      Louis, I loved that plug for the store, I had no idea in addition to the value you provide by having a curated selection of stuff for making these repairs that you also are able to offer the best price is mind blowing. I have been watching for several years and seem to recall that you had tried the supply/parts thing before and failed and that you were very down on the idea for a while, I'm glad to see you try again and successfully adding value for your customers. That being said I've never bought a thing from you, just don't have a need. If only you sold booz, sex lube, adult diapers and hentai (extra tentacle).

      They won't. All they'll do is fake smile at you and point you to the NEAREST Apple store (or if they have some in stock) to buy another laptop because yours is "old, obsolete, and is trashed". That's what their planned obsolescence is all about.

      As all macbooks are propietary of Apple, they should have their own schematics that could be use to diagnose issues... but then again, Apple has this "control everything" mindset and won't hand their tech staff that info because it might get leaked. The result? Their tech support staff doesn't even know how their products work.

    I used to repair consumer electronics to the component level, and of course I'd get the customer that hooks up 14 speakers to his receiver, has shorted woofers and/or speaker wires, overdrives the unit until it's putting out a square-wave. And even after explaining this so that the customer does not make the same mistakes, they still did the same things on occasion. And of course that was my fault. Even when they would strip the stranded speaker wire OVER the unit, thereby dropping tiny pieces of wire into the unit causing it to blow all the outputs and predrivers...this too, was my fault. Some customers you cannot please.

    This issue is super common everywhere. I recently had my diesel truck not start and when it was running it would throw transmission codes and the 4x4 didn't work. Well, unplug the fan (that shorted to ground) and everything started working again. Fan control shared ground circuit with the MLPS, 4x4 and a few other things and when you have a short dragging voltage down, everything else went out of range.
    Great diagnostic Louis - I have zero intention of purchasing an Apple product but I find these repair videos addictive to watch. I'm not an anti apple elitist, I just don't have a use case for one.

      Kyle Q Apple isn't the only ones doing shit like that. But they're the only ones that do it, get defended by their fans for it, and charge shitloads of money for "repairs" that don't do fuck-all...
      But yeah, exposing Apple may well lead to people not taking it from other companies as well...

    • @drumguy1384

      With more and more things being controlled by ECUs, electrical has become the biggest issue with new vehicles hands-down. You get engines and transmissions now that will run for 200,000-300,000 miles without an issue, brakes that will go for 100,000 or more. It's all the wiring, sensors, and computer controls that break first and the symptoms can be downright maddening.
      This is one of the biggest concerns with EVs ... when literally everything is electronic and computer controlled everything is ridiculously expensive to troubleshoot and repair. Hopefully with more shops becoming familiar with component level troubleshooting like Louis does EV repairs will get cheaper, but right now it's ridiculous. (I know Louis doesn't do EV repair ... but I forsee the future of the "shade tree mechanic" being a guy like Louis who fixes EV computers instead of replacing them.)

      Kyle Q dont bother, apples laptops and desktops are great while they’re working. But almost always absolute nightmares to deal with when shit hits the fan. I only use their stuff as I like iOS and OSX as I like stable reliability for what I do. Their Laptops of recent are POS. I ended up building a custom pc with a quad os set up with hackintosh, windows 10, linux and ununtu on it.

      @@drumguy1384 It wouldn't be that bad IF manufacturers had publicly available documentation about the expected voltages and waveforms on all lines. With info like that, it would be easy to find out the problematic circuit. Even better would be a system that could monitor such errors automatically and report the results using dedicated data and power lines. However, modern engineering cannot create such things, it seems.

      Think of it this way, I build you a drill with a durable powerful motor that will last years, a chuck that can't fail, A trigger that is so solid you can't break it, and add a part on the board that when it goes fries the whole drill however it will only fail in 90% of cases right after warranty. Your going to love that drill and talk about how it will last forever and how everyone should use it. Which they will, and by the time you and the rest of the people realise the failure point you will go out and buy another one because it's the go to drill.

    • @mantisnomo5984
      @mantisnomo5984 5 років тому +2

      I have all the respect in the world for Louis, but this is nonsense. As an engineer designing a computer, you try to keep the cost down. If you can get more functionality out of fewer parts, it's a win. Adding an additional sensor chip to group the webcam separately from the temperature sensors would increase the cost of the machine -- not very much -- but significantly. It would also consume more real-estate on the logic board, more power, and require more cooling. These resources are really at a premium in these laptops. I would fire an engineer who used more hardware just to satisfy some kind of nonsensical OCD need to group his signals in a way that seems more ideal to him. If it's broke, fix it. Don't make everyone pay more so certain failures (which you have no way to know how frequently they will actually occur at the time of design) lead to some kind of soft-fail. This is not a design consideration, and Louis knows that.

    • @joer8854
      @joer8854 5 років тому +7

      You think they design and manufacture these and have no idea how often they are going to fail? Bullshit. They know the specs on how long each part should last and they know what the percentages are of when they fail. Something like 5% will fail before the end of the warranty, 15% within a year after, 35% by 2 years at which point the device will be too old for most people anyway. When the company gets pissed is when those numbers are off.

    • @mantisnomo5984
      @mantisnomo5984 5 років тому +1

      Robinson Joe, you clearly have never designed a high volume consumer item, and don't know what you are talking about. Yes, there are some published lifetime numbers, but they virtually never apply to the real world. The thing you apparently do not know is that the micro-climate -- especially the temperature -- at the precise location is quite important, and varies not only from simulations, but from device to device, and location to location at which the device is used. Your theoretical fantasy of some kind of ideal design technique has little to do with the real world. If it did, no one would ever produce a part which failed by accident.

    It has 14 sensors and although it isn’t as detailed as the Apple Service Diagnostic it allows you to see data from the sensors and works on newer MacBooks. Perhaps this could be a tool you can use to get a general idea for sensor failure on newer MacBooks?

    The SMA is communicating to the L&R Fin Stack Temp, J4002, and GPU Temp module via I2C. Sensors generally use this communication protocol because I2C only requires two lines: SDA (data) and SCL (clock). The lack of design to catch any fault in any of the slave devices is designers choice.

    I have a feeling why the ambient light sensor is on the same line as those temperature sensors is because they are worried about your laptop being stuck in a bag and turned on. If the ambient light sensor can't detect any light at all, the machine thinks it's stuck in your sealed bag and closed, so it tries to save itself by running slow and cranking the fans. The alternative would probably be to shut the machine down, but someone thought it would be better to let you use the machine a little bit vs powering off entirely. Not saying this is a great way to do it, but it's my thought as to why they tied the ambient light sensor to the temp sensors.

    • @Toby_Q
      @Toby_Q 5 років тому +3

      Yes, I know. I'm explaining why I believe it's on the same line as the temperature sensors. Because in Apple's mind, they are related, because if the ambient light sensor isn't seeing light, it means the laptop is probably closed and in a bag sealed up, so crank the fans and slow down the speed.

He burnt his hand when he pulled it out. It just didn’t slow down even though it was closed and overheating. If apple really thought of this and it’s not just a coincidence, then that’s just amazing. I don’t want my laptop exploding when it doesn’t turn off properly.

    • @andraznovak6735
      @andraznovak6735 5 років тому

      Ybalrid well you have no way of telling which sensor failed. So what could happen is that GPU would start to warm up and because you don’t know how hot it is, you wouldn’t know how much you need to cool it down and the next thing you know is your laptop burning down your house. That’s why when you don’t know the temperature, you slow down the laptop and just cool it as much as you can. Slow computer is better than a burnt down house.

      Depends on the user really, some people might get more out of working on a mac than a windows machine. For example, a dev working on a cross-platform app on the mac side will get more out of straight out buying a mac than building a pc and making it a hackintosh because that would just become their second job to work on the issues of a hackintosh.
      You might get less out of buying a mac, good for you. Doesn't mean everyone gets less out of it. As programmer7 said, people think of it as an investment. For some people its not worth it.

      Ok... if you are smart about which parts you choose to make your machine out of then it is possible to install the OS and be running at 100% in less then a day. Making a hackintosh is NOT THAT HARD, it just requires dedication and stupid amounts of effort if you are choosing parts that macOS doesn't support directly or indirectly. I even have Optimus working on my Dell Precision M6700 Hackintosh. Yes it took alot of effort on day one, but after that I haven't had any issues over the course of about 5 versions of High Sierra.

    Clearly apple only hires people with high GPA, because all the kids with high GPA have little or no experience building complex systems. I have definitely taken a GPA hit with my work on club projects at my university. But companies like apple wouldn't give my resume a look after they see my less than perfect, less than top 10 percentile, GPA.
    Hence they just get a bunch of kids that know how to cram information into their heads or hack a prof exam style to get good grades on exams. But these kids dont know how to actually engineer anything, and can't think for themselves.

      I think its a bit different. The sensors are there not to detect failure , they are there because of some usability function. IE: high temp = high RPM. But they just don't care if a failed circuit brings down the hole thing because its design to be a disposable item. They think of it as "always good". I see this all the time in another area (programming) very little attention is placed on the "non working state" until there is a problem that affects the bottom line. I don't think engineers are at fault here. I bet many of them follow Louis channel. I think they have their hand tied just as many of other people in other areas of business.
      I dont even think this is a particular issue of Apple (the engineering) apart form there prices practices, all brand do stupid engineering stuff, but because they are not HIGH price, they get away with it. People just throw away HPs and Asus laptops like its nothing because they can get another one for the price of the repair. That's why there is no repair channels dedicated to those.

Probably ok for a web site where there are continuous development. But for hardware the management has a hard deadline. And lots of hardware goofs are found when a late prototype is put in the climate chamber. And then there isn't time to redesign.

      To add to parity bit 0's response, Louis also wants to reserve promotion to products he believes are worthwhile for his usual audience and doesn't want to compromise his track record on good recommendations.

      Engineering something and repairing it are two very different things. Thats one reason why you dont see car mechanics engineering cars.
      They should still try to help him, even if its just to have positiv feedback... but thats another story how they fail to do something like that.

    • @tiber88

      I'm pretty sure he was referring to the genius engineering that Louis demonstrated here, where a single non critical components failure causes the failure of a whole machine. I had a webcam failure on my old Acer machine, sometimes it being 2-5 years old. I don't know exactly when, because it did not cause any problems.

    • @leocurious9919
      @leocurious9919 5 років тому +1

      What did he engineer? As much as i like him and what he says, i dont see that he engineered something here. He saw that the I²C bus was pulled to ground and found the cause.

      What/who the hell do you think those car engineers learn to improve from? With the way apple works, they pretty much accept zero feedback because they dont CARE about repairing their shit. Car manufacturers actually have processes for escalating feedback up the chain so their engineers can learn what worked and what didn't.

    In regards to the trackpad and the Temp sensor, you are correct in they are not associated except if during the service of the trackpad, poor ESD practices resulted in an ESD event on the board. ESD damage is often overlooked as a source of failures when a unit is being serviced. For example your bench. Wooden top, no ESD mat, no ESD wriststrap, synthetic chair. In my shop these practices are not overlooked. When is the last time you wiped down your chair with a dryer sheet? Do you always wear cotton or do you sometimes wear synthetic? In NYC without air conditioning the humidity takes care of most of these, but in cold weather and lower indoor dew points results in ESD issues.

    Love your vids. I’m a bit of a tech guy but I’m not in your field. A lot of the issues I see you deal with are the a lot like the issues I see in diagnosing problems in modern vehicles today. Funny enough we deal with a lot of the same industry type issues you deal with as well. Manufacturers making it hard to get proper resources, lack of repair information, Wrong repair information, incorrect diagrams, you name it. That’s why it pays to have a fundamental understanding of the systems you work on and not have to rely on that information as much as those who don’t.
