    Ok, so I just started with my ceramics again. I’m set up in my garage and have recently needed the use of a pipe. I’ve brought 3 glass ones ...I broke 2 since February. I’m down to 1. I’m not buying another one, they’re pricey! They don’t need to be all a that, they just need to be functional! So now, I can do my two favorite things since this blasted pandemic hit! New project❣️ Thank you❣️

      Either throw main form in the wheel.. or use slab method and use something cylindrical like a pvc pipe and use that to wrap your clay around, but be sure to use a peice of news paper around the pipe, and don't tape it on. That way you'll be able to remove the pipe and then gently pull the paper out as you slowly twist and pull. Make a slab base and attach it well with a lot of slip. When I make them I make the plumbing on the outside in an artistic fashion and make a hole in the bottom...e.g. I made one that was an arm and the hand was the bowl. You make another hole above the bowl if you desire a shot gun hole.

      probably standard low to midfire clay is fine, most clay is perfectly safe to use because its really just fancy dirt with water no additives usually in stoneware.
      i use cone 5 clay and i dont have any issues with that. i have heard that high fire clays can crack when exposed to direct flame which may not be great for a pipe. also plain unglazed stoneware has been used for pipes for centuries so id consider that definitely safe. as for glazes im less certain as glazes often contain many different components sometimes heavy metals for coloring so id check ingredients on any glaze you choose to use. as for “paint” under no circumstances would i paint a pipe with regular paint. most paints are not meant to be heated up and definitely not meant to be in contact with direct flame.

    I have found the PERFECT way to hollow out pipes and holes. Drill bits. The clay travels up the threads instead of pushing the clay out of the way and deforming your piece. Twist to the right in and pull straight out. Perfect circles. No sticking. Perfectly straight. Everytime. Kinda of eye ball how big you want the hole to be and measure it with a rule so u can get the correct bit size. Find the exact center. Dont eyeball it. The bigger the hole, the more noticeably off center it is of its off
    Disclaimer: i dont approve of smoking in general. The pipes im talking about are water pipes for industrial style pieces. Say for example a steampunk piece uses lots of copper piping.

      please don’t try any of what you just said. Air dry clay is not microwavable. you should also never use air dry clay for drinks, food, or to smoke out of. even with food safe glaze it’s not safe. In order for ceramic pieces to be safe to drink, eat, and smoke out of us if you fire your clay (not air dry clay) in a kiln, glaze it, then fire in a kiln again. I hope my comment was helpful and clear.

    • @eloisefischer-fortney9107

    • @eloisefischer-fortney9107
      @eloisefischer-fortney9107  4 роки тому +3

      You don't actually need to glaze on the inside because the clay is fully vitrified (not porous) after it's fired. However, some people do prefer to glaze on the inside because it tends to be a little easier to clean the pipe when it's glazed. You can simply dip the entire pipe into some glaze which should coat the inside. Just make sure the holes aren't clogged with glaze before firing, otherwise the glaze will fill in the holes and ruin the pipe!

      Eloise Fischer-Fortney is it as simple as ordering cone 10 clay online and storing it? That’s it? Or do you have to do something to the clay?

      They can just like any other pipe, but the best thing about ceramic pipes is that they clean SO much easier than glass pipes. Just some hot water and a little dish soap and it’ll all be gone in 5 seconds

      Most air dry clay is made of toxic materials like plastic. Definitely don’t try smoking out of it

      You can use any ceramic clay that gets fired to cone 5 or higher. I used a clay called BMIX with grog that fires to cone 5

      The pieces get fired in a kiln to cone 5/6 or cone 10. You can probably find a local pottery studio that can fire them for you.

      I get mine from my local clay manufacturers. They are Laguna Clay and Aardvark Clay in California. They ship worldwide, but it might be cheapest if you found someone more local to you that you can pickup from.
