  • She went down last October in a pouring, driving rain
The skipper he'd been drinking and the mate he felt no pain
Too close to Three Mile Rock and she was dealt her mortal blow
And the Mary Ellen Carter settled low.
There was just us five aboard her when she finally was awash
We'd worked like hell to save her all heedless of the cost
And the groan she gave as she went down, it caused us to proclaim
That the Mary Ellen Carter would rise again.
Well the owners wrote her off, not a nickel would they spend
She gave twenty years of service, boys, then met her sorry end
But insurance paid the loss to us, so let her rest below
Then they laughed at us and said we had to go.
But we talked of her all Winter, some days around the clock
She's worth a quarter million afloat and at the dock
And with every jar that hit the bar we swore we would remain
And make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again.
    Rise again! Rise again!
Let her name not be lost to the knowledge of men
Those who loved her best, and were with her 'til the end
Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again.
All Spring now we've been with her on a barge lent by a friend
Three dives a day in a hard hat suit and twice I've had the bends
Thank God it's only sixty feet and the currents here are slow
Or I'd never have the strength to go below.
But we patched her rents, stopped her vents, dogged hatch and port hole down
Put cables to her fore and aft and girded her around
Tomorrow, noon, we hit the air and then take up the strain
And make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again.
    Rise again! Rise again!
Let her name not be lost to the knowledge of men
Those who loved her best, and were with her 'til the end
Will make the Mary Ellen Carter rise again.
For we couldn't leave her there, you see, to crumble into scale
She saved our lives so many times, living through the gale
And the laughing, drunken rats who left her to a sorry grave
They won't be laughing in another day.
And you to whom adversity has dealt the final blow
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.
    Rise again! Rise again!
Though your heart it be broken and life about to end
No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend
Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.
    Rise again! Rise again!
Though your heart it be broken and life about to end
No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend
Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.

This song actually makes me cry. If you're ever on board a ship remember to treat her right, every ship has a soul

Devote your soul to your ship and she will give her life to save yours. (10,000 blue water miles and brought back from the edge twice by a vessel we loved.)

The only thing I don't like about this song is that I can't sing it because I always break down crying in the middle somewhere. Thank you, Stan.

In every era there are storytellers, and more than anything, Stan was a storyteller. An honorable profession - one that he has left his mark in.

I first heard this song when working the sound board for my own father. He taught me sound engineering, and we'd been to folk songs so often, where this song was a common occurrence.
But hearing him belt it. The feeling behind "no matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, or friend!"... I stopped hiding from the 'main event' at folk sings. Discovered new magic in music.
I tell you, there is nothing like leading a group of people in song, a group large enough that would cause a fire Marshall to panic, in melody and song that you connect with, and hearing voices, guitar, violin, whatever instruments follow and support you.

This is the anthem to the resurrection of a good ship and the human spirit:
"And you to whom adversity has dealt the final blow
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again.
    Rise again! Rise again!
Though your heart it be broken and life about to end
No matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, a friend
Like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again."

Although I read a pretty fair amount of poetry, for whatever reason I have no natural ability whatsoever to recall and recite lines. But the lines you've retyped here stuck in my head instantly and after many years I can still recite them instantly. They have been a source of comfort many times over the years.

Had the privilege to hear Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem do this in concert several times - they changed the melody in the chorus slightly, but did it no harm - and it was always a joy. As it is to hear the original. RIP, Stan, Tommy, and Liam.

With Ariel Rogers' permission, I've turned Stan Rogers' epic Canadian folk song, The Mary Ellen Carter, and turned it into a 44 chapter novel. Available now at Amazon.com. Rise Again, is the story of the Mary Ellen Carter. Enjoy.

'Best version I've heard yet. Hey, if you set of what the owners said with quotation marks, it'll make more sense. So add the two like this:
Well the owners wrote her off, not a nickel would they spend.
"She gave twenty years of service, boys, then met her sorry end.
But insurance paid the loss to us, so let her rest below."
Then they laughed at us and said we had to go.
So the owners laid 'em off too. So the "loss to us" means loss to the owners and not the shipmates. I got confused there a bit otherwise. I'll bet other readers/listeners did too. 'Just a thought...

Might have, OR.....they lifted her and the company and/or Insurance carrier tried to seize her like the Atocha or the safe from the Andrea Doria! Works all been done, whether he had the bends or not, now it's OURS!
Just a supposition, because human beings can SUCK!! But if some of the crew's friends are Attorneys as well.......
Back in your holes. ya drunken Rats and laugh that off!! :D
