great video. also to point out. there are different ways to present the ball to ur team when u are tackled. the default of course is the "stapler" as i know it. where ur back is to the opposition. and u present the ball with ur arms and legs parallel to each other. another way is "laying the egg." where the tackled player is his/her elbows and knees, and u squeeze the ball through ur thighs. with ur head pointing to the opposition. it is still legal to go for the poach.
I agree with most of this except one thing. In professional leagues like Heineken cup and Super Rugby they do not penalise a player when he is attempting a pilfer and goes off his feet. That Munster player at 3:10 is actually off his feet because even though he is not leaning on the ground and his knees aren't touching the ground his body weight is pressing downward (shown by his shoulders below his hips) and his upper body is completely supported by the player on the ground.
At 1:30 the player in white, his head and shoulders is lower than his waste / hips, technically I thought this was a free-kick violation, due to the fact that once the blue player makes contact with the white player that forms a ruck and the law states that in a Ruck your head has to be equal to or above your waist, or else it's a free kick to the opposition. I have never seen this free-kick called. Law 15.3 " Players involved in all stages of the ruck must have their heads and shoulders no lower than their hips. Sanction: Free-kick." it looks like the jacklers head is lower than his hips!
one thing that isn't mentioned is that if you are the tackler but don't go to ground, you still have to come through the gate, if you are the tackler and do go to ground then you don't have to worry about the gate.
Terrific video, explains each point brilliantly. That Francois Hougaard tackle and turnover is absolutely phenomenal!
Thank you very much for this video. Jackling the ball is one of my favorite action !
Brilliant video very informative thanks for making it
Cheers for the video. Playing number 7 for the first time since I was 17 this year so my goal is to win turnovers, very informed on the laws now.

Brilliant video. This makes so much sence. Thank you
Eric Ruth - just to clarify. You can use your hands in the ruck (when engaged) you just need to have had them on the ball before the ruck was formed.
Great video..thank you..trying to teach my girlfriend the rules..this helped massively. .even learnt something new myself. .
that steal at 6:52 was beautiful
made this concept so much easier to understand
Super helpful

@EpicOB correct. The last frame of the video sums up the proper way to jackal.

Two years on from this comment, so just noting for reference that even the tackler now has to come through the gate.
this is a very helpful video
if the ruck is formed and u come through the gate and get past the ball, can u pick the ball up then?
2:00 wow the Highlanders winning a game!
One more question. If an opposing player jackals the ball and a ruck is formed. Are you allowed to rip it back?
yes
Better waybill low and smash their arms together with yours
yesterday, for the first time i tried to steal the ball at a ruck, the guy punched me in the nose.. haha
Pocock is the turnover God!
Wow. Just when I thought I had understood rugby rules.....So complex
fanatastic vid man, too bad all refs dont call it the same
no. only someone who isn't engaged in the ruck can touch with hands. when engaged you can use your feet only
What no Mccaw and George smith
