      Yeah! It has worked for me in the past or you can take a little bit of wet clay and water and mix it around to make slip.

    Hi ! I'm a pipe smoker in France. Could you tell me how to clean such a pipe so that I can have the ashes out of the part below ?

    • @lowco_ceramics

      Hey! I just clean mine like I clean glass pipes. Soak them in rubbing alcohol with some salt. Should get all the ashes out.

    Since I have always smoked from already purchased pipes now that making my own im just getting the grip of the pipe mechanism, so the all the holes must be connected to the center of the pipe wich is below the bowl hole right? Like the carb hole must be conected to the bowl hole that leads also to the stem hole

    How do fire without a kiln?? And how would you paint/add color to them?

    • @lowco_ceramics
      @lowco_ceramics  Рік тому +2

      You need a kiln to fire them. I paint the top with glaze, add glaze to the inside, but I leave the bottom unglazed so it doesn't stick to the kiln when firing.

      Clay pipes that are intended for actual use aren't glazed or painted! White Earthenware clay is the safest and most common type used for smoking pipes and food contact surfaces. To change clay into a fired ceramic (pottery) to need to get to at least 1,500-1,600 degrees F. Most clays you really need to go to 1,800. Then it will be earthenware pottery or bisqueware if it is higher firing clay. Home ovens typically only go to 550 F. Above this most ovens would start to fail. Pizza ovens get to 700-800 F. This will just dry the clay. It will not be pottery (a ceramic). It will not get harder, just more brittle. It is just dry compressed powder after 500 degrees. When clay is heated enough to become earthenware it is transformed. It will never be clay again, even if you ground it to a powder. It would be what we call grog. It is sometimes used as an additive to a clay body. When clay is fired to a proper temperature it becomes a sort of stone. The chemically bound water is driven off. This is different than the water you can feel. It is water makes it clay and not rock dust. Then the clay particles begin to melt. This is changed sintering. After than it is a ceramic, not clay. @lowco_ceramics

      Kiln fired clay is the only kind of clay you should be using for pipes. Air dry clay or clay baked in the oven won't be safe for pipes.
