The Greatest Guitar Player that ever lived. My inspiration and my heart literally broke in a thousand pieces when he passed away. There will NEVER be another Eddie Van Halen. *Rest in Peace Rock Star 🙏
I’m just thankful I got to mark my #1 item off my bucket list when I got to see Van Halen & Eddie perform live. My favorite guitar player!! It was a mind-bending, life altering experience. 🤘🏼🤘🏼❤️🎸
I was 18 in 1978 when eruption came out on the 78 Vinyl LP and nobody could see what he was doing, i was a young guitar player and my guitar player buddy called me over to his house and said you got to hear this new guitar player there was no youtube or any other way to see what he was doing than to go see Van Halen in concert and you couldn't hit rewind if you missed something, this kind of playing is common now but not back then he was the first eruption almost made me give up playing because there was nobody we could go to and ask how was he doing all that so imagine how we felt back then, Eddie Van Halen wasn't from this planet is exactly what we thought, ive been trying to learn his music ever sense, R.I.P. Mr. Eddie Van Halen because not only will we never forget hell we couldn't even if we tried you were that bad ass.
I'm glad you made a video of your first time witnessing Eddie Van Halen demonstrating what true mastery of the art is all about. I'd call the looks on your face when he went into his fingertapping a tribute to just how good the man really was. Great video sir...and R.I.P. Eddie.
And another quality that made him the best was the fact that he had absolutely no ego at all especially compared to the other big names we all know.He luckily shared a huge percentage with us of what he spent his life creating. Can you imagine the 1000s upon 1000s of hours he spent in the studio over his career. He made it look so damn easy too because of just how gifted he was.I always wondered if Edward & Big Al had continued playing the instruments each had started out with when they were both kids, assuming they were still good enough to land gigs and a record deal later on in their teenage years, what do we think Van Halen would've sounded like vs the way they sounded after switching to the instruments both became rock stars playing?? How would the guitar parts have sounded with Big Al playing it and Edward playing drums??
A humble all-star. late in his career he was asked what it was like being the greatest guitar player in the world? He said he didn't know because he never met Roy Clark.
I mean it seems like just as unlikely as being a kid in the seventies and eighties and never hearing of Stevie wonder, Al green, Smokey robinson, the commodores, and Otis Redding just to name a few..
I seen Ed when we were young, back at the Whiskey a couple of times before he was even signed to a contract. Then I seen him on tour for the 2nd album Van Halen II Tour. He was at the time untouchable, and to me, he has been the greatest guitar player of them all. What a guy. RIP Ed
I'm 3 years younger than Eddie and saw them play at a high school before they did anything. I was sold. Greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived. RIP Eddie.
I saw Van Halen open for the Doobie Brothers back in the day. I had heard of them but didn't really know anything about them. They totally blew me away. Every time I see this video I expect to see Eddie spontaneously combust right on stage. This is fire!
Bruh, you just witnessed one of, if not THE GREATEST, guitarist of all time. It makes me smile to see first time reactions to this, considered one of the greatest solo guitar performances in rock music history. There will never be another Edward Lodevjik Van Halen.
Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see younger generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
Ah, this brought me back! I discovered Van Halen growing up in Southern CA. One of my classmate's older sister was supposed to be baby sitting us but she took us to a backyard party instead and there they were. I was hooked since. Fast forward years later, growing up as one of the nerdiest Asian surf girls around who was also hooked on computers, my vinyls & my walkman were Van Halen, a little bit of Journey, Zeppelin, Def Lepard, The Stones, Prince, AC/DC, Michael Jackson, Boz Scags - too many to list. When I heard Van Halen was going to be in concert locally, I ditched school for the first time in my life. They were worth getting into trouble for. I went with my other nerdy friends and we got 10th row floor seating. Eddie played Eruption and I went nuts! Eddie & the guitar are synonymous. Nobody can play the guitar like Eddie, IMHO. Some come close, but Eddie is the king of guitar playing. I now own my own tech company and I got a lot of my employees hooked on Van Halen. When we're pulling nighters, we crank up Van Halen all throughout the office a bit and I always make sure Eruption is on the top of the playlist. @da real adogg, other Eddie's guitar you should listen to, Outta Love Again, Mean Streets, Unchained & Spanish Fly. But nothing beats Eruption. Thanks for bringing me back. Rest in peace, Eddie.
Eddie didn’t invent the finger tapping, he mastered it! I’m 62 saw them in their prime in the 80’s a couple times in Seattle. R.I.P. Eddie and thanks for the great music! You should check out his son Wolfgang (Wolfie) play! His band is Tramonti, He did a great tribute to his dad that will put tears in your eyes.
Just saying. Saw Brian May do finger tapping a little in Bohemian Rhapsody video. Of course Eddie perfected it but I don't think he was the first but the best.
Got to see them on the Diver Down Tour at The Carrier Dome in Syracuse (been in Seattle for 25 years now). I was gonna say, before I saw your comment, that others got as good as Eddie with the physical skill of tapping but something just important that no one has ever approached is his soul at doing it. You can learn the skill but you either have style and passionate flair or you don't. He was like a shaman with that thing in his hands. It simply was him and he was it. Oh hey, also, Wolfie's band is called Mammoth (original VH name) or he plays as WVH as well. He hasn't been with Tremonti for a few years now.
Tremonti is Mark Tremonti's band. He was the guitarist & main songwriter for Creed. He is currently the lead guitarist for the band Alter Bridge which features Myles Kennedy on vocals & is a great guitar player himself. Mark is the singer as well as the guitarist of Tremonti. Wolfgang Van Halen has his own band called Mamoth VH. I don't think is a permanent member of Tremonti but helped them out by going on tour with them.
Get ready to be blown away. I saw them back in the day and when Edie starts off there is crowd cheering and then is goes quit for a moment because the crowd is in awe. And then the crowd goes crazy edging him on and he does not disappoint anyone. One of the best concerts I have ever seen, and I have seen all the big stars from my day. Back in the day guitarist put their cigarettes in the guitar. It was a cool thing to do.
This guy is the greatest guitar player of my generation he reinvented how to play the guitar they had to rewrite music sheets for him he invented his own pick ups he redesigned amplifiers this guy is one of the greatest guitarist to ever live.
That's not forget that he basically co-invented the locking tremolo system with none other than Mr Floyd rose, I mean technically he patented it but chose the types of results that thing needed to have based on the input of eddie..
@@davidsteinberg2120 I always thank God I was born in the aero of Van Halen because I know my watching this guy live even in his ups and downs he was still the greatest
He is the GOAT!! He built his first guitar from old music stores. They would let him take pieces. He invented that way he runs his fingers length ways to the Guitar. He made an amp the no one could plug into & get the same rights. He even played at home, taught himself a lot of stuff most don't know how to do! He has 2 or 3 pattens to do with the guitar!! R.I.P Eddie Van Halen. He was married to Valerie Bertinelli from the original One Day at a Time and Hot in Cleveland!! They have a son named Wolfgang. Eddie and Valerie remained great friends!! If I remember correctly, she may have paid for part or all of his funeral arrangements. You were the GOAT!! I ❤ Eddie. He left us way to young!!!
You have to listen to more of the music of Van Halen. Especially their song "Poundcake" where he uses an electric drill on his guitar against the strings.
Bro, I saw him do this at the Forum in L.A. back in 83. To this day i'm still utterly stunned, to point where it now brings me to tears watching these vids. Thank you for posting:)
If you ever watch the next song on this concert, I Can't Drive 55, Eddie Van Halen has to change guitars because he starts breaking strings. He is number 1 of my top guitarist. Great reaction
This was the greatest group that came out of 1978, went on to mostly control rock and roll till mid 1990s. Eddie is gone now ,bug will always be the rock and roll guitar GOAT. ABSOLUTELY DO MORE VH.
The way you felt at the end here, that’s the way everyone felt when seeing Edward play. He changed the way people approached guitar playing. 80s music would t have been the same without Ed existing.
Greatness!!!! Eddie Van Halen is made of music!! He created his own sound and no one else can imitate it…. A true Master and genuine ARTIST!🙌🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🌟. R.I.P. E.V.H.🙏🏻😔🥰😢
Seen Van Halen when nobody had ever heard of them and they only had one album. They warmed up for Black Sabbath and it was one of my favorite concerts. It was 1978 in Chicago.
One of my all time favorite guitar solos. The studio version opened their ‘78 debut album and took hard rock into a new dimension. Van Halen was the first rock band I ever saw live in ‘82.
RIP EVH…..genius on earth- he came to show us the next level guitar solos…..❤️🎼❤️saw them live twice🤘😎classical music….you heard it….on the guitar….right before he starts messing with echo pedals and the rest….😱👍🎸
I had this on video cassette shortly after it was released. To. This. Day. It still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. Eddie was my true hero. He was the reason I started playing guitar because he made it look like so much fun. (And it is.) His death hit me very hard. It makes my heart sing to see someone see/hear this for the first time. I could go on and on about this solo, which is actually a composite of many different small solos that were released over their career, but Eruption was the first one on the band's self-titled first album. If you want some good listening, start with their early releases. That was Eddie, playing a guitar with a couple of effects pedals and then straight into a Marshall stack - about as raw and basic as you can get. But their big commercial hits were the 1984, 5150, OU812, and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge albums.
Van Halen were arguably THE rock band that set the tone for the 80's rock scene, for sure! This was from 1986, where guitarist Edward 'Eddie' Van Halen was introduced by Van Halen's 2nd vocalist Sammy Hagar... Eddie Van Halen had been playing guitar and piano as a kid in California since the late 60's/ early 70's... he and his older brother Alex Van Halen (drums) started playing music together... their dad was a jazz musician who had immigrated to the US from the Netherlands. Eddie and Alex Van Halen played together in a school rock band w/ various names... In 1973, they decided instead of renting a P.A. system to play shows, they would hire the owner as their lead singer, a Jewish hyper kid named David Lee Roth... Roth was not the best singer, but he had an energetic presence and knew how to present the band live in concert... He also recognized Eddie Van Halen's talent on guitar and decided the band name should be Van Halen - it was a marquee name (like Santana... Fleetwood Mac) which could draw people to see Eddie play live. Bassist Michael Anthony was added in 1974. By 1976, Van Halen was playing the clubs of L.A. and Hollywood... Kiss bassist Gene Simmons saw the band live one night and offered to help them record demos and try get them signed to a record label and management. It took a while before any interest came... Van Halen was finally signed in 1977. Their first album in 1978 showcased songs that were guitar-oriented and w/ grooves that people could dance to in the disco era. With Eddie on guitar and David Lee Roth being the acrobatic rock star frontman, the album sold 10 million copies in the US alone... By 1984, Van Halen were selling out arenas, stars on MTV and had 6 albums that had sold millions of copies... But the band was in turmoil. Roth and the band were not on the best terms, and Eddie Van Halen began writing songs on keyboards... David Lee Roth was not happy and by 1985, he was out of the band and attempting a solo career. Without a singer but an album written, Eddie Van Halen had a phone call w/ veteran rock singer Sammy Hagar, and they decided to team up w/ Hagar becoming the new Van Halen vocalist in 1986... their 7th album '5150' went to #1 on the US charts and sold 6 million copies. Van Halen delivered 4 albums debuting at #1 on the US charts w/ Hagar on vocals, while David Lee Roth's solo career stalled by 1995. Unfortunately, tensions and disagreements between Eddie and Sammy led to the singer splitting w/ Van Halen in 1996... Van Halen briefly reunited w/ David Lee Roth, but that fell through quickly... Van Halen released the album 'III' in 1998 w/ former Extreme vocalist Gary Cherone, but that version of the band failed quickly... Van Halen reunited in 2004 w/ Hagar, but the tour was cut short because of Eddie Van Halen's addiction issues. After multiple stints in rehab, Eddie decided to bring in the long-awaited reunion w/ David Lee Roth in 2007... but his son Wolfgang Van Halen would replace bassist Michael Anthony (who went to play in Sammy Hagar's band) ... Van Halen's reunion tour was a huge financial success, but only 1 new album would be recorded in 2012... Van Halen's last tour was in 2015. After battling cancer for many years, Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020. Van Halen w/ David Lee Roth: 'Jump' ... "Ain't talkin' bout love" ... 'Dance the night away'... 'Panama' ... 'Unchained'... 'Everybody wants some!' w/ Sammy Hagar: 'Dreams'... 'Poundcake'... 'Right now'... "When it's love"... 'Seventh seal'... 'Finish what you started' ... "Why can't this be love".
Hey bro I know this video has been out for 2yrs now but just found ya today!! Now Eddie grew up poor. Everything you hear is strictly a guitar, no pedals to make the different noises nothing like that. He built his own guitars out of spare parts to get the sound he truly wanted. The one section where it sounds like a violin/ cello he figured out himself. The space noises everything. So when I say he's a GUITAR GOD I truly mean that. Many people have tried to imitate him, but never is exactly perfect. Also he played totally drunk basically all the time. Eddie is our true G.O.A.T!!!! RIP and may you be lighting up guitars in heaven for everyone!!!!!!
Also, Eddie explains in an interview that he couldn’t afford the best guitars, amps, or the electronics to make different sounds so he bought used gear and experimented. The sounds he created were unique because NO ONE had his ability nor his personalized equipment.
I saw them live three times and his guitar solo blew my mind three times. I went home thinking what the hell did I just see. I’ve been listening to rock ‘n’ roll since the 60s and I’ve never heard anybody play the guitar like that in any music genre. I’ve never heard anybody play the guitar that fast that good and that skilled. He changed guitar plane forever everybody was trying to copy his style trying to catch up to him. Too bad he had to die. But thank you for showing this video brought back lotta memories. Eric Clapton has nothing on this guy Way out of his league. I just discovered your program and I subscribed and will be listening to everything from now on love you show buddy keep up the good work take care and God bless
Any live shows they did in the late70s to mid 80s ,watch any live stuff in that era you will be amazed. I'm 60 yrs old and saw them many times in Detroit in that time, Eddie's guitar work almost hypnotized you. He was the Best.
Eddy VanHalen was the best player in the world! May GOD Rest His Soul! He is no longer with us! I went to there 1984 Concert 11rows back center stage! LOVED IT!!!!
Definitely dive into this rabbit hole!! Their 1st album was absolute 🔥🔥!! Check out Ain't Talkin Bout Love, Runnin With the Devil, Ice Cream Man, Atomic Punk!! You can't go wrong with any of their early works. ✌❤
I think most people explained it here already but Eddie Van Halen was one of the greatest musicians ever. RIP Eddie. Him and his brother Alex first learned piano and would do competions when they were younger. Eddie NEVER learned to read music but could play that guitar and make it sing. If you watch JUMP the official video you will see him play guitar and piano in it. Great video BEST solo. Watch Jump next it does have a different lead singer David Lee Roth but that man is Mr Entertainment to watch.
I’m always surprised to find reactors who have been around for a while and have a varied playlist and are still unfamiliar with Van Halen. You’ve just been introduced to the guitar legend that is one of the four members. You definitely need a rabbit hole dive because the whole band is legendary. It might be hard to find videos for some of their earliest stuff since they hit the scene in 78, but even just doing an audio reaction would be worth it. I always suggest Hot for Teacher and Panama as official videos because it really showcases the personality of the band. They were all fun and games when it came to performance, but they are one of the most musically tight bands you will ever come across. It’s just straight up, have a good time rock!
@@richardlacey4923 could be. Seeing a name pop up on a screen means absolutely nothing still tho. If they are scrolling 24/7, they see a LOT of names. Doesn’t mean you “know” anyone.
Edward Van Halen, the greatest of all time... you have to mention Les Paul and Jimi Hendrix too, but Eddie changed the way guitar sounded, the way you played, the way guitars were made a the way amplifiers were nade... oh yeah and his playing changed the way guitar music was transcribed... he was my hero back in the early 1980s when i was in highschool and to this day he will always be the benchmark in rock music and coolness... sorry for those who missed him live...i saw him a dozen times over the years and he was always beyond Brilliant... The world misses you Ed!!! A good one to watch after this...Unchained live 1981 from Oakland ua-cam.com/video/Cn8APTMyKsg/v-deo.html
That solo was an amalgamation of several songs, intors and new material. Succintly- Starting with the slow intro called 3:16 (which made it onto an album many years later), Eruption combined with parts of Spanish fly, Cathedral, intro to Mean Street, Spanish fly ending. That solo blew me away in '86 and I totally enjoy watching others react to this the same way I reacted. Eddie was #1 in my book and will always be. HE WAS Van Halen. RiP Eddie
Van Halen opened for Journey back in the early years. Eddie was beast on the guitar! I heard Steve Perry say in an interview that VH would rock out the house insomuch that it encouraged Journey to take their concert to greater heights. Iron sharpening iron! RIP Eddie ❤ 👏
Journey also tried to get Van Halen kicked off of the tour because they felt Van Halen was upstaging them. Neal Schon must have been thinking "Damn! And I thought I was good!"
When Eddie was a youngster, he bought a set of drums and did a paper route to pay for it. While he was delivering papers, his younger brother Alex would start playing those drums and became a natural talent. Their parents agreed that Eddie should let his brother be the drummer. Eddie to up the guitar to be able to keep playing. Think about what we would never have experienced, had Alex not tried out those drums.

It's worth your time. That solo is just a part of a while show!
Eddie.
This song was released when I was a teen. You never heard anything like it for my time. Mesmerizing. Poetic. Mystical. Pure!!
What’s mind blowing to me is that EVH was on the scene in 1978, active for over 40 years and died before you heard of him.
I know you’re not buying that right?
Yes! Knowing how dumbed down the hip hop generation is. Yes.
You got a point there
I mean it seems like just as unlikely as being a kid in the seventies and eighties and never hearing of Stevie wonder, Al green, Smokey robinson, the commodores, and Otis Redding just to name a few..
Ah shit… hadn’t heard that he died till just now.
RIP Eddie.
Eddie Van Halen !! The best guitarist ever! RIP Eddie!!❤
Great memories!
Awesome story. Thanks
@@russellhunt2071 Ya'll need to look up Eddies dad and Django Reinhardt.
I’m 62 bro also saw them in the 80’s playing at the Meadowlands Byrne Arena,Eddie Van Halen was 2nd to none and gone to soon sadly.
We’ll never see another one like him again. There’s no words for this man. RIP Eddie 🙏
The people know Greatness. Notice how when he starts playing, EVERYONE goes quiet.
Had a poster of him in my room in the 8os he’s the best !
In the late 70's, 80's and 90's Eddie Van Halen was the coolest guy on the planet.
The great Eddie Van Halen!!!! One of the best guitarists of all time!!! R.I.P. dear man!!!🤘🤘🤘🎵🎼🎶🎙🎧🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Bro, I saw him do this at the Forum in L.A.
Anything off their first album is gold! Start with Runnin' With The Devil.
People need to start giving his brother some love. Best drummer alive and gets no credit. 😢
Seen them 2 times 1978. Texas jam Dallas cotton bowl. 1984. Dallas. Keep on rocking my friend. TX
Saw Van Halen a few times in the 80’s and saw Eddie do this twice! It’s was awe inspiring! Talented was an understatement!
Was lucky to see Van Halen once before Eddie passed away. Legendary guitar player that will always stand the test of time. 🎸
'Everybody wants some!'
w/ Sammy Hagar: 'Dreams'... 'Poundcake'... 'Right now'... "When it's love"... 'Seventh seal'... 'Finish what you started' ... "Why can't this be love".
Saw Van Halen back in the beginning, Eddie was a ball of lightning, his solos were art for the ears, thanks Eddie.
I love VAN HALEN! Seen them seven times in Concert!
He's the GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!!
The King. I've watched this solo hundreds of times and it never gets old. Panama is a song you got to check out!
Do you know that nice guitar solo in “beat it” by MJ. Yes, it’s actually Eddie. R.I.Paradise genius Eddie!
You heard him before....He played guitar on the the song Beat it from Michael Jackson. Have a listen, you'll recognize him
Also, Eddie explains in an interview that he couldn’t afford the best guitars, amps, or the electronics to make different sounds so he bought used gear and experimented. The sounds he created were unique because NO ONE had his ability nor his personalized equipment.
E.V.H. he was the greatest guitarist in the world R.I.P
Saw them at the 1979 Texas Jam at the Cotton Bowl... kickass Rock and Roll!!!!!
The magic Fingers of Eddie Vanhalen!! Never to be duplicated May he RIP!!
That sir is the GOAT hands down RIP MR VAN HALEN
R.I.P. Eddie you are truly missed. There will never be another guitar player like him.
King Edward Van Halen...THE GOAT!
Watch Jump next it does have a different lead singer David Lee Roth but that man is Mr Entertainment to watch.
glad you checked this one out bro! great vid!
These guys scroll through UA-cam videos 24/7 he may not listen to them but he knows damn well who Van Halen is
@@richardlacey4923 could be. Seeing a name pop up on a screen means absolutely nothing still tho. If they are scrolling 24/7, they see a LOT of names. Doesn’t mean you “know” anyone.
And there’s no doubt before he recorded his reaction , he watched a few minutes of other reactions to the same video
@@richardlacey4923 why do you assume so much? If you don’t like the reactor or reactions, why not just scroll on?
Why don’t make like a tree and get out of here!
I was lucky enough to see this exact solo live in October 1986 when VH played WSU in Pullman, WA. EVH!
I'm loving watching your videos of your reaction to the music I grew up with. 70s & 80s was the best music Era of all time.
A good one to watch after this...Unchained live 1981 from Oakland

Eddy Van Halen seriously the greatest,
He is completely hammered 95% of the time! That will tell how extraordinary he really is!
You just watched one of the worlds greatest musical blessings from God. Mr. Edward Van Halen. R.I.P. Ed
The greatest there will ever be. I miss ya' Ed and I love you, brother.
Oh yeah. “Ain’t talkin’ bout love” is a great Van Halen song to react to.
Great reaction!
" Who is this guy, bro?" That makes the reaction that much better.
"Human's Being" from the movie "Twister" showcases Eddie's excellence perfectly - plus this was the peak of that band. Sammy was on fire!!!!
I just love your reactions.. wish I was 20 years younger.. lol
RiP Eddie
Edward called this style "noodling"
Sometimes I wonder if Eddie would have also been great on drums, and Alex great on guitar?
Eddie played the piano before the guitar
Alex is the elder
