    I’m glad a logging truck is one of the first trucks you built. It will not only give you the data you need it will also push the truck to the limit. A side bonus you will finally get to hear nature on your drive up and down the mountains.

      @@jimcalver-oj4xf It's called "ducking" in the radio and audio engineering worlds, reducing or cutting the music when your priority signal (two-way or an announcement) rises above a certain volume. I haven't seen these systems completely integrated but have found a few external ones. I've been looking at adding such a system to the family boat, dropping the tunes when something comes in on the marine VHF.

      @@NathanielStauber As a fellow audio engineer I agree. It wouldn't be too difficult to do technically but requires radio manufacturers to do something they normally don't. You would need a special head unit with RCA inputs that had the programming to duck the music when signal from the VHF and / or CB inputs detected a signal. The problem is shipping the unit for under $1k.

    • @RENO_K
      @RENO_K 6 годин тому +2

      @@NathanielStauber wouldn't that be quite easy to do as long as you can get the audio sources into digital form?
      VHF an AD hat + Raspberry Pi, set it up to like do a loop
      While True:
      If VHF goes over ___ db:
      Mute Apple music audio
      Mute Spotify audio
      Wait 3s
      Else:
      Unmute Apple Music audio
      Unmute Spotify audio
      And it'll already be able to play music directly which would be nice, don't need to connect stuff to any jacks
      But that's just my idea of it, do please correct me if I got things wrong

    This is exciting to see Tolko and Peerless team up with you to make this happen. I have seen Peerless along side Whit-log trailers all my life(4th gen logging) I just shake my head when the "big" truck makers do not go the way you are. Why reinvent the wheel and make things look space age and do not work for this application and others. But it does give you the opening you have made to get this done. Been following you for a few years now and love your approach. well done guys

    • @leonhart2452
      @leonhart2452 3 години тому +4

      Front axle drive is an option on the pickup kits. At this time they are using a single motor axle on both front and rear. The rear can be upgraded to a dual motor set up.
      I think each motor is around 200 HP. So with a dual in the rear and a single up front you get 600 HP at the wheels. If the front can use a dual it gives you 800 HP. That's a lot of HP and a truck load of torque. I think you get about 3.5 ft-lb per HP with these electric motors. If that's right 800 HP=2800 ft-lbs of torque. And that comes in from zero rpms.
      These numbers are why the kits are for big pickups at least 3/4 ton.
      Deboss Garage is doing a kit in a Ram 2500. They installed a cat 4 cylinder diesel engine and did some testing. They are now adding the generator, batteries, rear axle, maybe the front, not sure on that and the controls to run the axles.
      Pretty interesting stuff. Kinda wish I had the money to get one.

    This is so damned cool. I remember as a kid who grew up in a family that started with a small farm and smaller sawmill, what it was like to see things evolve. Some of the trucks we saw were amazing, owner built trucks that met their needs based on equipment, budget, pure profit, company image, and even for play. Yes, there was a bunch of dump truckers that all built their own small trucks. They would start with something like an old '56 Ford F-350, beef up the frame, put in a 4-53 Detroit, and set them up with a 4&4. One was a tandem, one had a single axle log trailer, a couple came up with air brakes, and one of the crew just wanted to sound cool and put some 'sneezers' on his truck so it would sound like he had air brakes. They were heavy on mechanics and not so much on beauty, buff and chrome.
    They were all cool. They would gather up logs from various clearing jobs that were generally given to them for firewood. Sometimes they had enough to make several loads of short saw logs. Those were the times when they would show up at our small mill on a Saturday. You could hear them coming up the back way to the mill which had a pretty steep grade. The last hill was so steep that it was not unusual that they would be tail heavy. I would hear a horn start honking and I knew it was time to get the farm tractor and a chain to pull them up to the top of the hill with the front axle in the air. Often these guys would make it a Saturday morning outing. They would all go load up their truck early on a Saturday morning and then show up at the mill as a convoy. You could always hear them coming. Old straight piped little diesels, grabbing gears with the fastest truck in the lead so the knew that they wouldn't get stuck on the hill. It always lit me up as a kid to see all of them come in. By the age of about 8-10 I was getting to unload them and scale the logs. They inspired me to love mechanics and be creative. I was the oldest of four brothers and the only one that fell in love with mechanics. It has become one of my greatest assets and pleasures and I owe a lot to those wildcat truckers. They will never know what a gift they were to me.

    Capacity of load
    Capacity of power in the battery (Ah)
    Capacity of range with just the battery (if everything pulls maximum power, so the minimum range)
    Capacity of range with battery and generator (if everything pulls maximum power)

      Truck/trailer/logs max weight 65 metric ton or 143,000 lbs in Canada
      Trailer weight is standard. Edison diesel/electric truck weight is comparable to diesel/mechanical truck.
      Truck has 200 kWh batteries.
      Battery only with fully loaded truck up hill is less than 30 minutes.
      Battery only fully loaded on highway is 1,2, or 3 hours.
      Battery fully loaded coming down mountain will regen and refill the batteries.
      Range fully loaded with onboard engine/generator is like 600 miles with 10 minutes fuel up.

    I'm curious how the battery charge management will work. Like, it wouldn't make sense for the diesel to charge the battery past 10-30% when you're heading uphill, that way on the trip down you can use all that weight to charge the battery from low to full instead of the diesel charging the battery on the way up at all

      In the case of semi-type trucks, you really don't get much benefit from having the front axles powered unless you're driving without a trailer, because all of the weight is on the back axles.

    Hello Edison
    I have a legit question.
    Wouldn’t it make sense to put drive axels on the trailer?
    For me it looks like you are just pulling the tires through the mud. If you had pulling power on them maybe they could “pull” it self up from the mud.
    I know I would cost extra money but then you wouldn’t need as much power on the actual truck. Or so I am imagining :)
    Love your company and the vision!

    • @BlackEpyon
      @BlackEpyon 9 годин тому +4

      That's only for the hill itself. If you're just going up and down the hill all day, you might never need the generator, but if you have to travel over flat land, you don't have regen charging the batteries any more, and there's also the issue of where the nearest charging station is should you actually need it. Besides, take a look at the Tesla semi and tell me that's a logging truck. They'd have had to modify it a fair bit just to make it work.
