fix A RATTLING brake dust shield with a zip tie

  • Sometimes these brake shield rust out and start banging on the road or on your break systems. They sound awful. You could replace the entire shroud but if you wanted to wait until next time you were actually servicing the brakes you could put a zip tie on it. It’s not mission-critical to the brakes but you certainly don’t want rattling. In this video I go through the process of how to find the rattle which is the hardest part of the fix. Then putting a zip tie by doubling up two of them and making sure it’s really tight with a pair pliers and cutting off the two ends. Pretty straightforward to fix next time we’re in working on the brakes will consider putting a new one on. Sometimes affix like this is one of those permanent temporary things

    My 2014 Impala is in now for rattling and scraping sounds. My service advisor just told me that the scraping noise is coming from the brake dust shield. They’re still working on the rattling noise. I bet it’s the dust shield for that too. Thanks for this vid!

      I have a 2014 Impala that does the same thing. Did they replace the shield?

    • @briandonald
      @briandonald 2 роки тому +1

      @@jerp270 Actually, they said they just “repositioned” it. I guess they just bent it back into place lol. I was good with that because it probably would’ve taken months to actually get the part these days. Oh, it was the brake dust shield causing both noises. It’s all good now.

    This noise sounds very similar to the noise my rear wheel is making when I apply the brakes. The sound comes and goes; and gets louder while my car is sitting at a stop light or while in park.
    I know it is something to do with the rear braking system.
    Thank you, for this video.
    Be well!

    Use a good quality zip tie. I think the black ones are rated for outdoor use.

    My rear driver's side dust shield has completely rusted off the point where it jolds onto the hub.
    I wish I noticed last month when I changed out that caliper that it was on its last legs, i would've cut it right off.
    Im gonna try and get it off without removing the wheel, its legitimately just a spinning disc behind my rear rotor that's doing nothing but scraping the rotor over and over as it turns.(ever had a bicycle and attach a playing card or crushed can to the wheel so when your wheel would spin it would hit the bike spokes? Thats what it sounds like x1,000)
    Hopefully I can remove it with snips or something from the back without even jacking the car up and removing the wheel.
    But if not I will try the zip ties.
    Only sucks that mine is completely loose and not even attached anymore, so its just hanging there.

    You might as well remove it, the whole point of shield is to keep rocks and debris off the rotor now you just made a nice wide trap to catch rocks in to rub against the rotor.

    Why the hell, car manufacturers provide dust shields ? They create a space to grow rusting, the small space prone to stuck dust there and over the time it rust more and becomes loose and creates rattling noise, then their mechanics charges 500 bucks to just diagnose the issues. This is some thing how they earn money.

    Not a good idea to whack a wheel with a mallet!! Could damage the wheel bearings .. could damage the tie rods on the steering .. could alter the wheel balance. Not good practice!

      when i worked at discount tire this is how we would get stuck tires off of cars. we had a big red rubber hammer that we would use on the rubber part. sometimes you’d have to really swing it too.

    Could I just not remove it. Is it an essential part? Mine has come loose on my BMW

    • @livefree6878
      @livefree6878  4 роки тому +1

      I thought about just removing mine, there’s a lot of dirt debris rocks and sticks that come out from the road and hit that area. In the past i’ve taken pieces like this off that shield moving parts from debris and found out the hard way on a small stick got into One of the moving parts in my engine. That little stick snapped me timing belt. Never had a problem with anything getting jammed into the brakes except once I had a plastic bag get into the brake rotor and pads. Everything worked until the brake rotor and pads cool down in the plastic between the pads fused right to the rotor. I took a hammer and chisel to free things up again. As much as I wanted to just remove that shield I felt it best to fight to keep it intact. Anyway that’s the reason that I zip tied it back on. As simple as it is I kind of feel like it’s Worth putting back on. That’s my thought.
