Years ago before Crimson cut their first album, some friends of mine had a band and they rehearsed in the basement of a cafe in Fulham London.
I went along to the rehearsals on several occasions and noticed that there was a stack of equipment in the hallway.
I asked my friends whose equipment it was and they said it belonged to another band that rehearsed there.
I asked what they were called and none of them knew their name, so I took a closer look at the equipment.
I eventually found their name stencilled on one of the cases. King Crimson.
I thought to myself, with a Mellotron and a name like that, they're never gonna make it.
I've just bought tickets for a Crimson gig in Cardiff in October 18 and just hope they're gonna play the same set as the live in Chicago (June 17) double CD and so does my son who's coming with me.

I really is amazing when you look at all of the artists that Fripp was able to bring into King Crimson to make special appearances on those three (3) albums after the first album. Keith Tippet is amazing on these records, especially Catfood. Fripp wanted Tippet as a full time member, but Tippet declined. Artists from the Soft Machine camp appear, too, such as Marc Charig and others.
Amazing band that I absolutely love listening to.

@@ericarmstrong6540 growing up in Cleveland Ohio.in the 80s. The drummer of the band i was hooked up with . Well his older brother "Jimmy " moved to San Francisco a few years before. ( a side note . Jimmy was the best guitarist i have ever watched face to face) but Jimmy hooked up with a couple of guys out there and they called themselves Mauer, Juhne , Tippit, Cross. . I had the chance to meet and watch them preform. They were as good as they get. Also Jimmy was always back and forth to Cleveland and San Francisco . But I know of 3 times Alen Holsworth was coming through Ohio and always had Jimmy to open for him. Jimmys band was in SF so he was always scattering around to get some musicians together . And each time they never really had time to practice anything and the shows were always jam up and all jazz improv that could put the finest seasoned musicians in shock. Thank for listening

Good video, except i just thought i'd remind you that Red was not Bruford's last album, in fact, Bruford went on to go and do another four albums with the band. That is unless you got mixed up and meant John Wetton as this was his final album with the band.

First of all, Derek, you're more handsome than the Crimson King!
Second of all, Court Of The Crimson King was such an eye opener. The psychedelic era of rock was coming to an end. Prog rock was taking over. That album influenced Yes and Genesis. While In The Wake Of Poseidon took things further from their debut, transition was also apparent. Side 1 is similar to the debut but side 2 is its own entity. Lizard makes the transition more apparent. Red was a blueprint for what a "farewell" album should sound like. Discipline brought King Crimson back together, albiet with new people in tow.

Agree quite a bit with your assessments of the individual LP's. I'm curious what you think of "Islands". I think it's hugely underrated. I also like "Beat" quite well (at least as much as "Discipline")
I think "Discipline", "Beat" & "Three of a perfect Pair" go well together. They play almost like a set (kind of the way Jethro Tull's "Songs From the wood", "Heavy Horses" & "Stormwatch" fit nicely together.)
Considering how widely King Crimson's music would change in the course of a couple of LP's. It's amazing how consistently good every one of these first 10 LP's are.

thegalaxybeing Islands is a masterpiece. I saw that lineup and can attest to its brilliance.. but they didn’t do the song Islands.. no pianist or cornet player. It was fare from Lizard Court Wake and Islands and I hadn’t heard Islands so thought it was the Lizard band !!! I was a kid but it made a dramatic impression on me.
I’m so happy that you appreciate Islands... critics suck. They use their poison pens yet aren’t in the arena bleeding for all to see, pouring out their hearts. Islands the song is one of the crowning achievements of the great KC repertoire. Perfect peace...

Definitely a KC fan over here. Have you heard THRAK or B'BOOM: Live from Argentina? B'BOOM was an "offical bootleg" recorded during their tour for THRAK in the mid-90s. The song selection is astounding and, sonically, it's a phenomenal recording. Sadly, it has not seen the light of day on vinyl (to my knowledge) yet. Thanks for another good video, Dereck. I never got "Islands" or "Starless And Bible Black", as I never really liked those records. And I never got the later ones starting with their 1981 album "Discipline", because i thought they weren't as good, but also I'm running out of room to add more cds and records in my collection!

Arkadi Danielyan Start listening more!? All I do is listen to King Crimson! Whatever. I have a double Bachelor of Music degree in both piano and voice, and do know something about King Crimson. I founded and run a KC group and most of the fans I know love Islands. It’s a matter of opinion. But nobody’s opinion is more valuable than another’s anyway, if it is well informed. I saw the Islands lineup perform their last gig together too and it happens to have been in B’ham Alabama. So I certainly have a right to my opinion. You don’t have to be rude about yours.

hello, a nice review- i saw the marvellous debut of king crimson at hyde park july 5th 69 with rolling stones, and elswhere.they were so good and with fripp on his stool, and the mellotron and strobes it was so much of that magical era.that gave way to the mundane 70s,including crimson.im afraid to me, you cant underestimate the role of pete sinfield who gave the ist 3 albums that kind of barouque mysticism, especially on lizard ! on new years day 71 without drink or drugs me and a friend played lizard, the terry riley and the vistas of a kind of surreal archtypal evocation was so present. the later 70s ones are a bit 2 dimensional techno jazz rock for me. id relly urge you to hear jade warrior,if you havent yet, eg. way of the sun, floating world, kites, and waves ,a kind of effortless mythic soundscape that youll enjoy.

To quote Fripp at the time, King Crimson actually "cease[d] to exist" after the release of Red in September, 1974. Fripp, as the band leader, in essence "pulled the plug" on Crimson for reasons that are well documented for those who wish to read more. They were no longer a going concern and Fripp, Wetton, and Bruford went on to other endeavors after Red. Fripp did keep the ghost of Crimson alive with the release of "USA" and "Young Persons Guide to King Crimson" after their demise.
The re-emergence of King Crimson in 1981 only happened after the new band, "Discipline", was formed in the spring of 1981 and, after playing together for several "play-in" gigs, everyone in the band agreed that instead of the name "Discipline" the group should be called "King Crimson".

    • @DarkeningSkies1
      @DarkeningSkies1 7 років тому

I took him to mean precisely what he said- that the turmoil in the world will eventually catch up to just about everyone in every society, and leisure time for collecting records and listening to them will likely be thin on the ground. I was simply stating that here in 2018, it is still going in that direction IMHO.

    • @DarkeningSkies1
      @DarkeningSkies1 7 років тому

A complete collapse of society does not have to happen for people who are already on the line economically to be negatively affected enough to lose their disposable income (i.e. collecting old records) and much of their spare time (i.e. listening to them) ... I took his reaction to the political climate in the U.S. especially to reflect this. Why don't you ask him precisely what he meant?

In my opinion, the ONLY Classic Rock band that actually got BETTER after 1980 was King Crimson. I say that as a huge Crimson fan, who LOVED everything they did before Discipline already. But, when Discipline came out, it cut against the grain of everything else going on at that time. It was like Crimson were saying we really don't care what we're being told. We're following our muse - deal with it.
Most of my favorite acts of all time either sold out a bit, burned out a bit, or just quit after about 1979. Not Crimson.
It goes against the pattern of what I think of every other trend, post-1979, to say this, but I DO think Discipline (and Beat) are essential.
I think Three of a Perfect Pair was a bit of a let-down after that, and they've never quite reached that pinnacle again, since. But, every time they do something new, it's still pretty amazing.
A few other acts are kind of like that (Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, Peter Gabriel, for instance), but none are so unwilling to cop out and become lame as King Crimson.

"in the wake" almost had elton john on it. fripp decided "no" at last moment. i have always said kCr are a kind of spring fling; very hard to love for a long time. (but i do). they kept changing up as they moved forward. Red is just about my fave, but closely followed by In the court, Beat, Power to believe. only not entranced by islands (original mix release) and Thrak. i tend to have Bowie "scary Monsters" and Gabriel #3 and #4 alongside Beat, 3 of a perfect pair due to shared musicianship and time of release.

@GenesisKnights As I said, it took me awhile to crack it but I would agree that Discipline bears closer scrutiny.

To me In the court of the crimson king is the ultimate rock album and here in Europe is regarded as one of the most important records ever.
    Anyway:
    1) You got the red and the yellow, you're missing the blue: Beat. Similar to Three of a perfect pair, especially the cover.
    2) Check out "Giles Giles and Fripp" and the Fripp-Eno albums.
    3) Another live album that you may be interested in is Earthbound from 1972 (Island american tour). Nobody likes it but I do.
    Cheers

I heard "Schizoid Man" on KRAB-FM Seattle when I was 12 and the next day, I was at the Brass Ear at the Tacoma Mall, hoping to find the debut album. They didn't have it, so I bought what was then the new release, Lizard. I didn't like the singing as much as what I'd heard on the radio, but I still thought it was a pretty cool album. Plus I really, really liked the cover art!
I always thought "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" must be gourmet "Cat Food"..

Lizard is (even more than their other works) an acquired taste tbh.
I do believe is their second best before-larks album.

Greatest Crimso albums by order of greatness... Starless, Larks, Red, In the Wake, Lizard, Court, discipline, three of...the later albums are great too but; every crimso head should agree...You're not a crimso head if you haven't heard Red; 100 times at least...:)

have only few cd's from KC , was introduced to the band with In The Wake Of Poseidon & Discipline records, those first kicks have remain the favorites, especially track Pictures Of The City, ofcourse first album and Red are music-wise maybe better, 2003 Power To Believe is solid stuff

I did an analysis some years ago of the progression of prog and came to the conclusion that Red was the last GREAT prog album before that tent folded.Lucky for us there's a crapload of great music before that swansong album imho

I don't think Lizard is a hard album to get into at all... I got it immediately and it's one of my absolute favourite Crimson albums.
Plus - Bill Bruford played in the 1981-84 and 1995 lineup.
Isn't it great that Fripp is reforming the band?

Lizard has awesome instrumentation, but the lyrics can put you off tbh (Except Lady of The Dancing Water, God bless that song, easily the most beautiful and comfy of King Crimson)

the first eight albums (even including earthbound as unofficially the fifth) were my pick. I don't like discipline/beat/3 of a perfect pair phase as much. the double trio is a return to form somewhat, and the latest with mel back and 3 drummers is fantastic, but as yet no new stuff??
