A great cover by Liam of one of many fabulous songs by the late, great Stan Rogers. Lots of similarities in that they both have the gift of story-telling, great voices and give voice to their respective countries. Both gone to soon. Thank you Stan and Liam. Must be a hell of a party "up there"
Hypnotic Tranceformations - - Hypnotic?? So, so I just happened to see your comment, and followed to your web site (you look a little like someone else who has a son named Liam). So I noticed that your screen name really has something to do with your situation. I know a little about hypnosis, and it has occurred to me that probably quite a few of the approximately 60,000 dead people who got into opiate trouble could have used hypnosis for pain relief instead of chemistry, and never taken the first dose of the whatever, and might still be alive. Most of the time, alive is probably more fun than dead. If any of that makes any sense, I hope it will encourage you - better qualified than myself to comment - to find ways to agitate among the politicians etc and move toward less chemistry and more safety (better things for better living without chemistry, to plagiarize the old Du Pont slogan).
Liam Clancy!!! Words fail me. From my earliest days growing up in an Irish family the music from the homeland was a huge part of our lives. So when I first saw Liam and Tommy Makem in concert I was crying before they even started, so excited and disbelieving was I that I was actually living this moment. It was one of the pauses in life that lasts forever. After the show a friend of mine (and theirs) introduced me to them, and Liam, boyishly adorable as always, wrapped his arms around me in a huge hug -- which blessedly was recorded for a cherished keepsake -- and the first comment from envious friends was always "oh, my God! Liam Clancy hugged you!" And I'm grinning foolishly and responding "nah, he was just holding me up". I saw him many times afterwards, as well as an Irish weekend with the Clancy Brothers and forever he (and they) will be THE BEST. Real music, real talent. We shall never see their likes again.
Non optimal video and sound quality, no autotune, pure talent. Wonderful singer performing a magnificient song from a great songwriter. What else are we supposed to expect to enjoy ?
We can only try our best. This is a very old post, I know, and I am only an optimistic idiot, but for songs like this , artists like this to "pass from the knowledge of men", well I'll do what I can to keep that from happening. Teach a kid, kindle a spark, and maybe, just maybe, we all can "rise again". Bless you and your family. "Illegitimum non carborundum est". ( dont let the bastards grind you down)
And you, to whom adversity has dealt its final blow With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!
Rest in Peace Liam. Finally he's back with Tommy and his brothers together again in heaven. They must be having some craic up there! I hope my deceased loved ones enjoy the sessions!
I saw "The Lads" in 1988 in concert in Burlington VT, with three of my Best Friends. One of the Top 5 days of my 57 yr's! God Love ya Liam! I will try to come to "OUR" Island and shake yer paw and have a pint with you before next summer! You and yours have really been an influence in my life! Best, Richard Micheal Flannery Cudlipp
There will be no others like The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, who sang with such frankness every note. Music like this still exists somewhere...but it's scarce to find. But he who seeks WILL find it!
Me TOO! I just turned 56... also - just listening /watching "Pegasus-Freeborn Man..." from same concert. BLess, ya Terry.... and belated happy birthday -lol
So apropos, Terry! What a great mantra to live by. There is another one by Clancy and Makem that says "It's never too late to start living" I don't remember the name. I'm sure it's on here!
Not to diss Liam ( loved his trad. Music) but it would have been nice if he had credited Stan's writing ( The Mary Ellen Carter by Stan Rogers) An iconic Hero to many a Canadian, and loved the world over. Final chorus: "Rise again...Rise again. Though your heart it be broken, or life about to end. No matter what you've lost - be it a home, a love, a friend. Like the Mary Ellen Carter - Rise again."
Thanks ofalyconn, and to you as well, youngster! Seems like whenever I need a "shot" it comes from this song - somehow. Thanks for being the "shot of the day".
@utubalicious2 Yep he would have...that was his mothers vocation to have a priest in the Family..... But his brothers took Laim off to the Pub.. and when he arrived back in a sorry state with them, she Knew that HER vocation was not to be...
What an inspirational performer! Also alleged to be the biological father of one of America’s most divisive and vicious political commenters. I hope that one is not true. If so, that apple fell far from this kind and gentle tree!
Imagine Liam singing this with stan rogers, that’s a dream you wouldn’t want to wake from. There just aren’t inspirational men like these anymore.
This song was written by the late, great Stan Rogers. There's some good footage on UA-cam of his version which is just lovely and inspiring.
RIP two great men of music: Liam Clancy and Stan Rogers.
MickTheQuickk Rest in peace Liam
This is the only cover that catches the magic of this marvelous song.

Thanks for giving Stan kudos, whose music I love as much as Liam's. I have to admit though, I like l Stan Rogers rendition quite a bit better.
I've already decided this is the song I want sung at my funeral. Best. Song. Ever.I've named my son Liam.
You need to hear Stan Rogers sing it. By god that mans voice could boom

It tells u something about this number that Stan Rogers wrote and perfected when the great Liam Clancy takes it upon himself to use it in concert.
a legend singing a legends song
When my boys were small, they'd make me play this over and over again on our road trips.......

@@billcasey9672 It's old but I'm still here. Very well said, I couldn't agree more with you...we need to keep singing the song...
Noel Harrison taught me this song. God Bless him and Liam and especially Stan Rogers. This here, this is the power of a song. RISE AGAIN!
Heres to you Stan and Liam. You'll not soon be forgotten.
Liam died before I knew him, yet I miss him terribly
My song. Tonight it was sung at my 60th birthday. My mantra song.
And you, to whom adversity has dealt its final blow
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again!
Wise sentiments indeed!
Great song.
Smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go .... fantastic
That is show to tell a story! Clancy was the man! And thank you too, Stan.
Rest in Peace Liam.

Great song....great singer...true star!!!
Great version and tribute!
I just happen to have something in both of my eyes.

Liam Clancy: The greatest ballad singer.
--Dylan

Chrystie Castillo 200 year old alcoholic I'd the song you'd be looking for. ..
REST IN PEACE Liam,.....and Bob Dylan was right, no one could sing a ballad like you.
GOD BLESS.

He did credit him at the concert I was at, which was during this concert tour.
Thanks ofalyconn, and to you as well, youngster! Seems like whenever I need a "shot" it comes from this song - somehow.
Thanks for being the "shot of the day".
stan would be proud
A great parable for modern Ireland. God rest you, Liam.
You’ve made the Newfies proud.
❤❤❤
Does anyone have the version of Highwayman from this concert? Please share - it is incredible and hard to find!!
Thanks Vito!
Wasn't this song written by Stan Rogers?
It was indeed!
Yeah. So nice of Clancy to mention that.
A great cover by
Berthold Brecht and Stan Rogers. I think both would feel honoured by the comparison.
The Irish .. Warriors True Men Rise Again
R.I.P
Anyone know the lady playing the cello? I saw this band with him in a different concert during this tour.
Lovely, but I wish Liam had credited the great Stan Rogers.
What is the instrument the person seated in the rear is playing? Anyone know?
Mary Ellen
@utubalicious2 Yep he would have...that was his mothers vocation to have a priest in the Family..... But his brothers took Laim off to the Pub.. and when he arrived back in a sorry state with them, she Knew that HER vocation was not to be...
Amazing! This is much better than the original version! Wow.
I will share this with all my facebook contacts; to good not to.
When it comes to Mary Ellen Carter, it's chicken or the egg..... who cares two masters sang it!
Helen Lee how is it the chicken or the egg if one person wrote it and then someone covered it?? Great cover though.
Him and Luke Kelly both.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Why do so many of the Irish have little round heads and think wide mouths?
