Why iPhone Home Screens Don’t Rotate Anymore
Вставка

- Prior to iOS 14, users with a plus-sized iPhone model could navigate their home screen in landscape mode. This was particularly helpful while using your phone in the car for navigation, since you didn’t have to worry about the phone switching between landscape and portrait every time it returned to the home screen. But Apple removed this feature from iPhone, and there are a couple reasons why.
- Наука та технологія
iPads can currently switch between landscape and portrait while rotating around the widgets, they sure know how do do it just haven’t implement it yet
To be fair ipad has a lot more screen to fit the widgets either way
Lol ipads have more screen than iPhones!
@@dropr1662 yes, but it does manage to shift apps in a way that it fits the screen rotation
Something to keep in mind is iPadOS can accommodate more icons with a wider grid iPhone doesn’t have the screen real estate go change the grid spacing
@Me for the phones right? Cuz I thought I saw that on something
They could've kept the rotating feature if you only have square widgets on your home screen. Square widgets can rotate just fine.
It's Apple. Don't expect to have options.
And even rectangular widgets could simply switch how the information was shown (the widget would be stable and just the content on the widget would suffer a change - when in landscape the information on rectangular widgets could be on vertical)
It was a gimmick anyway.
@@juizdeinternet that's a bit more difficult to do
Rotations and widgets work perfectly fine on ipad idk why they really couldn’t think of something
Another unique feature about this was being able to connect to an Apple TV via Airplay and then having the entire tv be filled up instead of partially filling the screen up like the more modern iPhones.
For some reason that only happens for me if I am using a web browser with UA-cam on my phone to AirPlay to the Apple TV . Usually switching to the UA-cam app sorts it out
I miss this feature. They need to find a way to bring it back!
Same!
Just remove the widgets, and it’ll rotate again. It’s mentioned in the video.
It was a gimmick.
@@davidjacobs6244 I don’t think so because they never advertised it like it was this life changing thing
android has had rotating widgets for this exact purpose for years now, i use it constantly on my phone.
concise, no fluff, yet thorough. Also matching visuals to demonstrate. Very good work
yet wrong. the widget point especially, the ipad does this today
@@JesseHead95 Yeah, so in short, Apple had no reason to take out landscape mode, but they did it just to have more control over the user experience.
@@JesseHead95 roasted 😂 love it
@@JesseHead95 Widgets work on iPad in both orientation because ample space on either side. The iPhone barely has any space… why is he wrong?
@@jqyhlmnp Widgets work just fine on my Samsung phone in landscape, I know they're not the same OS but I think that's a sign that Apple can make them work, but refuses to do it
It's possible that they work differently though, it seems like Apple widgets are at a fixed aspect ratio and size while Samsung widgets are more freeform
Still, there's no reason for landscape mode to be disabled nowadays, they could just rework the widget system, not the first time they've forced developers to do stuff for Apple, just look at the 32-bit app wipe of the App Store
I was just looking this up the other day because I just went back to a plus and was highly disappointed to see it’s gone.
Only the iPads can rotate cause the iPads screen is bigger

In the iOS 16 BETA I’ve been trialing on my personal device, FaceID works when the phone is horizontal. I’d really like this feature, it seems Apple isn’t reintroducing it to maintain a smooth user experience but at the cost of a practical feature I’m sure many would utilise.
Great video.
I am on iPhone 12, so I imagine this is one of those iPhone 13< situations described in the video.
@@ElijahBobingerDragonogh You should be able to download the iOS 16 BETA, resulting in your iPhone 12 having a functional horizontal FaceID unlock! Hopefully!

When I had an iPhone 6s Plus, I thought the ability to rotate the home screen was neat. The widget issue could be eventually solved. A good example is responsive web design. With HTML5 and CSS3, a flexible grid system allows you to rotate content with each individual element taking up one resizable column, making websites work in any orientation and device width.
@hit me up on @Apple explained legitimately the most annoying type of bot account. Just please shut tf up.
Yeah, but Apple does care about aesthetics, so shrinking anything to fit doesn't sound like an interest of theirs, but I did post a comment with a possible solution. Here's to hoping we see it.
This won't work since you also need to change the order of the widgets to fit on screen it is not only wrapping the elements
Welcome to another episode of "apple decides for their customers because it thinks customers can't think by themselves"
this sums it up
@Hasan Piker yet, you can still rotate the homescreen on an iPad. So much for smoother experience.
@Hasan Piker It not about rotating the home screen it about giving the option out for the customer to choose what they want
I have always been a fan of the iPad but never the iphone
I stream movies on my phone alot
Got an iphone and when watching movies when am lying on the bed I can't even lock the orientation

It’s annoying indeed, I be watching movies in landscape mode but can’t lock it into that mode on the 14 pro max. It don’t make sense.
Apple is a walled garden, easy to use but more limited.
Android and Windows are Las Vegas, there’s practically no limit to what you can find on them but it takes more effort to learn to use well. Also there’s a lot more of trial and error trying to get something to work right on your particular device.
I like a mix of Apple and non-Apple. Apple phone, Apple tablet, Windows laptop, Windows gaming PC. I want my phone to be reliable and don’t care to do too much variety on it. I want to do whatever I feel like on my laptop.
Also I find Apple handhelds link better to Windows PCs than Android handhelds link to Apple computers. So my iPad can transition to a second monitor for my laptop while getting all my notifications from both OSes on it, and then turn into an iPad and clear off my desk space when I’m done using it as a monitor.
Why can’t Face ID unlock horizontally? The 2018 iPad Pro can unlock from any orientation.
We can, if Apple let the feature happen. Apple Explained is literally just a shit mouthpiece for Apple.
IOS 16 will be able to unlock horizontally.
Because at this point, apple can really only give us incremental updates from year to year and they know this. So they roll features out at a slower pace which usually also results in the feature being nicely polished and implemented well since they weren’t rushing it out
true.. they purposely did on iphone.. not the face id problem..
With iOS 16 it’s possible
Hopefully they bring it back because in iOS 16 Face ID can be used in landscape.
Only on 13 models though...
I miss this feature with the larger iPhones. It was silly of Apple to get rid of it. The current batch of iPhones can access FaceID while being rotated.
& speaking of widgets, I hope this guy does a detailed feature of Dashboard & why Apple got rid of it.

Looking back as this now, I really missed that feature as it was generally quite convenient for me to navigate on throughout the Home Screen
I had almost every iPhone back in the day, yet this is the first time I hear about this feature
They really should bring back this feature just like the battery percentage, it's too useful to be removed
The battery percentage is back with iOS 16

@Lil' Femboy ok maybe not the X, but on my 13 mini I don't have the option in settings :(
Wait they removed the battery percentage on some models that's fucking laughable just like removing landscape feature for such dumb reasons.
Man. I was just having this discussing about missing landscape mode on the Home Screen when I had the 7+. When I use to drive for Lyft it was so useful to not rotate my screen back vertically just to access my Lyft drive account. But keep it horizontal and have a better view of maps. Because I would go out of everything just to access iTunes because I had a drivers playlist for softer songs. And when I just finished watching another video about possibly moving the Face ID to the side of ipad pros and the face the 13 pro max allows you to do Face ID when your face and phone aren’t vertical at the same time. I think it’s out already. Could be a 16 thing, but still. I thought maybe it’ll come back. The battery percentage is. To taketh away only to provideth back. Yes my child. I smiled.

We can’t open the App Library in Landscape mode too 🙂
They really need to bring this back. So many times, I curse them for getting rid of it while using my phone in landscape. It's so annoying to have to constantly switch back and forth or deal with a sideways homescreen. Especially considering the screen sizes have only gotten bigger, the phones have become more and more useable in landscape mode, with the SOLE EXCEPTION of that damn non-rotating homescreen.
I really hope that iOS 16 will have a landscape display mode. It would make life a lot easier for iPhone 13 and (soon) 14 users who want to run the phone in Landscape mode.
It works on the iOS 16 beta.
They only make it fir the pro models probably lmao
I really like this channel. He has explanation to virtually anything Apple even to small things people won’t take notice much.
As an Apple developer who uses the iOS 16 beta, there is a new feature, where if you have an iPhone 13 or newer, you can unlock your phone with Face ID in landscape mode. I can see Apple, adding the landscape mode lock screen back into play in the full release. Or at least in a later bug fix.
iPhone 13 and Newer actually
I knew the widgets to be an issue, as if you remove all your widgets on plus model iPhones with home buttons, the rotation works. I propose a solution: A switch in settings. If they flip the switch to turn on HS rotation, a pop-up could say "please disable widgets to use this" or something. Even better, if you flip the switch, give users the option to then choose locations of widgets/apps/folders per page in both orientations. that way, the user could decide where everything would slide to when rotated. all only if the user wanted to enable it, that is.
just watching your videos to listen to this beautiful background music

more landscape options are allways welcome because the screen size is big multi tasking is posible with it, some basic apps support such actions like settings, messenger and its pretty neat, i can't wait for ios 16 because 99% of the time i want to unlock my device horizontally not vertically more options in time are welcome, such as more split screen or even multi tasking opening 2 apps at once on same display landscape mode but maybe that option will be only for iphone fold.
@hit me up on @Apple explained i don't need anything, find someone else who does. im just enjoying true content on yt and this happend to be one of my fav channels.
They could just make it so that Face ID could work horizontally. This is quite ridiculous. Widgets aren’t a huge problem.
Works with IOS16 in landscape mode but just on IPhone13 and up
@@joerobinnettebiden4723 That sucks very bad for now.
Well, it's not always that simple. It maps our face at a certain orientation, with the sensors at a certain orientation, to pick up many facial features in 3D. Turning the sensor alignment sideways could very well affect it's horizontal depth perception.
@@computernerdinside it works on iPads…
@@Fetidaf Correc, but iPads also have a much larger screen and app spacing.
Finally! A video that explains this! Thank you!
FaceID in landscape was actually supported already on iPhone 11 devices because if you ever used Apple Pay, you could have the phone at awkward angles to make some contact with NFC terminal and Face ID would work often.
Once in awhile you’d have to use the PIN code but FaceID was working in landscape mode on IPhone 11 gen devices.
I think Apple just prioritized other features and bug fixes.
Yup it also works in landscape mode on my iPad Pro also.
Apple already has a restriction that you just can’t use widgets if you want depth effect Lock Screen wallpapers. They could do the same for landscape mode. Plus there’s a million ways they could solve this.
• move apps onto the next page (and so on)
• only allow landscape with square widgets
• have rectangle widgets switch to their square form
• only allow on plus/max models and scale the icon size
And so on
@ 1:42 it's actually not hard to fit all those widgets on the landscape mode. Instead of spreading out the single apps keep them in the same scare grouping. Then it fits perfectly in landscape or horizontal modes
It still works on my iPhone 8 Plus on iOS 15
One of my top requested features
I think it’s actually just because of the notch. Not necessarily the true depth camera system. It would just look odd and clunky if sideways.
Never knew face id cannot be used horizontally. It works just fine in both orientations on my iPad.

iOS 16 is bringing Landscape Face ID to iPhones. Does that mean landscape Home Screen is coming back?
No
Funny, because this feature is still present on my 14.7 8+. Oh, and it also still has Widgets on the home screen and I can still rotate it.

it does in the ios 16 beta
It always works…on iPad.
@TheInsane101 always report those comments.
It does works in iOS 16
I'm thinking it may have something to do with the orientation of the depth sensors and how it maps your face, as orienting the sensors sideways could affect perception.
The widget argument is not that great because the iPad is able to rotate the homescreen with widgets on it.
Well I can understand it with rectangular widgets, but surely if you only had square ones...

They should do the same with the lock screen, I'm in iOS 16's latest beta and that look-screen in vertical has issues. Physical, mental, spiritual, and psychological issues.

What a unique title
The funny thing is how the iPads can do landscape Face ID and have been able to since 2018.
yeah Face ID on iPad can do no matter how you rotate the device
Honestly, outside of watching videos/movies, I use my phone primarily in portrait mode. On very rare occasions, I will rotate a web page to make something bigger. Other than that, it’s a terrible experience.
I wish I could disable all rotation besides video. Its also stupid as hell that the navigation bar or whatever its called rotates with the screen. An element like that should be in the same place every time.
Nice info!
I really liked that option
0:18 Its still available as long as you dont have any widgets on your lockscreen. (I know cause i have an iphone 8 plus on ios 15) How did you overlook such a glaring error??

I still have this feature and I’m on ios 15 (iPhone 7 plus I believe), but in my opinion I’ve found landscape mode to be kinda annoying, I see that people are sad that it was removed and I understand why, but I wonder if just me that finds it annoying or others can agree
same
For me I kinda find it annoying too. But landscape helps even if you are in the car using navigation. I am using iPhone SE 2020 and the Home Screen cannot rotate. When I am using message apps. it rotates.
Looking back on my 8 plus. It was useful when you needed it. The other 93% of the time I only had landscape Home Screen on accident 😆📱
I also noticed you said ‘you believe’ it’s a 7 plus. One way to confirm it’s a 7+ is if the back is aluminum and the home key is touch only. That narrows it all the way down.
I could listen to his voice all day.
I miss this feature.
I use rotating home on my Galaxy Note all the time. My widgets all adapt to the landscape layout without issue.
Yeah. I love how Apple users just try to justify everything. They got rid of it because they decided that. Every companies does that even your beloved one: Microsoft, Google, Amazon, every one.
It’d be really nice if our phones could stop relying entirely on the accelerometer for screen orientation and start looking at our face to see what orientation it should be in.
HTC have that feature before they shut down years ago 🤣🤣🤣
I was wondering about this! I swore this was a feature but I thought I was imagining things.
I loved that feature, I used to make sure and jailbreak all my iPhone to install it the feature
New video topic: Why do cheaper iPhones use wireless charging? If they don't use wireless charging they can literally drop the price of cheaper iPhones down efficiently.
Because they use the housing of a wireless charging compatible iPhone( the 8), so adding it just costs the amount the coil cost to produce, removing the feature would mean the assembly lines would need modifying greatly increasing production costs
The se is cheap because the flagship launch of the 8 paid for the infrastructure needed to make them, meaning Apple didn’t have to pay as much of the cost associated involved in launching a new product
And when it comes to mid tier such as the iPhone13 non pro, they have to build the infrastructure regardless so the small copper coil is a tiny fraction of the overall expense, most likely costing fractions of a percentage in the overall cost to build
But both of these things work fine on the iPad. FaceID works in landscape. And widgets just reconfigure themselves and the OS stores two layouts for the icons. So in essence, they could easily bring it back in future phones. If they feel it's important enough. I personally rarely use my phone in landscape just because not everything works.
iPad displays are not iPhone displays. You cannot directly compare the two.
Great video, so interesting
Good work
Back in 2012, I had a Nokia C6-01 with symbian Belle OS, it always managed to rearrange the widgets on the home screen, what a shame Apple.
The widget argument doesn't stand. The iPad also has widgets and landscape also works
The widget argument stands with the title of the video :)
Bro, the iPad has a bigger screen. So, it has some room for the animations while rotating the iPad.
But the iPhone is just a very narrow rectangle.

iPad Pro have had landscape faceId for years now, and even widgets that work in landscape as well.
iPads also have screens upwards of 3x the largest iPhone, of course they have more flexibility. Not giving Apple excuses because we all certainly deserve landscape mode on the iPhones.

Home screen rotation is being missed, especially when you game or watch a video and just don’t wanna rotate between apps that doesn’t support land escape.
That being said the keyboard could be functional too if used one handed (from left or right) while on land escape mode not to pop up from the bottom of screen and squeeze the screen.
