Such a great tune! Paul Pena wrote this song. It was so popular he was able to live off the royalties. He was almost completely blind since he was born and taught himself to play guitar. And played with BB King and Bonnie Raitt as well.. He was only 55 when he died back in the early 2000's. Excellent reaction as always.

The link was Ben Sidran, a fine musician who had played in bands with Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs. He spent a little time working as a recording engineer and he recorded the original Paul Pena track. When Paul's record company refused to release Paul's album it was circulated among musicians by Sidran who found fans like Raitt and Steve Miller who recorded songs like Jet Airliner and Gotta Move. Paul's music did eventually get released decades later and he even had a little tour and a triumphant appearance on Conan O'Brien. ua-cam.com/video/4dnGj5YF8F0/v-deo.html

So here's my little "brush with celebrity" story about Steve Miller:
Stevie "Guitar" Miller used to own a home in the Seattle area and I was part of the team that installed the computer networking backbone for his house. Only saw him a couple of times during the process but he was gracious, funny and more than generous with his time when I asked him about some of the guitars he had just sitting around the house.
There used to be a recording studio in downtown Seattle called Kaye-Smith Studios - the "Kaye" was the actor Danny Kaye who starred in many classic American comedy films. One of my all time favourites - and I'd argue one of the best American comedy films ever made - is called "The Court Jester". I cannot recommend this film highly enough! It features some great names such as Angela Landsbury (Murder, She Wrote), Glynis Johns (Mr. Banks in the original Mary Poppins), Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes) and Alan Napier (Alfred the Butler on the 1960s Batman TV show) to name a few of the actors who make this a fantastic, family friendly and timeless comedy.

There were multiple versions of this song released. As you can imagine, you can't get away with singing "funky shit" on the radio, so the edited version was changed to "funky kicks". There is also a version for "pop radio" that edited out the long guitar intro and had the lyrical edit. Thank you for selecting this version. When I saw the thumbnail, I feared the worst. That was the first greatest hits album artwork, which had the shortest, lyrically edited version. However, the one on the Book of Dreams" album is preceded by the song "Threshold", which flows right into "Jet Airliner". That is the best version, much like "Space Intro" preceding "Fly Like An Eagle".

Artist used to arrange songs in a specific order to make an album more enjoyable as a whole. They would use a slower song to set up a more upbeat song. Some would even have the whole album built around a theme, or to tell a story from beginning to end. Nowadays it’s all about getting airplay for one song to convince kids that it’s the latest hit so that they will buy it, actually making it a “hit”…at least for this week.

Paul Pena recorded "Jet Airliner" in 1973. The Boeing 707 was still a common passenger plane at that time. The 707 was in production until 1979. The song was written about Pena's flight from Boston to Montreal to play with T-Bone Walker's band. It is most likely that flight was on a 707. Today the 707 is mostly used by the US Military.
The first jumbo jet, the Boeing 747, entered service in 1970 for Pan American Airways (Pan AM). The first 747 that landed at our local Airport (YVR) was in January 1971. I remember going to the airport with the family to see the gigantic plane.
Led Zeppelin used a Boeing 720 (a variation of the 707) called the Starliner for it tours in the 70's. Since 2016 Iron Maiden, has used a 747 for their world tours, nick named 'Ed Force One'. Bruce Dickinson (Lead Singer of Iron Maiden) has a commercial pilots licence and has flown the jet. Prior to 2016, Bruce flew a Boeing 757 for Iron Maiden tours. Elvis had his own plane, and I believe KISS used the Starliner for some of their tours.

It's a testament to how much great music Steve was cranking out in that short period. The only problem I have with that comp, is that many of the songs are edited. I could understand it for the LP or cassette versions, but a CD holds almost 80 minutes, far less than the 14 songs on that comp had, but they put the same lineup on CD, when it came out. I think they released a newer comp (possibly even 2 CDs) in more recent years (and retired the old 74-78 comp), but I don't know whether they used the edited versions or not. Hopefully, they used the original LP versions.
