Don't rush getting catching up. I have a feeling that you are making better videos because you have a longer time frame to work with. If you haven't considered it, one thing that I think all Sailing Channels could benefit from is yearly recap videos for those of us that come late to the party. I love your videos. Thank you.
Another great video, you gotta love how Pierce feels sad when you keep a fish you caught. He is standing over both of you, probably wishing the fish gets loose. Good hearted boy.
Thank you for explaining and breaking down your reasoning for sailing certain ways! it helps me as a novice sailor. Great job with the videos! Our family is watching 1 every week. Take care and may the four winds blow you safely along your way!
Again I must sound like a broken record but I really enjoy watching- the decisions the views and the commentary. Thank you so much for sharing the experience. Louis
You definitely convinced me to choose a performance cat instead of a floating condo (I was looking at Privilege). Still have to work out the WAF (wife approval factor) though ;-). You are very inspiring. Best regards from Spain.
Good choice! When the time is right, call the nice people at Outremer and get a tour of their yard in France. And bring your wife! When Elizabeth first stepped aboard Archer she was sold (although I never took her on a Privilege! :)
Love your boat , looks like good fun for the whole family. I get sad when the fish gotta die too. Be safe .....trying to help the algorithm....how do you sleep on passage? You looked tired by the second day ....
Did you try and throw out a lure? Maybe they are more of a trophy fish. Can you imagine trying to cut that thing up to eat, if you could? It would be like a bloody massacre occurred on your boat. Kids would be traumatized for life.
What a lovely passage ,and the stories of your son where are we (oh yes he forgot lol on passage ),.The tuna got away ,the mystery of the plastic clip and the best Mickey Mouse pancakes
Such good video content. You are excellent at it and it is amazing you do not have 10x the subscribers. I feel like I am part of a small group of lucky viewers "in the know".
Great videos and anxiously await the next. Feel good that you and Elizabeth wear harnesses most of the time handling the sails. It makes me feel safe and know that your great crew will be safe as well.

Going back and watching some older videos. I'm in love with Archer and started looking at Outremer after watching your review of it.. but ooof.. they are expensive - even the older ones. Probably too much so for me.
Love the channel you are sharing.. I guess speed is good when a family with kids "wants to get there" and i appreciate a good Captain takes safety and working the boat to its best is commendable I bet you and the kids have like I did on sailing vacations with my dad and mom had to learn how to enjoy the windless days.. flopping sails sucks . But when there's just enough to keep em full.. even on a glassy sea it's cool how we all learned how to siesta and enjoy every thing about it as we do with a howling wind and rail to the water. Something to learn from and enjoy on any or most days.
Great video !. I'm always scared to take a nap while under passage. I'm assuming you were as well when first starting out. I guess you learn to trust the instruments..just "scary". Thanks for sharing

Thanks again, and by the way great video at Multi hull Central, I have been surprised that you dont have gen set!! Wow... loved it! Doesnt this not gives you many limitations as water maker, ar cond and so on?. Great video!! Thanks!!!
The battery technology today is amazing, so we can get by just on solar. We make water daily and don’t run our AC unless we are in a marina. It’s a great set up.
HI, how do you organize the night shifts ? you only do them ? I saw that when its quiet you do 30 minutes sleep but when it's not quiet ? great video, love all the sailing part.
You and me both! We were so curious to see if the caretakers would still be living there during cyclone season - and to have the entire island to ourselves! Would any other cruisers still be there? Would the sea-life be even crazier than normal? We were so curious we almost sailed in just to see!
Are you going to put out current footage? Just curious to know what you are doing now and where you are during COVID times. Enjoy watching your family.
Yes, we are still filming and plan to catch up to "today" within about three months time. Just a lot of footage (great footage) to go through! And since the main reason for these videos is for us to remember our trip, we want to release them all. Thanks for watching!
On a reach, no, not really. We typically put down the windward board (when out at sea cruising). If we really need to point close hauled then we put both down.
I think the mystery part fall would be driving me crazy. Great video. Does anyone have any advice to where I should start learning how to read weather. I'm 1 year from my retirement. Boat shopping now. Thanks for any help
Start looking at Windy (the app) in you’re area. It’s free and it takes some getting used to. Play around with the different layers of data too. Very interesting (wind gusts, Rainfall, isotherms). Good luck!
Just watched the walk-through you did for the SEAbbaticals channel, and I have questions: You said you don’t use much fuel, so do you use fuel stabilizer? How necessary is fuel stabilizer? Is fuel stabilizer more important in the tropics?
G'day, Sailing Vessel Archer, Captain, Mate, & crew. The question of the day, albeit way back then, and notwithstanding the covid scamdemic about to rain on your parade, what's the hurry? I mean I am intrigued that as a would-be cruiser my self if only the travel restrictions way back then and continuing had not continuously rained on my own parade finding a boat to buy, and yourselves as cruisers who are wanting to revisit the places that you enjoyed first time around, why the rush to get to ENZed, the end of the 'road' last time around? I imagine that the answer may well reveal itself in due course, 'scuse the pun, but patience never was one of my virtues!
Hey Gypzy, thanks for the question! We covered it a bit in our previous video, but the main issue was that because of our repair we were stuck in the Cyclone Zone. We needed to get our boat east (into the weakening trade winds) to the Gambier islands, or west (with the trades) to New Zealand or Australia. Only in those places would our insurance coverage stay to protect our asset - and would we feel safe cruising with kids. It killed us to sail off from Paradise, but it was also the wet season, and so we sailed to New Zealand. Crazy, right!?
@@TheSailingFamily Ahuh, I hear what you are saying, and of course that was 12 months ago and its easy to be wise after the fact. I actually live in that environment in Oz and so am a bit blaze about the proverbial "wet season". To that end, I "had a dream", if I can quote 'someone', back in 1981 when I was a cattle farmer, or rancher in your lingo--I was only 31 then--and had this burning desire to sail the world, and in 1983 after subdividing and selling my property I went to contract on a Miller-designed--Ben Lexcen's name before he changed it--48 foot centre cockpit cutter-rigged sloop, a relatively fast boat for a cruiser, with which I had grand designs to 'outrun/retreat' from any cyclones that came my way. I never got the chance as I was offered an interest in a boutique merchant bank--I was an accountant by profession--following deregulation of the Australian financial industry, and exercised a condition in the contract to absolve it and the rest is history. With satellite weather forecasting these days and a fast cat under you I was thinking that you could deal with the imminent threat of cyclone expeditiously. Then again, in terms of risk management with a family on board I am sure that was not an option that you would be too keen to take. C'est la vie! I look forward to continuing to follow your journey. Cheers for now.
We have to admit this was just an "add milk" style product we bought in French Polynesia. It's so easy on a boat! But to get that golden brown color we grease the pan and then wipe off the excess before pouring it. It helps!!!
It is so refreshing to see content that is family friendly, fun and interesting. Mahalo!
