I keep wanting to tell you that "tank-like thing" was originally in the early 70s movie, 'Damnation Alley' with I think Jan Michael Vincent, George Peppard, and Jackie Earl Haley.

Another great video. I grew up in Panorama City and my buddies dad at the time worked at that GM plant and every Christmas we would go to the Christmas party's there and walk around the whole planet and see the cars on the line. It was awesome. One year if u remember that TV show "The Fall Guy" Lee Majors showed up in that truck from the show and they had stunt men jumping off the roof of the GM plant. Man u brought back some good childhood memories with this one.👍
Grew up in Simi Valley and with no major mall to shop at back in the 80’s my mom would always drive us over the hill and down Topanga Blvd to that Vans store to get us a fresh pair of shoes before the school year. Of course we didn’t like them looking brand new so once my brother and i got them home we’d scuff them up and dirty them in the grass 🤷🏻♂️ Great video and great detail as always!
I also grew up in Simi Valley. 1964-70. I remember we shopped at Topanga Plaza when it first opened. Yes, I go back a bit. Before they had the freeway.
Wow, some of these locations are very close to home! My parents moved to Reseda in 1961 and I remember these places from my childhood. I visited Zig's 3 weeks ago. A waitress told me the restaurant opened in 1954 and has had 5 owners. The Bullet, Ton on a bun and chili cheese fries are my favs. You're right, those fries are huge! Adrian's was another family fav, although 20 years ago (or so) it was called Arturo's. I remember eating there on my dad's birthday. I was only a kid but I could've sworn they went off and had a creepy distinctive sound to them. Valley has change so much. Just so nostalgic seeing the before and after :( Great video by the way, keep'em coming!
Hey there I really enjoy your channel and I've been watching all of your SFV videos even though I've only been to California once. I'm a bit of an automotive historian myself so I liked the mention of the former GM plant. I live in Quebec and remember when the Camaro and Firebird production moved from Van Nuys to the plant here. Ironically they shut down the plant here too in 2002 and it too has been bulldozed and turned into a huge retail and outlet mall.
I have to comment before I even finish watching this video lol. Adrian’s is my favorite Italian restaurant! The owners are still the same original owners and are always there when I’ve gone in and are so sweet. Their lasagna is my absolute favorite 😋.
I remember the Sunshine/Keebler cookie smell! In the 1960's, My dad had a Cessna 172 that was lodged at Van Nuys Airport. I lived in Sepulveda before moving to Porter Ranch in 1965. I have a plat map from the State of California, from 1959, showing the future routing of the 405 San Diego Freeway. The State took half of our backyard to build the southbound lanes of the San Diego Freeway, just north of Roscoe Blvd. My grandmother took a picture of me at the base of the freeway, in our backyard when it opened in 1963. I was six years old! I still have drawings, as I would go out in the backyard, look up and draw pictures of the cars and trucks that I would see zooming down the freeway. I would see these shiny double tanker trucks, a lot, and on the side of the tanks they had "P-I-E" written on the side of them. In my young mind I thought, "those are the trucks that deliver all of the pies to the market, restaurants and bakeries". A few decades later, I learned that that P-I-E trucks were a fleet owned by Pacific Intermountain Express, a now defunct trucking company. Your memories are so vivid and fond of growing up in The Valley, like mine! Love your story how the shop owner gave you stuff to promote his shop....best advertising deal, for him, and you! Excellent Vlog!!!
I used to do the same thing when we would go past Keebler! We lived off of Louise, nearby when I was really small. I also remember going on a school field trip to the GM plant. Our neighbour across the street worked there.
Fun stories. Over a decade ago I went to an old hometown and even had my video camera, but I didn't think to capture recollections of memories like this.
I just have to compliment you on your filming location videos. There are a lot of filming location videos but yours are a lot better than most. I like how you go back and forth with the comparison shots. Thank you!
Yeah man, those air raid sirens are trippy, but I kind of love that they're still around for some reason. I grew up in Ventura and we had one up on the hill that they used to test out monthly (if I recall correctly) when I was a kid in the 80s. It was really kind of creepy, but also... awesome. Thanks for what's becoming my favorite YT channel, dude. Can't wait for more!
I have driven by that Adrians a million times. I have never thought to stop there. The Van's shoe.store that I remember was on Roscoe east of Balboa. I also remember a movie theater in that area. The Keebler factory oh wow, that is going back. I never ate at the Darby shop but I do remember eating at the Newberrys lunch counter. There was also a Woolworth's and a Thrifties store on Sherman Way/Ediwanda.The stores were where the 99 cent store and Goodwill are now. My mom would take me to eat Tastee Freeze after kindergarten. It was Sherman Way and I think White Oak. That is the same neighborhood as the Reseda movie theater..Do you have any 411 on why it is vacant and doing nothing after 40 years???? I tried but came up empty. My brother suggested asbestos in the building materials became something no one wants to take on. Thanks for the memories.
Oh yes, Newberrys lunch counter. In my youth my mother and I would walk from home to Reseda to go shopping. Often we ate at Newberrys. Do you remember Biff's on Sherman Way?
@@kenfrank2730 Oh wow I have not thought of Biffs in yeaaarsss.lol. Either we ate at Newberrys or Tastee Freeze..There was a dry cleaners that has been there forever just to the left of Newberrys. They closed down and sold it in the past year.I have not been by lately to see what will take its place. I used to get my hair cut down the street at Unique Coffiers. It is now a pot dispensery. @@80sLife Now you have me very curious why prime real estate has been vacant and in limbo for 50 years.. I it asbestos? Poor business? Is it haunted? It used to be a hospital during WWII.
Awesome stuff. Interesting about the air raid sirens. I don’t recall ever hearing them as a kid in the 80s, though it’s possible I wasn’t too near any where I lived.
I remember the air raid sirens going off throughout the ‘70’s as a young child in Los Angeles. We were in the foothill communities. Great video! You always jog some awesome memories…. As for the air raid sirens, I can personally attest to the fact that the monthly testing continued well into the 70s. The grammar school that I went to had one right across the street on Ventura Boulevard near the 405 and I remember it going off every month on that last Friday of the month. Those suckers were loud!
@@80sLife back in the day, every public building that had a basement also had a “fallout shelter“. Some were more elaborate than others. Yeah, a friend of mine who I went to elementary school with also watched the video. We talked last night on the phone and we reminisced about hearing that once a month. The siren was on the corner of Haskell and Ventura Boulevard.
@@80sLife at least until 1975, there was one at the old Fire Station on Balboa Blvd just north of Ventura, which is still there and vacant (there's a new Fire Station across the street) - Encino Elementary School had "duck and cover" drills and assemblies on the yard while the sirens would be going off.
You should start a series on malls in the valley in the 80s. A good amount changed to outdoor malls like fallbrook and shermam oaks galleria. Also, how about restaurants that turned into other things. Like the mcdonalds on sherman way and de soto, which is now a nursery.

Thank you for another great Valley Video. Wirechief.com will show you some cool info on the air raid sirens, including the original list of nearly 200 locations around LA and the Valley. I think the sirens stopped functioning in the early 80s as they were still being tested in the early 70s when I was at Mulholland Jr. High. None of them have power running to them anymore and the telephone control wires are mostly missing too. A big part of the early San Fernando Valley for sure.
If I'm not mistaken, Terry Gilliam (Monty Python member) worked at that G.M. plant and for some reason, I remember the Stroh's Brewing plant being there, after G.M. closed, when I first moved to the Valley, maybe I'm wrong
FYI the air horn's worked until at lease 1973 when it was duck and cover. I was in 5th grade at devonshive elementary school. And lived at one of the last orange grove's
Boy, like you said, you guys sure did eat out a lot! I wonder if anyone else remembers the Wonder Bread Bakery outlet right next to the Bud factory. They had all the treats in there! Also, being honest: I felt a bit gutted to hear that your pops passed away - especially because so many of your memory videos mention him. I didn’t see that coming. Sorry man.
Yeah, we really did eat out way too much. Probably why we were so poor in the 90s. I'm sure I've mentioned my dad's passing in other videos. Yeah, it was the most awful and life altering experiences ever. Its probably has a lot to do with why I cling to the 80's so much. Thank you!
Weird story....I was watching a video on photography..There were photos from all over the world and really amazing. They had one photo of a Hostess Bakery. Something made me do a double take to see if it was that one. I saw a freeway sign in the background. Ai pulled out a magnifying (my eyes are older)....it said 405 freeway!!! All the amazing worldly photos and this plain photo one was in the valley from 40 or 50 years ago.
@@danikeebler1662: It was the early 80’s and the aromas in that place were AMAZING, plus all the brightly colored packaging left a strong impression - it was also the only time my parents let us get treats, I guess ‘cause we were poor and it was super cheap. Any chance you can send a link to that video? Either way - THANK YOU for sharing that cool story! I was wondering if anyone would remember it…
In Pasadena, the air raid siren tests would go on into the late 1970s. When I was living in South Pasadena during my High School years in the early 1980s, the air raid sirens went off one night, and we all thought we were about to be nuked. As it turned out the sirens went off to warn about some industrial building in Pasadena (I think) that had a chemical leak.
I can personally attest to the air raid sirens going off in 1977-1979 time frame in the area of Tampa/Devonshire area of the valley. I don't recall them in the 80s.
My grandfather lived down the street from that McDonalds on Crebs and Hart. There use to be a Babyland (i think that's what it was called, it was a future store for kids or something) a few stores over. Me and my friends got kicked out of there for playing hide and seek.
It was nice to see your McDonald's still had the old look to it. I was so sad when I found out they remodeled my childhood McDonald's with the awful modern look. Interesting about the air raid sirens. Grew up in southern California myself but never encountered one until I moved to the midwest. Shame they are removing them, as they are an interesting part of our history. Wish there was some sort of movement to preserve/restore/save them.
Oh dude. I went to the GM plant as a kid and saw Corvettes and Camaros. Was so stoke to ride my BMX bike through my local Chevy dealer telling them I knew how they were made. How about when Lockheed Martin (b4 becoming Lockheed Martin) had their Skunk Works there. I have early picks showing it camouflaged during the cold war. I met Easy E at the Northridge Galleria around '91. Got my first tattoo at Skorzeny's tattoo I think on Reseda around '92 Those air raid sirens will come in handy soon when Jina and Rusha make their move
I was terrified of nuclear war as a child, too. Totally stressed out about it all the time, it was horrible. I was the only kid I was aware of who was like that. It was the 90's, and everybody kept telling me to stop worrying about it, the Cold War was over. People treated me like I was crazy. I mean, I was, but it is a legitimate fear. And that fear is so much worse as a child. I figure there's a lot of kids today who probably feel much the same way, about all kinds of things. Seems like a new Cold War is brewing, too. Definitely already happening with North Korea. Horrible prospect. I subbed for the movie location stuff, and it's cool that one of my favorite movie location dudes is a skater. I saw the little skate shop demo, maybe the first video on this channel. Also loved the Thrasher hat in one of the other videos.
Wow. I was the exact same way. I also thought I was the only one. I used to stay up at night and watch the news by myself and just sit there being terrified. Thank goodness as adults we have so much more to be scared of. Haha
I wonder if your asshole neighbors who called the cops on us for putting up Christmas lights at midnight still live there! Safari Surf. I went to middle school around the corner from the original location and used to just go in there to talk to the owner who was super cool. I think his name was Randy? Got my first snowboard there.
Haha. I don't think they do. That neighborhood has really gone downhill. Yes... Randy sounds right. Yeah I used to go in and chat with him all the time. Super nice guy
3 different styles of the air raid sirens there was .... And the one shown on Winnetka & Strathern I heard on the last Fridays of the month, while attending 3rd grade at Winnetka Elementry in 1973
I remember it so well in the early 70's it went off every last Friday of the month at 10:00am I think it ended around 1973

I was wondering if anyone would remember it…
Hahaha RAH I was wondering the same thing about the video. I will see what I can do.
Great video man, I was thinking of doing a video like that of my old stomping grounds in the OC but I figured, no one would want to see that.
That's what I figured as well. You should do it
@@80sLife Thanks
In Pasadena, the air raid siren tests would go on into the late 1970s. When I was living in South Pasadena during my High School years in the early 1980s, the air raid sirens went off one night, and we all thought we were about to be nuked. As it turned out the sirens went off to warn about some industrial building in Pasadena (I think) that had a chemical leak.
Cool Ripper shirt you're rockin. What kind of board did the store owner give you ?
A UFO. A very short lived company that never took off
I can personally attest to the air raid sirens going off in 1977-1979 time frame in the area of Tampa/Devonshire area of the valley. I don't recall them in the 80s.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️
My grandfather lived down the street from that McDonalds on Crebs and Hart. There use to be a Babyland (i think that's what it was called, it was a future store for kids or something) a few stores over. Me and my friends got kicked out of there for playing hide and seek.
Yep, they use that baby store in the movie Arthur 2
Do you have any memories at Joyce's Coffee shop Near Reseda and Rayen?
It was nice to see your McDonald's still had the old look to it. I was so sad when I found out they remodeled my childhood McDonald's with the awful modern look.
Interesting about the air raid sirens. Grew up in southern California myself but never encountered one until I moved to the midwest.
Shame they are removing them, as they are an interesting part of our history. Wish there was some sort of movement to preserve/restore/save them.
Yeah not to many old school McDonald's left. I hear ya.. as much as I used to hate seeing those sirens, now I'm sad that they are disappearing
Its too bad the Vans store is gone ...supposedly in the 60s they would sew shoes out of any fabric you brought them
They should use the sirens now whenever 📣 there's a new Corona strain on the loose. Everybody RUN.
Where's part 1
Does anybody remember the skate park on Osbourne and the 5 fwy
All 11 parts are there. Thanks for watching
omg the Vans store.. :(
🤘🏻🎱🤘🏻
Got my first tattoo at Skorzeny's tattoo I think on Reseda around '92
Those air raid sirens will come in handy soon when Jina and Rusha make their move
If I am not mistaken the actress Valerie Bertinelli's father worked at the GM plant.

Wow, that's like classified information found only in a comment section.
Wait….. so Keebler didn’t employ elves?!!! 🤯
Back when Vans were made in the USA 🇺🇸 and they were great. Now they’re crap 💩
Van nuys Hollywood Sherman oaks Sherman way
3 different styles of the air raid sirens there was .... And the one shown on Winnetka & Strathern I heard on the last Fridays of the month, while attending 3rd grade at Winnetka Elementry in 1973
