Dial A Tape was one of the first video stores my family rented from. It was originally at 7950 Laurel Canyon and can be seen in an early episode of The Fall Guy, however they then moved across the street (North/West corner of Strathern) around 1986. Like you said you would have parked curb side. I remember a carpet store next too. Then I believe it was demolished & the two story plaza that is there now facing Laurel Canyon was built. My parents still have their membership card around somewhere. I clearly remembering renting the first few WWF Coliseum home videos (early 1985) at it's original location. Hope this helps.
Im 63 lived through so many different times...looking at these videos is sad...the last throws of a empire like rome......how much has changed in such a short time
Kurt, you are correct! During the 80's and into the 90's, the Promenade mall was a higher end (older person's) mall, anchored by high end department stores like Sak's Fifth Avenue and Bullock's. Even the smaller retail stores inside were specialty stores keeping with the high end theme. There really wasn't much there for teens. In fact, during the early era the theaters and many of the restaurants did not exist until a later remodel in the 90's. In the mid 80's I would occasionally go shop there when I wanted to feel fancy lol....
@@RSX1825 the stores were I Magnin, Saks and Robinson's. Robinson's was my first job. The closest Bullock's was at Fashion Square, I worked there as well.
Mick's Subs was the bomb. Owner was not the friendliest, but the subs never disappoints. I was in the area is Dec 2023 and stopped and grabbed sub. Little did I know that it would be the last one ever. It was amazing as always. When I was in the area again a few months later, I swung by to grab a sub and was bummed to see the little strip mall was demolished and Mick's Subs was just a memory. At least I got one more in Dec. Sad its long gone.

Wow, you hit the nail on the head with this one, Kurt! Growing up in Chatsworth and having a dad that worked around the corner from the Galleria, I often visited all the malls you mentioned. The Galleria was the Super Bowl of mall wandering for me in 1987 (remember the "Aahs" gift shop nearby on Ventura?). After that, it was the Northridge Fashion Center, then Topanga Plaza. Going to the Promenade was always torture when my mom would hit Bullocks (meh), but better than nothing. My most vivid memory is briefly choking on a Gobstopper while sitting on a bench in the Promenade, lol. A few content suggestions for the Chatsworth area if you're running low; Rockpointe Townhomes are VERY original, nostalgic and LEGENDARY on Halloween. They lead to Chatsworth Park South, which has a lot of history. The Munch Box is an OG hold out. The Chatsworth Jr Baseball League fields likely also hold 80's memories for thousands of people. Thanks and keep up the great work!
@carlc5748 I remember there were recessed areas on the sides as you got deeper into the tunnel for that reason. Still, my friends and I weren't brave enough to go more than 25 yards in.
@@mattd3801 There were cubby holes inside of the tunnel, so that workers could sequester themselves there. I went in there many times, only once, at night. I even timed how long it took to reach a cubbyhole walking, about 2 minutes, upon hearing the evidence of a train coming, about 1 minute, when a train entered the tunnel, less than 30 seconds to run to the next cubbyhole. The tunnel, I think is about a mile and a half long. You can only see both openings in the daytime, if you were at the midpoint apex of it.
Saw that movie during my senior year of high school in 1983. My God it’s so nostalgic right down to the Bonnie Hayes song. Always been a Nicholas Cage Fan.
The rain fountain! Man, As a 5 year old I used to think it was some trick of light because I realized water cannot move that slowly. Turns out it was oil that slowly ran down a wire cable and was pumped back up to the top. It's mentioned in one of this channel's earlier San Fernando Valley videos.

And I believe they walked in through the old Saks Fifth Avenue. Love your videos!!

Can't believe the Promenade is almost all shuttered. I watched Avitar in 3D there in 2009 and shopped at the Barnes and Nobels store too around the same time. Not all that long ago. Crazy
Used to go ice skating inside that promenade when I was a kid. And you didn't mention all the bells that are missing from that old Robinsons. I like these nostalia tyoe vids!
I didn't know there was an ice skating rink in the Promenade. I only remember the one in Topanga Plaza. Interesting! I will admit I too almost never went to that "older person's" mall!
West Valley resident. Kinda sad to see the mall this way. My daughter actually went to pre-school at the Gymboree here. She's a teenager now. Maggiano's and The Corner Bakery are our favorite dining places here. Also went to Barnes & Noble and Starbucks countless number of times.
I saw Titanic at that AMC as well. I also remember seeing the first Fast and the Furious there and everyone was racing around the parking lot after the movie.
It's cool you can see the Top Gun Maverick display dating when the AMC 16 closed in 2022. I wonder if it's been stolen yet. It was a dying mall in the 90's inside at least but much of the stuff around the exterior and theater were doing well probably up to the p1and3mic. Too bad the promenade wasn't a well designed strip mall that could have saved a ton of space, especially after the interior was closed. The rams practice facility will not be the mall, it's across the street from Ruth's Chris and has already begun though just dirt last I saw. The mall grounds are far too valuable to ever be an NFL training facility. What it will be is a new fangled complex housing apts, hotel rooms, offices and shopping under them most likely. There may be some rams offices or facilities built in to the mall side development though. Nice video, lots of good memories. Saw so many movies in that theater and almost punched many a seat shaking asshole as seats were all connected so they shake the one next and I'd feel it. Don't think I've had mics subs but I've had Dan's and Art's, which are both still around and semi associated by former worker or relative of Dan's iirc. Last time I was at Topanga Mall was black Friday 2019. Never will I do that again. Holy crap the parking.
The Topanga Promenade gives me so many memories me and my mom used to wait for my dad after work and go to the Promenade and walk around the mall when it was dead inside only like a few people walking around but this mall was popular in the early 70s but the Westfield Topanga mall which opened up more early was more successful and more popular then the Promenade now they moved the AMC and connected it to the mall the Promenade closed down and now the plan is to make the Rams training camp there.
i lived on laurel cyn strathern wr yr standing use too be a video store i would go back in 89-94 i lived on 7750 laurel cyn and went too strathern elementary
Used to work at Warner Center & man so sad to see that so many of the places I’ve been to or just driven by are closing down. Drove by Laurel Cyn. & Victory yesterday, saw almost all the shops are closed down & the movie theater too. Only gold gym still open. Anyway nice video, will save it to watch when nostalgia hits again 😅 I knew that building from Save by the bell looked familiar. Seems they always have filming or construction going there. Hope they don’t remodel it either.
I didn't go to that mall because it had all the higher end stores I couldn't afford. it just had a whole different vibe to it, like it was for grown ups or something. at least in my experience.
That old mall parcel of land is now owned by Stan Kroenke, the owner of the LA Rams. Plans are to indeed build their training facilities and headquarters there. They currently practice in thousand oaks on land owned by Cal Lutheran University, which is way out in the outskirts, making the drive very long for players and staff.
Grant High School was used for many films and TV shows. One of the worst movies ever made "Lovely But Deadly" (it's on YT) was shot at Grant in 1981 and used students as extra's. Last 3 minutes shows the buildings you were in front of in your video. Keep up the great work Kirk!
In 4th grade, we had to write a paper starting with a starter paragraph that said, "You go to the mall and find it all boarded up." At that time, in the mid-1970s, that was unthinkable, but I wrote a story about how I had traveled into the future in my sleep, and in the future, malls were dying. Now it has really happened...
You are a futurist, like me!! In 1975, I took a pic of one of the two Porter Ranch horse statues. I took a pic of the one at NW corner of Tampa, and Devonshire, in 1975. I was 18 years old. I took the pic thinking, "one of these days in the future, this statue won't be here anymore". Both of those statues are now located at the Valley Relics Museum, by the Van Nuys Airport. I have not been there yet, but sure would like to go there! I still have my pic of the Porter Ranch horse statue, from 1975!
Did you know that the very first discotheque in the USA, was located at 7245 Canby Ave, and opened in 1975? it was located one block northeast of Sherman Way and Reseda Blvd. It was called the Silver Fox. It actually opened 2 years before the famous Studio 54, in New York. It was later sold to the actor Robert Mitchum, and was called "The Incredible Time Machine". My cousin Lon, lived in Canoga Park in the 1970's. He actually did the promotional posters for it. I am looking at the one that he gave me, right now. Lon is 82, and I'm taking over as the family historian, trying to piece together artifacts to document, quite easily these facts. Lon also did the original logo for Magic Mountain in Valencia. It was only used in 1971 and 72. His dad, 'Doc" Lemmon (pronounced La Mahn) picked the site of Magic Mountain in Valencia, gave it it's name, and was the President there when it opened on May 28, 1971. He was one of the Vice President's of Seaworld Inc. in 1969, and was tasked with locating, and naming this new theme park. I was there on opening day, when I was 13 years old. I remember when the Topanga Mall first opened in 1966. I was 9 years old. We Moved to Porter Ranch in 1965 when it was brand new. We would drive there for shopping. The Northridge Mall did not open until 1971. Keep up your great work, in your unique, and creative way in showing this places! If I was out there, it would be a pleasure to meet you, as you are barely scratching the surface, of historical, and significant events out there!
Man I loved the Promenade Mall because of the Macy’s it had. It was so peaceful to shop there especially during the Golden Years of Black Friday Shopping. I kid you not there was one Black Friday where it was just me and my sister shopping in there throughout the early morning hours of Black Friday and got all the deals with no waiting in line. 😂 I got a bunch of Calvin Klein Jeans for $3 and a couple of Oscar De La Renta shirts, sweaters and blazers for $3 - $5. No one went to that Macy’s. 🥲 I also went to that AMC theaters a lot 😂 and yup just like you that is where I saw Titanic. Didn’t know Micks was gone. Their Philly Cheesesteak was ok.
I know that you previously briefly touched on it - and it's not related to 80's stuff - but I'd love to see a full video about My Name is Earl filming locations. Such a funny show with a positive message.
I moved out of the neighborhood and last weekend went back 6 years later and was surprised to see this. It's such a nice neighborhood seems strange they would leave it vacant for so long. A lot has actually changed in that part of the neighborhood i think. I used to go here for the movies (we had a lot of options now that i think about it)
I lived in the neighborhood across Ventura Blvd near Mick's sub from around 1967 till around 2000 and Mick's was called Nick's sub back in the 70s. The whole area is not the same anymore.....
We lived in Chatsworth in the late 80s to early 90s. Thanks for your videos. But wow those are some crazy gas prices I saw in the background shots. We live in normal America now.
The movie theatre you said you could see Rocky Horror Picture Show, could you also see Heavy Metal or Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation? We used to have a theater here in Victoria that showed those movies!
Rad T-shirt awesome bro , I’m planning on checking out the filming locations in Calgary and Cochrane , Alberta 🇨🇦 cheers bud , I enjoy you and Scott’s channels , I’m not really a big fan of the rest of the people doing the same thing, keep up the good work
THAT is one of the reasons I knew it was on the other block. Because I remember it being right across from a fitness place. I thought it was a gym... close enough. Thank you for giving me the name. One step closer!
@@80sLife yes, it was a gym that had indoor racquet ball courts and the tv show Hart to Hart staring Robert Wagner and Stephenie powers were filmed there on some episodes.
My wife would remember better, but I think we mainly went to the Promenade for the movie theater. Like you, it was mainly Northridge or Topanga. Sometimes Fallbrook or the Sherman Oaks Galleria.
The promenade mall was the spot when I was a teenager. It’s probably because it was less popular, but living down the street at the Warner center meant that it gave us a down the street spot to go and smoke a bowl (talking 420 here! Things are out of control these days, why I just wanted to clear that up!)
I used to go to mix subs when it was next to pup and taco across the street from denny's Reseda and Ventura boulevard I live to etiwanda it was really cool growing up back then the ice skating rink top Reseda I can go ride my motorcycle get grounded from my father when he found out I took it out can ice skating at the ice skating rink skating at skate across on Reseda boulevard I still have my ID does 164 of my picture I'm sure you remember that the monster ball going down the ramp in the first one I'll never forget those good times
We moved to the SF Valley when I was small kid. While living there, we witnessed the fields, and orange groves get destroyed one by one. Shooping malls, and housing tract were put up in their place. I went back and visited to see my parents after I had moved away to Northern California. I took a day and drove around, and all the old schools I went to were trashed! The valley is now a cesspool of crime, porn, and gangs. It's all ruined. A friend of mine whom I knew when I was still living there, has fled the area, and moved to Santa Clarita. Santa Clarita is now become crowded, dirty, drug filled, homeless encampments, A huge city. It used to be really nice at one point. I will never live there again.
Kroenke, owner of the Rams, bought that shopping center along with the old Blue Cross building across the street. They are going to build the LA Rams practice facility there. Not sure why they selected that spot since it’s the hottest part of the valley in the summer and early fall. Only thought is they want to commercialize the facility and generate revenue from it. The BlueCross parking lot has already been demolished. Anyway, my two cents.
Don't stop what you are doing!
History will thank you for it.
I promise you.
That's wild to think. Thank you!

I agree, and just having places to actually go is totally becoming obsolete. All we do is stay home.
All those malls have been replaced with warehouses for Amazon I guess.

Considering the next generation is basically 20 or less, then yes obviously. Lol.

It’s officially going to be the Rams headquarters/practice facility. One of these days they will actually start work on it
Thank u so
West Valley resident.
The Barn is right around the corner from my house. I took the kids in there for bunk beds when they were little.
It’s sad to see what has happened to all these malls across the country. I miss Frys Electronics too. 😢
Fry’s was awesome. It sucked that it kept getting smaller and smaller
I opened my checking account at the BofA in Warner Center in the 80’s. I still have it.
I went to grant high school and lived on strathern and laurel cyn ❤ lots of memories
You are correct. Stan Kronke purchased this mall.
I know that you previously briefly touched on it - and it's not related to 80's stuff - but I'd love to see a full video about My Name is Earl filming locations. Such a funny show with a positive message.
Purchased a rocking chair and secretary at the Barn!
👀gotta luv❤ them 80's...DiCaprio did a knock job in Titanic!💯👍✌!
I’m starting to cry now a little just at the mention of Titanic.
We lived in Chatsworth in the late 80s to early 90s. Thanks for your videos. But wow those are some crazy gas prices I saw in the background shots. We live in normal America now.
I've been to The Barn a couple of times.
plus lived at that dennys by taft, would go there after all the punk shows in hollywood.
The movie theatre you said you could see Rocky Horror Picture Show, could you also see Heavy Metal or Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation? We used to have a theater here in Victoria that showed those movies!
Funny to think we might’ve seen Titanic in The Promenade around the same time. I also went against my will
You have a rad shirt on. ❤❤❤
Rad T-shirt awesome bro , I’m planning on checking out the filming locations in Calgary and Cochrane , Alberta 🇨🇦 cheers bud , I enjoy you and Scott’s channels , I’m not really a big fan of the rest of the people doing the same thing, keep up the good work
Warlord Clothing sells them.
Across the dial tape store was a fitness facility called Rocky’s racket world.
I posted above and emailed you where Dial A Tape was located @@80sLife
NIGHTMARES 1983
Sad to see how civilization has been destroyed.
A real bummer.
The Internet killed the mall. Ironically we're watching this video via that Internet.
And you’re a huge part of it. Congrats.
@@joes.4149 thank you. I do my part!
The Ram's practice facility is supposed to be built where the old Rocketdyne plant was behind the Topanga Mall
No. The Rams practice facility is supposed to to be built behind the Promenade mall, where the old IMG insurance building currently is
My wife would remember better, but I think we mainly went to the Promenade for the movie theater.
I don’t know why your video made me think of JJ Beepers.
Twenty years ago the Promenade had expectant mother's parking spaces.
Same changes are happening at Westminster mall in OC.
lol as a kid I’d go to that mall with my parents. Living in reseda.
I've never seen Titanic... and never will. 😆
@ 17:34 U show Grant High School. In 1981-83 'The Greatest American Hero' was filmed there. I think T.J Hooker was filmed there for an episode too.
That mall had all the high end stores like Gucci, LV, and other high end stores.
8:50 they cried at my cinema as well.
