Beautiful collection.
It is, looking forward to the future volumes (even though they are tricky to get here in the UK). I am really glad they are finally releasing these wonderful volumes
I'm looking so forward to this, I love the Atlas era 🥰 Also very happy that there is a Joe Maneely volume coming as well! Great videos btw Andrew, I love watching you go through these iconic comic books, keep it up ! 😉You're an inspiration!
I was very disappointed when Marvel stopped their Atlas series of MMW, so this is great to finally see. Not many copies in the shops and also not many mentioned on ebay etc. The Joe Maneely one is definitely one to look out for, I am always surprised there has been no mega volume of his work anyway.
I agree love it when he sells us these horror tomes!
I love a good horror tome !
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews The EC Artists’ Library by Fantagraphics is probably my most prized possession! I should make a video about them 🤓 You’ve got a couple of interesting videos about EC anthologies, they were the best in my opinion ❤️ Too bad Wertham had to put a stop to those glorious days of horror and pulp comics in general…
The Russ Cochran books are my favourite EC books, though the Fantagraphics ones are a lot easier to read. I haven't got the full set. I did see most of the missing volumes up in GOSH but they were super expensive and also just impossible to take home.
Yes, it was sad, lots of wonderful (and not so wonderful) publishers went bust and so many titles just gone. I did enjoy the recent Riverdale season where they covered that same topic with Jughead at the writer. EC comics could have gone on and produced 100s and 100s of additional comics probably well into the sixties and beyond, though would they have kept the same quality ??? Sometimes it is good that we have that 5 years or so of classic comics to treasure and not see any real decline. Even their later issues were pretty impressive but they just didn't sell, though probably nothing to do with the quality.
I just got this in the mail. It’s a magnificent book. I really look forward to future volumes. I hope they keep this series going.
I hope so, too. I was disappointed when Marvel paused / stopped their Atlas / Golden age line of Marvel Masterworks, I think this set will be a worthy replacement for those and even better in many ways with their restoration approach and paper. Definitely hoping for series on crime (Police action etc) as well as a funny animal, romance, teen humour, etc, though I guess they will all be hard sells as the horror will always be the most popular
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews you are right about the paper. A definite improvement. I have already preordered the next three books in this series.
I have as well, there are four books in total if you also count the Joe Maneely set (+ Venus, War, SF / Rockets). I am looking forward to ones themed on Dick Ayers, Don Heck etc.
Also looking forward to books on horror, westerns, humor, funny animals, drama, crime, war, jungle, romance, espionage, medieval adventure, bible stories, navy, sports comics, witness, minor super heroines (Blonde Phantom, Sun Girl, Miss America), models, Nellie the Nurse / medical etc ... they produced a lot of comics (not all great but still interesting)
Cool! ordered one, the quality looks amazing!
It is a wonderful book, hopefully the rest of the series will be to the same standard and even better
Great review -- thanks Andrew!
Thank you and thanks for the wonderful work done on the book, it is excellent. Super start to a series that will hopefully run for many volumes.
you have some rare comics i never saw before bless you you have them
Had many more over the years but I have sold or given them away. Hope you found the video of interest
Excellent review! I bought Adventures Into Terror #4 and #6 decades ago just for the "Brain" stories by Russ Heath. I actually got to meet Russ Heath at a NYC convention many years ago. Very nice gentleman! I am surprised you received this book before I did here in the states. Mine should be arriving in about 10 days! I met Doc Vassallo at Flo Steinberg's wake in Manhattan. A fountain of knowledge! He is a doctor of dentistry and practices in Manhattan. Can't wait for the Maneely and Venus books!
Russ Heath is an amazing artist as well, got a huge IDW on him. The distribution has been odd for this book, noticed that it was released on the Fantagraphics site on October 29th. I was impatient and went up to London to just get that as I had seen the listing at GOSH. Would be great to meet Doc Vassallo, unlikely to ever happen as I'm not planning any trips to Manhattan any time soon (I would just buy too many books at the Strand ... that is still going ?) as well
In Spiderman 2 ps5, at the end of the sand man missions it shows that his daughter lives on "Van Doren Street" as in Gustav and Vivian Van Doren I assume
I have to say, no idea on that one.
Hello Andrew-- great overview!
Yes, eagerly looking forward to future volumes in the series. I was thinking when you were showing the Atlas at War book that this might be the perfect venue for Marvel to continue its Sgt. Fury books with the great John Severin run (and dare we hope Capt. Savage as well?) since there doesn't seem to be any further plans for these in the Masterworks series.
I am looking forward to the next war book as well (vol 4) in the Fantagraphics series.
Captain Savage would be a wonderful addition, can't see any reason they won't eventually release that as a MMW as it was released in 1968. I doubt if we will get a MMW for everything as there are zillions of Millies / Patsy / Linda Carter / etc that will probably never see the light of day (though perhaps in the Fantagraphics series ??? though I can't see them as a big seller). I have a couple of the Captain Savage comics, don't often see them at comic marts or particularly listed here in the UK so an epic or MMW would be great
Oooh no yet more books I feel compelled to rush out and buy. Great presentation of this book by the way.
thank you, it is a great book and one to check out !
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews £22 plus postage I’m tempted.
I bought mine for £31.99 at GOSH, was a bit impatient for the volume.
Great review as always! Looking forward to dive into the series and very excited that Fantagraphics is doing all the other volumes, definitely will be getting each release. I think I'm most excited about The Complete Web of Horror. And also can't wait for them to do Menace.
Also, I didn't realize that the Venus one will be Vol. 2, does that mean Fantagraphics will release Vol. 2 later on or should I snag a copy of MMW Venus?
I am looking forward to the web of horror as well.
Marvel released Venus vol 1 ages ago, the one from Fantagraphics will be the vol 2 that was never released so it will be the Bill Everett and Horror material that ran to Venus 18 ? 19 ? I don't know if they will be doing a book for the first part of the Venus stories or if they will overlap with any of the MMW sets for Atlas
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews The VENUS book reprints issues 10-19 to complete the run, continuing on from the Marvel Masterwork (issues 1-9). While it's not impossible we'd go back and reprint the stuff Marvel has already done, I'd imagine it's not very likely -- and certainly not in the foreseeable future.
Allan, yes, I assumed that would be the case. I know those early MMW are hard to pick up but they can still be found, going for new Atlas material would make more sense. Looking forward to the Bill Everett material, seen a number of examples of his Venus work but it will be great to get it all in one place.
They had two pages of text because that.was the bare minimum required by the post office to qualify as a "magazine," thereby entitling you to low shipping rates. Comic books were basically a scam.
Thank you for the info about shipping rates !
A great looking book so well laid out as we expect from fantagraphics, really looking forward to the Joe Maneely one.
Yes, the Joe Maneely one in particular will be a favourite. The book is very well laid out and is impressive. Still would love to see a proper 'Life Of Joe Maneely' book with his art etc (such as the one on Bill Everett etc). You would have thought something from Twomorrows ??
Yes Twomorrows would be the ideal company to do it wouldent they.
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews
Generally look forward to any book they come out with and there are still so many artists as well as comic publishers still to get a decent book or two (Gil Kane comes to mind as well but Lou Fine is another)
Yes the worrying thing of course being that as the years go by there is less chance of it happening.@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews
Yes, that is the problem which why it is great that Alter Ego etc have been getting all the interviews before the creators die, the bios for the Atlas books are all of people who have died (some recently but some quite a while ago). There still must be people around who remember these artists and writers etc and fill the book with some anecdotes (also family members as well)
Andrew as I have all the Atlas Masterworks will this book be double dipping? Great video as usual.😍
You would have to check the Atlas Marvel Masterworks to see that there are no stories from Adventures Into Terror. This includes the stories from Adventures Into Terror 1 - 8. There were 1000s and 1000s of Atlas comics published during the 50s such as terror ones, horror, funny animals, teen, westerns etc so there are many tales to go with.
I guess there maybe be some overlap when the Joe Maneely book comes out with some of his work for TOS / TTA etc but as he produced zillions of stories, who knows, again we'll have to wait for the contents list to come out.
Thank you Andrew@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews
Looks like the Maneely one is only being distributed in the US, which is a pity as that was a volume I was really looking forward to
