Poland for the start of the war. That was the most Stalin-like thing said by a Russian leader since Stalin. Anyway, when Russians start acknowledging guilt for the crimes of the Soviet Union, then you can lecture the rest of us.
@@juliancate7089 I am not russian. I am Belarusian and Putin is not my president. I am not accusing you of anything, and I am not claiming that the USSR "did nothing wrong." But the fact is that many moments in history were too much distorted by anti-Soviet propaganda, turning in fact into a myth, which is now perceived by many as true.
@@ИгорьПищулин-ю7э Though the official position of the German Government and the academia isn't that the Wehrmacht is clean. Only the far right clings to that myth for obvious reasons. Generally the war is so far removed from the Generation that is young today that they don't really care about the war/don't know what their (great)grandfathers did because most of them did shut their mouth during the rest of their lifes. And their children and grandchildren propably didn't ak to much because knowing the truth would ruin their picture of grandpa as a nice and kind old man.
This makes me mad to think when I was young in the 60s and 70s that none of this was talked about. I thought the German war effort during that period was exemplary, I was wrong. Such evil should have never been hidden and I thank you for bring it to light. All I knew about until this video was the Soviet and Japanese crimes but I think Germans came in second to the Japanese with this subject, got to find the numbers or maybe it is not important. TIK you are right, a wrong does not mean the Soviet or Allies should do the same. Thank you.
Svetlana Alexievich's "War does not have a woman's face" is one of the most horrifying things I have ever read and the accounts from some of the interviewed women (first hand accounts, told deacades later, I know..) were seconds away from making me throw up, moved by utter disgust for the pandora's box that is this war.
That's correct. This book served as a basis for my series on Soviet women.
I bought that book a couple of months ago, i can only read little bits at a time, its horrible.
Read KAPPUT from Malaparte; As a journalist he reported the way the Germans behaved and he asked the swedish ambassador to keep as these notes as this would have meant death for malaparte if found
excellent channel dude , really love the deep dives into ww2 , would you do one on Oscar Dirlewanger ? , my God what a piece of work this guy was only found out about him recently
And The Kaminski Brigade wasn't any better than Dirlewanger's Boyos.

Friedrich Jeckeln was a big psycho too.
Disturbing.
I think that the concept of military brothels was appealing to top brass because
a) it would keep the moral up, because soldiers could have sexual intercourse
b) put that sexual intercourse into a "controlled" situation so that the spread of sexual diseases could be prevented by regularly testing the women
c) in theory prevent the men from raping local women or fraternize with them
That is my theory atleast and it reveals a very sick mindset that had some perverse inner "logic".
I forgot her name, you can look it up. The 2 million has long been debunked as there is no conclusive evidence on it that has ever been provided.
I agree. The Germans had a longer amount of time to commit R than the Russians. Plus, the Germans had invaded before the civilians could be evacuated. Surely by the time the Russians made it to Germany, those who could evacuate did evacuate leaving fewer women to be R'ed by Putin and the Russians.
It seems to be that if it was put in the context of Rs per week, the Russians would still be worse.
@@Ciborium Soviets* The soviet union comprised of over 10 republics fighting in the war. 0 clue what putin has to do with it. His parents barely survived in the Leningrad famine.
@@Ciborium Putin? I think you have your time frame messed up.
Germans occupied Soviet territory until late 1944. Even longer if you count territory that the Soviets claimed, having previously invaded it themselves when they were allied with the Nazis
And you're quite wrong about the time in which the Soviets had to mistreat German women. They conquered parts of East Prussia well before they reached Berlin. And the mistreatment didn't end when the fighting did. You're forgetting that they occupied East Berlin and East Germany
Hey TIK. Keep up the good work. You have often said that Hitler was making rational decisions during the war on the strategic level. Hitler's Ardenne Offensive Plan is often criticised by many historians as well as the German generals. Out of curiosity what is your opinion on the Battle of the Bulge and do you think Hitler was making a mistake by launching the offensive or not?
Well at that point of the war he wasn't on his best shape nor were his head
@@darkhope97 Perhaps. TIK made a video recently on Hitler's health and drug usage.
@@kaiserconquests1871 theres also a video of potential history that talks a little about it
Question TIK, do you sources RE: Soviet rap extend into the Iron Curtain? I wonder if the numbers are comparable given that the Soviet Union was in large part "occupied" for four years, whereas the figures in this video -I assume- stop after 1945?
This is especially interesting considering your mentioning of "collaborator" women IE: those that sell themself "voluntarily" (and therefore become included in the 10million rape statistic). As such a situation would no doubt be the case in occupied East Germany among other former axis powers.
Great video TIK, love you approaching hard topics.
A very heavy topic, but one that needed to be said. Thanks for your work Tik. I hope you are doing alright across the pond. Honestly, I think I picked up on this when reading Antony Beevor's book on Stalingrad back in high school. A line that said the Wehrmacht were not clean in the East. I have not read Beevor's book on Berlin yet. I think, "Ostkrieg" by Stephen Fritz brought it up too.
Beevor's "Berlin" is full of examples, but it gives the wrong impression because you're only reading what the Soviets did at the end of the war, not what the Germans did throughout the war in numerous other countries. I'm not excusing either side, just trying to balance it. Beevor's bias is blatant in both his Stalingrad and Berlin books.
Another heavy read is about the Nanjing during WW2. Not for the faint-hearted en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanjing_Massacre
@@TheImperatorKnight Ah, each author has their own biases. That's why it's important to read multiple books on the same topic to get a better view. Learned that in grad school and your content. Timothy Snyder blasted both regimes in Bloodlands.
I have a copy of Iris Chang's book on Nanjing, as well as one on Japanese "Comfort Women." Haven't gotten around to reading them yet. A lot of atrocities were committed in the Second Sino-Japanese War.
@@TheImperatorKnight What is your opinion of Iris Chang's book "The Rape of Nanking"? It's about as damning an account of military atrocities as I've ever read.
@@yohannbiimu I've read a book on Nanjing, but not sure if it was that particular one. It was a history book on the shelf in my university library. It could have been Chang's book... but either way, the book was top quality, but obviously the events were not...
@@vassilizaitzev1 Absolutely! You have to use all perspectives. That's why I still use Beevor's "Stalingrad" even though people complain that I do. And I do like Snyder, and don't think Richard Evan's criticism of him is fair.
