So if the brain reacts differently to music than to other audio stimuli, could we determine, at least from a scientific standpoint, what is and isn't music? I know there are huge debates over whether rap is music, over whether noise (artists like Merzbow) is music, and nobody can ever seem to come to a conclusion.
How would rap not be considered music, it follows a beat similar to a drum, has structure to it and can release dopamine in a persons brain if they like it.
I, (an educated person in music) do believe that rap is music whether people like it or not, it's not the lyrics per say that are the music but rather how they go with the background music that makes it music.
(imo) Music is a bunch of sounds that is played in order with the right order. And some people also thinks that we enjoy music because it's like a side effect of our hearing
I've been playing flute for almost 6 years now, violin for about 1, clarinet and Alto sax for about 6 ish months, music is a big part of my life and helps me through many issues. The type I listen to most is orchestral and classical, with a few of other types mixed in there. I don't plan on leaving music any time soon as it has majorly effected my life in a very positive way.
I think learning how to play an instrument helps us become smarter because, when you sight read a score, you tend to multi task a lot. You need to read the rhythm, concentrate on the tempo(for wind instruments) regulate your breathing etc etc. And when we multi task, out brains are exercised a lot. Especially for pianos. On a piano, it's like playing 2 instruments at the same time, with double the things to multi task. And when our brains are exercised a lot. Like muscles, it will get stronger.
Regarding the study about music making you smarter: It has more to do with the fact that kids playing music instruments come from higher socio-economic families.
Nah, Its not one study. Learning an instrument and musical theory literally changes the structure of your brain.EX. If you play a unfretted string instrument before a certain age, you will likely have developed a whole extra gyrus on your right hemisphere of your cerebral cortex.

There has to be more to it than that. From learning musical theory, musicians are constantly thinking about the patterns, what kind of notes, and all kinds of details that don't interest a causal music listener. I suspect there could be some increased activity in the prefrontal cortex, and areas to do with analytical thinking. Everyone loves music, and this video correctly correlates dopamine release associated with music as to explain why. It is clear that everyone enjoys music, but I still think we do not experience it in the same way. After studying some music, I found myself that I can't enjoy music that I used to, my brain wants to experience something that it doesn't understand and it derives much more pleasure from listening to something that is more complex and expressive than an average pop song.
