This song is a favorite of my brother's. He has dementia now. It is one song he sings, and still knows all of the words. Every time I hear it, my heart breaks a little more." Please don't go, please don't go..." But he is going, and no way to stop it, even though he's still here physically. It is one song he has chosen for his memorial. Love this song, this rendition of it, love my brother. So sad and beautiful at the same time.

In my previous comment, I shared that my brother loved this rendition of this song. Even with dementia, he could sing all the words. Last night, his journey with dementia came to an end. I am grateful he is now at peace, and back to his whole self. Rest easy, George. We will meet again. I love you!

There was a period in the early to mid 60s when heartfelt songs like this were produced by so many artists almost all the time. I only came to appreciate them years later, as i was too young at the time. I wonder if the 60s will ever be repeated? Hope so.

My down's daughter was peeling onions for me and we were listening to this song and in no time at all she was in tears, not from the onions but crying for her best friend whom we had to leave behind when we changed countries. I'm not at all sure that she understood the words so I think that this must be a very powerful song.

Unexpectedly stumbling over this great song sung by Tom and Liam, after many years of it being such a familiar and favourite one, has stopped me in my tracks. Listening to those words and that melody anew suddenly made me sob with abandon. My dIfferent personal circumstances now give those evocative words a depth of meaning they never approached before. Every line hits home and hurts. Thank you Tom. The crying has been a good thing.

Ann Norman funny how songs like this change our perspective as we age. At 16 this was a nice folk song to sing yet at 60 it makes us think how we’ve been opened up to the vicissitudes of life. Tears my love can be rather cathartic.

It's a lesson too late for the learning
Made of sand made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turning
In your hand in your hand
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind
Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind
You have reasons a-plenty for the going
This I know this I know
For the weeds have been steadily agrowing
Please don't go, please don't go
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind
Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind
As I walked along the street alone this morning
    Without you, without you
Every hope in my heart I've been mourning
    Without you, without you
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind
Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind

It seems to me you have to go back to Greenwich Village of the 60's to get to the roots of what was then the beginning of a national recognition of folk music. There are always multiple currents of music running around us but most oof us limit ourselves in what we listen to ....... perhaps each time a musical form comes around again, "reawakening"/remembering what we had forgotten. Universal experiences/emotions can be found in folk music delivered in a delightfully melodic way.

This is among the most beautiful heartbreaking songs ever.
I notice on the side of my UA-cam screen that Peter Paul & Mary did it, so I'm sure that's where I first heard it, before I became familiar with Tom Paxton or paid attention to who the songwriters were (was there ever such a time in my life? well, yes).

My late wife and I saw Paxton perform a number of years ago (maybe at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA). He said he had composed thousands of songs in his career, but if someone asked what his favorite one was, it'd be this one.

I never heard of the Clancy Brothers or Tom Makem until about 3 years ago. They are the best. I wish I could have seen them in concert. Thank you Clancy Brothers, Tom Makem and Liam. Vaya con Dios.
