Great reviews, I love And Then There Were Three, my favorite post Peter Gabriel Genesis LP, the songs seem to flow together so well. Personally though, for me it's Peter Gabriel Genesis all the way, true pioneers of progressive rock, right up there with King Crimson and Pink Floyd, SEBTP and LLDOB are albums of pure genius, a band where every member was an outstanding musician in there own right. Not that there's any need for confirmation, but without the added vocal duties this period allows the listener to appreciate what an outstanding drummer Phil Collins is and Tony Banks has to be one of the greatest keyboard players in any band period, Watcher of the Skies has to be the best use of a mellotron on a rock track ever and to cap it all off they had epic song writing skills. If you haven't heard them take a listen to Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte, Mike Rutherford's Smallcreep's Day and Anthony Phillips The Geese and the Ghost, all great albums.
Great list. Your analysis was well thought out and presented. I really enjoy this. I have a couple of differences but overall I agreed with your thoughts. Love this band.
Great ranking, Dylan. All in my absolute favourite album is Seconds Out which doesn't count here. My go to studio album is in fact, And Then There Were Three but it was the first one I heard and has stuck with me because of that. I have the same scenario with Led Zeppelin's In Through The Out Door, and Yes's Going For The One. An aside here, but I feel Phil Collins' work with John Martyn often gets overlooked, especially when he did backing vocals. Their voices worked really well together.
A really engaging, informative and well-reasoned ranking. Very close to the order I'd choose too, with only a couple of slight differences. Great work. And I'm off to watch more of your videos!
Selling England by the Pound is definitely my favorite. It is a musical and lyric masterpiece as is The Lamb lies Down on Broadway. I certainly agree with your top two. Phil’s drumming on Selling England really stands out to me. I think he is the most underrated drummer ever. Not only in the Prog gendre but also his collaborations with Brand X and various other artists such as Robert Plant and John Martyn. I’ve been listening to Genesis for some 50 years(yes I’m up there in age). They are truly on the top of the food chain along with king Crimson, Yes, and all the other great English bands. Excellent analysis my friend, well done.
Hello Dylan ! Genesis has always lurked in the shadows for me. Never really up front , but never out of sight neither. Now , with your ranking and short breakdowns , a little fire is lit , bro. I will look into them a little more deeply , trailing your ranking as basic guideline , since we share a common taste in many other directions. Stay safe.
1& 2 (tied)selling & the lamb (10). 3 wind &wuthering (9.75) 4 foxtrot (9.5) 5 a trick of the tail (9.25) 6 nursery crime (9) 7 genesis1983 (8.75) 8 duke (8.5) 9 trespass (8.25) 10 and then there were three (8) 11 abacab (7.75) 12 calling all stations (7.25) 13 we can't dance (7) 14 invisible touch (6.75) 15 from genesis to revelation (6)
While reviewing "and then there were three..." album you overlooked, for me, the best track on it: Burning rope. That was strange because we agree that this album deserves a chance and is often underrated. That song is really awesome and you cannot by-pass it when talking about the album; just like Follow you, follow me. Just IMHO.
Great job ranking them. It has difficult choices. Spot on but. I love there first two albums so much the innocence of peters voice and Anthony playing . Great job cheers
'The Lamb' was my first Genesis album and still my favorite. It might even be my favorite album by anyone. I never really got into later Genesis but still appreciate the quality. A fine ranking. Cheers.
I've never paid much attention to Genesis. But I picked "I can't dance" and I've been listening to it a lot these days, I really like it. I'll check the rest of their discography!
I've always thought that every Genesis discography ranking should include "Spot the Pigeon". It's not a full-length album, but anyway it's studio material that wasn't released on any other non-compilation LP. Plus, it has Steve Hackett's swan song with Genesis "Inside and Out".
@@TheRecordSpinner I once heard an interview with John Peel, who did feature Genesis on his very early Radioshow (as you probably know), but then kinda dismissed them along with the whole "Prog Movement" Apparently from what he saw a lot Prog Rock Fans in the Seventies must have been horrible pretentious assholes. Funnily when I grew up and started listening to Genesis in the late 80ies and early 90ies, they were a lot of Punk Rockers at my school, and a lot of them were total pseudo elitist snobs about that music, telling me how embarrassing Genesis were. I took that stuff real serious in those days, and was really puzzled and irritated how most people seemed to hate this band I loved to pieces. And when people liked them, they told you in a surreptitious way. I had this guy pull me aside, make sure nobody was listening, and tell me he loved them too....Really weird. It wasn t everybody of course, and it wasn t the only subject that mattered, but there was quite a lot of hate for Genesis out there. Hilarious
The best Genesis ranking video I've seen by far. So pleased you didn't do that lazy thing of dividing the albums into the pre- and post-Gabriel eras as there are some real gems when Phil Collins took over the vocals. I'd put Lamb a tad lower, but otherwise I'm with you in your list.
Great album ranking list, here is mine!! 😁👍 1. “Abacab” (1981) 2. “Genesis” (1983) 3. “Duke” (1980) 4. “A Trick of the Tail” (1976) 5. “Selling England by the Pound” (1973) 6. “Foxtrot” (1972) 7. “Invisible Touch” (1986) 8. “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” (1974) 9. “Wind and Wuthering” (1976) 10. “Nursery Cryme” (1971) 11. “We Can’t Dance” (1991) 12. “…And Then There Were Three” (1978) 13. “Trespass” (1970) 14. “Calling All Stations” (1997) 15. “From Genesis to Revelation” (1969) Let me know what you think to it!! 😀👍
The Lord of lords - King of kings has returned to lead his children home , to take them to the New Jerusalem...... 1 Corinthians 15 : 1 - 4 ......Ephesians 2 : 8 - 9 .....Revelation 19 : 16 - 17 KJV Bible.
Of course I don't agree with everything, but definitely nr 1. But I really liked your analyses of each album. Especially that you mentioned Scenes from a nights dream. It is one of my favorite tracks. Usually Genesis fans don't like it for some unknown reason. Maybe it is me that is strange, I like almost all the more humorous Genesis tracks like Battle of Epping forest, All in a mouses night, Jesus he knows me, Robbery Assault and battery, Harold the Barell and not to forget the non album track Pigeons with the epic opening "Who put 50 tons of shit on the foreign office roof?".
Yes SEBTP is their very best. Every song is either very good or totally brilliant. I'd put Foxtrot next, then Wind and Wuthering, Trick of the Tail, Trespass, Nursey Cryme, LLDOB. By the time Hackett left there became too much synth dominating although they were still a good band.
Thanks. It's just a bit of fun naturally. The albums up to and including Duke have been companions, on and off all of my life. I have to confess, I've never even listened to Abacab, IT, or WCD all the way through. I've tried but I just run back to what I know. @TheRecordSpinner
And Then Tbere Were Three, Wind & Wuthering, Foxtrot, Duke are my absolute favourites, as in every song. All the other albums have great songs and , other songs
As a new genesis fan, i'm surprised not a lot of people like their 80s stuff, i like genesis(1983) and invisible touch because not only its because they are the first 2 albums i heard from genesis, but I grew up with a lot of 80s music. Even though i'm a gen z, i would listen to a lot of 80s music on the radio and tv because that was my first exposure to music at a very young age and i grew up with the 80s sound. But i'm interested in listening to genesis' eariler works to see what's what.😊
Genesis' catalog is interesting because depending on the upbringing, it will subject you to different eras. Radio subjection will lead to a liking of the 80s material. Digging deeper into albums will bring forward a whole different world
1. The lamb 2. Foxtrot 3. Selling England 4. Nursery cryme 5. Trespass 6. A trick of the tail 7. Wind & wuthering 8. Duke 9. ABACAB 10. Self titled 11. And then there were three 12. Invisible touch 13. From genesis to revelation 14. We can't dance 15. Calling all stations
"Nursery Cryme" to me is in the top 5 (together with "Foxtrot", Selling England", "The Lamb" and "Trick of the Tail"), and I cannot rank these 5 albums, it depends on my mood. I'd have "And then there were three" and "Duke" close together around no. 8. "Trespass" I have at 6, followed by "Wind and Wuthering". The rest I can agree with you pretty much.
Very good review! Imho Foxtrot is the number one (than Selling and The lamb) not only Supper's ready (The masterpiece of the band) but all the tracks are amazing!
Interesting, thanks! Can’t believe though that you rank Abacab as high, in my view it’s down at the bottom level and definately way below Trespass... but, hey, that’s the beauty of sharing opinions.😎👍
He said that his two favourite albums are Duke and Wind and Wuthering. There's an uncut Tony Banks interview in here that he says that Duke is probably his favourite album.
Genesis in the 1970s - up to and including "And Then There Were Three" - a perfect distillation into short songs of the 70s Genesis magic - and Genesis thereafter (with Duke being like watching a great beast being torn apart, with lesser creatures scuttling out of its carapace) were effectively two different bands: the first mostly sublime; the second churning out pop rubbish which didn't even square up to the more modern pop acts that emerged at the time - including, bizarrely, Phil Collins, whose 80s-onward material sounds far more convincing than Mike and (especially) Tony's attempts to pop out as Genesis. You are attempting to rank two different bands as one.
Do not agree at all , still love your UA-cam piece , we do have to distinguish Genesis with in the backgroung Phil C, and Genesis with in the foreground Phil C , the latter deserves not the Genesis name , only this first one does . With Phil C it's a far cry from ( real ) music
The Gabriel era is just a myth as they weren't that great & most of his albums with Genesis were patchy at best & my top 5 Genesis abums are.... 5 - Wind & Wuthering 4 - Selling England By The Pound 3 - Duke 2 - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway 1 - A Trick Of The Tail....
I doubt you've even listened to calling all stations. Infact whenever so called "fans" rank it last i really question if they've actually sat and listened to it properly. People bitch about it being too mike and tony sounding... Well news flash. Tony and Mike, especially Tony are the sound of Genesis.
Thank you for not insulting the 80s stuff like so many people do. I was raised in the 70s/80s and enjoyed those albums a lot.
I'm just getting into Genesis, but my favorite right now is Nursery Cryme. Lamb is probably my 2nd.
Nursery Cryme is a brilliant album.
Not as good as Foxtrot!
Great reviews, I love And Then There Were Three, my favorite post Peter Gabriel Genesis LP, the songs seem to flow together so well.

I love From Genesis to Revellations, Into the Wilderness is a track that points the direction that they would stick witch it
Great list. Your analysis was well thought out and presented. I really enjoy this. I have a couple of differences but overall I agreed with your thoughts. Love this band.
This was a great job! Great job!
Really good Review.
Enjoyed it, immensely
Good choice for No.1
Great ranking, Dylan. All in my absolute favourite album is Seconds Out which doesn't count here. Great to hear some love for And Then There Were Three, I love it as well.
Selling england is the best album because of dancing with, firth of fifth and cinema
A Trick Of The Tail is absolutely perfection, my favorite is the lamb, but I appreciate all the albums and love them all
1. Selling England
2. Foxtrot
3. Trick of the Tail
4. Nursery Cryme
5. Lamb Lies Down
And then there were three is easily the most underrated album. Tbh, I believe it was Genesis' most musical album.
It's what got me into them when it was still new.
I definitely have some work to do still with listening to the whole Genesis catalog!
A really engaging, informative and well-reasoned ranking. Very close to the order I'd choose too, with only a couple of slight differences. Great work. And I'm off to watch more of your videos!

I agree to your Ranking…😍
Is that Steve Hackett's autograph on the albums?
Thanks for mentioning 'The Lamia'.
I love trick of the tail the cover
Is great every picture tells a
Story. The first track is worth
A mention. A great opening.
Volcano's something .
Not my exact order, but really, really close! Good job delving into each album, Dylan.
'The Lamb' was my first Genesis album and still my favorite. It might even be my favorite album by anyone. I never really got into later Genesis but still appreciate the quality. A fine ranking. Cheers.
Thanks's for Abacab some love...I think is the perfect transition album.
I've never paid much attention to Genesis. But I picked "I can't dance" and I've been listening to it a lot these days, I really like it. I'll check the rest of their discography!
Your top three Genesis albums coincide with mine, and in the same order.

It's a fun EP that alot of fans either ignore or don't know about. I own it on CD!
Love your channel. Been long time listener
You re absolutely right about the term "Prog Snobs"...They do exist...
So toxic yet also comical at the same time

Calling all stations ... and then there were two. Top marks for getting most of the 80s stuff over with at the start of your countdown.
Haha just one man's opinion but relatively relatable to others!

great video - i know this is about their studio albums, but if you were to add seconds out to the list, where would it rank?
"Nursery Cryme" to me is in the top 5 (together with "Foxtrot", Selling England", "The Lamb" and "Trick of the Tail"), and I cannot rank these 5 albums, it depends on my mood. There is only one good cut on Abacrap that's any good. No way better than Nursery Cryme.
Very good review! Imho Foxtrot is the number one (than Selling and The lamb) not only Supper's ready (The masterpiece of the band) but all the tracks are amazing!
Foxtrot is their best IMO. ABACAB should be near the worst.

Agreed, side 2 of ABACAB is not good.
Cool rankings! I'd have Duke very high as well. I do have Nursery Cryme in top 5 though.. It's epic like Foxtrot.

I'd only kick 'Duke' out of the top 5 and stick 'Nursery Crymes' in its place. Cool list though, dude.
I agree… Trespass is REALLY is the first album….revelation, they were teenagers …..it’s more like Demos….
Whats crazy is that the demos from that Revelation period is enough for an albums worth of material!

Steve Hackett!
