This song actually makes me cry. If you're ever on board a ship remember to treat her right, every ship has a soul
It gives me teary eyes as well. I've never even been on a ship!

My father used to play Stan Rogers music when I was a kid..also loved the song Barret's Privateers..brings back memories. Thanks for sharing !
I first heard this song when working the sound board for my own father. He taught me sound engineering, and we'd been to folk songs so often, where this song was a common occurrence.
But hearing him belt it. The feeling behind "no matter what you've lost, be it a home, a love, or friend!"... I stopped hiding from the 'main event' at folk sings. Discovered new magic in music.
I tell you, there is nothing like leading a group of people in song, a group large enough that would cause a fire Marshall to panic, in melody and song that you connect with, and hearing voices, guitar, violin, whatever instruments follow and support you.
I hope to find someone I love as much as these men loved their ship.

Although I read a pretty fair amount of poetry, for whatever reason I have no natural ability whatsoever to recall and recite lines. But the lines you've retyped here stuck in my head instantly and after many years I can still recite them instantly. They have been a source of comfort many times over the years.
Had the privilege to hear Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem do this in concert several times - they changed the melody in the chorus slightly, but did it no harm - and it was always a joy. As it is to hear the original. RIP, Stan, Tommy, and Liam.

A victim of smoke inhalation onboard Air Canada Flight 797 after it safely landed at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Boone County, Kentucky due to an in-flight fire.
I miss seeing and talking to Stan. However, if you've had the bends twice you better not dive again. Ever. :)

Died saving passengers on the plane they were all on when it caught fire. His light still shines brightly.
Thank you Stan for the visions and depths of perception you shared with us.......I think it was about a three year period of my life where I absorbed it all and it was thrilling!

So the owners laid 'em off too. So the "loss to us" means loss to the owners and not the shipmates. I got confused there a bit otherwise. I'll bet other readers/listeners did too. 'Just a thought...

Might have, OR.....they lifted her and the company and/or Insurance carrier tried to seize her like the Atocha or the safe from the Andrea Doria! Works all been done, whether he had the bends or not, now it's OURS!

They are both Canadian, but Stan is from Nova Scotia, while Gord is from Ontario.
