Thank you for the video and for your work in bringing these classic EC stories in to the hands of the fans. I requested and was bought Martian Monsters for my birthday. I will get the rest of his. I particularly love Jack Kamen’s art. His clean line is very appealing to me and yes he knew how to draw attractive women.

Kamen had kind of a Renaissance, and there is a lot of appreciation for his work in retrospect. I think when it was closer to the 1950s his accurate portrayals of suburban life seemed square, but he is definitely one of my favorites too.
I hope you're enjoying Martian Monster!

@@ecfan-addict9477 I have enjoyed reading the Martian Monster very much, so much so I have ordered Kamen’s Kalamity. As well as the great art and stories, I personally love the format of these books. Firstly, I am glad the artwork is in black and white. For me any colour gets in the way of the fantastic drawing and ink work. The introduction is great and gives me the extra information I would want. I am trying to learn more about these artists and their so any background information is very much welcome. And lastly the cover art has been chosen and designed so well and I am pleased it is in hardback.
I must admit I knew of some of the EC artists, but it was not until I saw Ed and Jim on Cartoonist Kayfabe do videos about their work, that I started to learn more about them, their work and EC Comics in general. I had not heard of Jack Kamen and when I saw his illustrations I immediately became a fan.

😎Went to a 50s retro diner that had reprint EC Comics on a spinner rack. Most were the non horror titles that had some of Jack's cover and interior work . The fanfare for the more popular artists is unquestionably deserved but my personal favorites have always been Jack , Bill Elder, George Evans and Reed Crandall.

The Grim Fairy Tales, like the “EC Quickies,” show Feldstein latching on to a repeatable gimmick for a number of stories. That impulse later mutates into the “Departments” that typify the Feldstein approach to MAD.

There are quite a few quotes from him regarding the Grim Fairy Tale era, and I source from some of them in the introduction here

@@ecfan-addict9477 I feel like the introduction of SHOCK SUSPENSTORIES at the end of 1951 marked the point at which Feldstein must have felt behind the 8-ball at all times with his insane editorial workload. And the introduction of PANIC at the end of 1953 would have been the official Bridge Too Far!

Love the channel ! May i ask your opinion on the EC Archives books from Gemstone/GC/Darkhorse ? i dont think you have done a video on them and im wondering if thats because you are among the many who were unhappy with the digital colourization. ive only ever read ECs from the Archives collections and ive never even seen an original issue in person, so i would love to hear your thoughts.

Hoo boy - there is more than a decade worth of opinions on the EC Fan-Addict Club page, I first wrote about being unhappy with the digital coloring back in 2013 when Bhob Stewart and Russ Cochran were both still alive to debate it with me! I only own two of The Archives books and it's because they were inscribed to me from the intro writers of those particular volumes (Russ Cochran and Ron Parker). With all that being said I have always been adamant that there is no bad way to read ECs, and if you are enjoying them then I'm all for it!
Since I don't own too many of them it's doubtful that I'll make a video about them though. 🤔

Far as I know, original issues tend to have surreal moody color likeness (fever dream feel) to them. I noticed this with old PS artbooks of non-EC comics. Realized original EC issue seem to have somehow same thing with using certain limited coloring to set the mood rather effectively. Newprints had whole texture newsprint feel in a way modern coloring struggle to match up with. I believe it can be possible to mix newsprint coloring and digital coloring mixed together somehow. Unfortunately most colorists doesn't seem to be interested I can tell from modern coloring.

@@ecfan-addict9477 Thanks so much for the response ! I dont use facebook but your Fan-Addict page is the most enticing reason to start ive heard yet. Dont tell my friends and family haha. I was unaware of any public discontent with the colourization until very recently, but i started collecting them when they first came out and continued when Darkhorse picked up the torch so-to-speak. I was so happy i was able to continue the collection, but I did notice a slight drop in quality at that point, and some of the colours seemed way too digital and modern, especially in terms of colour pallet and shading but it seems Darkhorse tried to do better in subsequent volumes, or at least it seemed like that to me. If you compare an earlier volume like Crypt Vol.4 with a somewhat later one like the Incredible Science Fiction collection 5 or so years later there does seem to be some improvements. But thats a purely uneducated personal opinion from a fan perspective. Im not saying the Gemstone and GC Press volumes were perfect either, cause even i could tell some colours looked off a bit and i was a dumb kid in high school, its just i REALLY noticed it in the early Darkhorse volumes especially which is a shame cause thats when they were finishing up the last 12 issues of Crypt. Parts of Vol.4 and 5 look downright bad, but i remember just being grateful to be able to read them cause they were among my favourite stories and artworks yet
Had i seen the originals i would probably have a totally different opinion, but as it stands im more than happy with the Archives collection regardless. I wouldnt have 31 volumes of them if i never but im just glad to have been able to read them all in a format close to how they were intended and i completely agree with you, theres no bad way to read ECs ! With all that being said, i wanna get my hands on an original issue now more than ever.

@crapassreality9549 Being able to read and enjoy them is the most important thing! Based on the comments of a lot of other collectors, I think you are right about the coloring it started out okay, then suffered a real drop in quality and has since bounced back. It went through a period where there were a lot of really bad looking unnecessary gradations and some really amateurish looking digital coloring. I still believe that the material transcends any of that and they will always be enjoyable to read in any format!
